Love these videos too as a fellow kiwi because it is funny to hear how people interpret our accent in so many ways lol. It’s cool also how we have the same thoughts and opinions coming from a fellow kiwi’s perspective. Cracks me up watching these haha.
OOoof Some of those words sounded like they lived in the outback for 50 years and then got mauled by a dingo...The last dude sounded like Kermit trying an Ozzy accent.
I’m from Liverpool in the UK and I’ve always been pretty good at mimicking accents from all around the UK. I’ve lived in NZ for 14 of the last 20 years and I’ve never mastered doing a kiwi accent which is frustrating. I can say individual words and phrases and the odd sentence - I understand how all the vowels sound, but I can’t sustain the accent at all, find it very difficult to mimic unless I resort to a more Māori orientated accent. Definitely one of the hardest accents to learn
Amy is almost there, there are a couple words that don't sound quite right to my Kiwi ear eg. 'bird', 'Wellington', 'kitchen', but overall I think it's very good! But is Meryland really even in the ballpark? Yikes, that was so painful to listen to, SO nasal and over-the-top! Maybe she is confusing the Kiwi accent with the nasal 'Valley girl' accent? 2 out of 5 is a very generous score there lol. Ed was really bad too, while Kelly was very patchy and missed more words than she nailed. It's a pretty hard accent for other English speakers to get right, I think.
Amy definitely got closer! I can tell there's a distinct difference between Aussie and NZ accents -- but I've actually spent time in both countries along the way. As an American, I definitely find the Aussie accent easier; it's not as tight on the palate as the NZ accent is, so it doesn't require as much of a shift for me. That said, I can do both, but the NZ accent takes a lot more practice.
I think Maryland is confusing the Aussie/Kiwi accent. She's no Lyn of Tawa I picked up the funny guy is saying "yeah whatsup guys, yeah nah I was just at the park just chilling, wanna go down the pub/park play some footy" then he started mumbling too much. It sounded like he picked it up from bro town but not quite. He has the slang pretty well.

it's like... all those who try the kiwi accent either slip to different accents or grossly overdo it when compared to an actual New Zealander.
As someone who has been living in Brisbane for the last 7 months, the Meryland sounds like she's from Australia not NZ. Kelly sounds like she's reading the news way back, when they did the more british accent on TV.
Moved to NZ when 17 from Asia, learned english on RUclips by watching too much of SCOTTISH and northern english folks raging at football. My accent's all over the place now, mix of northern english, scottish, irish, american, NZ, aussie, native chinese singapore intonation, idk man can't pronounce something properly now. Moved to late to have more NZ accent, moved too early to have my own non-confusing accent
First one is actually really good, she sometimes sounds aussie than kiwi but not bad. I'd love to know where second one is getting her information from? To me she sounds more aussie than kiwi and sometimes neither. 3rd guy is very bad, same with the 4th. Surprisingly I've heard someone actually talk like first voice the last guy did haha.
For me, the woman who says she's an accent coach is baffling. How can someone so far off be making money coaching something she absolutely can't do? Blind leading the blind.
@@newzealandstories5621 She did do better than the guy before her. I actually meant to say I'd love to know where the 3rd and 4th is getting their information from? I feel like the people they get from NZ to learn from are the non typical accent ones, people from movies/t.v shows or other translators.
Her pitch varies more than our laconic utterances, including her being just a bit too enthused. If I met her I'd think she was a real eastate agent or similar, like someone at the door wanting to sell me something.
accent-teaching videos are pretty weird... surely the only way to reproduce the right vowel sounds is to mimic _native_ speakers with optional help from the IPA? a vibes-based approach to accents can get at a lot of under-documented features but as we can see also leads to all sorts of made-up shit like X accent supposedly being laid-back or nasal or 'back of the mouth'
Yeah, it does seem odd to me that you'd pay money to train in an accent from someone who is more or less saying, "trust me bro!" The first thing I'd look for in an accent coach would be to see if they can convince native speakers with their version of the accent.
the last one is very funny - it sounds like he has heard Maori talking and trying to copy the accent - its quite funny - maybe he has been watching too many Taika Waitiki movies
Many of those last ones are people who have never actually spoken to anyone from New Zealand, looked at the IPA and went "yeah i'll give it a try" and absolutely fucking butchered it.
Does the 3rd guy believe Kiwi to be a dead language and is reconstructing how we sound from ancient texts? His "Don't forget your jandals" was ok, but really needs to speed up and make it more natural, rather than something akin to sounding out Proto-Indo-European. First lady did an impressive job!
The last guy sounds like he exclusively studied the nek minute guys accent lol
Found your channel a few days ago and as a kiwi myself I absolutely love these types of videos about the accent!!
Keep it up mate, subbed. :D
Awesome! Thank you!

The second lady sounds like she's doing Kath and Kim. 😂😂😂
Get this woman a man named Kel immediately
OOoof Some of those words sounded like they lived in the outback for 50 years and then got mauled by a dingo...The last dude sounded like Kermit trying an Ozzy accent.
Haha. That's a decent description of the last guy.
Second girl sounded like she was from the the american south or smth
😂😂😂 Yeeeeah. Weeee talk like theeeees 😢😂😂
Some people should just not try.
Okay, the last one is Korg from Thor Ragnarok. So basically, he's immitating Taika Waititi immitating an alien.
3:21 8:00 13:55 if this is what people think we sound like i would rather not be on the world map
last guy watched 1 ep of bro town and thought he could do it
the last guy sounds like sassy

Thanks. I do try.

the irish guy was a character, 10/10 attempt. he kinda sounds kinda like an overemphasised "chill" accent from like footrot flats or something lmao
That last guy sounded like he'd had a stroke lol
Meryland sounds more like she's from Brisbane than NZ lol

last dude turned into sassy the sasquatch 😂
Amy definitely got closer!

Damn I actually know loads of people who sound like that last due, he was honestly spot on! 😂
Well, it was, to quote the man himself, "flawless."
As someone who has been living in Brisbane for the last 7 months, the Meryland sounds like she's from Australia not NZ.
Kelly sounds like she's reading the news way back, when they did the more british accent on TV.
The nasal sound she's producing sounds like a California twang in a new Zealand accent. If she wasn't so nasalie I think it'd be very convincing lol.
Hahahaha ents, you got me there laughing... the second girl sounded soooooo weird

how do i do my own accent
That last guy can’t be serious. 😂😂😂

As soon as Meryland switched to kiwi I felt my skin crawling
How can it be both nasally and coming from the back of your throat?
Even New Zealanders can't speak in a New Zealand accent 😂😂😂😂
shut up
Her pitch varies more than our laconic utterances, including her being just a bit too enthused. If I met her I'd think she was a real eastate agent or similar, like someone at the door wanting to sell me something.
The first woman.
14:04 this guy sounds more like sassy the sasquatch
THATS WHAT I THOUGHT LMAO
I'm a Kiwi and I don't have a strange accent but the rest of the world does.
Not me as a kiwi watching this intently like I might be up some tips 😅
Just found your channel mate loving these videos as a fellow new Zealander. Laughed my ass off
churr bro thanks for the lesson I definitely was not born in nz
Ed sound like he's trying to do a saffa accent

As a kiwi i can confirm
the last one is very funny - it sounds like he has heard Maori talking and trying to copy the accent - its quite funny - maybe he has been watching too many Taika Waitiki movies
God I can't do a kiwi accent for life of me, I gotta blame all the American/British on the old Box TV.
Many of those last ones are people who have never actually spoken to anyone from New Zealand, looked at the IPA and went "yeah i'll give it a try" and absolutely fucking butchered it.
the last guy sounded like he was about to cry oh my god 😂. Mate if you're gonna make a video about anything you should at least write a script....
Kiwis don't have an accent.chur 😂
"the third murder" sounds like he talking in a scouse accent - no he hasn't got it either and trying to say Maori phrases like an englishman
Good luck hearing Kiwi in Auckland. Better try Hamilton.
