    00:14 - 03:08 The pros and cons of hourly rate
    03:09 - 03:38 Keep track of time it takes you to detail a car
    03:47 - 07:47 The pros and cons of flat right and how I do it
    07:48 - 08:49 Other factors to consider that will affect pricing
    08:50 - 10:13 What you should do when you start pricing
    In this video, I go over two methods you can charge for your service; hourly rate and flat rate.
    Like everything else in life and business, both have their pros and cons when it comes to your detailing business.
    If you're barely starting off and still aren't sure of how long a detail will take you, I definitely recommend going with an hourly rate.
    Once you get the hang of things (how long you take, how much you want to make, etc), then I would move to a flat rate system.

    Flat rate. Never quote sight unseen. You learn the hard way lol. interiors will eat your lunch.

      +scott sailer Are you saying you always meet the customer in person to give them a quote? I don't think I ever really did that

    • @beamerstrumpet
      @beamerstrumpet 8 лет назад +5

      not in the beginning. and I try as much as possible now. I Also ask for them to take Pics of the inside of their car. this is almost my exact reply " This package starts at $XXX and is contingent on actual condition once I arrive."
      Most ppl only want to FB message me and If they wont send pics or answer a phone,, Im not wasting my time.

    • @DetailGroove
      @DetailGroove  8 лет назад +3

      +scott sailer That's interesting. I hardly ever ask for photos now. After doing enough interior cars, I can properly assume the condition the interior is going to be in and how long it's going to take me to restore it
      I think 90% of the time, an interior cleaning takes between 4 to 5 hours and I charge between $135 to $225. Regardless if it's a sedan, coupe, or SUV

    • @beamerstrumpet
      @beamerstrumpet 8 лет назад +4

      do you have "Red Flag" lines from pple? My favorite "well the inside is not that bad" DING DING DING its bad! ppl who say I just want the inside and i want vents and tracks ect. but its not that bad,,,OK that will still be 100 until I see it. but if im doing niches and crannies

    • @DetailGroove
      @DetailGroove  8 лет назад +5

      +scott sailer Yeah, I hear those all the time. I only offer two types of interior cleanings: 1) Maintenance cleaning and 2) Full Interior Cleaning.. If your car is in great condition and only needs a light clean up to get back into an awesome condition, we'll go with that. If it's anything less than already in amazing condition, we will go with the Full Interior Cleaning.
      There's no half way anything. Either it's in great condition (which it most likely won't be unless it's a new car) or it's not in great condition (which it's usually not in great condition)

    I would go with a flat rate because at times you can move a little faster and maybe cut a 4hr detail to a 3hr detail. I would calculate my flat rate based on a 4hr period so it take up to 4hrs but if I finish in 2hrs I still gain.
    Also should flat rate be a general flat rate or do I give each client a price based on the condition of the vehicle. For instance the flat rate could be $80 for small/compact, $100 for mid/full sized, $135 small to midsize SUV, $150 for large SUVs and trucks. Or should I use an evaluation system where I price the vehicle when I see its condition and figure out how long it would take me to clean that particular vehicle?

    • @DetailGroove
      @DetailGroove  6 лет назад

      For services like full interior cleanings or wash and waxes, I give the same flat rate pricing for specific type of vehicles. I know most sedans or regular sized trucks will take me under 4 hours. So I always charge $140 to $180. If it's paint correction, that is per car but still with a general price range each time

  • @jfkmydad69
    @jfkmydad69 7 лет назад +12

    I'm like you, I charge a flat rate, because it is comforting for the customer, and really is fair to you.. If a customer asks, it will always be a quote of 4 to 6 hours, (unless excessive filth-size). If deemed excessive, an additional upcharge of 35 to 100 dollars. You are right, as you get experience you will figure out the right pricing for your market.

  • @midnightmystery544

    Glad to know you now glide through the interiors. it can be a challenge. did that include upgrading equipment? like getting a stean cleanner and a carpet extractor...or you don' t rely on those 100% due to the type if cars you work on..

    • @itsoscargil
      @itsoscargil 8 лет назад +1

      Not at all. I could speed through em with a steamer or no steamer. More equipment doesn't always mean you become more efficient- especially if the current process that you're using is flawed. You should only use extra equipment to increase your productivity- not fix a broken system.
      I have all my tools and chemicals at hand, I follow an exact process each time I clean a car, I double-time everything I do, and I don't get distracted

    I use High Quality Products (Chemical Guys) only! bulk sizes will save you money.. take your initial profit when you starting out and buy quality brushes, microfiber cleaning cloths, etc and you'll get a better end product than you will with cheap products. I can tell the difference with those high dollar products with 1 use. I charged in the beginning $30 any size full detail so I could build up a small loyal customer base. I have now gone to a BASE PRICE of $45 for any size and upon inspection I can know how much more it will cost and an exact time it will take... Like he says the experience of washing and detailing cars will pay off in the end.. My market will only allow for the base price and up-charge upon visual inspection. It works, believe me.. I have spent 6 hours on the nastiest car ever and I can tell by looking how much to charge.. That job would have been $300

Too much marketing to catch people attention with silly words and "technologies" and they are mainly meant for the consumer. Not a professional detailer. And about difficult customers: when they are not happy with your job and after you try to fix the issues they still have issues, etc, etc. That is my main concern dealing with those difficult people and to make sure that after a hard day's job I am going to get my money. It takes around 2 hours for a wash and inside clean and detail. if car is super dirty inside go up to 6 hours if you are doing it by yourself. I charge a flat rate when I started out but I have to go up on the price because I hired 1 person to help and the price change didn't go over that well... I am now at a base price of $45 any size car. when I see the vehicle and can really look at it I will qoute a larger amount if needed.. simple enough to do that.

    I stopped watching your video at the 4:45 mark. I couldn't help but type some comments here. I have been taking my car to regular car washes and also private detail places here in NY. Let's start off if you are starting your own detail business where you are going to where the customer is in a mobile vehicle and you have to hire another person to do the work with you, then of course you have to charge more to cover your supplies, travel expense and profit margin. You didn't make that clear in the video. I go to a detail shop where they have several guys working on my car over the course of an hour or so depending on what I want done. To wash and hand wax the car besides vacuuming interior and cleaning windows and wiping down seats in such a business where I go is around 75 dollars which isn't bad. A car dealer will charge 100 bucks. It's more if you want to shampoo the carpet and you can add maybe another 50 bucks if the car is in good shape to begin with. If you are working yourself as an independent business mobile detail guy; yes it can be realistic to ask 200 bucks for a lot of work like that. My shop where I go just raised their prices which is not cost effective. It was 15 dollars to wash car and vacuum, clean windows etc Now they raised it to 20 which is still ok. That job takes like a half hour as they are thorough. Get this. Spray wax used to be an additional 10 bucks for a total of 30 dollars. They raised the price of the spray wax 20 dollars and it takes less time maybe 10 minutes to apply it on the car and wipe around. I can buy the bottle myself and do it.

    • @DetailGroove
      @DetailGroove  7 лет назад +4

      Yeah, so there's nothing wrong with that. Just buy the supplies and do it yourself. That'll work!

      That’s great, but isn’t that the catch? Most ppl have their time invested elsewhere than to wash and detail their own vehicle on a weekly basis. Which

    • @barbaroacosta5335
      @barbaroacosta5335 4 года назад +1

      @@vincealince_SRT yeap. It comes down to opportunity cost. Several people would rather pay $50 to $100 per hour for you to clean their cars because they make more than that, and during their free time they'll rather spend it with family.

    What's the best way to Pay Workers?

    • @DetailGroove
      @DetailGroove  8 лет назад

      If you live in the US, then the best way to pay someone is having them as an employee with a W2 on an hourly wage. Most detailers won't go that route so the next in line can be as a contractor (1099). You can pay them by car. You pay them $X regardless of how long they take to complete the car.
      Going the contractor route, you have no say so over them. You cannot tell them when to come in, when to leave, how to use what, etc... they are not an employee of your business and should not be treated as such. They also have to use their own chemicals and equipment

      It depends on where you live, your production time (how long it takes you), how much you want to make per month, etc... So it all depends

      Detail Groove ya you would think californias bay area would have higher pricing lol theres guys who do it for 20 bucks how am i supposed to compete with that

      Why would you compete with them? Want to charge lower prices? Be my guest.. There's nothing different from detailing than there is in dentistry or in carpet cleaning, regardless of the market that you're in.
      There's always going to be others MUCCHHH cheaper than you and there's going to be people MUUCHHH more expensive to you. It's up to you to decide where you want to fall in that spectrum

      angel 0 for 20 bucks I wouldn't let them get within 50 feet of my car. People who charge that little aren't worth competing with cause their service isn't worth it. As long as the customer is happy and get what they pay for you'll be fine
