Good review, but your point on the digital zoom is not correct. Compression is not a result of focal length, but distance from your subject. If you take a photo with a 50mm lens and another with a 28mm cropped until your frame or subject matches the size of your 50, then you will have the same amount of compression. This is also the reason why the framelines on an optical viewfinder (m-rangefinders, xpro) will change sizes if you switch lenses. Knowing this principle, you can use the Q2 as 35/50mm camera with "out of frame visibility".

The Q line of cameras are phenomenal. I'm rocking my Q2 Monochrom and I had the Q1. I'll probably pick up a Q3 when it comes out or if its not much of an upgrade grab a Q2 (color). Its hard to quantify why its worth the money to people who have never owned a Leica before, but the files do have a look to them that I prefer and the feel of the camera is unreal. It makes you want to use it

I’ve had my Q2 for well over a year now and am still in love with it. But you are spot on as regards the AWB…. It is very odd…. Grey card and fixed WB do work fine and as my files are RAW I can always adjust if needed.

Great video Mike. I have the same thoughts and opinion about my Q2 monochrome. And your thought about the Leica look I think you are on the right track. That's also my thought and if you look at vintage lenses the falloff of the bokeh shooting wide open is mostly the thing people interpret as charataristic compared to modern lenses from Sony, Canon which are called clincal.
I also talked to a Leica employee and he had the chance to talk to the engineers in Wetzlar. And their highest priority regarding lens optic design is to have the best image quality shooting wide open. Usually a lens performs better when stopping down the aperture.
Not sure if that's the case, since I'm not in a position to test our 10k€ Leica lenses, but I found that philosophy quite interesting :)

It’s a awesome camera! I’d buy one just for the build quality and engineering if I had spare few grand . Most high end products are not really worth the money they are but if you like it and can afford it then buy it. Many years ago, a pro photographer told me they always set the white balance to cloudy, unless you are shooting indoors under tungsten lighting. For those that remember film, you didn't have the option to change white balance to suit different shooting environments, typically you would just buy a daylight balanced film and that was it.
If your set to cloudy and the sun comes out, that would produce a warmer looking image, but is that a bad thing? the same would have happened in film days, but now in the digital era, if you're shooting raw, you can change it in Lightroom anyway.

Bit late to this, but great video. Just got a Q2 finally and absolutely love it. I put the 35mm zoom frame up but only shoot raw so I’m using them as frame lines for my shot like you would frame lines on an M body. Hope that makes sense. I like the framing of the lines but am happy to know I can shoot outside the frame lines cause the raw file will show the full frame of the original shot.

What other camera + lenses might you consider getting? What types of subjects might you shoot?
I have a wide range of cameras (Canon & Nikon DSLRs, and 5 Leicas: M6 TTL film, the digital CL, SL2, M11, & Q2 Monochrom). All the Leicas are robust, excellent, and simple, but the Q2 Monochrom is the camera I tend to gravitate to. It feels like an old school camera (which I like) and the image quality is superb. It’s reasonably compact. If I didn’t have the other digital cameras, I’d get a Leica Q2.
I thought the Q2’s fixed 28 mm lens would be severely limiting, but it can be liberating because you don’t need to think about which lens to mount on the camera. You just go and shoot with what works with that camera. The Macro feature is actually quite useful, but stopping down helps obtain a useful depth of field in that case.
Another option might be the tiny 24 MP Leica CL. It is quite a bit smaller than the Q2 (the Q2 isn’t huge) and has removable L mount lenses. The CL system has recently been discontinued, so it and the Leica TL lenses can be found at much more reasonable prices (I was able to buy all 6 Leica TL lenses, most at much less than the new list price). The Leica TL 18 mm f/2.8 lens (acts like a 28 mm due to the APS-C sensor crop factor) is a tiny but an excellent lens (the CL + TL 18 f/2.8 can be brought anywhere). Sigma’s I DG DN contemporary L mount lenses work on the CL too and are quite inexpensive. I recommend getting the Leica CL handgrip and a spare battery or two if you walk around all day with a camera. The TL 35 mm f/1.4 is sharp (acts like a 50) and the Macro TL 60 mm f/2.8 is an excellent “90” telephoto and Macro lens (at closest focus, imaging a 35 mm negative completely fills the CL sensor with the TL 60). The CL is clean (just enough buttons on it to work well and not hard to memorize) and like all modern Leica digital cameras, the menu system is simple and easy to navigate.

I bought a second hand Q as a back-up camera and to have the possibility, to shoot video ad hoc plus to have the macro feature too. I've tried many times to make it my EDC, but I'm so used to my M-P240 or M240, so they do the daily job. Is the Summilux a 28 mm or a 24 mm. It's a 28 mm for sure, because I can compare with my Elmar M 3.8/24, which is wider. My personal tip for an M: consider the M-P240 over the M10 or even the M11. I never leave home without my M-P240. Great content as always! Regarding the "Leica Look", when shooting in raw, how do you edit the files to keep the "Leica colors"? After tweaking the exposure/balance, do you simply add some saturation/vibrance back in and the color science does the rest, or do you have to do something else with the color mix? I'm just curious as to the "Leica Look" or "Leica Color Science" everyone is talking about regarding the deep colors and contrast, etc... or is this something more noticeable SOOC when shooting jpegs? I'm also curious as to why my Lightroom app doesn't have a camera/color matching for the Q2 (I think my lightroom only has Adobe RBG available when I import Leica raw files) - What do you use to best match/calibrate the Leica raw files and photo editing app? Any tips on editing these raw files? Thanks!

Mike, thanks for the video. My Q2 is a Monochrom version, so AWB isn’t an issue (I _love_that camera, reminds me of my old-school film cameras)? I’ll more carefully check for AWB issues with my color Leica cameras (CL, SL2, and M11).
I don’t have an issue with the Q2’s “crop” lines (I rarely use them). They of course can’t make the Summilux 28 look like longer lenses. The frame lines are there to provide what those fields of view look like to aid framing the subject and because the 47 MP sensor allows significant cropping without much loss of image quality.
I recently picked up a used M6 TTL (I have a decent collection of M lenses) and only ran 1 roll of film through it so far to test the camera (I’ll pick up the processed roll next week). It was an interesting experience shooting film vs. digital again, because each shot really counts. I still have Nikon film SLRs and a lot of decent Nikon glass, but those will stay on the shelf because the the M6 TTL and M lenses are compact. I’m going to pick up a spot light meter for times I can slow down even more and be assured the exposure is optimal.
Honestly, if you love rangefinder cameras, give the M11 serious consideration. It’s fun to use, robust, better battery life than that on the Q2 (which isn’t that bad, and better than that of M10 cameras), a simple menu system, and has an excellent sensor. The downside is that it’s pricey. I’ll be testing the APO Lanthar Voigtländer VM lenses on the M11 soon. The equivalent Leica lenses are excellent, but pricey.

“You are getting a free camera attached to the Summilux lens”. I hear that a lot, but this is false. The 28mm 1.4 Lux for M mount is a completely different lens. It also on a different league. While the Q lens is more like 24mm that the camera crops to 28mm in order to hide the excessive barrel distortion and vignetting, the M lens is a true, optically corrected 28mm with barely any visible distortion.
The Q lens is probably made by Panasonic, as is most of the camera.

The argument is the same for them calling it a 28mm lens. It’s actually just cropped to 28mm but it’s actual feel of the photo is 24mm (compression and subject isolation is that of a 24mm lens not a 28mm lens)

I have a Sony A7III with 24mm lens and the field of view of the 28mm Leica Q2 looks identical to me. Cropping with the camera or in post processing give identical results and if one is in doubt it is best to shoot both Raw and JPEG, because only the JPEG is cropped to the user’s choice in-camera.
I have no problem with the black bar or indeed with the white balance. Maybe later firmware has sorted this out. Version 5.0 has just been offered and gives several more significant updates to operation and performance.
The question I ask myself is whether the Q2 is actually ‘better’ than the Sony A7III or A7IV? In most rational ways it is not but it is a highly satisfying camera to use.
You get about 1000 exposure on a 128GB card when shooting JPEG and Raw simultaneously. More is shooting Raw only and massively more shooting JPEG only.

I dropped mine which dented the lens hood and put a glitch in the EVF, but it doesn’t appear in the photos. I tend to keep the crop lines at the 35mm setting and shoot it like a 35mm. It feels more like range-finder then because I can move my composition around and really control the edges. I never use the AF on it - compared to standard cameras (Sony A7iii) the AF sucks. It'll work but this camera wants to be driven (and focused) like a manual. You can adjust the color balance on the screen to match the eyepiece easily. Agree AWB is also "meh" -- again back to that principle about driving the camera yourself. Ditto on ISO -- this thing recovers darks like crazy but blows out highlights if you aren't careful.
been renting for a few weeks -- don't think I'll keep it yet. But it is an incredible camera. No doubt about that. And it's a pleasure to shoot on. The way it wants to be used makes for... just a different shooting experience than I've had on my other cameras (Nikons, Sony, Canon full frames). It's less comfortable to hold, it is slower to focus, the AWB is not trustworthy... why the eff do I like shooting on this thing? I shoot in manual, I choose my white balance, and... I really only pull up the camera when I have an intention. I'm slower and my photo count is lower -- but the photos I take are better.
Leica magic is real -- I'm not sure what they do with the lenses and sensor but the files straight out of camera are drippingly beautiful. There is just more... depth and contrast falloff in the details as you move out of the focus plane maybe? I'm not sure. But it really draws attention to what you're focusing on in a way I haven't seen out of any other camera or on any other photo without a real artist behind the post processing.
I think whatever their secret sensor-lens sauce is + a design that guides you to be intentional = leica magic. I'll be spending the next couple weeks carrying around my A7 and trying to shoot it like I did the Leica.
If it was 3K, would be a no brainer of a camera. For 5+, you really have to love it and accept what it is. A leica that is supposed to be controlled on nearly full manual and shot slowly. I can see why people love it. There is something subtle and just good about it.

But I still don’t find the so called Leica magic… as soon as you edit your raw/DNG files, I don’t see there are much difference in the outputs… and talking about deep black, even the GRIII can produce it in camera with its highlight weighted exposure. Can you describe what magic do you see comparing to other full frame cameras or even the APCs after editing?

I think the a Leica look is Higher Contrast aesthetic with more orange yellows and Maroon Reds, a little more saturated than usual but not as much as Fujifilm, then the Micro Contrast of the Lens + a warmer white balance than base. You can change most of them in post processing of course, but the lens character is signature Leica. They forgo optical perfection for it.

I own the X100V and it has a lot of special elements to it like the size of the 35F2, which is a big improvement over the last model. And the neutral density filter’s and leaf shutter make it an outstanding camera.
I mostly shoot on my XT4 anyway, so after doing street photography for some six years now, a 28 mm is something a lot of photographers struggle with, as you’re just too close to your subjects, making you and your subject uncomfortable! I prefer to have an option to switch out lenses, and prefer the 33mmF1.4 APC over the 28mm. I find you just have to get up on people way too much to get the kind of images I like.
So I usually shoot 33 mm (50mm equivalent) as I don’t have to get up on people quite as much. I’ll even go further into the direction of 50 mm (75 mm equivalent) then go wider. I only use my 18 mm 1.4. For certain wide shots where I am willing to risk people & myself being uncomfortable.
But for the most part, I prefer that myself and the subject doesn’t feel pressed upon by getting in their face.
I have no doubt the Leica Q2 is a fine camera, just not fitting in my budget or my reasons for my kind of street photography, not to mention other forms of photography, like nature and architecture. 🖖

You would be hard pressed to find a difference between a cropped 28mm and a real 35mm . except that the real 35mm would have more vignetting at the corners. its just 1.2x factor. And if you use a Leica M camera - you will appreciate the framelines that show up in crop mode. Having that space around allows you to shoot the Q as a Rangefinder camera. YOu can see subjects walk into the frame for better anticipation. And when you go to Lightroom - the default i that cropped image - you can just uncrop it to see the full 28mm. There's a difference compared to just saying when you go Lightroom its still the full image. One can essentially treat the Q2 as a Fullframe 35mm F2.0 lens (in depth of field) .

Obviously people can use what they want but the cost of this camera system in comparison to others is not reflected in the quality vs others. Between three to four more times more expensive than an x100v?? No way is it THAT much better. I find Leica cameras ridiculously overpriced for what they are. Your images for example look no different to stuff I'm seeing people put out on old fujifilm systems such as an xt2 or xt3. The difference is always what you enjoy using so if that is this system for you then it probably is worth the money however I owned a Q2 for just over a year and once the excitement died down of owning a Leica camera I realised actually that it wasn't as great as I thought from a general photography point of view and any other photographer worth their salt really didn't give a s*** that I had that red dot on my camera, they just want to see your work and that's what I feel Leica have become now for many, a bit of a posers system when in fact most camera systems will do the same or better for a hell of a lot less money. I had the same issues with AWB and for a £5k camera that's just ridiculous.
