Similar things happen quite a lot in wartime. Several Dutch cities were bombed by lost US and British bomber units during WW2, with heavy loss of civilian life and a lot of destruction, bomber units that mistakenly thought they were over Germany and misidentified for example Enschede as Muenster.

There was even an attack in 1985 where they attacked a military Barracks complex with 2 Super Mysteres and 2 A-37s. My fathet shot and damaged an MI 8, and his wingman shot down an MI-24.
This is another great example that a leaders job isnt to outright ignore people's input, but is actually to gather and collate as much input as possible from as many people as possible and then weigh it all duly.

It wasn't an accident at all. The Soviets were providing MASSIVE military support to Saddam Hussein's INVASION of Iran, as Saddam had sworn to PUT DOWN Iran's Islamic Revolution. The Soviets were all-for this, and actually ORDERED Saddam to invade Iran and remove the Khomeinist regime, because the Islamists were aggressively backing the Afghan Mujahideen. This invasion was an attempt to gauge Iran's northern defenses, which, despite the war with Saddam, proved to be too much for the Soviets to handle as they were already bogged down in Afghanistan and elsewhere as it was. Thus, the Shia theocracy repulsed Saddam and endured for decades longer until today.

Because Afghanistan is a backward country and has no infrastructure
Hey, Denmark invaded Sweden and started a 90 minutes war back in 2000 :D
But it is also a PERFECT example of what happens, when managers disregard lower level people, who knows what, they are doing...
Ye know - I have a few books about the Angola war. Where the Soviets and Cubans went up against the South Africans. In most combat environments, the South Africans were astonished at the stupidity of their foes.
Was this the conflict with the US & SA backed anti-communist UNITA versus the Soviet & Cuban backed communist MPLA?
Must have been a wild one.
How did it end up as an MPLA victory at that point?
Did they just have more bodies for the meat grinder or something?
This truly is an USSR moment.
US and Britain did similar things during WW2, bombing Dutch cities by mistake when entire squadrons of B-17s and Lancasters got lost trying to find their targets in Germany.

A Paper Skies video goes live on a Friday. What a treat!
Imagine those rural Iranian passengers riding a bus peacefully in the early morning, and suddenly seeing a load of Soviet choppers flying next to your window. lol.
Fun fact: I think there was another random Iranian bus finding itself in front of the U.S. Army in Operation Eagle Claw in 1980!
Would be kind of cool if one of the driver/passenger is the same guy.
"We really kicked Afghanistan's ass today, comrade."
"...This is Iran."
That's a whoopsie.
Afghanistan was on the same side as the Soviets, the major Mujahedeen factions were terrorist organizations (Hezbi Islami and Jamiati Islami were considered terrorists by the Daoud Khan government in the 70s) with ties to the Pakistani intelligence
Imagine if the Soviets pulled that while the Shah was still in charge.
@@souvikrc4499 The Afghan Shah was weak af, it was Daoud Khan who militarized and industrialized. Daoud Khan did more and since he was part of the royal family he was liked by traditionalists who also supported the Shah since he was basically just a more competent Shah (but instead being the President)
@@PashtunPatriotism I meant the Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi

Thanks! You really produce some great videos. Always looking forward to your posts.
Thank you for support!
I could listen to your videos all day long. The commentary, the video editing, the compelling stories. Bravo, please keep it coming
If I had a nickel for every time Russian started a war with a smaller nation they should have beat on paper but lost because the soldiers weren’t trained to fight in anything except an all out firefight, I’d have 2 nickels, which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird it happened twice
Vietnam, Afghanistan also comes to mind. Guess superpowers werent that superior after all.
Have another nickel with Finland
And Japan is worth another nickel
Same goes for the US and NATO too. They got defeated by the guerillas. But what saved their face at the end were the technological, resource and overwhelming airpower disparity with respect to their adversaries.
The Talibans could have easily taken out the NATO troops if they were supplied with modern SAM systems to threaten the air dominance, like what they did to USSR thanks to the US made stinger missiles back in the cold war.
@@nihalbhandary162both Nam and Afghanistan had heavy meddling from rival super powers.
Ukraine holding out because the USA is sending them guns and bombs and using them as proxy to bleed the Russian army dry.
Same thing the USA did when Russia invaded Afghanistan and the same Russia did when the USA invaded Vietnam and when China invaded Vietnam.
Everytime you post I'm double happy. New Paper Skies Video and you are safe.
It's incredible how small errors can have such a big impact
Wow! I’ve never seen the clip of all of the helicopters flying closely together like that. For a country that was still in the 19th century, it must of been scary to see that coming over the horizon.
Eh...Iranian Air Force at that time was the 5th biggest one and one of the strongest Air forces in Asia, only comparable to Israel. You don't seem to know what you are talking about.
@@thenoobprincev2529He may have been referring to Afghanistan, rather than Iran.
@@thenoobprincev2529 I’m talking about the particular clip from Afghanistan. I’m not comparing to other militaries since that’s not what the video or my comment is about.
@@SaltyChip I reckon Afghanistan, while living in the 19th century, had plenty of experience with enemy helicopters flying over (and even more experience shooting them down).
the height of ignorance this guy just posted on an international platform is truly astonishing.
I remember this!
It was in the newspapers in Iran! Also there was a photo of it too.
It didn’t escalate because it was a genuine mistake! The phantoms took off from Chabahar airbase! The sidewinders didn’t maintain the locks because the CCCP helicopter pilots simply shut down their engines. So sad the guards died and happy no Russian soldiers died for no reason. Also credit to Iran Airforce as it shown it is literally alert even though it was midnight! A lesson to all westerns and eastern people:” Iran seats in between! It is in a dangerous area surrounded by dangerous countries from all sides!” So when Iranians talking about politics don’t compare it with your nice western standards! Iran is not neighbouring Switzerland or Belgium! As you can see our neighbours been in trouble throughout years! I hope both Iran and Russia ended up with far better administrations that these people deserve! Neither Russians deserve this nor Iranians! Hope to see peace in Eastern Europe and Russian forces evacuating Ukraine especially Crimea! Not happy at all when people killing people! Let us be friend and use language not guns. To all Russian friends that read this:” when a person anywhere in the world is in life threatening condition we all mobilise emergency to save them, when a cancerous patient is diagnosed we spend tens of thousands to save them, why on earth we should kill people that defending their country and dignity?” No Ukrainian must die in their own country the very same way this Russian general prevented his airforce to engage Iranians in their soil! So why you kill Ukraine forces in Ukraine?
Agreed
Why they kill ? Bc the people have interests. If your kids have hunger you will kill too. Reality vs. Question Reality. The world is build on war. Your food and drinking comes bc someone fought bc it.
Good points, man.
I would take that up with the IRI with those good points.
I like your comment... I think Iranian and Russian people are hearty self sufficient people... But both populations need to stand up and create better governments for themselves.... It's obvious that Iranians are trying desperately.... You can't say the same for the Russians tho...
RIP for the security guard, during their shift never ever expecting get attacked by so many military helicopter
I love your content, and your animations are getting better all the time. I suggest doing a video on Aeroflot Flight 6502. It crashed after the pilot made a bet he could land the plane blind, with the cockpit windows curtained.
So this happened _before_ the Tu-22 incident. Otherwise I would have suggested that it was "scouting" for this missin'
Do you have any stories from Nicaragua during the 1980's if there were any Soviet troops? My father and many Honduran airforce pilots flew constant CAP on the Honduras - Nicaragua border.
I hope those Russian soldiers realize how lucky they were that those Iranian F-4 Phantoms were not carrying 500 pound bombs or BL-755 cluster bombs. They were damn lucky.
they would just shoot them down. westoid weapons are shitty, yk
Iran was pretty conservative with their western munitions. They didn’t have a lot of them after the Revolution.
@@grahamstrouse1165 perhaps so, but even a couple of Mk-82 500 pound bombs would have been more than enough to wipe them out
@@grahamstrouse1165 No, it was 1982, still in the first years of the Iraq-Iran war. Iran still had plenty of munitions. I think they just didn't want to escalate the situation.
Iran was not stupid to use excessive force against USSR, it is not hard to understand why there where no casualties despite them "firing" their 20mm cannons on a massed landing site of Soviet helicopters. It was a formal response, a bark if will, command had ordered them to bark but not bite. Attacking Soviet Army with massive casualties would've been a suicide and humiliation for Iran. A Chihuahua barking at a Bear. They restored their formal pride and Soviets apologized, wise command from both sides. And today they are best friends and allies.
The bus passengers have experienced the Kyiv Reservoir moment before such existed...
Also, I like your ПТН ПНХ on the An-18)))

I'm Iranian and I've never heard this story before, and I'm feeling kinda proud that iran military responded that fast, and i think it's because the military was still well equipped and trained due to last regime efforts
I think it is mainly due to the iran-iraq war which should be ongoing at the time.
Because you are younger! It was in the newspaper in Iran at that time
@@hamedseyedali5905then why has it been forgotten?

The Iranian Pilot Who stref Them still alive
at this point, im convinced the successful flight of Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin (rip, murdered hero) was an accident.
The first rocket that didn't explode in the vacuum of space. Imagine how much astronauts they sent to death.
Imagine one day spacecrafts delivering supplies to Pluto and finding the remains of some Soviet-era rocket that went horribly off course.
With the amount of fuckery going on, it is a miracle the casualties were as low as they were.
The footage and photos used here are amazing. Nice work finding this stuff and putting it together.
Imagine being an Iranian living near the border and seeing parachute bombs and helicopters headed your way
The response would likely be the Iranian equivalent to “Aw shit, here we go again.”
i see Russian military intelligence is still the greatest oxymoron ever!
Don't reveal Russian secrets 😂
They marked the correct spot on the map and filed a correct report. Everything else was not their responsibility.
Invading by accident, putting land mines by accident, landing by accident. That is a lot of accidents!
Thank you for covering this. Love your style.

Would you consider posting your sources in the video descriptions?
I did just a quick Google search, and the only sources on the first page, was this video.

Objective was given an important and set-for-success name "SOUTH". This probably flew over a lot of peoples heads lol.
Going south meaning failing is an American idiom so most soviets probably had never heard it
It wasn't an accident at all.
This was a routine of Russian Air Force to attack our neighboring village of Arandu Pakistan near Afghan boarder during this war targeting civilians. One of my friends father was among the martyrs.. So no excuse of accidently crossing borders of neighboring countries...
I just found your channel and I must say that your illustrations are very beautiful. You are an artist!
