@@TheCameraStoreTV I once owned a Canon years ago for wild life photography. It sucked in low light. I sold it & switched to a comparable Sony & had no problems. I won't be concerned with that NF Filter cuz that's a bright light issue. All the magic seems to happen @ low light.
Excellent review guys! I totally agree about the aperture ring issue, lack of ND filter (why??), still no touchscreen, and variable aperture issue for serious video. Otherwise fantastic camera and IQ in both video and photography ;) Basically a complement to the RX10 II, but not a replacement due to the issues mentioned... Jay
Seems they forgot an important point, lens wobble. That was present in the previous two generations but has been 100% solved in the RX10iii. For videographers that's a key point.
Chris is using the Zoom Assist the wrong way round. It's main purpose is when you are fully zoomed in it can be easy to lose your subject. When you press your customised button for Zoom Assist it zooms out so you get a wider view and can pick your subject up again. Once you have found it you aim the small box at the subject and as soon as you release the button it zooms back in to your previous focal length. Quite useful for telephoto shooting. Nice review though, guys.
Guys, I am a big fan of your channel and your work - thanks for bringing a great balance of subject expertise and entertainment/humor. One comment I have on this review is your comparison with the RX10 II. I have owned all 3 gens (as well as the FZ1000) - a piece you don't mention is just how much of an upgrade this lens on the III is vs. the II or I. Frankly, it is a massive difference. Yes, I agree that the loss of the ND filter and the constant aperture is a bummer, but this lens makes it all worth it. I had always preferred the sharpness and clarity (and zoom range) of the FZ1000 over the first two gens of the RX10, but now the III legitimately blows away the FZ1000. And especially when you see the quality of the III at even the long end of the zoom range, the quality of the images is very impressive in decent light. The RX10 II has always been insufficient in zoom for me personally, especially for kids' events in larger auditoriums or concert halls. This lens wins hand down.
hi guys, love the video! you can totally set the zoom ring to zoom between the focal ranges (24-28-35-50-90-135-200-300-400-500-600) with a tiny turn, so you dont need to turn the zoom ring like crazy also the lens juggler made me super nervous
First, I really like your reviews--this may have to do with having a Canadian wife and my affinity for Canadian culture. But more than that I think you have a great balance of entertainment and information. With that said, over the past two months I've been waiting for this review, but it came just a bit two late. Basically, I have $2000 American budgeted to pay for a camera with the intention of primarily shooting video. My finalists were the RX10iii, the GH4, the D750, the D500, and the A7ii. My primary criteria were little rolling shutter, little moire, good lowlight performance, headphone jack, and good video features. 4K would be nice but not necessary. My deadline for making the purchase was last Friday. I decided on the RX10iii and submitted the order. Over the weekend I thought of some of the issues you would later point out in your review and decided to cancel the order Monday morning. I decided to choose between the D750 and the D500. I finally ordered the D750 because, for me, the full-frame sensor is more important than 4k with a 2.5 crop. Anyway, great review. Thanks for your work.
Awesome review as always! Jordan's comments were as expected. Extra features that don't help (and actually hinder) the video side. I recently bought an RX10ii for my business. It's the first non-camcorder camera that I've ever used for video. Image quality is great and the slow motion is cool, but damn do I ever miss B.O.S.S. and a fully articulated touchscreen (with selectable focus tracking). The new AX53 would be a contender if it had a better lens, flatter picture profiles, and some more manual features. It seems there's always something useful that is left out, no matter what camera you get. I guess that's how they keep people buying new ones every year or two. An updated AX100 (with the newer 1" sensor) would probably fit the bill perfectly. But something tells me they would price it way too high to be worth it. :(
Excellent review. I was so close to upgrading my MK II, to the III. That said, your point at 9:28 was the deciding factor in my deciding to stay with the RX10 II. JUst not sure how often I would use the 600mm lens. I just love using the MK II, for video and stills. (Quality and ease of operating) So why spend the $, if I have to be concerned about the non constant F factor, while zooming. Thanks so much for posting.
Shi Womino but why are you zooming during shooting? I don't find a zoom during a video aesthetically pleasing and to be honest, it's somewhat dated. It was popular during the 1990s
The competion uses the bsi cmos from Sony. So they can do it too. Fun fact a Canon G7x(mk2) beats a 7d mk2 by a landslide in this aspect. All Apsc sensors save for canon can do it too(80d being the exception) . Then m43's olympus since the EM5 and panasonic since the Gx7.
The problem with many people here posting negative or "mixed" comments about this camera is they keep forgetting that they are camera enthusiasts/geeks/nerds. They will pick apart everything wrong with this camera, including price, as if most people will go along with the way they feel. RUclips commenters and other forums represent the smallest of minorities in the camera buying world. I'm betting less the 1/10th of a percent. For the rest of the camera buying world most people will walk into Best Buy and say, "Oh this camera fits my needs perfectly. I don't like switching lenses, the zoom is great and I like Sony". They will be more than happy to pay due to perceived value. That's why Sony gets away with over-charging the A7RII by $1000. Perceived value.
Looks like a bit of flickering at 7:42 (in the brighter areas) Was that the FS5 again? And regarding the Sony, for the price it seems an odd move. While a cheap bridge camera would benefit from the longer lens at the expense of the other features (constant aperture, ND filter, etc) this isn't a cheap bridge camera. The majority of people willing to drop so much money, I think, would be better served by (and would rather have) those features than a longer, variable aperture zoom.

Using that camera for the last week and i'm super impressed. I don't do video, so no need for the inbuild nd Filter. Regarding backbutton-af: set any of the custom buttons to AF/MF control hold and set the camera to MF. Once you press the assigned Button, the camera will instantly set Focus on your subject!
I had the Panasonic FZ1000 which took decent photos. I went to dpreview.com and compared the Panasonic to the Sony RX10 lll on the studio comparison chart at ISO's of 100, 200, and 400 since I enjoy shooting wildlife at the zoo. Since both have a 1 inch sensor I didn't expect much difference. But to my surprise, the RX10 lll was significantly sharper and had more detail. I guess it's all about the lens. So I just returned from B&H with my new RX10 lll. And lucky me, it was the last one in stock! Can't wait to break it in at the Bronx Zoo!
+Kristopher Campbell Agreed unfortunately Samsung withdrew from the market. Being the only company that could rival Sony sensor technology it's a DAMN shame. That NX-1 was truly ahead of it's time.
I bought this camera recently, and i must say it is excellent. aperture ring is kind of annoying, but that is something i can forgive them. I don't like touch screen so there is a plus from me for Sony, help with focus was also annoying, but I turned that thing off :) one of the problems which bothers me is support which they don't have for my country so I cant buy time lapse app... slowmotion videos are very interesting feature, even at 1000 fps, with enough light you can make nice video....
I'd recommand to use as for the lens here a quality Zeiss T* UV Filter, just for front element protection (Dust, scratches, Sand, Pollen, etc) - and to use the Lens Hood under these circumstances. Otherwise, very nice Video, Chris. :-)
Back button focus: focus switch to MF (I know, makes no sense), and AEL button set to "AF/MF Control Hold". Also, a dab of hot glue / similar on the AEL button itself makes it much easier to find/press. Latest and original firmware version 1.00.
Hi there, in relation to the video capabilities of the rx10 iii, you mentioned loosing the open aperture when zooming out. Doesn't this camera have an auto ISO function? Plus would this not compensate for the loss of light when zooming out and loosing light as you do so?
IMPORTANT QUESTION FOR JORDAN: One of the CRITICAL updates to the RX10 3 that you missed is being able to view (in-camera) SLOG-2 footage in NATIVE COLOR PROFILE! This would be -MY- best selling point for an upgrade as I am shooting a short film with my RX10 2! ALSO... Sony stated that they are [still] keeping the RX10 2 in the lineup - ANY WORD FROM SONY IF VIEWING SLOG 2 IN A NATURAL COLOR PROFILE (unflat-saturated) WILL POSSIBLY BE RELEASED AS A FIRMWARE UPGRADE FOR THE RX10 2?????
My Sony contacts aren't high enough up the ladder to know (or at least tell me) what's coming in future firmware updates. I'd hope Sony would add the feature, as it plans to keep both the RX10 II and III on the market. That said, using the Gamma Display Preview initially really excited me, but I've found that it guides you to a standard exposure, where you should really be shooting S-Log 2 overexposed. I recommend the Sony FHD5 monitor, which allows you to preview a 709 look with exposure brought down 1 or 2 stops. I used that setup shooting the film 'Metanoia' last summer and it worked amazingly well! Jordan @ TCSTV

I think there's a statement around 8:10 that needs redacting. Panasonic objectively did not have the best AF in mirrorless at the time this video was filmed.
Point to point, no mirrorless are as fast as the Panasonics. I do find the Sony A6300 to have better continuous AF, but that's it. I think Chris' statement is valid. Jordan @ TCSTV
TheCameraStoreTV Clarify what you mean by point to point. You mean from closest focus to farthest focus? That's primarily a quality of the lens more so than the camera. The A6300 continuous AF is almost the same as the almost two year old NX1, which I would argue has better AF across the board than anything currently in Panasonic's lineup. I'm aware you guys were not enthused with the camera when you had it, I'm not sure why you guys had the issues you said you did. Next time around maybe you could show us direct comparisons like Max Yuryev and Tony Northrup do. Also, maybe I just missed it, but did you guys mention this was a Sony press event? I'll point out the same things I just did to Max, these guys on the boards are actually very easy tracking targets being shot in ideal Miami light. This is basically the best scenario for Sony to show off AF.
zvxcvxcz By point to point, I mean single point AF between two subjects. We have found the DFD system to be consistently faster, using a wide variety of lenses. I can speak from experience, as I own an A6300. We've stopped comparing anything to the Samsung NX1 as we no longer have access to one. We sold our store demo when Samsung first started phasing out of the market six months ago. We've mentioned Sony press events when we're at one, but this video was shot in Calgary with a production unit. Jordan @ TCSTV
TheCameraStoreTV Which Panasonic would you say is the fastest (with which lens as well) I am interested in taking a proper look when I get a chance. From what little time I have used them though, I'm sceptical as they certainly never felt fast in my use. My apologies, I've been jumping between videos, I was thinking of the one where you're in Miami with the A6300.
I wonder if I might pick your brain about one aspect of the camera based on your experience with it. I am a nature photographer and film a lot of action shot such as birds in flight. My typical carry around rig is the Canon7D Mark II with a Canon 100-400mm L lens. I love this camera but my one frustration is struggling wit finding the best settings for shooting birds in flight for the fastest lock on to the subject, and the ability to change focus as the subject moves towards or away from the shooting position. What would you recommend as the best settings for the camera for using it for birds in flight? As an aside, the sports action choice in the SCN mode has been about the best so far, but I know there has to be a optimal setting of the various, focus, etc., parameters for the mission. For most people that live in the real world, this camera is weapons grade. I have it and I love it. Hardly ever use my ILC cams any more. My kit now is an RX1rII and this RX10III.
Thanks for helping me to feel better that I bought the mk 2 just weeks before the mk 3 was released. really upset about whether to sell it to get the upgrade or not. Think I'll just keep the mk 2 until they put a bigger sensor in. but still not sure about how to back-button focus, like the A6000 series has.

I am looking for an 'all-in-one' camera - something that I can snap a high res photo with WHILE FILMING. Have you tried this? Does the taking of the photo interrupt the video in any way (or lead to the audio of the photo capture being recorded?)
So Basically Rx10ii and Rx10iii are aiming for somewhat different purpose like a7r and a7s. Same series, different purpose. If we don't treat the rx10iii as a replacement but a branch of the series, then I see the reason for this camera to exist.

I have a quick question for Jordan. When you were talking about punching in to manual focus and the image being so soft that it made it difficult. Was your display quality set to "standard" or "high"? I recently ran into some trouble with my Sony cams having the same issue and made it extremely difficult to judge the quality on the display. On my RX10ii the setting is on page 2 of the toolbox menu.

I've been holding off for many months now to see if the Nikon DL24-500 might be better than this Sony, but I'm about ready to give up on Nikon ever delivering it. I have the LUMIX FZ300, which I mainly use for wildlife or landscape videos. But I am disappointed by the Video stabilisation. So was planning to get a Rx10 m3. After watching this video I think I should get an rx100 m4 and keep the fz300 for that amazing constant f2.8 till 600mm.

As I won't need 600mm equivalent very often, I'll stick with my RX10II. Sony are pushing the technology envelope and I applaud them for this but what lets me down with them is ergonomics, both in their menus and physically with their controls. Will I also have the A7R2, I find that I grab my X-Pro2 much more often. The feel and the controls make me want to shoot.

I've found 24-105mm is one of the most useful zoom ranges for filming, and it would be nice if more manufacturers held a constant aperture in there. Anything longer starts to turn into a shaky mess while filming handheld. Keep up the great work! :)
Since this camera is quite expensive for 1", would you buy this camera? Or a micro four thirds + an entry level zoom lens? Probably for the same price??

It is all about the lens...would you pay $500 for an image stabilized Zeiss F4 200-600mm lens to add to your DSLR? I would. If you absolutely don't need the extra range, then buy mark i or II. But to have the capability to have this quality zoom range in a single compact unit is amazing to me.
For an amateur who can get this camera for under 700$ because of my work should I buy?. I’ll mainly be doing portraits and landscapes with alittle bit of video and action shots. I’m still ignorant to camera terminology
Hey guys, would you recommend the RX10 III or the FZ1000 for a 70% stills/30% video kind of guy? I really like the Sony and I can afford it since I'm selling my Pentax gear, but the FZ1000's pricing is very tempting, although the camera doesn't seem as exciting as the RX10 III to me.

Hi I am planning a trip to russia via china. It is a longest journey I have done. I'd like to take long continious video for my documentry. Which would be good? Panasonic g7 or sony rx10 ii?I dont want the cameras to be tedious and battery life to be great. I also want great quality. Does the 1 inch sensor of sony rx 10 ii provide quality footage comparing to micro four thirds of panasonic g7?
How do I shoot through small gaps in trees etc. Or shoot through bars etc in a cage or zoo, I assume it's to to with focus settings, I'm struggling to figure it out, is it even possible

I agree with Jordan 1000%. The range and the built in ND makes the version 2 all you need for video. It's s something I've considered when renting.

Using that camera for the last week and i'm super impressed. I don't do video, so no need for the inbuild nd Filter.
Regarding backbutton-af: set any of the custom buttons to AF/MF control hold and set the camera to MF. Once you press the assigned Button, the camera will instantly set Focus on your subject!

I had the Panasonic FZ1000 which took decent photos. I went to dpreview.com and compared the Panasonic to the Sony RX10 lll on the studio comparison chart at ISO's of 100, 200, and 400 since I enjoy shooting wildlife at the zoo. Since both have a 1 inch sensor I didn't expect much difference. But to my surprise, the RX10 lll was significantly sharper and had more detail. I guess it's all about the lens. So I just returned from B&H with my new RX10 lll. And lucky me, it was the last one in stock! Can't wait to break it in at the Bronx Zoo!
I feel like Sony has the best potential to build the best overall camera. But they just never do.
Samsung did, people still buy Sony and Canon, logic.

Being the only company that could rival Sony sensor technology it's a DAMN shame.

I bought this camera recently, and i must say it is excellent. aperture ring is kind of annoying, but that is something i can forgive them. I don't like touch screen so there is a plus from me for Sony, help with focus was also annoying, but I turned that thing off :)
one of the problems which bothers me is support which they don't have for my country so I cant buy time lapse app... slowmotion videos are very interesting feature, even at 1000 fps, with enough light you can make nice video....
Is the built in ND filter a software or a hardware feature and why don't we see it more often in cameras since it's really useful?

I'd recommand to use as for the lens here a quality Zeiss T* UV Filter, just for front element protection (Dust, scratches, Sand, Pollen, etc) - and to use the Lens Hood under these circumstances. Otherwise, very nice Video, Chris. :-)
nice review bros. i don't really use the telephoto that much either, gonna save money by going rx10 ii.
There's an option in the menu which allows you to increase the zooming speed when using the ring, so the first point is actually not really valid...

You didn't talk about the manual focus ring, it must have it, like the HX400V. It is a very good feature.
Back button focus: focus switch to MF (I know, makes no sense), and AEL button set to "AF/MF Control Hold". Also, a dab of hot glue / similar on the AEL button itself makes it much easier to find/press. Latest and original firmware version 1.00.

Hi there, in relation to the video capabilities of the rx10 iii, you mentioned loosing the open aperture when zooming out. Doesn't this camera have an auto ISO function? Plus would this not compensate for the loss of light when zooming out and loosing light as you do so?
IMPORTANT QUESTION FOR JORDAN:
One of the CRITICAL updates to the RX10 3 that you missed is being able to view (in-camera) SLOG-2 footage in NATIVE COLOR PROFILE! This would be -MY- best selling point for an upgrade as I am shooting a short film with my RX10 2!
ALSO... Sony stated that they are [still] keeping the RX10 2 in the lineup - ANY WORD FROM SONY IF VIEWING SLOG 2 IN A NATURAL COLOR PROFILE (unflat-saturated) WILL POSSIBLY BE RELEASED AS A FIRMWARE UPGRADE FOR THE RX10 2?????

You have the contacts at Sony - I just need to know if a firmware update will be issued for the RX10 2????
My Sony contacts aren't high enough up the ladder to know (or at least tell me) what's coming in future firmware updates. I'd hope Sony would add the feature, as it plans to keep both the RX10 II and III on the market.
That said, using the Gamma Display Preview initially really excited me, but I've found that it guides you to a standard exposure, where you should really be shooting S-Log 2 overexposed. I recommend the Sony FHD5 monitor, which allows you to preview a 709 look with exposure brought down 1 or 2 stops. I used that setup shooting the film 'Metanoia' last summer and it worked amazingly well!

those greens of Sony FS5 look so radioactive... Is a personal taste at grading or just the way the sony renders those tones?

I think there's a statement around 8:10 that needs redacting. Panasonic objectively did not have the best AF in mirrorless at the time this video was filmed.
Point to point, no mirrorless are as fast as the Panasonics. I do find the Sony A6300 to have better continuous AF, but that's it. I think Chris' statement is valid.

TheCameraStoreTV Clarify what you mean by point to point. You mean from closest focus to farthest focus? That's primarily a quality of the lens more so than the camera. The A6300 continuous AF is almost the same as the almost two year old NX1, which I would argue has better AF across the board than anything currently in Panasonic's lineup. I'm aware you guys were not enthused with the camera when you had it, I'm not sure why you guys had the issues you said you did. Next time around maybe you could show us direct comparisons like Max Yuryev and Tony Northrup do. Also, maybe I just missed it, but did you guys mention this was a Sony press event? I'll point out the same things I just did to Max, these guys on the boards are actually very easy tracking targets being shot in ideal Miami light. This is basically the best scenario for Sony to show off AF.
zvxcvxcz By point to point, I mean single point AF between two subjects. We have found the DFD system to be consistently faster, using a wide variety of lenses. I can speak from experience, as I own an A6300.
We've stopped comparing anything to the Samsung NX1 as we no longer have access to one. We sold our store demo when Samsung first started phasing out of the market six months ago.
We've mentioned Sony press events when we're at one, but this video was shot in Calgary with a production unit.

I wonder if I might pick your brain about one aspect of the camera based on your experience with it. I am a nature photographer and film a lot of action shot such as birds in flight. My typical carry around rig is the Canon7D Mark II with a Canon 100-400mm L lens. I love this camera but my one frustration is struggling wit finding the best settings for shooting birds in flight for the fastest lock on to the subject, and the ability to change focus as the subject moves towards or away from the shooting position. What would you recommend as the best settings for the camera for using it for birds in flight? As an aside, the sports action choice in the SCN mode has been about the best so far, but I know there has to be a optimal setting of the various, focus, etc., parameters for the mission. For most people that live in the real world, this camera is weapons grade. I have it and I love it. Hardly ever use my ILC cams any more. My kit now is an RX1rII and this RX10III.
The minute it becomes available I want to see the Nikon DL 24-500 review.
Thanks for helping me to feel better that I bought the mk 2 just weeks before the mk 3 was released. really upset about whether to sell it to get the upgrade or not. I am looking for an 'all-in-one' camera - something that I can snap a high res photo with WHILE FILMING. Have you tried this? Does the taking of the photo interrupt the video in any way (or lead to the audio of the photo capture being recorded?)
So Basically Rx10ii and Rx10iii are aiming for somewhat different purpose like a7r and a7s. Same series, different purpose.
If we don't treat the rx10iii as a replacement but a branch of the series, then I see the reason for this camera to exist.
The FZ1000 is extremely cheap right now. Why should I spend 3.5 times more for the RX 10 III?
buy the RX10 2. FZ1000 has no 4k, no log recoding, no ND filter and is bulky as hell.

I like it but I wonder if it will work on a Pilotfly H2 gimbal.
I have a quick question for Jordan. When you were talking about punching in to manual focus and the image being so soft that it made it difficult. Was your display quality set to "standard" or "high"? I recently ran into some trouble with my Sony cams having the same issue and made it extremely difficult to judge the quality on the display. On my RX10ii the setting is on page 2 of the toolbox menu.

We think we've solved it. Or rather, a helpful tweet from a viewer solved it. Make sure 'lens correction' is disabled when using the Sigma MC-11 adapter.

I have the LUMIX FZ300, which I mainly use for wildlife or landscape videos. But I am disappointed by the Video stabilisation. So was planning to get a Rx10 m3. After watching this video I think I should get an rx100 m4 and keep the fz300 for that amazing constant f2.8 till 600mm.

As I won't need 600mm equivalent very often, I'll stick with my RX10II. Sony are pushing the technology envelope and I applaud them for this but what lets me down with them is ergonomics, both in their menus and physically with their controls. Will I also have the A7R2, I find that I grab my X-Pro2 much more often. The feel and the controls make me want to shoot.
How does the image stabilization compare to that of the Canon G3X?
can you shoot at aperture f8 if you want to for sports or are you stuck with f4?

I've found 24-105mm is one of the most useful zoom ranges for filming, and it would be nice if more manufacturers held a constant aperture in there. Anything longer starts to turn into a shaky mess while filming handheld. Keep up the great work! :)

the 120 fps footage at 10:15 looks really bad, even the 240 fps footage looks much sharper. I assume that's a missfocus?

It is all about the lens...would you pay $500 for an image stabilized Zeiss F4 200-600mm lens to add to your DSLR? I would. If you absolutely don't need the extra range, then buy mark i or II. But to have the capability to have this quality zoom range in a single compact unit is amazing to me.
