kudos for putting something out that you're not entirely happy with. it's a prototype and taught you plenty. We keep trying to get students to take the gamble and try stuff and then improve subsequent versions but its always a hard sell these days.
Props to the presenter here for Filming an intimidating vehicle and being honest about his wish not to push to hard and potentially end up with an expensive bill! Theres no Nannies on these to save you from your inevitable mistakes, so hustling these quickly on the asphalt is not a beginner sport
I think this could have been made more entertaining by having a front facing camera (like a lot of track videos) rather than rear/face. The suspension cam was nice, although didn’t need to keep going back to it. The content tbh was decent, not a bad video by any means.
Took one of these out for 3 hours last year. Addictive sound and handling, but heavens above it’s not for public roads....really. Licence loser for sure as you cannot help but give it the right foot. It’s not a car for cruising in, and I longed for a track to take it on. It’s amazing but a frustrating car on public roads. I took a 310 out before it, which is much more suited for British roads. Whilst the 310 is also a great car and a lot of fun, the two are chalk and cheese. 360r or 420r would be my choice I think, but not had the chance to drive either one yet. Hope to this year sometime.
Agree with everything you say here! 620 too fast, 6 speed too frenetic, S3 a little tight. 420R SV with 5 speed is perfect for track, and good on road. 310R SV is perfect for road, and good on track. I own the former, and used to have the latter nearest equivalent (150bhp Rover K series Caterham). Top work fella !
Whilst not your best vid it has its good points , main one for me its an S version with a five speed box & most impotant its the only 620S x 5 speed on youtube So well worth watching thank you.
170 bhp is probably about enough for these 7 type cars on the roads, the ones that I have owned had 135, 180, 210, 200, 175 and 210 again. It is more the rev range and free-revving nature of the more highly tuned cars that provides the joy Would I like to try a 620? Of course, and the sequential box would be amazing and you don't have to use all of the power all of the time........ but I think on the road the ability to wring out the car on the road is probably lost if you want to be reasonably responsible/socially acceptable (I think the 620r does over 60 in first gear) so it becomes more of a track car at this level. The ideal would be the low mass and high revs of the Hyabusa engined car that I had (with the sequential shift and very light flywheel), without the risks of the engine going pop and a sensible reverse solution! So please Caterham and/or Westfield, can we have a car that revs to around 9k (with an engine that is built to last on road and track) and weighs in at, or ideally under, 500kg (Westfields FW 400 comes to mind) - 180 - 200 bhp would be enough with the inevitably lower torque from the smaller engine. Please, please, please, please - oh and don't put a millionaire price sticker on it! For all of the haters out there, a properly set up Westfield is an astonishingly good car. I have had several of both Caterham and Westfield with Vauxhall, Ford and Yamaha engines. The best to drive - the Aerorace, followed closely by the Megabusa (The Aerorace was the only one with a cage and it makes a huge difference to handling). The best all-round, either the s2000 (with a raceline duratec) or the Vauxhall red top Caterham in ITBs and wide track. Jay thank you for the review, I could sense that you were more than a little worried about the insurance excess and the rain, so a big thumbs up for taking the risk and scaring yourself for us viewers. The solution is to spend a lot of time in the little beasts and get used to sliding it at will on every corner so that you can then dial it back for fast travel. After enough learning time your butt dyno/g meter, muscle memory and brain can anticipate or initiate the misbehaviour from the car and it becomes an endless joy.
Cletus, please don't think I'm criticising your choice of helmet and visor when I say, they make your patchwork quilt shirt look like the very zenith of haut couture‼️ The shots of the front suspension doing its stuff are wonderful, and, need I say, a much needed break from your usual exhaust pipe obsession. The 620 is just too powerful. It's been made because the numbers look good in the handbook. To drive it anywhere is a suicide mission. It's one of those cars you should just leave alone.😰😰😰 A great video, I don't know why you didn't like it. I acknowledge the sound wasn't the best, but you're in an open car and hammering round a race track, so such things are expected. Anyway, you never say anything worth listening to, so what's the problem⁉️🤣🤣🤣
I thought it was good - only thing lacking was a forward-facing camera, as someone else mentioned. Sound was fine. I'm never a big fan of track videos: I think it's because when driving on the road reviewers impart much more information than they do/can while hooning around a track.
To be fair, if you lost that at any sort of speed, the excess would have been the least of your problems. Thanks for putting your life on the line though!
JayEmm, I know you won't be offended when I say that this car was completely squandered on you because you didn't even come close to using any of its potentials. In any event, any attempt to waffle while driving such an awesome machine requires the rarified skills of a person such as Tiff Needell. "A man has got to know his limitations,"
I’ve rented a few new Caterhams, 270r and the 360r and although fun I found the quality wanting. The suspension on the firm side almost shakes itself to bits on our crappy uk roads. I found the LSD makes clunking noises once the car has been blasted around for a few days and I wasn’t sure if it was about to breakdown in the middle of nowhere so had to back off a bit which sort of spoiled the day. As said this is an expensive toy and not particularly good value either. I think an Atom would be a better option.
Stuart Bamber it’s a good point Stuart, I’m thinking of taking another one out (Caterham Gatwick hire) this summer so perhaps I’ll try the S and let you know 😎👍
Looks and sounds a bit unhinged. I couldn't squeeze my lardy arse into one of these things, but I could plonk it onto the front seat of a, say... Laverda Jota, Guzzi Le Mans, or maybe even a Morbidelli V8 (mucho £££££)...Go on, you know you want to....
Cant hear a word you're saying. And not enogh camera angles. Where is the cahse car. Come on dude, youve been doing this a while, time to up your game. 5:58 in and I'm not watching anymore. Absolure tripe. Ps Caterham your cars are fantastic, ive had a few, but this drivel????
When YT presenters ask for thumbs up, it feels desperate, cheap, like a plea for help.... So I always give a thumbs down... No one likes cries for up votes.

Oh and here is a shameless plug. Same circuit, Blyton, just last week: ruclips.net/video/2Yh77jhM0-0/видео.html

Totally agree
155-170 for the road is perfect, with the most comfortable seats possible!
Dream car. Love Caterhams
Great video Jay! Like the idea of track reviews, you're comfortable talking and pushing the car...see you on Top Gear in a few years 😉
You were unlucky with the weather to say the least. Still, you didn't hang around so that's worthy of a thumbs-up.
Very cool, it’s amusing how similar our car tastes are, lol.
I think I’m going to have to upgrade from my 420r now , 👍, thanks for the review
I did chuckle about the £6k Insurance excess!😂
Would love one. Love the channel.
Not a bad video at all, especially not for a prototype! :)

What shade of blue is that?
Looks like great fun hard to justify owning one I'm after a weekend toy but looks like it's going to be a 350z
May I ask why you didn’t like the 420 r?
Those balloon garrages are neat
They are called Carcoons
@@JayEmmOnCars that's cool. Those would be really useful for leaving your car in the shed over the winter season.
@@JayEmmOnCars is that an ambulance in one?
Yeah

I would get into way too much trouble with one of these 😈🚀
What is wrong with that? Interesting, informative content about how the car feels to drive... brilliant! Job done.
Zzs tyres never heat up btw
Nice 👍
I'm very surprised they let you out at Blyton without a full face helmet on.
It was only for the duration of filming and I had to ask extremely nicely, it would not normally be allowed for regular track stuff.
Is it the "SV" or is it actually the 'Series 5'?
Officially SV I believe although that I think is code for Series 5
S5 is just the metric code for the SV body

Would the 'S' not have been a better choice if you were bombing about on 'cr*py' British roads?
Stuart Bamber it’s a good point Stuart, I’m thinking of taking another one out (Caterham Gatwick hire) this summer so perhaps I’ll try the S and let you know 😎👍
I’ve got a badge that says “No Fat Chicks” on my dash.
Looks like I’m going to have it replaced with Amended Verbiage.
If these cars weren’t so expensive they would sell like chocolate. Because it’s a nice sporty
sound quality... add subtitles
Great for the school run! Just toss the kids out as you fly past.
A very expensive toy. How you ever get that purchase past your wife is another question.

It can stay lost. I dislike trying to listen to people trying to talk over noisy cars.
Its england so it's either looks like rain ,gonna rain ,or it is raining 🌧 😑
Ps. Enjoyed the video. Unsure why steven Spielberg feels the need to technically dissect it below 🙄
Front facing camera please. Front wheel is entertaining for just a few seconds.
There's a reason I didn't release this video for a long time, that's one of them
Try the atom!
Cant hear a word you're saying. And not enogh camera angles.

Unfortunately YT has created a system where it's fairly necessary. At the very least I never put midroll ads in my videos
