    A nice look to the past to see what this historic circuit looked like back then.

    Nice one.
    This is what 3.2 million bricks look like.
    The track was originally laid down with a top surface layer of crushed stone. But after a first race weekend in which 3 drivers and 2 spectators were killed due to the poor conditions of the course, it was decided to pave the track and since paving technology was in it's infancy, they didn't know what to use but it was determined through testing that bricks could hold up to the stress and had good traction in all conditions, So 3.2 million bricks it was.
    It's name "The Brickyard" was given it by the laborers who hand laid, leveled, and mortered every brick.

    • @BrandonA1
      @BrandonA1 Год назад

      It only became the "Brickyard" in 1961 after all but a single yard of bricks were paved over.

      @@BrandonA1 I have Speed Age magazines from the early 1950s that refer to it as the "brickyard".
      Yes they paved it in '61. Don't see the relevance though with what I wrote

    I know this may be controversial, but can someone please tell me why the Indy 500 is so special. For me it is just going round an oval 200 times and the first one to finish wins. I don’t really get the challenge of it as much as the other triple crown events(Monaco GP, Le Mans 24h)

    • @bijn1848
      @bijn1848 Год назад +6

      I think it's a combination of it being both almost 100% flat-out speed all the way through coupled with the endurance aspect of it going on for 500 miles, but there's also certainly the fact that the speedway is the one of the oldest (and the oldest still standing) permanent race courses on the globe. Certainly in the early days it was a spectacular event of which the likes hadn't ever been seen, and that heritage helped it cement itself in between the two other landmark events of motorsport in the early 20th century.

    • @indygrandmeme8661
      @indygrandmeme8661 Год назад +11

      It’s the perfect combo of the other 2 of the triple crown.
      You have to be perfect like Monaco. You have the endurance aspect like Le Mans. The Extremely interesting and unfortunately Political History of Indycar racing. The Speeds are big too. Topping out at near 250 MPH. The Crowds are like no other. The constant strategy and passing throughout the race. It’s everything you want from Motorsport
      The Track itself. Fast and flat out like a Oval, you drive all corners differently like a Road/Street course

    • @8jof544
      @8jof544 Год назад +3

      Maybe because it was the first 2.5 mile oval in history. And even if other longer ovals were built since, the 500 mile race stays until today.

      1. Monaco-yes very technical-but essentially comes down to qualifying.
      2. Prestige-over 100. Only 4 4 time winners. Monaco and 24LM, if you’re with a good team, nearly a guarantee to AT LEAST get a podium if you finish. Indy guarantees nothing.
      3. Physicality-200 Laps/+-3 hours of 4 G’s in every corner, 220+ mph
      4. Fans-F1 the last couple years boasts *weekend attendance* INSIDE ALONE at IMS is 350,000. Including all the people around the track/parking lots/rvs, over 400,000 town of speedway (sub of Indianapolis) is under 15,000.
      5. Not to mention,Indy was originally the testing/proving grounds for car manufacturers. Kind of like how F1 now is the pinnacle of technology and current leader in auto technology and things related, Indy was essentially that, but for a century ago when the auto market and auto racing was booming (racing soon to boom).
      I could go on and on. Im free Indy and its the best day of the year. Its a celebration for the entire state. (Yes i know Monaco is a country haha)

      I'm most into F1, or was anyway, but I think the Triple Crown covers three different qualities of challenge. There's elements of these traits in all of them, but I'd say that other than yourself, for Monaco your biggest adversary is the circuit, at Le Mans it's your own car, and at Indy it's the 32-ish other cars in close proximity.
