This poor guy sounded so overwhelmed and on the verge of tears in this entire call. I’m trying to get out of that dark place now myself. I’m so sorry man.
So sorry RynRynRain, I didn't match the first time around so faced the very real seemingly impossible situation that you and the guy in the video are going through. Hope you find a way through.
Lisa B tuition has grown exponentially since then too so I can just imagine those not on full scholarship affording school and that’s the point it becomes a lifelong burden
@Lisa B That is incredible awesome job!!! you were able to build a prosperous life for yourself without all the sacrifice and massive debt burden that comes with becoming a Dr. I wish your family many more blessings.
This man did everything that he could to better his life. The stupid program sets people up to fail, if you fail the end exam 2-3x you lose the whole program? That’s ridiculous
I have never understood why there are so many things in this country that are designed to punish those who are actively trying to improve their life and contribute to society. You're telling me there's NOTHING this man has to offer after all of the schooling he's received? At this point he's more educated than 95% of the population and it's all worth basically nothing to him because he doesn't test well. Truly a shame. I rarely feel bad for people who call into this show, but this one really got me.
@@TedJesusCChua I'd let him be my family doctor; I'm not kidding, all I really do there is get the most basic of physical exams and blood tests, and the go ahead for prescriptions that I've used for years. If something is serious enough for me, I'd just go to urgent or emergency care.
The medical field is rigorous field. I used to see my sister go days without sleeping because she would be up all night studying, go straight to school in the morning, come back home take a nap, and then go back to school or work. She repeated that for years. The people who study medicine have the peoples lives in their hand so if you can't cut it in school they're not gonna let you become a doctor. Its crazy stuff.
Me too! Well, I finished pharmacy tech school but I don't do that. Still only a couple years into living on the road but I'm saving so much money I started doing research on how I should be investing my money and planning to buy a house. 😅
Yeah its truly a shame. These guys have good intentions to get an education, be independent and contribute to the economy. A first world country where kids go broke because of getting an education
I feel bad for him but he should have grabbed an understanding that a medical degree would recall retaining knowledge because no one wants a doctor in real life that can't be able to recall basic information without a textbook and use critical thinking to be together. This is planning and understanding weakness and strengths. Again, my heart aches but this is an example of knowing your strengths and weaknesses and attacking it.
Not really. EDUCATED and BROKE. Look on the bright side though. I might be broke but hey at least I am educated. When people ask me why I am homeless, I can dish out an educated speech.
34 years old with 430k in student debt without a degree. Wow. Leaving the country might be somewhat of a joke in these comments but in this case i can't really see a better solution
@Bella Femme thought the same thing. I've been grabbing the tissues. Hope he has family or friends that could help him and he starts doing a lot of side jobs to at least get something in his pocket. Heartbreaking. Definitely praying for him.
I feel so, so sorry for this guy. There are too many ignorant people in these comments that have no idea what a soul-crushing, mind-breaking experience medical school is.
I went through a Physical therapist assistant program and it was absolutely awful Medical school sounds like a big mess. As much as it takes, doctors hardly know anything about nutrition or exercise
You gotta use a life to save a life. This is why most people don't become doctors it's basically a life time commitment which many of us can't do so early in our lives.
He should become a pharmaceutical rep. With his knowledge of medicine this could work well. He will be working with doctors everyday and the pay has 6 figures potential. Just my 2 cents.
Trust me guys, he has plenty of pharmaceutical knowledge. Not to mention he has a lot of physiologic and pathophysiologic knowledge. Most Pharmacy reps have a business degree. Sincerely, a doctor
The poor guy did nothing wrong. He didn't buy cars, houses or go on vacations he couldn't afford, he went into debt for all the right reasons, and got chewed up by the system that set him up for failure.
If he can't afford it $430,000 loans are not the answer. I grew up poor couldn't afford college, I joined the Military for them to pay for it. He did not do it for the right reason. He gambled and lost now time to pay the pipper.
@@thebustosfamily just because you grow up poor doesn’t mean the military should be the ONLY option. Just like college the military isn’t for everyone. If you do the work get the grades pass every test then you have proven yourself worthy of higher education. What’s screwed up is that even after doing the first 2 years of medical school, these students aren’t even qualified to get a RN job… or PA… or physical therapist etc. It seems like a sick joke…
I feel bad for the guy, I really do, but in the medical field it would be unethical and dangerous to let someone who has failed back to back years to be considered qualified to be working with patients in the ER
he can do a one year accelerated Bachelor's of science in Nursing degree that would get him to his goal of being in the medical field. then he could become a nurse practitioner which most hospitals will help pay for it and be making over 100k easily.
@@bellabella7899 with ABSN they accept any degree. my friend had a bachelor's in History and was able to do a one year bachelor's degree in nursing. yes he'll have to go into 10-15k more debt to get his degree but at least then he'll be making good money. with nursing you can work as much as you want. I actually don't feel sorry for him at all. make lemonade, man 🍋
@@SaifAli-kq9bv No they can't come after you for debt if you're in a different country. But if he's 430k in debt I doubt he can afford to move anywhere.
It should be against the law to charge that much for education. So let me get this right....When you think about it, you have to pay extreme fees for "YOU" to sit in class, you to study all night long, you to miss sleep, you to not eat very well while in school/ be a broke and starving student, you to do home work, you to take test and midterm/ final exams ect? Wow...why charge so much!? Land of the free...I wonder if this guy would call it "free" when he is struggling to pay 430k to exhibit his own brain power? I wonder why Ramsey didnt inform him about the many loan forgiveness and discharge programs that are available to health care providers (medical staff), and Public Service loan forgiveness PSLF, and so many more not to mention the income based repayment plans? Maybe because many people consider them socialist programs and they equate socialism to some evil deed. I like Ramsey but I question why he did not advise this man to these programs. I didnt hear any real advise other than asking him if he could become a nurse and earn a higher salary versus a teaching job. ?????
It’s completely insane that he was even allowed to borrow so much in the first place. No one would have ever authorized that much for a mortgage, and a home is far more tangible than a degree.
My uncle became a certified financial planner as a side job during he was in med school. He finished paying off his debt when my oldest cousin started college.
MelaninDoc MD Nope it is targeting all Physicians. Hospital C.E.Os and Board of directors are trying to find cheaper alternatives, so they can increase there Bonuses.
This was my biggest fear the entire time I was racking up student loans in medical school. The system is so broken and ridiculous. The fact that at the end, you can fail a board exam, not make it, and still owe hundreds of thousands of dollars. Hoping this guy gets some help and figures it all out.
@@JayP-vh9wc He said he failed twice and that was the end...so sad. I hate standardized tests anyway. There must be tutors you can get to help you learn how to take these tests. Poor guy.
Exactly, the entire lead up is a joke. The school didn’t do right with him, how do you pass their classes and then fail their subjective end test? He’s using the knowledge THEY taught and said he did well in! Says more about THEM than anything else. He showed competence by passing their courses.
Kamran Kambang lol I know right. I’m going into travel nursing next month to pay the rest of my $18,000 off in 4.5 months. Thank god for those options.
@@JediOfTheRepublic some of us is jot born in a country where 50k is the average pay. I'm only making 40k annually and I'm quite happy I manage to pay off 22k debt a year.
I just dropped 10k on a $32,000 loan 2 weeks ago and was complaining. I don't feel so bad now. I'll likely be out of debt in 2 or 3 years. This guy will likely die with his debt.
Take an accelerated nursing program at a local community college. Work while taking classes. Then become a traveling nurse, they get paid twice as much! Living expenses are paid for & he gets to travel the world, while also knocking out his student loan debt. There's hope at the end of the tunnel!
Hi Shinel. As a travel nurse I can tell you your expenses are not paid for by the hospital or recruiting company employing you. You receive a tax free stipend as part of your weekly salary and if you choose to take their housing (as opposed to finding your own on airbnb or somewhere else) they will reduce your stipend considerably which often makes it not worth while to travel nurse. It is in your best interest not to have your living expensive covered by the company. But you are 100% correct that you do make twice as much and it's a fantastic career! I love it. Are you in nursing?
It sounds so simple but that would involve having to set the clock back and start all over with pre reqs. From the sounds of it he doesnt have the funds to even take those pre reqs at a community college. I'm pretty sure that the undergrad science course are all expired by now so he can't even use them to apply to the nursing programs. It can be a very discouraging process.
I feel so sad for this young man. It brought tears to my eyes. Where are you now, James? Please let us know. As a mother of four adult children, it would be absolutely crushing if one of them was going through this. The thing about medical school is that you have to keep plowing through because of all the money invested along the way. Sometimes it does not end well. Don't judge this person. I am praying for James. Help him find a way, Lord! Give him hope and encouragement. (And our educational system is criminal.)
Actually it helped me feel better about myself, since that guy is really in a difficult position. That’s crushing debt and is honestly a tragedy of our modern society.
The school gave him three years to complete his third year. Sound like he wasn't improving, they can only try and help him so much. Sounds like he had a mental break down or something. At some point people become a lost cause and liability and you have to cut the cord. This is incredible rare in medical school because there is a great filter to get into the program (unless we are talking about Caribbean med schools, those are high way robbery taking anyone and everyone who will sign the dotted line even if they are grossly unprepared).
Exactly. All my college told me was "well, you're getting an English degree so you'll never find a job." WRONG. Come to find out there are A LOT of high paying professions in writing. They should know this and tell their students to help them take relevant classes.
C. Watson My school said the exact same thing. All my professors did was tell us that writers and English majors would never make more than mid 5 figures at best, and to be prepared to go for months without a paycheck. Even the counselors could only suggest dead end low paying jobs.
I hope Dave offered him free financial counseling to help him pay off this debt. Out of all of the callers, he needs to be taken under someone's wing. I am concerned for his mental health. He will really have to work hard to find happiness in any career he gets involved in because he may feel like a failure for not being a doctor. I know he said none of those classes he took in medical school will help him in other programs, but that's not necessarily true. Programs have it to where as along as your classes like Anatomy and Physiology/Medicinal Chemistry/Microbiology were taken in less than 10 years, you can transfer them into other programs.
Even if he gets into one of those mentioned career, it will take him a life time to pay off his debt. I am a nurse. It costs me $200,000 to get a nursing degree (international student). After tax and living expense, I saved like 1.5-2k a month. It would take me 12 years to pay off 200k. Luckily I don't have to pay anything. He owes 430k. It would take him at least 28 years to pay off his debt. He has to be thrifty for the rest of his life. He he's sick...boom money goes to medical bills. If he's perfectly healthy for the rest of his life, he can pay off his debt at the age of 62-64 or so. That's pretty much at the end of a person's life.
Even going into a 3-4 year engineering degree I was terrified at the prospect of failing and wasting all that time and money. And that is in the UK where I was borrowing paying 3k a year tuition (plus living costs 6-7k per year total) and the student load system is a lot less predatory. I cant imagine the stress American medical students have, spending all those years and getting into unfathomable debt with the prospect fo it all just ending at nothing.
As a current medical student this is my worst fear in life. My heart sank listening to him speak and realizing I am only a few bad exams away from his position. Poor soul.
I'm so glad I chose to attend a community college. I get everything for free, tuition, and books. I was accepted to Princeton but decided to opt-out and go to a CC after highschool. I will graduate in the Fall and will transfer to a State University that isn't as elite as Princeton but a great school none the less. They offered me a great scholarship that will cover my junior and senior year. This will result in me graduating we $0 debt. I did miss out on all the freshman parties tailgates but in the long run, saved me money. I know many of my friends that are already thousands of dollars in debt and I'm grateful I made the right decision.
That was just stupid. Princeton has the prestige, you can basically get a job anywhere based on going to Princeton and not only that you make better connections in a school like Princeton.
Consider 1 year nursing accelerated programs. He will have most of the prerequisites because he has a biology degree and medical school courses which include anatomy and physiology. Very doable.
He may have to retake them because most accelerated/nursing programs don't accept prerequisites thats been more than 10 years. Also accelerated programs cost almost the same as PA programs which will lead to even more debt.

There are a couple options, but Dave said himself that he isn’t well versed in the career opportunities for the medical field. In all honesty, though, I would have left the country. I’ve got no business being here after that.

@Brian Waller Well if you have a job in IT already you're doing objectively better than me lol. Trying to just get my foot in the door in IT but no one is telling me where I can improve and all my interviews I've gotten were bust. The end of this semester I will also have an associate's degree in computer technology with a focus on general networking. It was originally supposed to be an MCSA but my college dropped that starting this year and apparently they don't do a grandfathered in kind of program so I had to switch. Luckily the debt isn't too high yet and I know I will get it paid off but will be a whole lot easier with a career in IT.
@Brian Waller yea that's what I'm learning now. Starting to feel it would have been better money spent on education in something else. I still see all kinds of positions being posted but a lot of those positions are senior positions and I doubt i would pass their qualifications.
Well, the caller didn't pay half a million dollars from his own pockets, it was a loan, so technically he didn't flush anything down the drain. He can get his life back if the option of deserting to another country is still open.
@Brian Waller I won't pretend to know anything about the IT field, but if you don't mind me asking: if the field is so competitive, then why are you trying to get in when there are other fields that are struggling to find employees? Sure, it might be your passion, but that doesn't guarantee anything. Go where the money is.
Hey James and Dave, I am from the Lexington Kentucky area and I might be able to help with this. I have seen people do this in the past. So, Lexington has 2 VA facilities, while working for VA you qualify for Public Service Loan Forgiveness after you have made 120 payments from an "accepted" repayment plan. That means after working 10 years in the VA system (not as a doctor) you can have these loans forgiven. One accepted repayment plan is the income driven repayment plan. This will have him paying less than what the interest is occurring. After 10 Years your debt will have increased, so you will have paid nothing toward your actual loan balance, however you can have them forgiven. This is the route I would take. I know it is a little against Dave's teaching, but abnormal circumstance call for different options.

Hearing this mans story makes me so angry. Deliberately setting up a system where a certain percentage of Med students have to fail, and at the same time leaving that certain percentage in a half a million debt. What pragmatically sadistic freaks run universities (especially Medical and Law schools). I hope they collapse under their own greed and weight!
It's just shocking to me that a university would let a student get THAT far into the program before stopping them. Letting someone go a half a million dollars into debt for nothing is criminal. They should have told him along the way to change course.
for a bank, debts equals their capital my friend. there have to be people in massive debts or there is no money to be made. this is basically the fate of ALL who fail college degrees. and the further you deepen yourself into any study, the worse it gets. welcome to the world. and especially America, where the debts go beyond human. so the loaning industry can keep profiting.

I have all the sympathy in the world for this man. You cannot imagine what this pain feels like unless you've been through it. They should make a rule that if you don't complete your degree for these expensive programs, your debt is erased.
I don't think that would be a good idea. It punishes the ones who passed. Really, I think universities are charging way too much to begin with and letting students continue to get loans at insame amounts. There should be a limit.
I’ve seen this happen to a few people in my Med school class. Two of them went thru 2- 2 1/2 years of school unable to pass boards. They were both told they had an undiagnosed learning disability. The third had a test anxiety thing. I also know someone who worked as a doctor for 5 years and good not pass board certification. She had to resign. She can no longer practice as an MD. She has a decent job with a pharmaceutical company but misses practicing medicine. Boards are taken after M2 year, M4 year and in residency and if you do a fellowship. Boards are standardized tests unlike most course work exams in med school. Don’t judge this person too harshly. Who would ever foresee this outcome? Until you’ve been through it you’ve no idea the intensity or demand. He’s obviously smart or he would never have gotten into med school.
And then we import a bunch of foreign doctors, and I know there is no way that most of the foreign doctors I've seen practicing in the U.S. are smart enough to ever pass U.S. medical boards.
What’s alot of money? 100k? 120k? If it ain’t 150+ this guy is going to have serious trouble paying that off even with a 100k salary. 400k in students loans!! With INTEREST!! Insane
I looked up the average salary, and google tells me it's $122k. This is the only reasonable suggestion I see in the comments. There's no way he'd be able to pay back his loans with a nursing degree like many are suggesting.
My heart just sank. I’m so sorry this has been a road block for him. I have test anxiety and it took me some time to pass my state boards in nursing. I had to see therapy for my failures as it lowered my self confidence and identity, but was able to make it through and passed! I knew the material, but kept second guessing. It’s embarrassing to explain to families why he didn’t make it as a doctor, yet facing the logistics of all these debt and fin dung a new path. I feel you, man.
Agreed. Get into a PA or nursing program. I would move back in with parents or a relative if you have to while you're in school. Also, find a good therapist for mental health as you cope with this major transition.
I couldnt see taking on more debt when he already has 430k unless the job were going to pay well over 150k. He needs to try b2b sales of medical equipment or pharm.
Cyrell Roberson easier said than done but it’s a good idea. I hope he finds his feet because this situation is one whole frustrating mess. But this won’t prevent me from applying to medical school lol I’m going in there and coming out as a doctor by the Grace of God... I really wish to know his present situation now and what he decided on pursuing moving forward
Lilly Cham I don’t. The guy took out enormous amounts of loan money and then didn’t work hard enough to complete his degree. He has no one to blame but himself.
I’m so sorry! I can hear his pain! You got into medical school so you’re smart! Don’t give up my friend! Stay positive😘 isn’t there an acceleration program for nursing? That can be done within 1.5 years. No?
Bridgett Bolden You are absolutely correct! Hopefully the caller knows this. Or if he just wants to stick with his BScN, he can work like there’s no tomorrow (6am- 2pm, 4pm-12am Monday to Friday, 9am to 9pm Saturday and Sunday at a hospital) and pay off those loans fast. You can make ALOT of $$ in nursing by temporarily overworking yourself. Have a wonderful day Bridgett😀

You got this. Signed, An RN who retired completely burned-out and spent.
Income sensitivity repayment for 10 years, paying next to nothing, and after 10 years as a teacher (his current profession) his student loan debts are forgiven entirely.
Sallent almost nobody gets forgiveness under that. There are so many little caveats and if you have any unapproved breaks in employment or don’t hit all the requirements you have to start the 10 years all over. Only 2% of applicants for PSLF have gotten discharges for it.
i have been saying for years i wish Dave did where are they now call 2yrs later or 5 yrs later. Some of these calls are so scary that my anxiety is high for them and its not even my debt.
There's quite a few people in that boat. I knew a lot of people in my university who triple majored and double minored on top of that. They basically worked their rear ends off to maximize their chances of work after college. Few of them have been able to land jobs within their fields of study. Basically, if you didn't take something related to business, data analysis, or computer science; you're in for a pretty hard time landing work related to your field of study. But Universities tend to advertise every major program as if they are all equally marketable on your resume despite the fact that not all majors are equal. I walked away from my original fields of study when I found out that getting a job in any of them would entail paying for Masters and PhDs before I actually get to start seeing some career opportunities come from all the money and effort that would have to be invested. Hard Pass.
He fails out and you blame the "schooling system"? You want a doctor who can't even pass the classes because you "feel sorry for him"? Yes lets lower standards to zero so everyone wins. So stupid.
JUST TO BE ACCEPTED this guy had to be extremely intelligent I guarantee you he is NOT STUPID. People are so judgmental when they have no idea what it took him to even gain admission!!! He sounds like he got burnt out and deserved an academic leave and then a chance to try again.
This is a caller I straight up, emphasize with. It's one thing to dig yourself into credit or auto debt, but student loan debt is a whole different matter. You go to school in Hope's for a better career, but it could all fall apart & have all this debt & no credentials to show for it. I hope he can get his life around soon. Sincerely, Pharmacy school dropout
I am in physician assistant school right now. Majority of us will be graduating with a starting salary worth more than our tuition. I expect to pay off my school loans (less than 100k) in less than 3 years after graduating. I won’t even be 30 by that time. He can start PA school and work in primary care or military where he can participate in loan forgiveness or loan repayment plans. 30-40+ year olds in PA school are very common. Another option would be RN, although the scope of practice is very dissimilar.
May I ask you what you did to qualify to get into PA school? Just asking because I’m trying to figure out what I want to do and interested in that ultimate career, but would like to start off with something that can make me a decent income that would also help me qualify for PA school. Your experience with the process would be much appreciated.
I feel like most people don't realize it's not about being smart who you know is what can really help out. Not knowing anyone is going to make getting out of this really hard but it can be done. If enough research is done he'll find a job in his field that pays well and land it. Or hustle really hard to get out of it. Starting a RUclips channel and showing his journey wouldn't be a bad idea. People love an underdog.
MoonbearDiedHere Is it any surprise in Trump’s America? This looks like the new normal. His policies have gotten a lot of people like this caller in the mess they are in.
I hate the mentality that it's not "what you know but who you know". That is basically what drives nepotism and it disgusts me that people out there who are smart and who have merit and are willing to work hard are not chosen because people decide instead to hire their friends or family for a job. I've personally never had to ask a relative for a job (and I intend to keep it that way).
@@Spacemonkeymojo I can understand that but in a way and in certain industries there's more to it. Like if you are a freelancer if you go for work for different companies and whomever's hiring has heard good things about you they will be more inclined to work with you over someone who just seems good on paper. It can work in the opposite way too. If they've heard bad things about you , like if you're difficult to work with ( unless you're really famous usually ) your chances of being booked for work may go down dramatically. So really it goes deeper than friends and family. People like having pleasant people around. They can the atmosphere and when everyone is happy working it's a great thing.

Take an accelerated nursing program at a local community college. Work while taking classes. Then become a traveling nurse, they get paid twice as much! Living expenses are paid for & he gets to travel the world, while also knocking out his student loan debt. There's hope at the end of the tunnel!
Shinel Yes traveling nurses make very money.

Danielle Shank Schools are a business. Wolves in sheep’s clothing
The school gave him three years to complete his third year. Sound like he wasn't improving, they can only try and help him so much. Sounds like he had a mental break down or something. At some point people become a lost cause and liability and you have to cut the cord. This is incredible rare in medical school because there is a great filter to get into the program (unless we are talking about Caribbean
med schools, those are high way robbery taking anyone and everyone who will sign the dotted line even if they are grossly unprepared).
Exactly. All my college told me was "well, you're getting an English degree so you'll never find a job." WRONG. Come to find out there are A LOT of high paying professions in writing. They should know this and tell their students to help them take relevant classes.
@Kazuya I wouldn't say wisdom as much as I would say experience.

@Brian Waller Well if you have a job in IT already you're doing objectively better than me lol. Trying to just get my foot in the door in IT but no one is telling me where I can improve and all my interviews I've gotten were bust.
Joshua Webb Well said!!
This is a great option.
I really hope that he sees this if he wasn’t able to get the help he needed, thank you for writing
I was thinking the same thing when I heard his story. PSLF would be a great option.

I would love to hear an update on his situation. Praying for you brother! With God ALL things are possible for those who believe! 🙏🏽
