Wow, this is the same rubbish that WD has been doing for years. After basically losing a 1 TB WD drive because of a worn out built in USB 2.0 connector a couple of years ago I will stay away from that kind of design. Was now thinking about getting a Toshiba drive instead, but that won't happen now. Thanks for the information!
@@tiziocaio8657 I have one of these too. I've never dropped it, but the hard disk makes a rattling noise. It's like riding a train. this shit is garbage.
That's the reason of why I don't like those new "pre-made" portable hard drives. I took apart a 2014 Canvio Basics 1TB portable hard drive 4 years ago, but I was lucky to discover that it had a regular SATA hard drive (MQ01ABD100) and a SATA to USB bridge that is connected to the hard drive.
worth mentioning for the sake of anyone interested about data recovery, these actually are SATA drives with SATA controllers. They use an onboard USB to SATA controller and they don't give you any access to SATA. That said if the USB controller fails (and it will, oneday), you can actually remove it and solder to the test points to access the SATA interface. Its just super inconvenient..
@@philippehenry700 wouldn't call it do it yourself, or homemade, when professional data recovery companies frequently bypass controllers by soldering a heap of wires. In fact, i doubt most do it yourselfers would be able to do so with any success. Its more the task for someone proficient. If anything i would say while there are several professional approaches, there is no DIY path to data.
well crap... I'm glad I watched your video I was going to tear mine apart to throw in something else and....welp... now I guess I won't without a SATA port. Thanks for tearing apart your drive so I didn't have to man. Props for an informative vid with no bull.

Took it apart a few seconds before you on the video. Now I've got a half broken, scratched up chassis for my HDD! I have a 2TB one. Lucky my files seem still okay, although I did bend the USB connector quite hard at one point. I was like "Meh, not like I'll be using the _that_ connector anymore". Why do we/I do these stupid things?
Great video, thanks. Well my Toshiba Canvio 2TB drive just died. Sad that i just can't plug in a SATA. I think my next option is buy the same model and switch out the board (I saw a RUclips video of a guy soldering the pins on the USB connection and it worked, but I don't have that kind of find soldering gear). What do you think my chances are with the board swap?
appreciate this vid. was going to buy this since its 7200rpm over a seagate external which is 5400rpm...but i hate these proprietary designs in the event i want to repurpose the drive.... no toshiba or wd external drives for me
My toshiba canvio just stopped functioning after one year of usage and there was that burnt smell when I opened the case so I guess the USB connector is fried. Do you think there is a way to fix this or replace the connector ?
Hard to say, if it's like this drive, then I'm not sure about swapping just the plug as drive I ended up with in the enclosure was using a strange USB logic board rather than SATA adapter. If yours is the same way, you may be able to locate another Canvio and swap out the logic boards if you're desperate to get the data off.
@@ExplainYouaThing Well somehow I managed to remove the USB connector from the disk so now I technically have a SATA drive. I'm a bit surprised as on every video I watched the connector is soldered to the drive. It's a 2017 canvio model MQ01ABD100. I'm going to try this on an internal sata port.

Guys. quick question. I am plannig to buy this for my backup - However i notice some people said that if the connector is ruined, then u r screwed. My questions as follow: 1. how often is the USB connection fail in practice? 2. its almost already years since the video, wondering if your drive still running ok? 3. Isnt it with less 1 moving part be meaning with less 1 failure point to the device? 4.. looking back at this, do you still recommend the Toshiba Canvio?
If I only discovered this a year ago, before I bought my own to use it INSIDE of a PS4... Now it's hooked to the PS4 as an external drive and it keeps giving me al sorts of errors from time to time.
Theoretically, if you have one that matches the hardware of the drive and uses the same firmware. It's hit or miss but this is sometimes what data recovery companies do with damaged drives.
This USB design is bad, mine the USB connector not functioning or power on, I can't even use SATA to try to live up the HDD. Better stick with the external drive that using SATA like Seagate or even better SEAGATE GOFlex.
Yeah I think the worst part about this is the simple fact that you're exposing the actual drive's interface to the daily wear and tear of plugging and unplugging. That doesn't seem like a smart idea if someone is relying on this drive and were to drop it on the plug side.
In the case of this drive, not a lot. Unless the mechanical part of the drive itself is still in working order, there's not a lot to be done. If it's a matter of the drive no longer responding, there is a chance that the controller board is dead. That board is generally possible to replace providing you can find an identical drive and swap the board. This really is why data recovery companies ask quite a bit of money for their services.
After loading all my important files in to my toshiba hard drive, and deleting all of it from my phone to free some space. I when back to check everything on my hard drive, and do you what i see. Corrupted, M.A.N..... I almost commit suicide.... How do i solve this issue?
Now I'm disappointed, In this pandemic as a technician I'll do anything to help the students to survive this school year....I want to fix my old laptop AGAIN. I thought I can use my external hard drive.
I'm curious, does the included backup software help recover data on the external drive in case it failed? Or is it just a UI that automates the transfer process from pc to the drive?
