Espinas was the first monster in Rise to make me actually consider gemming in an anti-status skill. I could juggle the poison and fireblight just fine, but that paralysis bent me over so badly it's not even funny.
Design wise, I absolutely love him, and desperately hope his return isn't a Sunbreak-only thing. His thorny coat of armor is awesome, his generally-placid demeanor really sells him as this smug, almost posh old man that thinks of you as nothing more than a peon beneath his feet. Once you prove yourself though, he really escalates to a "HAVE AT YOU, KNAVE!" kind of fight. His charges to me almost feel like he's jousting with you, or dueling with a foe that he deems worthy.
Not to mention that I absolutely love his background music.
A+, Capcom. You did great on this one!

Well I've played and still play frontier via the community edition so I can provide some Frontier info here.
Espinas used to be a VERY docile monster even compared to now. When woken up, he would simply still proceed to yawn, eat, drink water, and laze about, only casually sweeping his tail left and right slightly or bobbing his head around for MASSIVE damage. You'd also bounce off GUARANTEED on every part of him at this stage due to his impenetrable armor.
The primary flagship of Monster Hunter Frontier and the “Thorn Wyvern”. It is known to have an absolutely perfect defense as its hide is so thick that it will casually stroll about, drink water, and even sleep in the middle of battle when you try to fight it. It only fights back properly when enraged, but otherwise its minute movements do incredible amounts of damage.
Its body is covered in rose-like thorns that produce a poison mixed with a combustible fiery fluid that can shred enemies down in seconds, dissolving flesh. Its design is based on a Rose.
"It is said that one day, an Espinas finally decided to take it seriously, and it ended up being so powerful that it defeated an Elder Dragon.
This was a powerful Kushala Daora that threatened the lively and peaceful Ecosystem of The Great Forest. Villagers thought to evacuate, afraid for their lives. All seemed lost as the horrid wind summoning Elder descended to wreak havoc as all life scurried for cover.
However, just when no one else could’ve expected it, out from the depths of the forest comes the normally peaceful and sleepy lumbering Espinas that lived there. Seeing the threat to its home, it cast aside its cumbersome routine and faced that Kushala down, saving the home of many creatures, surrounding villages, and forever being remembered by the Guild with its official crowned title: “The Lord of the Great Forest”."
Echoes of this lore still exist within the incredible turf war Espinas has with Kushala in Sunbreak.
Despite their destructive potential, Espinas are INCREDIBLY laid back and are of no danger to anyone unless they literally run into it and its poisonous thorny body, as that’s the only thing that makes them dangerous normally. This leads to Espinas actually being a revered and respected monster that is known for protecting their habitats...Until hunting season breaks out.
But even if danger calls, Espinas can always enrage, softening its hide but unleashing its speed and fury with fire that can poison AND paralyze at the same time and so much muscle and strength that even a normal charge attack sends foes mountains high into the air and out of the way.
Welcome to Sunbreak old pal!!! Title update information suggests his Tankier Subspecies Bronze Espinas and/or his fast and furious Rare Species Pearl Espinas are also coming, hurrah for Frontier!!!

I love espinas mainly cuz I feel like he's my spirit monster so to speak and I like the gimmick, plus he's also a perfact counter to kushala. Basically a giant spike poison rock of a wyvern that doesn't care about being batterd with wind and kushala will impale himself on as soon as he gets close,
My personal favourite frontier monster design wise is Baruragaru the vampire leach Leviathan thing and I hope I one day get to fight it

I rather capture monsters than slaying because it just feels interesting more to study them alive rather then study a dead corpse especially sense I am a animal person, also something like espinas where we need to hunt it for it’s venom and we killed it will possibly go bad as when the animal dies the venom will be weaker and will be all gone in a hour. So capturing a living espinas will be very much more valuable not only to get it’s venom but also to study the creature and release it back into the wild where it belongs once finished collecting it’s venom and studying the creature.

I think he can take the Elder Trio pretty well. Kushala we all know will take an L. Chameleos can just do nothing as well and Espinas wouldn't need to worry about Teostra because he doesn't appear in the Jungle or Great Forest, and even then Fire isn't gonna work either.

Espinas, in my opinion, is the peak of Flying Wyverns as an art form; encapsulating all the facets that define the class of wyvern, Espinas builds on these traits and synthesizes them into a hunt against a monster that I found almost as rewarding as I did downright epic!

Espinas is probably my favorite addition to Sunbreak. It's a deceptively simple fight that, due to its hide softening when it enrages, feels like it rewards you for taking the bull by the horns. The trifecta fireballs sound nasty on paper but they are well telegraphed enough that if you get hit by one it's most likely very much on you. Between that and actually having a decent hitzone to work with on its legs even when the rest of it isn't soft (Looking at you, Basarios, you walking bounce spot) makes for a fight that sounded like it would be awful but was an absolute blast. Here's hoping Frontier monsters added in future games are as well done as this one.

Maybe it was because I was using dual blades with tons of constitution but I found Espinas pretty easy. Almost disappointingly so considering the hype. I was running circles around it and its legs were the soft spot so the only adjusting I really had to do was switch off aerial mode (I always default to aerial mode until monsters are down or something)
