Eli used to sing with a metal tribute band.... and Layne was originally a baritone but took over vocal percussion when Scott Porter left to persue an acting career. (He can be seen featured in Halo theme). Voiceplay have a brilliant sense of humour too and show it in their Disney medleys. Geoff also does a brilliant tongue in cheek version of way down by Elvis ... with choreography 😅... another fun fact is that Geoff arranged Home Free's cover of Elvira... Rob also features in their top 10 movie themes.... for a side aching chuckle perhaps check out Road trip by Voiceplay.... it's an oldie with members that are no longer part of the group... lots of fun and very relatable. 😊.

As background info on this particular video, J None left VoicePlay in 2021 to sing for the US Navy, so his rap being about fighting and 'ops', etc. is especially apt as is him walking into the 'longhouse' from a separate location at first. He comes back regularly to sing with VoicePlay when he can get leave, but he is considered 'featured' because he is not currently a VoicePlay member. Many of us hope he will return permanently after his tour of duty is done. Note that when J walks in, that creaky door noise and close is all done by Layne's voice.
J None also raps in their cover of "Superstition". Both raps were written for VoicePlay by Alfredo Austin (as credited in the description). Surprisingly, VoicePlay has used rap in other videos, too - done by Layne and one with mostly Eli (a cover from Hamilton, "My Shot"), but with bits by all of them as well as singing.
And since you commented on the 'CGI' backgrounds, I'll let you know that they were actually done by Eli in a game design software called Unreal Engine. This particular video was also unusual in that it was filmed in a different production house than they usually use. This was filmed at 'Vu' which has giant LED screen walls so the background is projected at time of filming instead of green screened. Usually, VoicePlay films at PattyCake Productions, which is co-owned by Layne and Tony Wakim (a past VP member, who decided he preferred to be behind the scenes. He was the baritone before J None, who was before Cesar. He was also the shadowed figure in "HellFire"). And while video editing is often done by whomever does the arrangement for the song (Geoff or Layne), I'm pretty sure this one was Eli.

    • @ronsbrat525
      @ronsbrat525 8 месяцев назад +5

This one was Layne. Eli (pronounced like jelly) found and set up with Vü Studios the background.
Also. The AC broke down that day so they were filming all day in those heavy hot costumes. But being the Vikings they are forged on.
This is the sequel to their Viking video "My Mother Told Me" they did a little over a year ago.
Same characters and costumes. Except.... Cesar is in place of Jose Rosario Jr. He is wearing Jose's costume and Geoff's top. So Geoff is wearing the fur he had on his shoulder as a top.
You can see Jose in their videos... "My Mother Told Me", "Hoist The Colours" and "Drunken Sailor".

Thanks for another great reaction to Voice Play! Yes, you are right about Voice Play having more of a theatrical approach to acapella music whereas Home Free is more of a Country/Folk style (both very innovative from the traditional acapella music we have heard in the past and both groups are good friends supporting each other despite their differences). J None was a former Voice Play member that left to join the Navy but is still very close with the rest of the members and frequently is a featured guest when he is on military leave-- for more rapping from J None check out Voice Play's "Superstition".

All the backgrounds scenery in this video was made by Eli with a software called, if I'm not mistaken, "Unreal Engine" or something of the like. Then they went to a different studio (not Pattycake Productions, this time), which had full wall LED screens they projected the backgrounds through. Even the big, wooden, creaking door J None uses to "come into the hall and join the others" never existed... Nor creaked (it was Layne who made that sound, but don't ask me how! 😅). The problem has been that the AC broke, and they were wearing full furs and leather Viking stuff with 100° or so 😱...
In this song, Geoff hits THREE times a B0, which is the third key of a full 88 keys piano. 😁
Liked your reaction, I knew you'd love this one. 🙂
Now I lay back and wait for "Nothing else matters" 😁
    See you next time!

I think it's been commented before, but VoicePlay takes a few more liberties with post production because they're not a touring group. (they used to, but the global pandemic stopped them going forward.) They don't have to worry about having to reproduce some of the notes/sounds with a live audience. Fun note on this video, Eli produced the background on Unreal Engine (he also did it with their My Mother Told Me), so you're not far off on the CGI comment.
Another great group to get into is the Bass Gang. They just did a series of Disney songs, but do a lot of different genres too.

Valhalla Calling was written and first performed by a man who goes by Miracle of Sound. His first video was solo, but then he did a couple more versions; first with Peyton Parrish, then with Peyton Parrish and Eric Hollaway (be ready for an earthquake deep voice with Eric). Payton Parrish has done a solo version himself. MiS loved VoicePlay's version of his piece and gave it 10 out of 10 raised ale horns. There are several versions out there-first his ORIGINAL original, with just him. Awesome group and you will be mind blown next year with their Halloween offerings.
Plus, they do things like Boy Bands in 5 Minutes and Queen in 5 Minutes compilations that are different equally enjoyable.
BTW, sometimes their outros have bonus material so it's worth letting it play in the background so you can possibly catch it, too.
For anyone unfamiliar with their stuff, the sense of dry humor shoes in the captions they include which sometimes have fun asides, so watch those on your own with subtitles included.

I've always thought of Home Free as more traditional, though in a great way, and VoicePlay as more edgy. And of course, many of VP's & Geoff's more recent videos are literally movie musicals in miniature. They just suck you right in.

This is considered a follow up song to my mother told me. There is a reactor peter barber who is Bass singer. reactor and primarily does opera. He has an interview With Geoff on His Flavors of bass interview that was done 4 months ago. Actually A good number of voice play members have worked for Disney. home free also has Avi Kaplan of pentatonix's Singing with them on ring of fire. I don't know if you seen the butts Remix by home free but layne did the arranging for that one. Voice play has a video with Attendees of An acapella camp. A reactor named Qofy Has an interview with J. None. All 3 of the a cappella groups have phenomenal singers. For a change of pace listen to teo country singers try to sing opera. It is Rob and Austin from home free. They are singing Nessun Dorma from Puccini's opera Torandot. The piece Is considered one of the best known tenor arias in all of opera. Luciano Pavarotti Is considered The person who sings the aria the best.

Voice play is very serious in how little they take themselves seriously (see Oogie Boogie or Friends on the Other Side or any other Disney stuff). OTOH they aren't so strict as to limit themselves to just a capella. I see you already reacted to Nothing else matters, so you know what I mean.

As I understand it Tim taught Geoff the growl technique and then Geoff went to other subharmonic singers to learn the actual subharmonic technique. I'm sure that's what he's said. Oh and just so you know, Eli's name is not said as eel-eye, it's pronounced as ellie, rhymes with jelly, as it's short for Eliezer.

I may use some layering effects, but I doubt in my own opinion that any of their voices are autotuned. Need to go down the voice, play rabbit hole, some more and realize that everyone of these gentlemen has an unbelievable voice, and doesn’t need anything autotuned to improve it.

I can't be the only one to know that high section Eli was doing was painful; that's a good way to damage your vocal cords. It's not worth having surgery or permanent damage; he's way too talented to risk it.

Reminds me of the 80s rock where that style was quite popular. Long as they are getting checked out and take it easy when they aren't making music he should be good to take it to those next levels. All about the training
