With Bob Harris ( Old Grey Whistle Test )
Van starts the conversation in classic mode ,
Bob H: How long ago did you plan this visit ( to the UK ) ?
Van M: About 2 or 3 minutes ago ! Excellent reaction from Poker face Bob, not too sure if he caught it ....... Видеоклипы
This the most whispery interview in the history of the BBC.
Right. The guy speaks in such hushed tones, as if they were plotting an escape or something. It's phony. But Van didn't freak out and throw a tantrum, so I guess the strategy worked.
This could qualify as ASMR! ..... it's kind of relaxing listening to it......mind you it doesn't reveal alot about Van Morrison. He doesn't give much away.....many interviewers have found this over the years
@@haskellbob it was his 'style' or trademark, and he became known as Bob 'whispering' Harris. This stuck and he came to see it as his USP in the end! He presented a live rock/pop show on TV in the 70's and 80's called 'The Old Grey Whistle Test' ....bizarre title for a TV programme, but then the 70's was a fairly bizarre and oddball decade! Great music but quite a weird decade.
@@haskellbob Bobs a great interviewer and he’s called whispering bob for a reason because of his very relaxed nature and he listens and never interrupts the artists he talks to.
Whispering Bob - the man is an icon in music presentation
You can tell Van is tired from travel. He's a musical genius. No one like him. He's still productive at 76. Saw him in Chicago May 2022. He still has it. Always a great band accompanying his soulful voice.. His catalog of songs are only rivaled by Dylan, but his voice is way better. The Belfast cowboy still rides.
awesome
I agree about the band he uses. They're excellent. They rock! Even though they're old geezers, they still have some amazing energy to put into music.
Although Astral Weeks can stand up against anything and he also has some other awesome record (eg Moondsnce, Veedon Fleece), overall there's no way his catalogue is close to Dylan's - and Dylan in his prime vocally was easily a match for Van. Even today Bob's great grizzled voice is making music 100 times the impact of Van's.
I disagree!
When Whispering Bob met Muttering Van...
😂😂
Bob talks like a kind youth councilor speaking to a troubled kid. Not at all directing that at Van.
"Just digging the scene, ya know." VM
Thats the only thing I heard
Bob Harris was an absolute legend in the UK . If he interviewed you , you knew it was the beginning of something great .
The Minstrel boy
The Bard
The Troubadour
The Philosopher
The Singer
The Poet
The Composer
The Genius...
The Man....
Sir Van Morrison!!!
If you close your eyes Van Morrison sounds just as he does today. His singing voice is remarkably strong still.Hes quite something.☘️
He sure is Jane . You might as well call him gifted because he is . One of the greatest to over do ..
What’s your favorite song ?
I love Van Morrison at any of his age. He is eternal. ❤
I love this interview. They all are sweet, thoughtful, beautiful, quiet and enjoyable to listen to.❤❤❤
You mean effeminate?
What a good interviewer Bob Harris is. Van was notoriously hostile to interviews but Bob mellows everything out!
Oh my! A young Van, shy and soft spoken. He looks good but tired, I've never seen him interviewed with others from his band before! This video is a Gem!!
@SlipKid84 this is 73 so hes about 28 here? Pretty young, all things considering.
'Tired and emotional'
@musikfanhawk .......astounding that Astral weeks the album was done in 10 hours .
The interviewer seems so gentle bless him and I think he draws Van out as I have always said Van is not standoffish but pretty shy and he expresses himself through his music.
Yes, totally agree, the skill depends on the interviewer not the interviewed. Example on Vans website the interviews with Leo Green
The interviewer was a DJ on British radio known as ‘Whispering’ Bob Harris for reasons obvious here!
Bob Harris is a legend in the UK, not only DJ but long-time presenter of TV show in 70s The Old Grey Whistle Test where virtually every big name band/artist performed live. Hard to pick favourites but Bowie and Lynyrd Skynyrd right up there.
Only 10 hours for astral weeks!?
That is something special
I enjoy contrasting the younger Van with the elder Van and noting the variances between the two. Morrison is one of the most fascinating reservoirs of musical creativity in our time. Transitions from the earlier Van to the later Van can be very informative regarding his music as a whole.
I’m so glad this video exists. I love VM ❤️
Thanks! I love seeing the young Van in this interview. In ‘73 we were all young and pretty lol
I love the literal tongue-in-cheek move after speaking the name of Bert Berns. There were things he wanted to say and did/could not, I'd wager.
Watching and listening to Van Morrison in his most creative period is so interesting, so thanks for sharing this interview!
Van is a unique artist - so soulful- sheer class 🤟🏼
This is a terrific ASMR video!
1970s Amsr
@@donut4730 "AOR ASMR"
Good interviewer. Van the young man!
This reminds me of they old videos from the 40’s/50’s you get of doctors interviewing psychiatric patients
😂🤣
Only thing is which one is the physician
lmao
pretty 🤩 funny statement Emma, I like! Van sure was a cute youth, love his quick smile and thoughtful answers to questions.
Hahahaha
A musical genius for over five decades........
The double album It's too late to stop now is a joyous masterpiece, I recall seeing it on BBC2 sight and sound in concert in 1974 and was capivated, love it still.
Awesome album
A GOD onstage. A shy kid offstage. A genius, no matter how, when and where.
Beautiful comment.
Great artist (calls himself a worker btw), great interviewer, deep mutual respect, interesting outcome, the equation is simple and rewarding for everybody for God's sake.
bob harris nearly hypnotized his interview subjects and to do what he did here with van, well it's groundbreaking psychoanalysis
Thank YOU Woolhall. for sharing this, appears relaxed interview, among all four people. Very enjoyable to listen to with Van Morrison and his Friends..
VAN MORRISON'S SENSITIVITY AS A PERSON AND ARTIST SHINES THROUGH IN THIS INTERVIEW
Very spot on Evelyn . Right behind ya in that . What’s your favorite song of Van Morrison ?
This interview was quite tense yet quite soothing at the same time...
So nice and gentle. Why can't this mindset be applied today? Especially for 'sensitive' artists like Van so obviously is? Let's go back to the future!!
LMFAO - so fkn high!! VAN THE MAN!! Does not seem to be terribly interested in the line of questioning!! And yes, the American audiences are much more rowdy!
You obviously not been to a Glasgow gig
Van has so many records I love. Of course Astral Weeks, an unprecedented work of genius. I also love the rocking stuff he did, like Wild Night always gets me going. Bottom line is I love Van.
Bob Harris, the parent to all musicians.
The best interviwer ever, so nice and gentel and humbele Whispering Bob Harris :)
Absolutely, a genuine fan of the music, and presenter of the greatest music show ever. Long may he run.
Nah, his assessment of every piece of music is the same he's too hyperbolic - everything's "fantastic"
1973 - The era of the intense television close up.
Wow.... they actually recorded some of the tracks for 'It's Too Late To Stop Now' later that day!
❤ ☘ ❤ Van Morrison 😘
🥰 "minutes ago" or months ago.. Love them for years! ❤
Great one.. Woolhall 👍 Thank you ..🌻
👍🌹
David Hayes is one of the greatest bass players ever !
I was in my mothers womb at the time this was filmed fighting with my twin brother no doubt - who would’ve thought that I would end up a van nut.
He went over to Ireland on the 20th Oct 73 to travel all over his homeland - the day I was born
😂👌
Thanks Woolhall. A very lovely interview
My God, I LOVE this man.
intersting how Irish accent blends into American so quickly, part of where it came from.
I love Van and the band and always have.... but yes, hyper-quiet, I slumped into my whiskey!
thats funny dude
@@vanessathomas728 he has that affect on me!
I would like if people would stop picking on my Celtic 1st cousin, some people find fault his personality, they miss a very important point by a million miles, Van is a music man, a storyteller a poet, he not here to explain every word he ever wrote down, he is not here to give you false pretense, he leaves it to you to make up your own mind, he knows what he knows and gets on with his music and life, you never hear Van asking other people questions like explain who you are and what you do, Van has more important things to do like making brilliant music which as fresh as a daisy all those years later and still make stunning great music and playing never to me forgotten shows
james bradshaw i moved from my hometown of victoria to western australia when i was in my twenties. i rented a house and bought a linn sondek from scotland and the english Naim amp, the little rectangle box ones, and i bought all the van morrison albums of the 70's / 80's era. One of my favs was live at the grand opera house belfast. I thought van morrison was a musical god. The best melodic voice and perfect pitch, but also something you could feel deep in your soul. truly beautiful music.
Yeah, what you said.
Is Van Morrison a rangers fan
@1993 linda gail lewis, jerry Lee's sister. How many ex husbands? Sued him too, claiming he promised to marry her. She dropped both. Money money thats all she wanted. Van wanted to make music
@1993 cases? Spill it
Yes every interviewers dream ! But when he does talk ,it seems just right .
From what I've heard the Astral Weeks album was recorded with studio musicians who had never heard any of the songs before and just busked their way through all the songs. This is what ended up on the released album.
think it was a bit more involved than that.....
certainly there was a degree of improv with the mind blowing double bass playing of richard davis tho !
and remember The Man already knew some songs before going into the studio anyway....
At what Library was this interview filmed ?
Nice video. Thanks.
Van is funny. He’s just not able to talk in interviews. He does his talking via the music - a very real musician!
It's April 2023, Van was young, so very very young. (The Street Only Knew Your Name).
Thank you very much for posting this! Especially considering how there aren't too many van interviews online, also this was the year he released Hard Nose The Highway which I think is his third best album behind astral weeks and moondance. Great video
Is this a frickin’ whispering competition?
lol
lol Bob Harris does have such a calming voice
They call him Whispering Bob. His interview with Carl Wilson is nearly sleep-inducing. In a good way though.
🤣🤣
I was thinking the same thing. Why are they all whispering? Are they telling secrets? I never saw Van M. So calm, or high, or whatever. He looks good.
Nice , anybody remember early 80's when Mtv had just started , they used to play Van and the Orchestra doing Moondance live with the strings, , any way it was just quality and quantity sheer perfection , i haven't seen that video in ages and would love to see it again...possibly name and date? I know it wasn't the rainbow connection , maybe warner brothers is saving it for something... anyway , cheers
Lol Woolhall..not many will catch it or get it..73..lol.. Love this clip..you're cool man
God I love this man…
"How are you finding British audiences?" He asks for directions to the theater!
Will be spoken about in 200 years
Likely, whispered about
he's quieter than whispering bob!
He mostly let the music do the talking...
Amazing to see this but I just watched another more recent interview where he talks about how difficult it was for him to get his less commercial music released around the Them era and he said he recorded Astral Weeks three times before he managed to get it out but here he says it had very little planning and was recorded in 9 hours!
omg this is amazing
Well, one of the best singer and songwriters that ever lived doesn’t necessarily need to have a silver tongue in interviews too.
What he actually says at the beginning is not 'two or three minutes' but 'two or three months' but it sounds like 'minutes'. If you go to 2.00 he talks about going back to the States a second time 'about four months later' and it sounds like he's saying 'minutes' there as well. It's just his accent and the way he pronounces 'months'.
Van taking them piss by whispering even more then whispering bob lol
Van has that far away eyes look!
His incredible
Van,s actions spoke louder than his words,,, Thanks Woolhall! 💚☘️💚
Totally, btw I have edited my first comment, ( no spell check done before !)
I don't know how the cameraman on the show didn't pass out on the floor from being so relaxed
Hilarious hahaha
... When you’re really stoned, and you come home at 2am, and your mom starts asking you questions in that sharp whispery voice...
Oh yeah!! ha ha
Hahahahaha
Van at his taciturn best.
Exciting stuff
Thanks A!
How does this interview end?
I can’t seem to get beyond 2 minutes without dozing off!
We were all young once but Van Morrison has as I see it a very intense look that tends to leave people questioning his person. Musicians / writers are a bit stand offish it is their talent that brings people to them not the flamboyant vocabulary.
Oh my God. Whispering Bob
Boomers are a chilled generation not like the ‘look at me’ generations down the track.
Van the Man
2023!!!
2024!
Even then, his accent was Americanized.
Well didn't He leave Belfast whe he was 17 for a few years to go to Germany came back for 3 more and then relocated to the US after the success of Gloria? At this point he'd already been in the US for like 10 years and globe trotting for 15. Not surprised he lost his Irish Accent.
He has got the Ulster back now listen to recent interviews. I think he lives in Belfast now.
@@TH-tl6sy If you keep your Belfast accent abroad then nobody will understand'ye. I've lived in Japan 20 years teaching English. Wouldn't have last very long sounding like I'm from Norn Iron!
I can only hear the Belfast accent. However,in those days Van Morrison was living in USA.Now, today most young people speak with an American accent. They don't have to leave the comfort of their own homes. They learn it on their devices. What was your point?
We called this cool back in the day
I was in my mom belly glad to be here 💋👠🎧
I just learned that he's from Ireland. I love the accent!
Like pulling teeth for poor old Bob
Adorable and genius
Have just finished watching this video. It's taken 5 hours cause I kept falling asleep, a bit like reading a book in bed at night, you know when it takes 5 mins to read one line, cause you keep going unconscious, well that sort of thing. Listened for 30 seconds or so and the same phenomenon happened. I'm a Belfast man myself, still love Van the Man nonetheless 🤣
This interview make me Feelike am in a Library
Old Grey Whistle Test
30 tunes recorded for Hard Nose? Where are they???
I used to have a bootleg tape from that era called Mechanical Bliss, which contained a lot of unreleased stuff that still hasn’t seen the light of day.
That accent is shockin. You're from East Belfast ya goose.
That's the way a genius should be, all action no talk.
Action?
@@astragreen I take it you have never seen Van Morrison perform?
Hello??!!
Well, I have never seen much action in his performance. Just his interpretation that day of his songs (like all true artists, he never performed a song the same way twice). He's a classic introvert and not all people of genius are introverted.
@@susanharris5926 Not so sure about that, Dylan isn’t an introvert.
Whispering Bob as you may know Van is a real soul shouter so he may turn up the volume a wee bit 😉!
Tone is like a therapy session. I think they may have smoked weed beforehand.
Great stuff! Always enjoyed Whispering Bob's interviews. Did this interview go out on the Whistle Test or was it kept in the archives? I don't ever recall seeing Van on any OGWT ever. Also good on Van for his stance on the scamdemic. More power to him. His new album's out in May I hear.
I remember this one. See the Keith Richards and Paul Kossoff interviews from the same time.
I couldn't help but notice that Platania and Hayes were hoping for a 30 year career with Van, but he wasn't having it.
Hayes is a god on those live records though.
Dave still plays all the US dates.
I swear to God the interview reminds me of Soul Train and not American Bandstand.... just a low-key interview quite a good- looker back then.... I like the fact that Van was just a strong man with his height just like me and probably you.. Tom Jones and Van Morrison sometimes we cry put it on your repertoire
It's like drawing blood from a turnip.
Lets whisper quietly together in case someone overhears us. 😂
anyone else notice how bizarrely the subtitles are for this? It's pretty crazy how they've mistranslated simple words.
Bob Harris was one of the few people in the history of Rock TV who had the most incongruent personality to be there. I am sure to this day that Molly Meldrum somehow was taking the piss out of him.
Van at an interview : “What’s with all these questions ?”. “How about you answer them.”
