4:47 “They erased history from the history books..” I had a similar epiphany regarding slavery here in the USA. This led me to another stark realization: If this was erased so easily, then what else in the history books was also erased? Not only that, what else in there may not be entirely true? A lie printed in a history book over a century ago is still a LIE. My motto from now on is to question everything, use logic and reason, and pray to the Creator for Truth and the power of discernment.

I’m African Americans the difference in us in America is we really don’t care what they/people think of us because we create our own flavor good and bad but that’s why some hate us in the USA because so many other cultures like us. So talking about British history books and stuff, you're very right. I was taught in school about the transatlantic slave trade and that it was organised and run by Britain for the benefit of Britain. But this was a footnote in the class. I was taught almost nothing about the Caribbean (and forget even hearing about Haiti) and the lesson jumped straight to post-revolutionary US slavery. No mention of slavery in Brazil either. As far as the British involvement went, my lessons jumped from conception straight to Wilberforce. There was nothing on privateers and the connection between state-endorsed piracy and slavery, nothing about Britain in west Africa. Almost everything I know now has been self-taught.
Yes absolutely true,however the UK was the country that eventually decided that the international slave trade should be stopped,and forced the rest of the world to do the same...mainly from pragmatic and financial reasons rather than moral ones to be sure,but stop it they did.

Aida, some of us African Americans are beginning to learn and understand the history of our brothers and sisters from the Caribbean, Britain, France, Africa, and even Latin America. I have said many times to other African Americans during Black History Month to not just focus on our history in the U.S., because our people have history in other countries as well and we can't forget about them, their history and their struggles. We are still making history today, because there are many Africans in the Republic of China who are struggling too. Did you know that? Many countries in Africa have made deals with the Chinese government. China is slowly taking over Africa. I think as one people we should be concerned for all our peoples history and struggles around the world. Also, I think we should keep a close eye on China and what they are doing in Africa.
China is definitely taking over Africa. I have heard that they even have road signs in Chinese in some African countries now.

In the modern sense of the words, of course not. Black Americans are American Descendants of Slavery (ADOS). Unlike all the people in America (illegal immigrants included) ADOS have a unique history and a justice claim. I’ll end in response to your comment - If an ethnic group of people weren’t in America during the first two major wars - American Revolutionary War and American Civil War - then they are NOT seed Americans. Unlike tons of Africans who constantly leave Africa, ADOS (Native Black Americans/Foundational Black Americans) are Americans.

I was taught about the slave/trade triangle, as a child and how much of Britain's wealth was generated through The Slave Trade. I was taught about The Opium Wars and the East India Company's 'colonisation' of India. I was taught about the history of Ireland - Cromwell and The Potato Famine; Highland Clearances; the atrocious working conditions of the Industrial Revolution; the Tolpuddle martyrs and Peterloo massacre; and, basically, everything about what vicious bastards we were!
Perhaps, it was because my history teacher, for 5 years, was Irish? Ha!

At times, we were the good guys.
At times, we were the bad guys.
We ought not to eulogise about our historical decency, as if that reflects well upon us, nor should we flagellate ourselves for the evils we - as a nation - perpetrated.
There is evidence enough on both sides of the good guy/bad guy argument. What's done is done and can not be undone. That's history.
Going forward, I'd like to think that we, as a nation, could be as 'good' as we were, at our best, when ending the African slave trade and fighting against the Nazis.
I'd like us to be a force for good, 'whatever the cost may be' - to paraphrase Churchill. We paid billions, in today's money, to end the slave trade and billions, in today's money - losing an empire - to take a stand against Nazi Germany.
The here and now is 'our time'. A conscience costs money. Are we prepared to lose it all, again, to stand up for what is right? I have my doubts.

The British were the colonizers who came to this land, which was once called, Turtle Island, by the Indigenous peoples. These were the people conquered and enslaved, not the West Africans written about in our text books. We were taught early that America was discovered by, Christopher Columbus, a Spanish explorer, which was a lie...We speak English not Spanish, clearly proving we were conquered by the British. Our people did not write these textbooks, so our real history as a people of many complexions, hair textures, and complex societies was deliberately left out of our history books. This was how they indoctrinated us into believing we were inferior and second class. But in actuality we were once the dominate people of this land collaborating with African nations to build pyramids and highly structured societies.

Yes, I've been an Anglophile since I was seven years old. I wanted to learn about the What's, How's, Why's, Wheres, and Who's about the British Empire including the good and the bad, as long as I can remember. I read everything I could get my hands on to learn. My family members are avid reads, a place where the older children read to the younger and our weekly challenge is to finish books addition to our studies per week. We were told not to depend on our educational system to tell what we needed to know, as per my father.

Does that include the West Africa Squadron, which freed 150000 slaves, at the cost of 1857 lives? If we are going have a balanced view of history, shouldn't they get a mention?
The question posed should read: "Black Brits VS African Americans -- Who has done more to raise Black consciousness in the Diaspora". Another question one might ask is: "What percentage of Black Brits are involved in inter-racial dating of the Black-White kind compared to African Americans, and what does that say about the mentality of the participants?"

@don't care For the record, there is almost "3 million Black" British". Admittedly, still not a lot compared to the overall UK population. And there is about 44 million Black Americans--again not a lot compared to the US population of around 330 million. The questions posed are quite pertinent! The Pan African movement was founded in London around the turn of the 20th century by Black West Indians and Africans studying in the UK! Marcus Garvey came out of that movement. Around the same time the so called Niagara Movement in the US gave birth to the NAACP and WEB Du Bois. Fast forward to the Windrush generation which cane in shortly after World War II and the battles they fought against racism. Then during the 1960s and 1970s Black Britain keyed off of the Black Power movement in the US. According to 2011 UK Census (that is the last year of published numbers I am aware of) over 60% of Black Caribbean men, and over 50% of Black Caribbean women are engaged in inter racial relationship of the Black-White vintage. And over 90% of the children of such unions marry White. More recently, we see Black British actors making disparaging remarks about Black Americans yet and still want to play roles depicting important Black American figures like Martin Luther King and Harriet Tubman. The behavior of Black UK and Black Europeans in general cannot be compared to that of Black Americans who tend to be uncompromisingly militant. Most Black British and Black Europeans want to breed themselves out of existence by interbreeding with non Blacks! That is not the case with Black Americans. As a result, Black British and Black Europeans will undermine any Black movement in the diaspora because they are more interested in integrating with Whites as their paramount concern. I would never trust a Black British, Black European or Black African for that matter in any international movement for the Black Diaspora.
I had friends from England when I lived in Germany and they just wanted me to talk because they loved my accent.
I just came back from the UK and a drunk blk guy got on the tube & started talking racial rubbish ..... then he said "The queen is a German!" and some white guys yells "HEY!" like shut that nonsense up. So now I'm like uh oh.... so now it's our stop & we get off, the last thing I hear is a lady scream & I run back to see what happen & the guy is laid out on the ground struggling to get up. They literally threw him off the train. I was like "WOW!"
When it came to my clothes, I would say I fit in overthere.... I would get stares from other blk ppl like they were trying to figure out if I was a tourist or not. I stayed in Pimlico but I loved being in Brixton the most. I went to get a haircut at SLIDERS CUTS and they were very welcoming to us, I like to support blk business everywhere I travel. I told him the story on the tube & they were like "We can't talk about the queen like they do Trump in the states" HA
A random white guy asked me if I was from the states & I said Yes and when I said I was from Tx ... he was like "WOW , we love the Dallas Cowboys & Friday night lights the movie" & was so nice & even said "Can I get a picture?" he was like "This is what London is all about" & I was in shock because I didn't think we would recieve that in the UK. I usually don't have any problem meeting ppl when I travel but I just didn't get that vibe in London until that guy did that. Overall it was a great stay... I just wish I could have seen a football game LIVE while I was there, not American football.

As a Black American, I experience racism every day. It is very much in our face, especially now with our so-called President Donald Trump. I have heard of the British slave trade by watching Public Broadcasting Service series. When I was in high school we were taught about slavery, Rosa Park and Martin Luther King. They didn't want us to know about Malcolm X or the Black Panther Party. We have to search for our history just like Black British citizens. I applaud you for your efforts.
Black Americans are the most racist people in America
As a kid my grandmother was my world, she loved me and I idolised her. She was a midwife from the 1940s through to the turn of the millennium. She'd delivered so many babies that when we'd walk around the markets and shops in East London, where she worked, we'd regularly get stopped by women to hug and thank my grandmother for their baby, grandbaby or sometimes greatgrandbaby. Often being gifted bags of fruit or sweets by vendors. My gran would treat each women, when talking to them, with kindness and respect. She treated everyone like equals. However, when out of ear shot she'd warn me that such n such a person was "an immigrant/here illegally/criminals/dirty/uneducated/shouldn't have had kids/etc". Or she's said nice things like "they're a poor family but trying hard/love their kids/good people/bettering themselves/etc". It wasn't til my early tens that I realised she only said bad things about the women of colour (or Irish - they only white group she hated). When I asked her about this she'd reply with the usual "immigrants are destroying our country" BS often used by racists. So when I asked why she treated them nice to their face but rude behind their backs she said (paraphrasing cos I was like 10/11 at the time) "I'm a true Brit (she was Scottish but trying to be English middle class), we are never rude, especially in public. That's a low class trait. When I'm at work I represent the NHS and our Queen, who lost parts of her empire because of these ungrateful immigrants. At home I can be honest, so that you learn who is or isn't worth your time and friendship. I want better for you, those sorts can't give you better only worse."
That's my main understanding of British racism, it's secret so make us look more powerful and more benevolent than we (white Brits) actually are. And to keep the power dynamic in white folks favour.

I was taught from early age why streets were named the way they were and that the city and elsewhere made their dirty riches off the slave trade. I love the fact that a North African roman garrison was based on this island back in 3AD.

There is racism everywhere. However UK doesnt have widespread racism. When black G.Is came to UK during World War II we treated them so well they were inspired to go back home and join The Civil Rights Movement because in the words of one female worker who came here "they treated us royally". Black G.Is were looked after here. Plus we abolished slavery at a huge cost to Britons wealth and lives.

UK isnt racist. It exists in certain pockets like northern England in Bradford and similar areas between Pakistani Muslims and those they hate as a few are quite anti-white and they slaughtered a couple white teenagers. Thereal GodessIsis Nah I’m sorry but as a young African born in England who is still in school I can confirm from mine and probably many others experience that slave trade and black British history is not taught in most public schools, me myself have never had a British slave related history lessons in my life.
It was not in the curriculum at school, To study transatlantic slave trade, But their where snippets in school the stories of mark Twain that was it. My parents didn't either dig deep enough themselves. The last 10 years I have done my own research and horrified that a holocaust of slavery by Britain, Which we still feel the effects of colonial times black British people .

When I was at School in the 1970's we were taught about the the Atlantic slave trade in History CSE. What we were never taught though was the British Raj and Irish Famine etc.

I found out about British history at age 25! Thats when I learned that slavery is not black history, it’s the worlds history. When i started researching into black history that had been erased, I was mind blown! And I’m still learning.

I’m white and British in my 40s, growing up in schools black history was not even a consideration we learned about 1066 Harold got an arrow in the eye and about the Second World War, the realisation that a huge amount of history over 400 years that centrally involved the uk has been completely ignored is abhorrent to me, plus ancient black history of great kingdoms going back 6000 years or more including Egypt, Carthage, Yoruba, to name but a few as there are many has not been made common knowledge. Only in 2015 did we finish paying reparations through all our taxes for money borrowed from Nathan Mayer Rothschild and his brother-in-law Moses Montefiore, not to compensate the people that were enslaved but to their owners for their loss.
Wouldn't they be more inclined to tell their own country's story rather than that of another country's? I think most countries do that.

There are lots of racists who admire the art forms of black Americans. For example the late Lee Atwater was a republican political strategist who created the "southern strategy" where conservatives would appeal to white racism in political campaigns in order to win elections. Lee Atwater loved the blues and would hire famous blues musicians to play at parties and events.
It's still funny how we are taught that our history started at slavery but it untrue talking about the dynasties of Kush, Nubia, Kemet Sungi Empire
Those are more egyptians empires and they arent sub-saharan africans. African Americans come from sub-saharan ancestry. Examples of important Sub-saharan history would be the kingdom of edo (which had a wall 4x the size of the great wall of China, built before European influence) and Mansa Musa (Mali empire) :)

Comparing notes from a American view seems so weird. You said that you had to learn about it so later in life were in the USA we usually learn about that in elementary school. I'm feel so bad because we usually think that the Britain is so diverse and accepting but you realize that when your older you still have the same struggles because both countries were involved in the slave trade. Both tried to erase the history but we they completely got rid of most of it while the USA grow up with those early ideas. We all have remember that slavery in USA only ended 300 years ago, we have ancestors like great great grand parents that were slaves. If you want to add something more please comment, I would love to have more views on this topic.
Slavery in the US ended in 1865, get it right jello monster, the slave trade ended in 1807.

I call myself carribean British , not black British. Are Indians labelled as red. Are Chinese labelled as yellow. Are arabs labelled as beige. They,ve got different shades of brown and different shades of pink but no white or black.
Great video with some very true statements. Growing up in Britian we too never learnt anything other than Ancestoral enslavement or African American peace protesting. Which is such a small and targeted area of our history, very misleading and limiting to the growth of our generation.
We have since started to travel and learn first hand from communities aswell as seek more knowledge of black british presence and freedom fighting.

I will admit that I stand to learn so much more about black culture and history, in england we have a decent school system but we need to learn about all the different cultures we should stop forcing people to learn about religion because that's not the schools job instead we should replace it with learning about different cultures history and so on.

King James was Black, an Israelite as a matter of fact. The Jews kicked out of Spain and Portugal, were banished to the Portuguese colonies in West Africa were Black. Europe was ruled by Blacks during the Dark Ages, so our ancestors were there before slavery. Many of us fled as the white empire grew strong and began to conquer Europe. We fled into different parts of Africa and Asia, while some stayed in Europe and were enslaved.

The triangular trade that started in the 17th century where Britain took slaves from East Africa, was a big part history when I was at school. Ive seen it on the modern GCSE history curriculum too. So its definitely covered. 'The first leg of the triangular trade began in Europe, from which manufactured goods such as metals, brass dishes, knives, tools, textiles, firearms, ammunition, and alcoholic beverages were transported by ship to ports on the coast of western Africa. There these goods were exchanged for enslaved people,The second stage of this triangular trade was the shipment of enslaved people westward across the Atlantic Ocean, usually to Brazil or the West Indies. The third leg of the triangle also involved a distinct role for Britain’s North American colonies, which sent raw materials to Europe, where they supplied manufacturing industries.' I remember there was lot about William Wilberforce and the anti slavery campaigners. This part sounded a bit contrite to me. But obviously there had to be mention of the slave trade, for there to be a section on what William Wilberforce and the rest were campaigning about. Slavery from Africa was definitely not written out of British history. There is only so much you can learn about in history at school due to time restrictions. So obviously the main issues that changed Britians history get priority. It Its worrying that Black British people think about their history through the experiences of American Americans, as its obviously very different.
. There are hundreds of thousands of black Brits who have a deep knowledge of our history. I have taken kids to the slave museum in Liverpool on several occasions and every time they talk about what they learned for months . There is evidence of black history in the U.K. everywhere if you are interested to find out. There are 5 museums in the U.K. that focus on Slavery, colonialism and imperialism and the contributions of black people to the U.K. and numerous exhibitions at various times of the year. There is an exhibition right now where I live and my Mom was recently interviewed about her experiences of coming to the U.K. as a teenager and what life was like. Many black teachers and support staff fought to have black history month on the curriculum, I know because I was one of them. Schools now incorporate the contributions of black people as part of the curriculum. Of course it’s not perfect and there is lots of room to improve but many black people have worked tirelessly to get where we are now.

This. And truthfully growing up only two white people were racist around me. I'm white. So trust me when I say white people arent even thinking about black people like that. Maybe black people think about race more but they honestly dont need to. I personally think this is more a Gen Z thing. I grew up in the 80s-2010 and race really wasnt an issue amongst my black peers. We were too busy getting along. I dont understand this new race obsession with Gen Z except that its American influenced due to social media and it's set us back 40 years by making people accuse white people of being racist when they arent.
The lack of literature involving British slave trade pushed in schools EARLY may NOT BE A NEGATIVE. Here in 🇺🇸 ALL we are taught is that WE are/come from products of SLAVERY and (with a much more robust history and culture prior to bondage) IT HAS IN TURN GIVEN BLACK AMERICANS AN INFERIORITY COMPLEX THAT HAS BEEN PASSED ON THROUGH GENERATIONS. Which has played a LARGE PART in our EVOLUTION of CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT as a PEOPLE or lack thereof.
In America there was a "black" president, Secretaries of states, and generals. I don't know anything like that in Britain.

I am white and you can tell that African Americans are mixed African ethnicity with a small percentage of native Americans and European DNA, they look different from Africans who come from specific regions. I was Finding your Roots and so many African Americans were not 100 percent African, you can tell.
African Americans have more cultural ties to the Americas/their own culture than they do with Africa because most don't even know where their families came from. I think these are major differences that can affect a sense of identity.

I’m Black and British and I’m still young and I learned about most of this in school actually all the relations Britain had with the slave trade and they was a huge part so maybe some things have changed

So, this means that every black American is different- If you compare a black person from the South like Mississippi or Alabama to someone from California or New York- you’ll see that culturally they’re different! How did not knowing about the British slave trade until you were an adult effect you as a black woman? In America the history of the American slave trade is taught to us in elementary school and it never goes away. I always felt it hindered African Americans because it kept the ideology alive and relevant.
Maybe they didn’t teach you this at your school. Maybe you weren’t listening. I don’t know. I went to school in east London in the late 70s. My history class went through it when I was 12 as we stormed first through the history of the world then the history of Britain. We went through it again, in greater detail at 14.
I remember the autobiography of Malcolm X being available in the school library and reading ‘Why we can’t wait’ at the age of 15. Maybe things changed after Margaret Thatcher got into and stayed in power.

i learnt what happend in the slave trade when i was 14 we did weeks of it and i remember because i cried in class when hearing what we did and the other countries and people! so i really dont know why you think we dont mention it? il never forget :(
