The best sports film of the last decades , and the best thing is that the director points out the sportsmanship of lauda hunt and their friendship- rivarly
I've never seen anyone so deep into a character as Daniel Brühl. He not only nailed the english dubbed version, but also the german one. He became Lauda, his every move and facial expression was Niki. Of course no one in Hollywood has taken notice of him for it.
I think this line is the reveal of the whole movie. Niki wanted nothing from anyone, a tough guy, extremely confident and rightly so, that would never ever admit he wants something, or that he is not able to have something like Hunt's free spirit. Him finally admitted he envied Hunt is super powerful imo. A moment where he opens up.
Of course he didn't listen to me. For James, one world title was enough. He had proved what he needed to prove. To himself and anyone who doubted him. And two years later, he retired. When I saw him next in London, seven years later, me as a champion again, him as broadcaster, he was barefoot on a bicycle with a flat tire, still living each day like his last. When I heard he died age 45 of a heart attack, I wasn't surprised. I was just sad. People always think of us as rivals but he was among the very few I liked and even fewer that I respected. He remains the only person I envied. What a beautiful ending.... :'(

I was a Fast and Furious fan actually :P but however, I actually enjoyed it and loved it(hell... Reza Atabaki Yeah, that's how a remarkably average movie like "Argo" won the Best Movie oscar last year despite rewriting history of what really happened in that hostage crisis back in 1979. In reality the Canadians did pretty much all the work to get the hostages out, and the portrayal of the revolution in Iran in 1979 was also almost non-existent and biased. Not to mention that Ben Affleck is a horrible actor and makes any movie he appears in pretty much unwatchable. Out of the 9 movies nominated for *this* year's Oscars, "Rush" is easily better than 5 of them. That it didn't even get a nomination is unbelievable. At least all the critics loved it. 93% on Rottentomatoes (critical aggragate score) as did the audience that saw the movie in the theaters. #129 in the Imdb Top250 isn't too shabby either for a "small movie".
Hands down, this is absolutely the best film in 2013. Even if you are not a F1 lover you have to see it. I saw this film at last weekend, and now i realized i watched some part of the film more then 5th time already... Amazing acting...Wonderful music... totally brilliant film.
i'm not a true fan of formula one but after watching this film, i started to like it a bit more , all of this because of these two actors, my favourite is bruhl, he plays lauda perfectly, and then hemsworth is brilliant too . this speech is just amazing, it is one of the best speeches i've ever heard, because of the way lauda talks to james hunt, they're rivals of course but after seeing them talking i could also see them as friends .
niki lauda is an example for me, a brilliant man, strong-minded and also very intelligent. he is one of the best. many say senna is the true F1 racer, but lauda is very good too, not only in this film
maria silva Rodrigues, Nikki Lauda and James Hunt were very good friends off the racing track. It was just artistic license being used to potray them as rivals. They infact stayed together in the same room one point in time
I was watching F1 way back then, todays drivers are phenomenally skilled but back then they were gladiators, the risk of death was very real. As a fan you cheered for teams not drivers because the drivers would die.
as a fan of film.. i always say, the best films are the ones with characters you become invested in... you feel like you know them when it is over... this film is like that... the character arc of lauda was excellent, and this is a very good film
"He was among the very few I liked...and even fewer I respected." -Niki Lauda on James Hunt What a great film. Too many people missed-out on this movie.
Everytime I look at Rush ending with the 312T2 and the M23 side to side towards the camera I have to fight back the tears. And I lose everytime........
this was clearly one of the best movies in recent years ... even thou i wasnt even born back when lauda and hunt were champs, i cant help but get a huge nostalgic feelin watchin this movie. it makes me somehow realize times were better back in the day.. today, there are hardly any personalities left .. be it sports, movies, music
This is the true relationship between those two tough guys, they were close friends most, not like they portrayed during 90% of the movies time. Still, this was a surprisingly an awesome movie in every way.
" stop thinking of it as a curse to have been given an enemy in life, the wise man gets more from his enemies than a fool from his friends" wow, i will remember that for life :p
James Hunt: I'll see you on race day, champ. Niki Lauda: You will, champ. Respect between drivers, I am glad they put this lines in movie, even if they never said it in real interactions, it just fits perfectly.
This scene makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, I will always remember my mum crying when James died all she said was "it's such a shame, I always liked James Hunt" then I gave her a hug and they was it..
How sweet would it be to start the sequel to this movie like this: The track is Monaco, the year is 1984. Absolutely pouring rain. Lauda is stepping on the gas pedals and chasing the small French phenom Prost. In his mind be replays his past races, his crash, and his race with Hunt in the shadow of mount Fuji. It was raining hard that day too. On that day Hunt won the championship. from him Lauda recalls his wife's face. He sees her relieved smile as they rode off in the chopper. He knows this time, he will NOT back out. He knows this, and he knows his old rival is watching him in the broadcast booth. He breathes a long breath as he hits a turn, barely missing the steel rails. He clinches the wheel. The rain falls harder. Lauda no longer sees anything in front of him. It is as if he is driving amidst a fog. Suddenly he hears a faint noise in his rear. He turns to look, just in time to glimpse two blurred images pass his car One was the word "Toleman". The other, he could not be sure...But it looked like a yellow helmet. Camera shifts to the cockpit of the Toleman car. It focuses on the gloves of the driver, as he moves the stick up a gear, then another, then another. We see the steering wheel dance, as if controlled by God. "Lost and Won" starts playing, and we see the car move, turn after turn, literally hugging the rails. Suddenly, the camera shifts to the driver's feet. It floors the gas pedal. Sparks fly from the car. Then darkness. RUSH 2
Vipera01 everyone is talking about a rush 2 to be a senna-prost movie.but for me,if they made a new f1 movie,i would love to see it being about the brothers rodriguez (2 mexican brothers, both died racing) or the rivalry between fangio and stirling moss.
Nah... RUSH's natural sequel would be about the years after 1977... Villeneuve: Zandvoort and Dijon 1979, Monaco 1981, the rivalry with Pironi and how it turned Gilles into a myth...
Rip both legends . Rest in piece Nikki, what a legendary career. Your strong , stable and hard working character had an influence in lots of people. You maybe left us and watch us from above but we all have you in our heart. Goodbye Nikki
This movie really surprised me :) The most of the racing films are typical: it ends with the protagonist holds the trophy and over. The End. That was different. But in the good way. I think it wasn't about winning or loosing. It was about that rivals can be friends and they can respect each other too. But it has several other messages too :)
RUSH is different because it's not a movie, but the tale of a TRUE STORY, first of all... And Life and History do NOT follow clichés: they're the most bastard screenwriters and they don't give a fuck about anything or anyone. They don't give you what you're expecting, they just punch you in the face. And very few people manage to stay still. Life is your one and only rival, the one who truly challenges you, and if you manage to win THOSE challenges, you're definitely the winner, no matter that Life assigns you scars as a trophy, instead of a cup. That's the main message, IMO, of Lauda's life, first of all, and only secondly of the movie telling it.
No, it was NOT possible to end a movie about 1976 season with just a "trophy holding". There were two trophies that season: Hunt's cup and Lauda's scars. There were two battles: for the World Champion title and for life. Which would a "trophy holding scene" eventually have been about? The whole movie is not the tale of a championship, but the confrontation between two opposite ways of seeing life: the one who gives himself just one aim, fights for it by any mean and once he got it, no matter how, he feels everything is over; and the other who's never satisfied, always looks for other aims in life again and again and doesn't let ANYTHING, even Death himself, get him down. I think THIS, not strictly racing, is the heart of Lauda/Hunt rivalry as it's portrayed in this movie: on this assumption, a trophy-holding ending wouldn't make sense; a scene like this fits it perfectly, instead, as it openly describes the two opposites points of view and gives you food for thought once the last score starts to play...
Not only should Bruhl have been nominated for the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, but he should have been the front-runner. Outstanding performance. Lauda himself believes Bruhl perfectly portrayed himself.
Well, Lauda is the kinda man who both insults you to death and praises you to heaven if he thinks you deserve it. He's probably the most arrogant person on Earth (you gotta really believe to be God to tell the priest to go fuck off while he's giving you the last rites), but he's also able to recognize someone else's qualities after having seen them, as he did with Brühl. He seldom gives wrong opinions. And when he thinks he's right, he has no problem in saying "I'm a genius and you're a dickhead" and when he thinks he was wrong he has no problem in saying "I'm a dickhead and you're a genius". And this all explains why he's such a harsh judge and a dangerous competitor.
The name of this song: “Lost but won” . A small phrase that could be applied for both of them. Niki lost the championship, but felt that he won because “the risks were totally unacceptable, for me that is losing” as he said. James lost “medals, and planes” but felt that he won because he would have time for enjoy himself. Both champs, both winners! R.I.P James R.I.P Niki 🙏🏻
One thing that amazed me was Daniel Brühl looks exactly the same like the real Lauda back in 1976 even his voice is nearly exact the same. This movie is one of my favourite and it will always be.
Great movie great performances by Daniel Bruhl and not even a nomination for an Oscar which is typical of the Oscars. A truly brilliant performance that has stayed with me since I saw this great movie
Over then years time, we still see this movie, Oscar or no Oscar; this is about the best: Formula One, and two of its greatest competitors AND both world champions.
I don't know whether to give him more credit, I thought maybe he just had the advantage of looking the part. I see Chris having James' smile at 2:18 in interviews all the time, and their voices are almost identical. He really was meant for the role.
The film definitely deserved Oscars, Chris Hemsworth for supporting and the actor for lead sorry forget his name and Ron Howard for director and best picture. If you watch videos of James Hunt doing his broadcasting gig he sounds like Chris Hemsworth or it's the other way around.
Daniel Brühl Sold this film for me. I'd never heard of Niki Lauda before but Brühl brought him to life in this film. It was only after watching it that I researched the real people. Hemsworth was brilliant as were all the actors really. Olivia Wilde was fantastic with her classy portrayal of Suzy. Such a refreshingly good film over all
JCD UK Well, a few scenes were a little cheesy for such a normal conversation. Camera angles could've been done better. The overall screen time was a little too short for me. If I had to rate, it would be a 7.8/10. It's still a good movie. Just could've done better.
This is the first movie I have ever watch, that I dont know who to root for, They both literally have valid reason/excuse for what they do.... there is no favorite villain, no memorable heroes in this movie. Just two very different people with the same goal, and both did nothing wrong, if there is 1 lesson I take from this movie is... live your own way of life, dont follow others foot step, there is no wrong way to live your life, you made your own choice -- sry if the english not right, english is not my native language.
Remember, it's History, not fiction... In real life you very seldom find heroes and villains: we're just... People. Everyone of us has his own Life, made of goals and obstacles, victories and defeats, friends and foes and everyone does it his way, no matter who's right or wrong... But sometimes people are born who really are of a breed of their own; and when Life hits one of them, the harder they're hit the greater they become: and they actually do such memorable things that no fictional hero could ever be at their level.
they where both good, but Daniel was the highlight for me. He has such good morals and says so many profound things in this film. He also had the most to endure, with the crash and all the pain he suffered. Nikki is one of my living heros!
greatest movie I have ever seen on this generation.... it's just proven that even Motorsports are the cruelest place to live after war... and it's just make Fast & Furious, Need for Speed movie, and Street Society looked like Transformers
Just a great film. So glad that Ron Howard is a fan of Formula One and decided to direct it. Like Niki Lauda said: "The film was about 80% right". And, Daniel Bruhl was great...I can't imagine anyone else in the role of Lauda. R.I.P. Andreas Nikolaus "Niki" Lauda...2-22-1949 to 5-20-2019.

Yeah, that's how a remarkably average movie like "Argo" won the Best Movie oscar last year despite rewriting history of what really happened in that hostage crisis back in 1979.
Since when Academy awards is for art? It died for me when they snubbed Avatar for the best picture.
Reza Atabaki Avatar wasn't snubbed.
McLarenMercedes I actually agreed with Argo winning last year though. But that's just my opinion.
They infact stayed together in the same room one point in time
They were actually very good friends :)
+Inuyasha blahblah I heard the rivalry is there though
I was watching F1 way back then, todays drivers are phenomenally skilled but back then they were gladiators, the risk of death was very real. As a fan you cheered for teams not drivers because the drivers would die.
Ron Howard and the cast have made this a gem of racing movies. An amazing portayal.
This brilliant movie got SNUBBED! How could it not even get nominated for Oscars? It was practically perfect!
Bruhl was ideal for being Lauda, A incredible F1 living legend!
Wunderbar Daniel!
Rewatching this right now, remembering what a great man he was. An eternal rivalry, now in the clouds...
as a fan of film.. i always say, the best films are the ones with characters you become invested in... you feel like you know them when it is over... this film is like that... the character arc of lauda was excellent, and this is a very good film
One of the best films ever . This ending always makes me feel sad tho
I literally cried during this scene. Such a beautiful scene.
this film deserves an oscar for best picture. daniel bruhl(nikki lauda) deservers the oscar for best supporting actor !
One of the most powerful final scenes of any movie I've seen
"He was among the very few I liked...and even fewer I respected." -Niki Lauda on James Hunt
What a great film. Too many people missed-out on this movie.
Greatful I got to see it in the theater.
Everytime I look at Rush ending with the 312T2 and the M23 side to side towards the camera I have to fight back the tears. And I lose everytime........
and add to that the master piece of Hanz Zimmer background music........it's just perfect
+Cesar Parra exactly! Ciao
Stiffjab71
James: I'll see you on race day champ........
Niki: you will.........champ......
Two Giants......
+Stiffjab71 Actually that's James Hunt's McLaren M23 at the end.
So do I... And even more as the real Lauda and Hunt appear on the screen in original footage.
one of the best movies in the past few years
Just watching the intro and outro monologue gives me shivers.
Best voice, best writing and definitely best music!
Hunt and Lauda has shared emotions mankind has no name for.
this was clearly one of the best movies in recent years ... even thou i wasnt even born back when lauda and hunt were champs, i cant help but get a huge nostalgic feelin watchin this movie. it makes me somehow realize times were better back in the day.. today, there are hardly any personalities left .. be it sports, movies, music
Oh Daniel Brühl! So brilliant. One more "Supposed to be an Oscar nomination-Performance"!
This is the true relationship between those two tough guys, they were close friends most, not like they portrayed during 90% of the movies time.
Still, this was a surprisingly an awesome movie in every way.
and that's why SAO and Clannad is nothing compared to this in every way...
Rest in peace...Mr. Lauda and Mr. Hunt. You are both champions of the world.
Amen.
I have seen this film 8 times. Now I want to see it again... Where's my dvd ?
Rest in peace both of you. Hope you can meet each other somehow.
This movie is awesome and criminally underrated.
This movie, and specifically the ending, reminds me that, Legends are not made only because you won.... sometimes, its because you chose to loose...
The end of this movie gives me the chills... EVERY SINGLE TIME !!!
Baron Zemo fucking with Thor long before Civil War.
Thor wasn't in Civil War
Cause he already fucked him up and bugger died of a heart attack before Civil War. LOL
Kenny Tee 😂😂😂
This scene makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, I will always remember my mum crying when James died all she said was "it's such a shame, I always liked James Hunt" then I gave her a hug and they was it..
How sweet would it be to start the sequel to this movie like this:
The track is Monaco, the year is 1984.
RUSH 2
Wow, you should be a screen writer! Brilliant :)
Yes... that could be about the rivalry of Senna and Prost.
0809AriAri That story is far less heard of though.
Rip both legends . Rest in piece Nikki, what a legendary career. Your strong , stable and hard working character had an influence in lots of people. You maybe left us and watch us from above but we all have you in our heart. Goodbye Nikki
This movie really surprised me :)
The most of the racing films are typical: it ends with the protagonist holds the trophy and over.
0809AriAri
I know its true story, but it was possible that the ending would be that "trophy holding" cliché. But it was not.
I think THIS, not strictly racing, is the heart of Lauda/Hunt rivalry as it's portrayed in this movie: on this assumption, a trophy-holding ending wouldn't make sense; a scene like this fits it perfectly, instead, as it openly describes the two opposites points of view and gives you food for thought once the last score starts to play...
same here mah nigga...
Not only should Bruhl have been nominated for the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, but he should have been the front-runner.
Outstanding performance. Lauda himself believes Bruhl perfectly portrayed himself.
And such a judgement is much more than an Oscar, isn't it?
I think he was very humbled by how well the man himself received him, so yes. Interesting take on it!

R.I.P James
R.I.P Niki
🙏🏻
I liked the part in the movie when in the grid of the japanese grand prix that Lauda and Hunt waved at each other as a sign of respect :)
Rip Niki😢
You will always be in our hearts
Found this scene incredibly moving. Brought a tear to my eye the first time I saw it.
One of my favorite end scene in cinema ! And one of my favorite movie !
This movie is awesome but the sound of the engines at the final of the ending scene... is EPIC!
Emotions are strong with this one.
Rest in peace, old friend. The ending hurts even more now. Both are gone.
"More powerful than the fear of death is the will to WIN." Now THAT'S a quote!
This moment, for me, is history. I love this film.
man, the last few seconds, the sound of the machines and the music go so well together
Over then years time, we still see this movie, Oscar or no Oscar; this is about the best: Formula One, and two of its greatest competitors AND both world champions.
The final few seconds, when the two car are approaching the camera, that music... Perfect!
RIP to the greatest ever F1 driver... Now this film will mean even more the next time I watch it. Absolute legend!
Rest in peace Legend. Thank you for everything champ.
The best film I've seen for a long time. Especially this ending scene!
The biggest surprise was Chris Hemsworth..
***** No, just no
Daniel Brühl Sold this film for me.
Baniel bruhl is absolute perfection!
That last shot of the cars charging at the camera.
EPIC.
Awesome job Ron Howard.
they where both good, but Daniel was the highlight for me. He has such good morals and says so many profound things in this film. He also had the most to endure, with the crash and all the pain he suffered. Nikki is one of my living heros!
What an epic final scene. Just EPIC!.
Thank you for sharing.
Gotta get this movie. NOW.
RIP Hunt and Lauda. may their legacies live on.
A bond of mixed emotions.. It wasn't hatred it wasn't friendship... They were rivals who respected each other... Gud movie aftr al
At par with the Dark Knight in terms of ending.
give that movie oscar please :)
greatest movie I have ever seen on this generation.... it's just proven that even Motorsports are the cruelest place to live after war... and it's just make Fast & Furious, Need for Speed movie, and Street Society looked like Transformers
Rest in peace Lauda. I imagine he's driving alongside Hunt once more now.
The best of rivals, soon have respect for each other, and they eventually become friends
That’s a pretty cool thing.
The way this scene ends, with the 312T and the M23 riding along into the sunset... i can't. This movie brings a tear to my eye every time.
Hunt the only one, and lauda the genious.
