- Gadge shows us how easy it is to put together a Soviet VDV Afghan War load out for airsoft. Whilst not a specific impression. This guide is intended as a starting point for Russian and Soviet Afghanistan War load outs. Especially those for Soviet airborne or VDV.
This is intended as a basic guide for skirmishing and not for re-enacting or living history. It is not an impression.
We consider boots, eye-pro, face pro, ear pro and gloves PPE. The player should use what is best for their needs in these cases. That may or not mean period correct.

What do you think of this loadout? Let us know!
Can we please see a Falkland British army lodout please love the videos
This was great! Love these Cold war Soviet loadouts!
Great overview by Gadge with some excellent highlights concerning detail and options. Admittedly I'm trying to look at putting together a motor rifles kit at the moment, I've got most my intended purchase list complete although there are still gaps requiring further research.
Out of curiosity do any of the team have any tips for tracking down Soviet-Afghan war era kit?
Very impressive and informative video. I'm planning of getting a late cold war era Soviet border guard loadout myself.
What did you use for the collar guard?
One of the bigger reasons why i love dressing up as Russian / Soviet soldiers... the gear is just so classy and affordable !
I wouldnt say they are classy, nor affordable. But soviet era gear has some kind of a charm
@PlanetCaravan they are very classy especially earlier uniforms and as for affordability it really depends on wether or not you live in a post soviet country. For me a bulgarian frogskin camo jumpsuit costs around 6 euro for example. Mag pouches are around that price too helmets are 10 euro and so on. Its cheaper than regular clothes here
@@stasianatanasov6294 I think were talking about countries like west europe mostly, so i wouldnt compare bulgarian trash gear with pristine soviet uniform in large size (expensive)
@@planetcaravan2925 and what makes bulgarian soviet gear trash exactly?
@@stasianatanasov6294 Does 2 negatives equal positive in this case?
What I like about Soviet gear is that you can modify it really easily. And the best part about it is that the soldiers actually modified their gear quite a lot which means it's not historically inaccurate.
For example I have modified my KZS by getting rid of all the buttons and sewing the ftont together. It's basically a hoodie now and I love wearing it. Light and comfortable.
I added ykk zippers, looks extremely cool.
There’s also an airborne cut version of the M88 jacket with only 2 pockets and an internal holster
The way you present these loadouts is amazing. Starting from the most basic outfit and adding to it, is a great way of including all budgets. The information is very well presented and that you include historical facts and encourage respect for the people who actually wore the uniforms is very appriciated! Great work! 😃
Thankyou Jimmi. We have to fight the urge to put too much information in. These are intended to be an introduction to the loadout and as you say as accessible as possible whilst still keeping historical integrity.
Damn man how the heck do you guys only have 4800 subscribers????? Your content is better then most other youtubers!!! Love these loadout videos. Such good ideas.
Sensible mature content in a hobby that’s a bit lacking in sensible mature players :)
Yet again, you and Gadge have hit it out the park, fantastic stuff. Thanks for the great content.
Thanks Daniel. It’s great to get some lovely feedback.
This is gold content
Thanks!
This was great! Love these Cold war Soviet loadouts!
These videos are great. They give you an idea on where to start the loadout and what it'll cost
M88 winter jackets look cool also
Really interesting, didactic and well fully explained. Thank you man for this vid!
Glad you liked it!
Solid guide for airsofters. Although I will say when it came it M88, dont think Ive ever seen anyone with patches. And medals, only rarely in battle, mostly seen them worn at lineup at base. Thats ofc more at a reenactor level.
Very cool. Thanks for the video and kit.
No probs. Glad you liked it.
Nice vid! I'm rocking a KZS suit and Ssh-68 helmet and it's worked out great so far. Getting the Y-straps soon. Always nice to see impression kits in airsoft, it adds alot. Keep it up 👍
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it.
These loadout videos are amazing!
Thanks Joe. We felt there was a bit of gap for these videos and viewers seem to really like them!
@@AnvilAirsoftTV appreciate all the hard work gents, any chance we can see a falklands loadout or a Northern Ireland loadout?
Falklands later this year when I’ve finished getting everything together. I’m doing a 90s Brits in Bosnia soon.
@@AnvilAirsoftTV that'd be great! I was actually chatting to an ex guardsman who served in both northern Ireland and Bosnia and he was saying about guys modifying their rifles such as painting them and adding gangster grips from buckshee pistol grips etc I can't find any information about that online was wondering if Gadge knows anything about thator if it can be mentioned in future videos? Can't imagine many CSM's or QM's/armourers were happy with guys doing that to their rifles
That was realy cool Tom and Gadge
Thanks Mark. Virtually all Gadge’s work this week. I just held the camera!
@@AnvilAirsoftTV you channel makes you think how to make you combat gear look better as lest is more
It’s often the little touches that make it look good.
Great video love the kit would like to see more.
I’m sure we’ll so more Soviet/Russian loadouts as this series progresses.
Very nice! I am personally working on a 1st Chechen War Naval Infantry kit, just ordered nearly everything, all I need left to order is the actual uniform itself and the boots.
Sounds great.
Gotta love vintage stuff!
We love some historical airsoft
Fantastic
Thankyou
This is soo cool i like what soviet soilders modified in the field
I’m always fascinated by soldier fixes.
I’ve got myself a KZS jacket I’ve mixed it with some old school bdu woodland pattern trousers and multicam plate carrier, looks mega
Another great video ! 👍💪
Sounds eclectic! :)
@@AnvilAirsoftTV I like to mix it up a little 😂. I’ve got a set it Omani army desert DPM works well with multicam
I had accidentally accumulated most of this kit, so I just recently got the remaining bits to finish it off. I've had an aks74 for a while just because they are my favorite ak variant, I found a type 81 chicom for $3, and I already had a shirt that looks very similar to talynashka. Now with the kvs and a couple other bits its pretty well rounded
Nice it’s great when that happens. Most of my British Loadouts have come about like that.
If you wan't to go for the utmost comfort in warm weather the KZS suit paired with tennis shoes is the best option
(navy blue/white is the most iconic color for the shoes but there were multiple other color combinations aswell)
It’s an iconic look but there’s no way my ankles could survive :)
@@AnvilAirsoftTV well yeah, sneakers and tennis shoes rarely give protection or support for the feet - especially on rough terrain
The Afghan mountains must have been a pain in the ass to traverse with such shoes with all the gear!
The SSh-68 helmet was the standard issue at the time
Very nice collection of kit. The Panama hat is a classic. The Soviets supplied loads to the various groups they supported. Could be useful in a variety of loadouts.
I’m pretty sure Gadge has some more Soviet era
and later Russian loadouts for us! We’re starting with the more accessible ones first :)
@@AnvilAirsoftTV Nice, looking forward to it. Also a Rhodesian one would be cool.
When VFC bring the LAR/FAL I’m going to treat myself to some Rhodesian kit.
@@AnvilAirsoftTV Good to hear. Hope VFC are more punctual on their releases than some manufacturers.
1:39 There are 2 versions of this suit, separatable and a...a suit. One later, one earlier.
Yes, life vests were a thing since they already had a mag-sized 'pockets' for foam and all you had to do is just cut the vest and take the foam out. Some guys would take RD-54 kit pouches and sew them together. Some were wearing 'siriyka' which is a hat from OKZK-D single use NBC suit. The panama is from the southern regions kit. 1959 uniform kit.
KZS was loved for breathing well. In factm this suit is supposed to be worn over OZK, in case of a nuclear blask it would absorb the heat and burn instead of OZK getting damaged.
Some VDV dudes, epsecially in recon detachements of units, would buy 'Mabuta' from GRU SF units.
Afghanka VSR-84 was designed after OKZK-D.
Also R-148 'Little boy' or perhaps R-147 radio.
6b3 wasn't really used by VDV considering their on-foot mobility so they would prefer 6b2 or no armour at all.
Those plastic 1.5 liter flasks are not later pattern, they're just southern regions flasks, or officiallly 'the X for regions with hot climate'. Just like later pig-skin Siriyka and 'olivier' mountain-desert uniform.
Medical headscarf was also used as a headband.
Whilst your comments are valued please remember that we cover airsoft Loadouts and not living history or re-enactment level setups.
Would love to see some Falklands loadouts here.
We’ve got a Falklands game later in the year so that’ll be coming. Gadge also has an extensive Cold War era British collection.
@@AnvilAirsoftTV Yes ive seen many a photo of him online haha.
That bandage kit in stock is the coolest..!! Looking for fixed stock wooden AKM things like that: any ideas? tape op steel mags? Tape on fixed stock? Just some minor decorations would be cool
Have a look at Afghan or Yugoslav war AKs. Fighters would personalise their weapons.
I am American. I have almost all this real gear including the AKs. Cool vid man.
Love the Video! Super intrigued by the bleaching of the Chicom, I've got like 3 of the things and would be eager to try bleaching it from green to tan as you showed - Do you happen to have some step by step instructions on how to do it? Many thanks!
We used roughly a 30:1 water to bleach solution. Soaked it for 30-60 minutes but you’ll really have to keep an eye on it throughout. Poke it with a wooden stick to make sure the bleach is distributed and wear rubber gloves! Once you are happy with the colour. Rinse with lots of fresh cool water to remove the bleach solution. Your results may vary due to differences in dyes, fabric and the bleach itself.
@@AnvilAirsoftTV Many thanks! Might give it a shot soon! Much appreciated
I already have an 80s S Airborne kit. Now I wat the other team.
Родина не забудкт твой подвиг, солдат.
The panama hat, or ”panamamka”, would be stripped from the leather band and the Soviet star, it sticks out like a sore thumb in the field
1)Эта нашивка обозначает принадлежность к мотострелковым войскам, у ВДВ она была голубой;
Thanks for the comments. Sadly yes it’s now very hard for us to find Soviet and Russian gear. We tend to worry more about getting the outline right for airsoft rather than the small details but it’s nice to know we are pretty close!
The only detail that doesn't add up to me is the patch and badges on the M88. I just haven't seen any photos of soldiers wearing any kind of additions to their afghanka.
I believe that the later Russian army used a good amount of this stuff during the Chechen wars as well, so if you get the right equipment you can reenact two wars!
AKMS goes far too
I could've just gotten a ak-74 yesterday, but a real one.
Not possible in the UK.
@@AnvilAirsoftTV Maybe y'all need to throw a 1776 party those tend to get you rights back.
SSh-40 is not incorrect for the period, but it was almost completely replaced by SSh-68 by that point.
Also 6b2 is correct, it is the same in Russian. The only piece of gear that I very often see named incorrectly is the К6-З helmet, which is actually called K6-Z, because that's what a Russian letter "Z" looks like.
Thanks for letting us know. Though I did have a quick look and saw lots of images of SSh-40 being used in Afghan and right through the turn of the century.
@@AnvilAirsoftTV Some VDV units wore SSH-40. Very unit dependent, as it always is with Soviet Afghan.
I want to make an late war infatry loadout. What should I change from this loadout?
Since you mentioned it in the Vietnam episode, I was wondering exactly how you manage the hit-and-revive system in your games?
Being an Australian, my experience with airsoft-like sports is limited to gelsoft. It's practically airgun-law-compliant airsoft but with biodegradeable water crystal instead of plastic pellets -- the technology is quite mature and with the "hardened" gels we can easily maintain 300fps with ammo that weighs in on the heavier end of the 6mm BB market, around 0.35 grams on average.
Our rule here is that you can be revived once in the field, at which time an ally takes your "tourniquet" and secures it to your left arm. If you're hit again, you return to your out-of-play area, after which apply typical rules appropriate to your game type. I could probably adapt that to a multiple-hit rule to represent extra hits being absorbed by armor. But I think that, for my needs, is something that would only come up in our attacker-defender games.
It depends on which game you go to. Most don’t have armour rules. With the rule set we mention here from Gunman Airsoft everyone has one life. If you wear full weight armour you get another and with an armoured helmet you get a third. These are normally represented by a bandage. Proper field dressings or loose tourniquets preferred. These must be applied by another player. Once you are out you stay in place whilst the battle rages on to make it more thematic. Bandages can be removed by a medic after the engagement and returned to the player. Or at a command point. With Covid most games have taken the player to player contact out. But someone else must be present for you to apply one.
People are expected role play receiving wounds and applying bandages to make it more immersive for everyone.
@@AnvilAirsoftTV That all seems straightforward enough. Thanks!
Cool loadout i got the SS LEITO
Bit after this time but a cool pattern.
a video tutorial of bleaching your chi com would be much appreciated.
I’ll do a short.

Mild bleach solution.
@@AnvilAirsoftTV awesome, thanks!
Where did you get your Afghanka uniform? And how much was for it?
until 88, the motorifles exclusively used m69/73 uniforms, and after 88 and 89 afghans were not used, only two divisions received them and they were exclusively worn by officers there anyway, only the VDV after 84 received afghans and also primarily only blouses in the winter version, complete summer afghans they almost didn't get to Afghanistan, even though you can see them in a lot of photos and videos, they are captured by one unit at the end of the war
I really want to try out that Soviet uniform.
Which
@@planetcaravan2925 Mostly Afghanka and Mabuta.
Have you guys ever played Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain? The first 40% or so of the game is set in Afghanistan in 1984. All of the enemy troops you have to fight and sneak around are Soviet airborne troops, just wondered if you had any opinions on the way they're modelled and such. There's even a gameplay mechanic where enemy troops will equipped themselves with certain uniform changes depending on how you engage them, e.g a high amount of headshots will see troops wearing helmets, a lot of body kills from long range will see troops wearing that body armor showed in the video. So fascinating.
Gadge has played it. I’ll ask.
Awesome!
Yeah i've played it, its alright. Quite a lot of incorrect kit if i remember correctly. Its fun to play but historically not something i'd use for a reference.
@MuffinSponge2 Metal Gear is a fiction. There's pretty much nothing correct about it.
That doesn't make it a bad game series, of course, just don't use it to substitute an actual gear and uniform research.
@@honzabalak3462 Oh, I'm not. I was just pointing out the mix of Soviet uniforms in the game and how cool they look and also, wondered how accurate they are.
Hey man, fantastic! But quick correction.
I know you said this isn't for living history, and that's fine, but the Ssh-40 is wrong for the Soviet-Afghan War. The Ssh-68 was the helmet of choice for the Soviet Union by then. Now I know you said this is only for airsoft, but the ONLY reason I'm mentioning this is the Ssh-68 is much more readily available in all sizes (I'd recommend a Size 1 unless you have a MASSIVE head), and it's about the same price if not CHEAPER! I got mine, FACTORY MINT, 1975 dated, for about 55 bucks, or about 40 Pounds, on ebay. Aside from that, though, honestly I think you could get away with this in Filmsim/Reenactment events!
There are a large number of photos of Ssh-40 helmets being worn in Afghanistan and well into the 2000s. You don’t even have to try hard to be able to make them out. So it’s not wrong at all. They might not have been manufacturing them at that point but they were absolutely being issued. The cost saving is a valid point however we do these on a shoe string budget so we use what we have available.
@@AnvilAirsoftTV that's absolutely understandable, upon doing a little more research, The Сш40 was indeed issued, as you said. Although I would like to point out that what you ended up with is a rather later war kit, as well it seems you did take a bit of inspiration from the 9th company (the actual unit, as well as the film), so I think an Сш68 would definitely have been more appropriate, but, what you could find is what you could find. If you want to get technical, variants of the Сш40 were issued well into the new millennium, especially in the former satellite states like the Ukraine. I certainly didn't intend to come off as overly critical. This is honestly one of the best and most accurate rundown involving the uniform and equipment of soviet VDV forces in Afghanistan on RUclips.
I know I am a bit late but is the 6b2 from greyshop. If so how is it quality wise and is it worth it.
It’s a real one. Gadge bought it a long time ago.
hey just a question,i bought a type 56 rig and im trying to bleach it to the color that you have. ive tried it but the color isn’t changing at all. any tips?
Mines bleached. Maybe you have one made of synthetic rather than cotton?
So far I’ve got the 6B2 vest, a chi-com rig, and the helmet along with a gp-5 gasmask. I would like to know what you got to fit inside the 6B-2 vest as I’m having a hard time finding an insert.
Its as it was made
@@Gadgeization what?
@@gasmask7064 the vest has the same inners it was made with when i bought it it was simply russian surplus
The gp 5 is a civilian gas mask hence was never used in Afghanistan or even in the armed forces
For the suit what's the measurements for 1&2 sizes, I don't know what size I am, is there a chart or any reference point?
To be honest it varies massively. There are some suggestions online if you search.
This stuff has gotten much more expensive I. The last couple years, and you’ll have to use substitutes if you’re on a small budget. For example the Afghanka can be replaced with the m69
The current situation doesn’t help either
Was the Chicom the only web rig they used?
Some converted backpacks. There was also a issued chest rig towards the end of the conflict.
