I don't know about that, I've all but forgotten every love I've ever had. I can't even remember the sound of their voice or the touch of their hand. Even to see a breif image of their face takes immense effort, and some are lost altogether to the sands of time. Really, my entire life is mostly one cavernous void that has left me feeling just as empty.

used to read and study this poem in our college days. it was nothing to me before. yes, it was touching. but didn't really reach my heart. last night, i remembered the lines "love is so short, forgetting is so long". i watched this today and now that i'm older, and been through a lot, i could almost hear my heart break with these lines.

    I have always appreciated the poems of Pablo Neruda. He has always had a matter of fact and simplistic approach to his works. For example;
“Someday, somewhere - anywhere, unfailingly, you'll find yourself, and that, and only that, can be the happiest or bitterest hour of your life.”
    This video was beautifuly made!

I had a Spanish teacher whose wife and children were murdered by the government of Chile for the crime of publishing poetry of Pablo Neruda, a socialist.
He survived to remarry. To have more children.
Tonight I can write the saddest lines.

John Hoff he was a socialist?

    • @petele345
      @petele345 5 лет назад +21

@@maniimanii1766 The teacher? I don't know, but you could probably say Neruda was a socialist. Like many intellectuals in his time, his views were left leaning and anti-fascist. Neruda was once a member of Chile's Communist Party and was elected and served as senator. But then, when Chile's president at that time turned repressive and started persecuting communists, he had to go into exile for a few years. Back in his country, he later became a supporter of Chile's first elected Socialist president, Salvador Allende. Neruda died only days after a very violent, U.S. supported military coup brought about Allende's death and ended Chile's democracy. I am guessing he would have been a Socialist today.

Tonight I can write the saddest lines.
Write, for example,'The night is shattered
and the blue stars shiver in the distance.'
The night wind revolves in the sky and sings.
Tonight I can write the saddest lines.
I loved her, and sometimes she loved me too.
Through nights like this one I held her in my arms
I kissed her again and again under the endless sky.
She loved me sometimes, and I loved her too.
How could one not have loved her great still eyes.
Tonight I can write the saddest lines.
To think that I do not have her. To feel that I have lost her.
To hear the immense night, still more immense without her.
And the verse falls to the soul like dew to the pasture.
What does it matter that my love could not keep her.
The night is shattered and she is not with me.
This is all. In the distance someone is singing. In the distance.
My soul is not satisfied that it has lost her.
My sight searches for her as though to go to her.
My heart looks for her, and she is not with me.
The same night whitening the same trees.
We, of that time, are no longer the same.
I no longer love her, that's certain, but how I loved her.
My voice tried to find the wind to touch her hearing.
Another's. She will be another's. Like my kisses before.
Her voide. Her bright body. Her inifinite eyes.
I no longer love her, that's certain, but maybe I love her.
Love is so short, forgetting is so long.
Because through nights like this one I held her in my arms
my sould is not satisfied that it has lost her.
Though this be the last pain that she makes me suffer
and these the last verses that I write for her.
