Anyways, here's to the first of a new series! Videos like this one should be popping up in between each animated videos from now on - and no, they won't take a month, they should take roughly a week from here on out. The most important element of the Russian soldier's equipment is a blue - and-white striped t-shirt(telnyashka)
This gives psy power like the orcs of Warhammer: 40K
Therefore, it does not matter what equipment the soldier, the main thing that it was this t-shirt

since 2008, the Russian military uniform has been actively modernized
at the time of 2012, almost the entire uniform was replaced by a new one
I served in the Russian army in 2015-2016, in the rear and even there were a lot of new uniforms, including: digital camouflage, new aramid helmets, ballistic glasses, tactical lights, new load-bearing vests and new body armor, as well as a very good winter uniform
given the difficult economic situation and the fact that Russia is still recovering from the crisis of the 90s, I think this modernization was quite good for such a huge army)
Why do the russian military uses that horizontal white and blue striped t-shitrt?
Sounds neat. I like it that you're recovering slow but sure. Recovering pretty fast is really suspicious... It could be at the same level as selling your country
ARX 351 it called telnyashka
originally it was worn in the Navy, and then it became a tradition in other troops there are not only blue stripes, but also maroon, light blue, green, black and orange, depending on the type of troops
this probably does not have a specific function, it's just one of the distinctive attributes of elite troops
in ordinary troops wear t-shirts in summer and warm underwear in winter, they differ only in the absence of stripes
Nice
+Nicholas Mcfeters the last thing any nation, no matter the situation, resorts to is selling the assets of the military. It's not just about giving up the overall power or the weaponry. It's about giving up the tech. As for "now they are just scrap" - many new ships have already been built, and even the older ones, judging from the boat tour around the Sevastopol bay I had, are in a pretty good shape.
The thing i like about soviet gear/weapons/vehicles. MILLIONS OF REPLACEMENT PARTS and it doesnt brake easy.
And regardless you can always strip a vehicle that isn't the same type as the one needing repair for spare parts.
That is because the manufacturer does not want you to come back
Why do you like it if it can't brake

To be fair, the old US spaghetti load bearing rig from Vietnam was still in use when I joined the US ARMY in 2003. Now, the interesting part is how much the new version of the LBV looks and works like a copy of the USSR carrier rig. Also, the adoption of wheeled vehicles (such as the Stryker and MRAP) by the US was a total change in doctrine when compared to the previous "tracked" APC/IFV policy. Its funny how the US ARMY refers to Eastern BTR/BRDM-equipped forces as motorized, but insisted on classifying their own equivalents as mechanized. It is evident to me that some lessons were learned by the west from the success of Soviet-style motorized formations in unconventional or low-intensity conflict.
It's interesting indeed. NATO used a lot of trucks as common transport and for logistics throughout most of the Cold War. APCs were reserved as a less common "luxury" (for lack of a better term) transport for mechanized troops. Meanwhile the USSR outfitted its most common and basic unit, Motor Rifles, with APCs of the BTR series. IFVs were their "luxury" transport. Hell, the USSR invented the IFV. BMP-1 was the world's first infantry fighting vehicle. Even the logistical units of the Soviet Military were armored APCs. The definition of mechanized and motorized as well as the use of APCs and IFVs varied within the Warsaw Pact and NATO greatly.
They call the Eastern forces motorized because that is what the Russians call them. They're called Motor Rifle Divisions, despite the fact they have BTR/BRDMs and an attached tank regiment. They actually struggled in most types of nonconventional combat, such as Afghanistan where the terrain meant they couldn't use their main advantage in maneuverability and speed, or Chechnya where they suffered massive losses while fighting over towns.
NATO calls a force motorized if it has wheeled combat vehicles. Unit nomenclature is based on its most common asset.
What you say about the losses is true, however, they do better than mechanized forces in terms of agility and resource losses. In open country they do even better since they can displace far faster and have much lower logistical requirements.
Suffering losses is not a disqualifier for the technique if the alternative is even costlier or more incompetent. In addition, USSR tactics call for short-range, "in your face" vehicle engagements. NATO tends to use them more for fixing, blocking, and base of fire duties in constricted terrain. With the extended range on their main weapons they can often (but not always) execute from a relatively safe range.
Yeah in the first Chechen war they were pressed in to roles they should never have been used in. They were not meant for urban combat on back alleys, same as the Humvees were terrible at surviving IED:s they just were not made for it.
You mean the Chinese rig. Soviets copied Chicom chest rigs. LBV is shit, I think you mean the FLC.
The hero has revealed himself
I gotta love simple design of Soviet era equipment
Vietnamese, we still use equipment like Soviet Union: chest rig for ammunition, bag for gasmask, cheap canvas shoes, shovel is wear in the back by using a 0.5mm thickness rope, use a simple rucksack with no ziplock, no fancy clip, just canvas and sewn into a shape of a rucksack. It was cheap, easy to fix, and of course if you have a body armor, just wear it first then apply your equipment, and of course Vietnam army can have a huge supply of equipment for a war with minimum equipment for a soldier to go to a fight

After the collapse of the Soviet Union Russia had the stockpiles of those army gears for decades to come. Giving the tense economic situation in the 90s it would be stupid not to use this gear instead of producing new one.
True, although the designing and manufacturing of new gear started in 90's and early 00's, namely Barmitsa and Permyachka complects, it just wasn't mass production at the time

used a picture of a 2008 Russian Soldiers, rather than a 2018 picture, Same thing for US soldier. Kinda skewing the perception since Ratnik has pretty much made the Soviet gear obsolete.
True, and also the fact that the US Army and Air Force are switching to US MultiCam. That Digital Camo is done for. Same with the Air Force's Airman Battle Dress (Digital Tigerstripes - ABD)
@Wyatt Earp Have you seen NWUs or MARPAT? They are pretty astounding. SEALs seem to enjoy their digitals. Marines love theirs. CADPAT is still renowned too. Digital isn't bad until you make it bad. Which is what the Army and Navy did after MARPAT was introduced.
NIET! SOVIET GEAR IS FINE! NO NEED MOLLY IN FIELD!
Geist 88 lol I understand that
2008 was also the year the big reforms started in the Russian army.
Having worn and tested both, I would argue that the M88 soviet uniform is absolutely superior to the United state's M81 cut uniform from the same developmental period. They didn't particularly cheap out on those uniforms until the 90's, and even then the cut and functionality of that uniform far surpasses the American equivalent.
M81 is a camouflage pattern not a cut. The cut you're looking for is BDU.
My uniform looks like Cuban's military uniform.
Why did US gear change where Russian gear lingered on? *looks at defense spending budgets* Hmmmmm.
Looks at the US economy compared to the russian economy. Hmmmmmmm
@@biggiec8224 look at the US economy to every other economy, then compare military spending. It's kinda insane when their Navy has to keep track of their Airforce separately
@Bhum Brahmavira yeah, if you ask me it's kind of rediculous. And explains why United States always has the most up to date equipment for military personnel.
To be fair ALICE is still being used by US Military units to this day.
@Bhum Brahmavira
Nonsense, those carrier groups and bases will be used to blockade and strangle China. The official US whitepapers discuss the first and second island chains, the vulnerability of China's SLOC from the Persian Gulf through the straits of Malacca and South China sea. The Chinese recognize the existential threat posed by the USN and are both expanding their ability to secure their SLOC and diversify into alternate routes with the new silk road and belt-and-road. Nobody that has observed the numerous deadly blockades and starvation sanctions implemented by the US and allies believes the USN funadamentally exists to defend the "freedom of navigation" for anyone but US and it's allies and deny (and threaten to deny) such to rivals.

I served in the US Army from 1988-2016. Our uniforms and field gear didn't change at all from the early 80s until 2005.
He is wearing a Sailor undershirt, not a VDV undershirt, the VDV undershirt would be light blue.
@samy701 incorrect, the 1950s commander of the VDV was ex soviet navy, he found the shirts useful and simple during the war so at first he used actual naval ones as you said but he eventually had a version made for the VDV in light blue in 1951
That undershirt is what all Spetsnaz uses. It seems like a tradition.

Like the AK, it never fails
Setting Mind Actually, it sometimes does.

I've seen some AKs break down from seconds of sustained fire. And no, the AK still suffers wear and tear.
Russian/Soviet AK never fails if: you are a good soldier, that cariing about your gun :p But if you are using another AK (chinese, romanian...) it fails a lot
CarL- os Soviet AKs do fail. Even caring soldiers have AKs that have defects. It is sturdy, not gonna downplay that, but it does fail.

Not a bad video. Only one thing left kinda bad aftertaste - stating USSR was getting ready for WWII and armed so hard only because "commies were afraid to lose power". It's ok if you think so, but it makes it look like it was a political war, not war for survival for majority of soviet population. Most modern western people believe Hitler used genocide only against jews and ignore that he didn't even try to hide the fact that for prosperity of Third Reich most eastern slavs had to die sooner or later, regardless of their political system.
P.S. Bonus historical points if you read who were main sponsors of NSDAP and how that story ended, then look at history of Al Qaeda and ISIS. Drawing historycal parallels is fun at times.

I guess if Europeans have negative thoughts about Russia, it doesn't make them the USA salves or ass lickers. Russia which confronts with the USA is kinda dumb, cos they are not even on the same continents. There are no controversial boundaries, no ex-war based hatred between nations, only opposition of ideologies. But EU is on the same continent, and they had conflicts with Russia in the past, and that caused tension for a reason, even more, when Russia was at supreme power while being USSR.

1:28 interesting fact: Afghan Soldiers would use Soviet Belt buckles
I think a major reason Soviet/ComBloc shit lasts so long, even with the surplus market, is that there was no reason for it not to. Communism obviously doesn't have the concept of planned obsolescence. Stuff was made to last so that it can be distributed to everyone, and such transport takes time, comrade :^)
Praljak the Remover compared to America where arms manufacturers pay politicians to make sure the taxpayers overpay for absolutely everything
Praljak the Remover Let's be honest though, a huge reasons why the Russians haven't upgraded their gear, especially when it comes to personal protective equipment, is simply because they didn't have the money. In addition, Soviet, and even Russian Doctrine places far less emphasis on individual soldier survivability then Western Doctrine does. Even the new Ratnik system has only been rolled out for a small fraction of the Russian Ground Forces, while the US military is already on an entirely new BDU, plate carrier, and armor system even from that 2008 picture you've showed. It's a difference between spending $600 billion a year vs $40 billion a year on your military. Sure, a lot of US procurement might be wasteful, but you simply cannot compare those budgets
I have a pair of Czech M60 boots. Bought those bad boys 5 years ago and they've lasted a lot longer than most of boots I've ever worn. Not necessarily the most comfortable boots ever, but the fact the soles were screwed on with nails makes it a little better.
They also made a fuck ton of just about everything.
Fairly speaking old soviet uniform is very convenient to wear. As a civilian I find it the best hard or dirty work uniform and any time I have a chance to buy the old one, I prefer it against any other sustainable uniform in the market.
PS since 2012 official military uniform actually started to evolve. The question of money, I guess.
The constant camera angle changes is painful. The content is great. Stick to one angle or if you have to change, make it infrequent as to maximize effect.
Honestly thought he was doing it for comical effect

Standard of RUclips comment section
It’s a good video, he could always do a part two and go into depth on what each piece of equipment is made of with pro’s and con’s of manufacturing example, first AK-47 was made from a milled receiver then eventually a stamped receiver. Why? Stamping is cheaper faster without losing significant quality
Love the video just a bit of criticism on the amount of jumpcuts you have. Maybe tone them down a bit, sometimes they are a bit distracting.
Jack Fourie its his first time doing something like this so he was probably making mistakes, forgetting lines and the such so he decided to use jump cuts instead of attempting to reshoot. I think he made the right choice cause the video was already delayed quite a bit and reshooting wouldn't help
I Agree fully. I enjoyed the video and the concept but the jumpcuts are to many and to frequent
I think many of those cuts were for him to look from one camera to the other, as he's using multiple angles. But yeah, they could be smoother, although for a first try it's pretty damn good.

G'day FH, This video was my first exposure to your channel. I'm an historian and military researcher. I must confess that, at first, I wasn't enamoured to your humour but then quickly recognised you were a bloke who knew what he was talking about and spoke authoritatively; all evidence that you've done your research and homework. I admired this video so much I subscribed and 'rang the bell'. To be honest your animated thumbnails I'd seen in the past had put me off watching your videos. In my RUclips experience animated content is usually a sign of simplistic, dumbed down content. I've just now eyeballed a few of your animated videos and was impressed by your level of knowledge even though I'm not a great fan of the presentation style.
I enjoyed your 'to-camera' approach in this video and the use of real props and photographs to underline your narrative. Old and new maps, photographs, newspaper clippings etc. carry more weight with me, an average viewer who also happens to be a military documentary maker. I'll stick with viewing your animated content... I'll probably get used to it... however, I hope you do more videos with the production values of this one, no matter how long they take to produce.
Good on you for this channel. I think history is a vitally important subject, especially for younger people who can form distorted or totally incorrect viewpoints simply because they have not been exposed to factual history. Sadly, it is not taught in schools as much as it was.
In 2018 it is a travesty that Japanese school children, even tertiary students, are still not taught about the appalling atrocities of the former Japanese Imperial military regime. Of course all sides committed some form of atrocity but their on-going, official policy of omitting large sections of their 20th Century history is unforgivable; along with their total inability to use the simple word ‘sorry’. But that’s another topic. Please keep up the good work and all the best to you. Cheers, BH Hobart, TAS.

Nice vid, good understanding. it is important to realize that our army is 90% about "painting grass into green color", as we say it, but the rest are as modern as you may expect and they use the very best gear which is already copied and improved by our manufacturers and purchased on an individual or regimental level.
I’m working on recycling some East German magazine pouches so I can turn them I to a chest rig. As I cut them apart I have learned how the pouches were made and the fabric kind of impressed me. It is cotton but has some kind of PU or PVC lining as for seems just as durable as modern tactical nylon fabric.

@@thelucas1146 that is true but it was a joke, like "papa Kim" or "daddy Hitler"
*Hey feature fittings Michael here*
Mate. What a fantastic video indepth, to the point and added opinions that are informative but not biased, no flashy bullshit intros. This video is the equivalent of a beautiful home cooked meal after a bender. Well done mate quality video
Also some of the Russian hats still have the Hammer and Sickle into the Red Cruible which some officers still wear.
3:10 "Quantity has a quality all its own" Stalin once said.
And to some extend he was right for some things you can sacrifice quality on some things for quantity as russian gear proved to last so long in service yet not being overly simple to become obsolete
I love old Soviet gear. Especially “that bag”
Im a simple man, I saw the uniform at 0:57, I clicked like.
nicely explained
well done
Why didn’t you wear a balaclava?
Holden Vallei because he is indoors with a ceiling under 10ft
Chris Lesemann wait why does that matter?
A little too many angle changes for my taste. I would appreciate it you maybe halved the amount. Otherwise, top quality, as always.
I really loved the video! I didnt realise how long the soviet gear lasted.
Keep in mind specialized groups like the 45th VDV Recon always got fancy tactical gear and were some of the first who get Western gear around 2010.
