You have obviously never watched Wheeler Dealers. Ed China top tip “When removing the steering wheel, do not remove the nut fully. That way when you pull on the wheel you do not whack yourself in the face” 😂
Steering wheel removal. Leave the nut on a couple turns, brace knees up behind bottom of wheel and then a sharp tug on top of wheel and off she pops. The nut stops it smacking you in the face!
Liked and subscribed. Bought a td5 defender 90 and I have the death wobble. I’m a complete novice so will have to pay people to fix these things but glad to learn what it could be. Thanks. 👍👍
You going to need to take the steering arms off again, as the wobble is most likely the swivel housing preload is to light, results in the wobble. Regards to the steering wheel make sure the drop arm is in the centre first the adjust the wheel to that and your need to adjust the steering rod after that too
Hi Guys, Liam I would suggest when removing a steering wheel, undoing the retaining nut until it is FLUSH with the steering column (the bit it's attached to!!!) & only then unstick the steering wheel from the shaft (so you don't wear a steering wheel on your face; OUH PAINFUL), then you can remove the nut & steering wheel, job done!!! Liam lots of people call Land Rovers, CARS. I have no problem with that, whichever model it is (yes including 101 Defender, S1,2&3 & early Discos). I prefer the Discos (any & all) to the Defender, especially 3 to 5 & Sport! Don't let people make you call them Land Rovers when you want to call them cars, as they ARE cars (& lovely ones also). What happened to those rather nice spectacles you had for about one video? Keep up the good work. Byeee, Ian.
Put the steering wheel back to where it was and adjust the track arm to straighten it. The clock ring you mentioned under steering wheel is not adjustable.
I remember quite a while back we tried everything to solve a rear suspension problem on a Landrover County. It later turned out to be a worn A frame ball joint.
I'm talking to Gwyn right now about a feature video in fitting his weld on diff guards and full Sumo bar set uo just like you have. Really looking forward to getting that drop arm off.
for the death wobbles check your tyres for diameter as some tyres wear differently as they age regular rotation can help. Also you should get yourself a can of neverseez pure nickel antiseize compound and apply to anything with threads or tapers whenever you have them apart. you don't need much so a can will last until either you or your defender expires. this makes dissasembly much easier next time.
Hey. Firstly, you should note that there is a difference between a death wobble and a steering wobble. Death wobble is a steering shake that affects the entire car, the whole things shakes violently and you NEED to slow down to eliminate it. Called death wobble because it feels like you're about to crash and die! Steering wobble is where the steering wheel kind'a shakes a bit in your hand. Sometimes over bumps, sometimes on smooth road. They're not the same thing. Death wobble indicates a major suspension problem(bushes, loose joints, bearings(swivel) etc. Like the last reply said(Balh_) .. make sure you check the steering shaft too. Also check front shock bushes(will cause steering wobble). Personally, I'd just change front shocks too. But it's important for us to help you if we understand if you have a death wobble, or a steering wobble!
I’ve got 265/75/16 BFF KO2’s in my Land Cruiser and I’ve had them balanced three times. I’m fed up with them to be honest but I’m going to try Dyna Beads inside the tyres. Google them. They’re used in trucks to balance tyres. Apparently they’re a bit like lead shot.
Check the wheels for center buckles ..... had the same thing with my ninety and did all except the disco conversation.... even put heavy duty springs in .... turns out to be the wheels centers ...exact same wheel type of wheels as well modular.... I recon it’s to do with hard off-roading. Oh and I it fixed it ..... change your wheels out .... allloys are preferable (they don’t bend) Also some wheel balancing machines won’t show a center buckle
Your new drag link may need to be a different length since you changed the drop arm. Because of this the front wheels may not be aligned and need to be adjusted via the track rod. Check the distance between the front and back of the front wheels. If not the same you will certainly get tire wear and probably some wobble when road friction differs. Good luck.
Hi Stephen, you mean measure the distance between the front of the front wheels & then the distance between the rear of the front wheels & compare them, find what the Toe should be (+, 0 or -) & compare it to your measurements!!! OR...Take it to a tyre garage & have the Toe checked, would be a better idea!!!! I hope this helps you & anyone else. Regards, Ian.
Please please please take those polly bushes out. I work in a suspension garage. All that happens with polly bushes is that they become very hard and brittle over time and start squeaking and they brake and crack
Your hitting the wrong part, you need to hit the end of the track rod at the drop arm end and hit the control arm on the end at the wheel, thrash it with a 7 pound hammer it will come apart.
Are you gonna change the front shock absorber as well ? Because i changed them front and rear and it fixed the problem. The shock absorbers were 18 years old lol
Oh Jesus Christ, no no no no. Stay away from polyurethane bushes and definitely stay clear of anything britpart!! When it comes to suspension bushes the standard Land Rover ones are still the best.
Mark James Britpart is just a dealer and not the manufacturer. Just order OEM parts and not the cheapest one. Look for the G at the end of the part number!

Hadn't thought of that 😆
"take a hammer and just whack it". The simple solution to all Land Rover-related problems...
Steering wheel removal.
Leave the nut on a couple turns, brace knees up behind bottom of wheel and then a sharp tug on top of wheel and off she pops. The nut stops it smacking you in the face!
i got the same problem with my defender td5 '00, as you, i tried many things, the only one that fixed the wobble was a new power steering box.
Liked and subscribed. Bought a td5 defender 90 and I have the death wobble. I’m a complete novice so will have to pay people to fix these things but glad to learn what it could be. Thanks. 👍👍
Thanks for watching Jim! Hope you get the issue sorted.
TirsbaekTV balanced the wheels today which made a MASSIVE difference. Panhard rod and bushes next.
@@jimhailwood2873 Great! Balanced mine too recently and while it did help, something still ain't right...
Same here. Tyres and wheels like your v8 after the mechanical stuff. I’m learning a lot from your vids, thank you. I’ll bother you no more. 👍👍

Gillian St-Claire second that. Always leave the nut one torn, on the column tp prevent it decapitating you.
Had Terrafirma Shocks on a Range Rover and have found they snap quite easy. A few in our club have had similar issues.
Put the steering wheel back to where it was and adjust the track arm to straighten it. The clock ring you mentioned under steering wheel is not adjustable.
The standard drop arm ball joint can be replaced separately , it's kinda built into the drop arm but a rebuild kit is available.
Yes your right but it is far better with the conversion as now it just a simple track Rod end to replace
Have you tried adjusting the steering box?
Check the preload on your balls. Had the same problem as you, adjusted preloaded and all ok. Good luck!
Also try fitting a set of standard wheels and tyres to the front to see if that stops the wobble

Adjust drag link length to get the steering wheel straight

I’d check your swivel balls for play and front wheel bearings. Had this with mine and found play in the swivels and front wheel bearings.
Have you tried heating it up it helps a lot for defenders
Also the death wobble might be your front axle
All that's easy for me with minium tools

Have you checked the universal joints on the steering shaft?
Yep.
Hey great channel. Have you checked your swivels ive had this on a range rover classic i had. Keep up the good work fellas.
Check the bearings in your swivel housings and your wheel bearings for excessive movement, that can give you steering wobble for sure.
Great channel, really enjoy it! Have you you checked your swivels? The pre-load may well be set too light, creating your wobble....
Thanks! Not yet, but might do if it continues.
Replacing the wheel bearings sorted out the death wobble on my 90
Could be the steering box, or wheel bearings, steering arm universal joints or radius arm bushes..
Check the wheels for center buckles ..... had the same thing with my ninety and did all except the disco conversation.... even put heavy duty springs in .... turns out to be the wheels centers ...exact same wheel type of wheels as well modular.... I recon it’s to do with hard off-roading.

I have a 2009 puma and i have the same problem! It wobbles and if i want to show someone it is perfect and doesn’t wobble
I had Terrafirma Shocks and springs, got to say I found them to be no different to what I had on, bilstien dampers seems to be the gear to fit.
👍👍👍👍
Does the Laser Tool 6664 fit to a Discovery2's drop arm?
Welcome BAAAAACK

Can I install this kit without having to balance the wheel after?
Please please please take those polly bushes out. I work in a suspension garage. All that happens with polly bushes is that they become very hard and brittle over time and start squeaking and they brake and crack
If you watch all the way through you'll see we didn't go with those in the end.
@@TirsbaekTV thank goodness. Sadly Internet crashed out 10 minutes into the video. Only got internet back now😁
Vibration or steering wobble? If vibration check your engine and gearbox mounts.
Wobble.
@17:12 that lift arm isn’t even touching the chassis. The miracles continue....
Looks unsafe, I know, but I promise you that it will not fall off ;)
Sorry not track rod, Tie rod, works on track pod ends also.

agree ! steering box is the problem . and the heavy steering bar is a huge bullshit , it's a fuse !
We didn't use the polybushes.

mrcvry To be fair removing the original landy bushes is a horrid job 💀
