- Hey there! This is a project I have worked on for about four weeks and now it's finally finished.
The first half is a cover mostly done by ear and like Amen Chan's a jazz interpretation. The second part is taken from the orchestra version of Substitute Invasion. Besides that I mixed up several version of "Thanatos" by Shirō Sagisu / 鷺巣 詩郎 into this piece. I hope you enjoy!

This was the only scene in neon genesis Evangelion that made me cry, when Kaji spoke to Shinji as NERV was about to fall. I think such a figh shall never be replicated (except in 2.0)

This powerful soindtrack of NGE is something that prolly cure or worsen my depression. When this plays at that watermelon scene, I can't help bawling my eyes out. Thanatos literally means death in Greek. Very fitting considering how the piece gives this falling to oblivion vibe.

i feel the same about this song (and most of NGE, to be honest.) Worsens and cures depression all at once.
I’m not sure if neon Genesis will cure depression, but it sure does a great job at making you understand it. It does well by showing how depression is such a hard and long process to fix and that it eventually will happen and is worth it
Wow! Just wow! Most people play the second part of the song way too peppy when performing it on piano. This still has that virtuosity but keeps the tone even with the rest the piece making it overall much more whole and complete. Bravo, good sir! Bravo!

Quite clean fingerwork, something most pianists on youtube have none of and play songs like jelly. I very much like what you've done with the second part, I'll be uploading my version probably in a few months.

i listen to this all the time, this arrangement is just so beautiful. Every little thing added just feels so natural. I don't really practice piano too often but everytime I listen to this, it makes me wish I could play it.

This is a fantastic cover of once of my favorite soundtrack pieces. A few weeks ago I decided to learn this arrangement. Before now, I haven't learned more than a couple very simple arrangements for songs I enjoy, and my keyboard I've never truly learned to play has otherwise been collecting dust for the majority of the years that I've owned it. Playing this seemed like an impossible task when I started, but I've learned the first minute so far by following along with your video. It only gets more complicated from here, but I've greatly enjoyed the process thus far, and I'm stubborn enough to keep at it until I attain the skill to play the rest. Thank you for inspiring me to learn to play a full arrangement of a song my keyboard. After I finish learning this one, I will most likely follow along with some of your other arrangements as well.
I absolutely love your arrangements, they capture the feeling of the Evangelion OST perfectly. 10/10

Yes this is a noticeable improvement in sound. Again, excellent transcription, but I think you use too many 8ths. Instead of using so many 8ths, maybe try getting a little more creative with your chords or chord progression to get the emphasis instead of solely relying on doubling up on notes.
Not that 8ths are bad, but I feel that too many musicians, especially cover artists, get too comfortable around them because of how easy it is give a little more punch to the sound. I think it limits their creativity and slows their compositional growth.
Also, something nobody ever notices about this song is the message. Evangelion is all about contradiction, hence death and rebirth. Another cool example is the opening and ending songs. The opening is about facing reality, and the ending song is "Fly Me to the Moon", a sing about escapism and fantasy. This song is a single-song flagship for that message. The first half depressing and, almost exactly halfway through, flips over to bring inspirational or uplifting. Most covers I see is of people playing it sad and beautiful all the way through, and not cutting loose and having a little bit of fun in the second half like it was originally designed to have. This isn't criticism, just wanted to point point out a missing piece that I think you might find kind of neat.
Sorry if it sounds like a negative comment. I think this is the best piano cover on RUclips for Thanatos. But I also like seeing people improve.

But i think i should point out that i'm 17 (18 now) and started playing piano by ear at the age of about 14, so if you are looking for a professional performance i am not the person you're search for. Playing piano is still my hobby and not my job.
But i'd still like to improve which is why i am really thankful hearing feedback from a (probably) experienced musician.
I hope to see your tips and comments again.

Ok Bro. I have listened to Thanatos for few times and I learned how to play by ear from the orchestral version, because I have a problem with reading notes, I have no idea why, but the version I made by myself is almost the same as yours. You have a great ear sir. I think we all live in matrix😅

I´m a spanish speaker. First, I know now (reading comments) that he/she is only 17 yo...and then when I read my own praising his/her hands...make me feel like a creepy...then ´delightfult´ in spanish is "encantador" ( nice and sophisticated) I think it could be interpreted as "delicious"(?) ...just make me feel worse. Man whenever I listen to a song from an anime that I watched a long time ago I get emotional and I don’t know why maybe because the anime was so sad or heartbreaking and maybe that’s why but when it comes to neon genesis evangelion I don’t know what happens I get so sad.
