Stupid question but, drop tanks, what happens after they drop? Just hope it doesn’t hit a building or something? And I assume they are just scattered everywhere at this point. Right?
Same thing I've always wanted to know..I can only assume they drop the tanks in a safe unoccupied area..the ocean or something..but what in the heat of battle? And u need to get rid of the extra drag?
In WWII, the drop tanks were pretty light. An empty gas can was probably the least worrysome thing falling out of the sky at the time. With the advent of mid-air refueling, there would be no need to drop a tank except in actual combat.
In peacetime you wouldn't typically drop them at all, in combat you've got more important things to worry about than what they may hit. Theres plenty of them in SEA that have been recovered by the local population and repurposed as canoes, troughs pontoons and god knows what else.
It's always funny that these American programs are put above other programs. Did you ever hear of the Canadian AVRO Arrow. It out classed every US built fighter but Canada was pressured by US to give up the program since it would out compete any US air craft and maybe take away manufacturing jobs. It was the only jet at the time that accelerated and could break mach at a vertical climb at the time. The engine was called Iroquis developed in Canada and it was a delta wing aircraft. When the Arrow program was stopped because of US pressure, all those engineers and smart people went south to NASA, BOEING for work etc. I guess US got what they wanted. In return we were given ground to missiles, what a joke.
@critter // I agree. I would say the Golden Rule applied. The Country spending MORE of the gold makes the rules. WE DID NOT WANT FIGHTER COMPETITION. That said: * The U.S had the three legged stool: Long Range Bombers; Boomer, Polaris Submarines; AND Silo Minutemen ICBMs. * US Bureau of Standards. * Army-Airforce to Air Force to NASA * Satellite & Space Programs * Lawrence Livermore Laboratory * White Sands Missile Range * JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory founded in NINETEEN HUNDRED THIRTY SIX !!! (by Cal Tech). * WWI to Boeing to 1930s U.S. Air Mail Service (also parts of Canada). * Manhattan Project. * LEND-LEASE. * NATO costs. * UNITED NATIONS costs. *** Canadians fought valiantly on D-DAY; Love & Care for their Country; & amazing Hockey players. They are good Academics; but, when it comes to THRUST, EXPENSE, DIRECTION, & CONTROL, 'MERICA WAS GONNA RUN THE MILITARY SHOW !!!
The 104 "beat" the competition for European contracts, by being "clearly superior"... sure... it had nothing at all to do with Lockheed's chequebook...

I still love the century series fighters, they were limited but looked so cool.
Conventional landing gear is the taildragger dedign. Tricycle gear is tricycle gear.
What's is the twin engine fighter at time stamp 12:07? Do you have a video on it?
McDonnell F-101 Voodoo

The laws of gravity and aerodynamics govern that impact point.

In Vietnam the indigenous turned them in boats.

BAC TSR-2 is another example.

Because America is Canada's defense. So we say what goes.
@seanchang1202
The thing is, the TSR-2 was beaten in every single way by the F-111
