What's the difference? Semantics. His "clutter" gave his father some red eyes. Clean clutter? It pollutes the body, mind, and spirit. It's filth. It comes from a bad place, and keeps you in a bad place. It's filth.

Disgusting
Honestly, “I might need this later” and “this has some sort of value” are very common sentiments that lead to hoarding. I’ll get lost in it like my mom (genetics, baby!!) unless I swallow my anxiety and just throw away the damn trash I absolutely don’t need, and never will need. It’s *so* easy to get sucked in, especially if you have a mental illness like depression or OCD.
I have this problem too, and just went through a depressive state. I'm just now starting to pull out of it and slowly let go of things, I have plans to have a full house cleaning day in the next week or so (before I resort to pros). Maybe I'll film it so Charlie can watch lol.
I have OCD, and I'm not exactly a hoarder (actually my OCD makes me compulsively clean and organize things so my house is really clean) but I still have all these boxes full of empty pill bottles and useless shit that I can't stand to throw away. There have been times when I was very depressed that it did become a huge mess.
You sure it's genetics? Sounds more likely to be from environmental factors, i.e. you (presumably) grew up with your mum through your childhood and so adopted some of her traits. Could be wrong though.
As someone who lives with two hoarders, this is a very real issue and shouldn't be treated as a joke. A hoarder finally getting to the point where they start to clean is AMAZING, I'm extremely happy for this person.

I cleaned a hoarders house before with one other person. Garbage is the easiest shit to clean. Pet damage is another story… We cleaned a small room that was used by several cats for a decade as a litter box. The entire room. The biggest thing that surprised me was how many garbage bags you need to fill to get rid of everything. I lost track at 200 or so. Dumpster wasn’t an option due to street restrictions. The memory of it clean afterwards was a feeling I’ll never forget. Also my uncle’s house, which had floor to ceiling containers in his bedroom with my deceased aunt’s clothing. After we removed everything, he was surprised that a window existed in the room. Help a hoarder if you can. The pushback will be fierce but be kind and persistent and they’ll be so happy when it’s done.

Major emphasis on the "be kind and persistent" bc these hoarders are genuinely struggling to let you of their stuff. There's so many emotions coursing through them, they can often times get aggressive due to their fear. It's so hard for them to let go of everything but they will forever appreciate those who helped them overcome their struggles. Mental health matters ❤️
There's a Finnish youtuber named Aurikatariina who's a professional cleaner that shows her process for cleaning apartments like this. She even does some bad ones for free! I love her bc she's incredibly empathetic to her clients and focuses not on shaming them or making fun of the apartment, but on how fun it is for her to clean and how happy the client will be in their clean home :) I highly recommend her channel if Mr. Moist wants any more cleaning content that's closer to cleaning straight trash than cleaning a hoard of unopened items.
@@NotOnDrugs Many people who hoard have mental illness, and it's a big step for them to both admit they have a problem and ask for outside help. Many clients in Aurikatariina's videos suffered from some sort of debilitating injury or personal loss that led to severe depression, and cleaning just wasn't a priority for someone in that state. Once they started to receive treatment and their life circumstances improved, they realized how much their unhealthy environment also made their mental health suffer. It is very hard to be kind to those to create their own terrible states sometimes, but everyone is going through something. Nobody who is doing fantastic wants a space like the one in this video. There is almost always some deeper issue at play.
@@haleyb4023 my grandmother was a hoarder. Her house burnt down because she was a hoarder. It's not hard to throw the shit away. God, all these people with all these "illnesses" 🤣
@@NotOnDrugs I'm very sorry to hear that. The videos I'm talking about are usually not lifelong situations or ones like this, where some feels a compulsive need to buy a lot of things and hoard them. The situations I'm discussing are ones with clear indicators of mental distress with a clear starting point, where people are going through far bigger and overwhelming problems than cleaning their room, as silly as that may seem to someone who has good coping skills. Again, it is sometimes difficult to empathize with someone who created their own distressing situation, but it should be recognized that these people, both in this video and those featured on Aurikatariina's channel realized they had issues and couldn't tackle them alone. It can be very frightening for someone with a stigmatized issue to seek help even when they're ready to accept it, and I commend the clients in Aurikatariina's videos for doing so.
As someone who went through a phase like this brought on through depression, I really feel for these people. Yeah its funny and looking back on it I can laugh, but I totally sympathize with these people. Hope everyone who suffers from hording comes out of it. I still struggle some days but for the most part Im happy to say Im a bit of a clean freak now.
Yeah though the side effects of my depression dont lean heavily on this side i understand the feeling of being unable to get yourself to do something. And then when u have the strentgh to try the clutter is so much its discouraging. And THEN u just add even more to the clutter and the cycle continues. Congrats on u managing to recover and i hope things keep going well for u!
glad to hear you've recovered. there definitely needs to be more understanding for this as a symptom of mental illness. & enough of "well i've been depressed & i still didn't live in filth". if someone isn't happy with the way they're living but still has a hard time changing it, it's mental illness & people need to recognize that.

Also if you’re feeling judged by this, please know I’m not judging. My compulsive disorder almost killed me because I wouldn’t eat so I am in no place to judge anyone.
Lol my boyfriend tries to save EVERY paper bag and cardboard box! He's got so much stuff, it's crazy to me. I'm a minimalist, mostly due to my lifestyle. I have my makeup, my clothes, and my laptop pretty much. Those are the only things I really need. When I first moved into his apartment, I cleaned his whole kitchen for him. Had to throw away a whole bag of silverware that was in the sink hah. Unfortunately, he still has a lot of stuff, but it's not useless stuff either. He has a ton of tools, accessories for different devices and whatever other guy stuff he has. Problem is, we are building a TINY house right now, and I have no clue if he can truly part ways with a lot of it. He's not a certifiable hoarder, but he lets certain things pile up to the point it takes away from the serenity of the room, and he buys a lot of stuff. Our house is _really_ tiny, too lol. the trash is the kicker. cleaning gurus will tell you the first step you can do when overwhelmed that will make any room look 80% cleaner is to take the trash out of it. it's the least difficult step, one of the least boring, and yet you can wind up in such a situation mentally that even that is too taxing for a while. getting rid of the shame is a big first step. the world is actually pretty damn hard despite what your parents might have told you. it may very well be because you were hearing 'clean your room' while you were struggling with other major anxieties that is the same reason you actually feel more relief from NOT cleaning now. but it only works short term, and you might have figured that out. don't feel ashamed, but if you're miserable and tired of it, find someone you trust and confide in them, or tell someone on the internet, and think about something small you could do ASAP to make it better. here's a guide for quickly doing the bare minimum on any room. try doing 5-10 mins on just step 1: 1. get rid of all the obvious trash 2. collect laundry or dishes and put where they belong (don't do them) 3. starting with the largest flat surface, clear it off and wipe/dust/clean if needed -- put those items away 4. repeat on all flat surfaces 5. pick up everything off the floor 6. now put the items from #5 away you can dust and vacuum if you wanna be fancy about it. the key is that the largest amount of difference is made with the earliest, simplest steps. gl
thank you so much. i live in a household that's plagued by depression and as a result looks similar to this man's house. i'll try following what you said!
The milk wasn’t moldy. Mold looks different than that. The milk more likely grew Pseudomonas azotoformans (a bacteria) which over time will turn the milk first grey and then black. Other bacterias can also grow in their presence. That milk has become a biological weapon.
Due to this trend of messy rooms, I realized that my room was a mess and decided to give it a deep clean! I woke up in the morning to a clean floor and let me just say; If your room is dirty, clean it! Turn on some music, and just get to work. The satisfaction you'll feel afterwards is 100% worth it, I promise.
The brain receives endorphins from delayed satisfactions. That same feeling you get from drugs can be achieved by doing something long form. Do some push ups, crunches, go on a walk, read 50 pages of a good book, watch a movie in one sitting. I could keep going but I'd be wasting your time.
@@brandon9172 as someone who can use substances casually and recreationally I'd be a hypocrite to say you shouldn't do that. The older you are, the better. I'll be turning 27 soon and was a somewhat frequent pothead as early as 15 unfortunately. That's my only regret. You can do anything as long as you're moderate, disciplined, and responsible. Don't do things like Fentanyl, heroine, meth, opioids, or krokodil and you'll be fine.

@Disappointment I saw a hoarders episode. Where no joke, the dude had to live outside. His apartment was LITERALLY filled to the brim with shit it was so disgusting. No exaggeration, there was no 4 cubic inches in that place that the volume of your body could fit in. He slept on the bench outside- AND STILL HAD A BUNCH OF SHIT IN A WAGON WITH HIM.
That's not a hoarder though, a hoarder is someone who doesn't want to throw stuff away and items just collect in their houses until there is just too much. Dead animals and garbage isn't a hoarder, that's just lazy, most real hoarders houses are clean, just cluttered.
Please note: Hoarding is a serious mental illness and ties in with OCD. If you want to know what it's like, imagine every item, be it a piece of trash, an empty box or anything else, has the same sentimental value as a beloved childhood toy or maybe even a pet. Some hoarders feel a need to collect more stuff, while others just have trouble throwing things out. The reason people let it get bad isn't because they're lazy or stupid, it's because throwing things out causes real emotional distress.
@@Creepley not really this is just a dad and son shooting the breeze. In hoarders, it’s the therapist and cleaning people that are real shitty. I’m a “collector” and I know it feels but what I refuse to do is have anyone talk down to me about my “stuff” and mental health.

As a person with OCD, I’ve had issues with hoarding before. It’s a legitimate compulsion and it’s extremely hard to get rid of things. I held on to like 12 mini pringles cans for about two years and I only got rid of them when I couldn’t take them with me to college. I held on to water bottles, empty boxes, glass drinks, bottle tops, pill bottles, and a lot more. I was convinced that I would find a use for everything eventually. I never left dishes in my room thankfully. I still struggle with the urge, but I’m a lot better now. I did it even as a child. I would hide milkshakes and cups and plates under my bed to the point where I wasn’t allowed to eat in my room. It’s honestly a huge struggle when you get extremely distressed and panicky when trying to get rid of things. I feel so bad for people who have to struggle with hoarding involving food.

My sister did this for me for my birthday, I've been rough this year - people say you can't buy happiness and they're right, I work sporadically - ie when I want to because I work pretty much for the social/enjoyment/structural aspects of having a job, I don't need the money and won't ever. I volenteer for kids cancer charities and stuff since I can afford to be unpaid. But when I'm doing nothing I sorta fall apart. I made sure I got stuck in with cleaning my apartment with my sister (took us 7 hours) and honestly, I've been far better since and it was probs the best bday present of all time. It was less laziness, clearly, because I wouldn't have been up for it let alone helping PROPERLY when it was suggested, but sometimes you just stop giving a shit. You can now cross my room easily and my drum kit doesn't requiring folding (it's electric) to actually get into my room anymore, since we also restructured the layout.
To many people complaining about how someone could let it get that way, pretty simple, just depression, mental and/or physical issues. Personally depressive episodes are visible by my oral hygiene, then bedroom and then into the kitchen. At my worst these videos are pretty spot on, give me a good mental health day and it's clean in a matter of hours. These people just need support from friends and family. Some people such as myself sometimes even find comfort in the clutter. It all just screams the need for better mental health treatment honestly.
I do pest control, so I walk into dozens of random apts and houses every day. You would be amazed at how some people live. Last week was a very fancy lawyer lady who looked super put together, but her apt was so messy that once she got roaches, they took the place over, and there were maggots in her trash piles
Yeah, sometimes it's just mental stuff. I've got a friend who keeps great hygiene, nice clothes and is the kindest soul you'll ever see yet when I go over to his house, it looks like a garbage truck just exploded in his living room. He had bad depression at the time and it shows more with how nonchalantly filthy his house was. He'd just drop shit on the floor accidentally but not even try to pick it up unless it was extremely important (like his wallet and keys). Helped him clean up around the house a few years ago. Hope the lawyer lady gets some help mentally or does a thorough clean up at some point.

It's really easy to procrastinate and say "I'll get it later" and then let it go so far to the point it feels pointless to try to clean it yourself and then be too embarrassed to ask for help until you're eventually up to (sometimes literally) your neck in 2 year old fast food bags and wrappers and containers and dishes. I've seen fossilized mice in the bottom of some of the junk piles I've helped clean. Fossilized. Perfectly preserved from the moment of death.

So there are different stages, you could just have clutter and not a hoard. I think there are certain criteria having to do with how full the space is and how well you can use it for what it’s meant for. I think trash is part of defining it, but I’m not sure and haven’t looked it up in awhile. It’s good that you’re able to get the trash out! You’re saving yourself from a lot of health hazards in that regard :)
i wonder how many of these people don't actually have a hoarding problem, but really just have an issue with cleaning up. the longer you wait to do something the harder it becomes to start. I've had my room end up pretty abysmal at times after not cleaning for a few months but I wasn't keeping things for a reason, they just piled up.

@sinofcringe True, it's not a simple diagnosis, there's a bit of a spectrum and it's not all about the desire to keep things for whatever reason. It's also about the inability to take action to get rid of things, at the time or later when there's some build up, it can be "I'll get rid of this thing later", as opposed to "I need to keep this thing because xyz". You're right, overwhelm when things build up is a huge part of it, and that stress can actually increase particular reactions, so that need to keep things (or inability to get rid of something now) can sometimes seem to come out of nowhere and morph into weird things you would never have seen yourself doing. It's a combination of a lot of things, but yes, not all things are necessarily hoarding disorder but a result of other issues, but at the same time, they can also shift and become something more recognisably hoarding.
Advice for people with ADHD: Don’t put something down, put it away. I have ADHD, I put something down for a minute and completely forgot about it existing for about a week.
2:00 This is exactly the problem they have. Hoarders see value in literally everything. Every box is a containers to hold other things. Everything has some kind of value. They go in a pile or a box. The boxes stack well. It continues forever. Generally, what separates a collector from a hoarder is first, obviously, the level of compulsion, second the livability of the space. Collectors enjoy the items by virtue of intrinsic value and tend to keep collections organized. Hoarders compulsively hold onto everything as it holds potential and just accumulate. A pile of stuff doesn't bother a hoarder as the floor itself is valuable as a surface to place items. The livability of the space rarely gets talked about as a distinguishing factor but I think it is. A large collection moved from a spacious mansion to a small house becomes a mess. This doesn't help diagnose, but it does help one to understand themselves. Can you live in your space long-term without navigating piles? Does everything have a logical permanent place to be put? Are you willing to get rid of things to make room for something new? If the answer is "no" to any of those questions, then you may have a problem.

Not everyone who has a hoarding habit, goes back to their habits after they clean up. My place used to be reaaaally bad, debatably this bad. And I eventually cleaned it up. It gets a little messy every now again, and when I notice, I think "hell no, never again" and immediately clean up

It is about your mental health and physical capasity. Are you able to compansate or not? If you cant you would never be able to clean this up and behaviour will turn back when someone else cleans it.

I used to let crap pile in my house to the point it took like most of the day to clean up. Then I felt amazing having a clean house. Then after living with my ex, she was a bit crazy about cleaning and really whipped me into shape about cleaning regularly and I built up that habit. If you tidy up every day by throwing things away after a meal, doing the dishes every night, etc. it really makes it easier to keep the house nice. Then if you do the other stuff like vacuuming every other week, dusting once a month, cleaning the bathroom every other week, it makes everything much easier and faster because nothing ever gets that dirty. If you let dirt and dust pile on, it takes longer to clean it. Plus most women really dig a guy with a clean house.

It's not just depression. I'm like him but I'm lucky to live with a caring family who will constantly remind me to clean up and stuff. It's a little bit mixed with being a hoarder and avoidant (at least that's what I know from my own experience) and these two are disorders of their own rights.
As someone whose mother has hoarded things over the years, I feel for the people that are negativity impacted by the hoarding but aren't the people to blame. (Why she had three rugs and a whole roll of carpet in her junk room, I have no idea)
My paternal aunt who lives with my family is like this. She hoards useful/usable stuff, especially clothes. Boxes and bags of them. They may not be useful/usable to her personally, but she strongly feels the urge to save or preserve them under her care. If we try to forcibly remove them from her room or our porch and repackage them to be shipped away for charity etc and don't do it immediately, she will take them all back. Stuff or clothes we want to throw away but is still somewhat functional, she'll check one by one and "steal" them to be a part of her collection. Edit to add: She'll even go around the neighborhood to make connections with people and asks around for their unwanted clothes so she could maybe use them later or distribute them to other people she knows. She won't volunteer them up for charity or sell them, as she'd rather give them to us or people she knows. But most of those clothes and stuff, she'll keep for years on end.
@@MollyHJohns Yeah, my mother left a bunch of clothes at my house when she quit staying here that she couldn't even wear anymore but when I asked if she wanted me to do something with them she said she would give them to someone. Still in the closet though, granted I did nab a few a while back to use for baby quilts.
@@vanillathebard that's still manageable, just being in that one closet... My aunt's, her clothes already spilled out of her closet, and then there's the extra piles of boxes and bundles in her room and some more stuff she didn't yet want to sell at the porch outside just rusting under the weather changes... We didn't want to have a long term cold war with her so we didn't force through her room to seize them... But the other stuff we did call a dumping service truck to remove and she was still upset for days anyway lol. I almost wanted to pay her to remove her whole hoard just to make her feel she's rewarded for her years of effort, but I don't have enough money already after calling the truck over.

It's going to take a conscious effort, but throwing away trash when you're done with it (not throwing it on the floor) is a good start Rinse your dishes when you're done with them, out them in the dishwasher if you have one Those two things are little changes that have HUGE impacts
This genuinely makes me feel so much better about myself. I used to have a friend that was addicted to huffing air duster. His apartment was trashed so I offered to help him clean it. I removed 18 large Hefty bags full of empty duster cans alone, not counting the other trash and he barely helped me at all. He told me he almost got evicted the last time it got that bad, but he had a team of professional cleaners wearing full hazmat suits come in and clean, so his landlord ended up letting him stay.
There have been times when I was very depressed that it did become a huge mess.
one trick i use to clean is that if i cant think of an actual realistic use case for a thing in 5 seconds, its not important enough to keep.
You sure it's genetics? Sounds more likely to be from environmental factors, i.e. you (presumably) grew up with your mum through your childhood and so adopted some of her traits. Could be wrong though.

No they won't they'll get pissed off at you that you threw away the hardly working appliance they haven't used in 6 years
Major emphasis on the "be kind and persistent" bc these hoarders are genuinely struggling to let you of their stuff.
I love her bc she's incredibly empathetic to her clients and focuses not on shaming them or making fun of the apartment, but on how fun it is for her to clean and how happy the client will be in their clean home :)
I highly recommend her channel if Mr. Moist wants any more cleaning content that's closer to cleaning straight trash than cleaning a hoard of unopened items.

not sure how one could empathetic to someone who just hoards junk and trash. it's disgusting, and then some.

Good job for keeping your room clean! You can be proud of yourself, the first step is the most important one.
Once you start letting things stackup it's so easy to just add one more plate, or can to the pile
Ayo?
the trash is the kicker. cleaning gurus will tell you the first step you can do when overwhelmed that will make any room look 80% cleaner is to take the trash out of it. it's the least difficult step, one of the least boring, and yet you can wind up in such a situation mentally that even that is too taxing for a while.
getting rid of the shame is a big first step. the world is actually pretty damn hard despite what your parents might have told you. it may very well be because you were hearing 'clean your room' while you were struggling with other major anxieties that is the same reason you actually feel more relief from NOT cleaning now. but it only works short term, and you might have figured that out. don't feel ashamed, but if you're miserable and tired of it, find someone you trust and confide in them, or tell someone on the internet, and think about something small you could do ASAP to make it better. here's a guide for quickly doing the bare minimum on any room. try doing 5-10 mins on just step 1:
1. get rid of all the obvious trash
2. collect laundry or dishes and put where they belong (don't do them)
3. starting with the largest flat surface, clear it off and wipe/dust/clean if needed -- put those items away
4. repeat on all flat surfaces

Due to this trend of messy rooms, I realized that my room was a mess and decided to give it a deep clean! I woke up in the morning to a clean floor and let me just say;
If your room is dirty, clean it! Turn on some music, and just get to work. The satisfaction you'll feel afterwards is 100% worth it, I promise.
Truth.
The brain receives endorphins from delayed satisfactions. That same feeling you get from drugs can be achieved by doing something long form. Do some push ups, crunches, go on a walk, read 50 pages of a good book, watch a movie in one sitting. I could keep going but I'd be wasting your time.

Honestly his hoarding isn't as bad as other hoarders where they'd find dead animals amongst the rubbish, shit heaped toilets and god knows what else. Good thing they cleaned the place up before it got really out of control even if they did hire professionals
The real hoarding lies in his CSGO inventory
@Disappointment yup
Walking the green mile to save private Gump on a stranded island is my favorite movie.
Which is why I stopped watching Hoarders. I really disliked how the clients were being treated on there.
@@chocolatebunny3221 I agree. I also think this video is doing the same thing.

My life coach has told me that when a person neglects their living environment, it's most likely not because of "laziness", but instead because of having mental health problems or state of mind problems.
Exactly. I grew up w/ chores around the house being taken care of, and all my basic needs being met, so I never really had to worry about the everyday stuff.

I've helped my fair share of people clean up their goblin nests. I've seen much much worse than this.

Yo Fam I’m a small content creator, and I make a variety of entertaining reactions, vlogs, and a range Of other content and I’m still working on quality but I guarantee you will find something you will enjoyy🙏🏾🙏🏾‼

Glad they realized they have a problem and get proper help, clearing is definitely what you should do if you have hoarding tendencies

This is just depression on display is all. It's nothing appalling, it's just sad.
Depression is not an excuse to live like that they’re just feral human beings
not.... really? you can have a filthy apartment without being depressed y'know
L
@TheRealOneAkusik to an extent yes this is just being fucking feral you can’t really make excuses for it getting that bad
Walking the green mile to save private Gump on a stranded island is my favorite movie.

THE FACT THAT THAT POOR WOMEN HAD TO DO IT ALL IS HORRIBLE.
@Deadpoppin its so weird tht men are considered the funny ones when yall lack any type of originality.
As someone who has gone through periods of hoarding behavior, usually during depression, I have to say it feels so good when you have open floor space.
linda needa a fucking vacation after that.
i just started cleaning my house today. not finished, but it feels good to have at least a clean bedroom room.
i haven't been able to get my shit together ever since i got back from deployment 2020
Good luck with the cleaning! :)
I feel like I’m on my way to becoming a hoarder in adulthood and I really want to take some steps to keep it from getting this bad

It's going to take a conscious effort, but throwing away trash when you're done with it (not throwing it on the floor) is a good start
Rinse your dishes when you're done with them, out them in the dishwasher if you have one
Those two things are little changes that have HUGE impacts
How can someone not be to embarrassed to post this shit online.
My depression room has been here a few times
This genuinely makes me feel so much better about myself. I don’t feel so bad “making fun” of them because this literally used to be me and I’ve improved so much, looking back on other people who still live like this can only make me laugh. Anyone who is struggling with this, I believe in you man ! Life is tough but you can pull yourself out of whatever hole you’re in, there’s always something you can do to improve, please don’t forget that.

Sadly, he died about a year after the day I cleaned his place.

I work in a hotel and I’ve seen people leave their room like this after a 3 night stay so-
My room is kind of an organised mess but nowhere near as unsightly as this one.
So, knowing Anomoly, i'm genuinely willing to bet he let his room get this dirty on purpose to get views.

@DONT READ MY PROFILE PICTURE alr
It's partly denial. Steadily declining standards. Laziness
@@johnl5350 No. Its not laziness. Nor is it due to lowered standards. Its genuine mental sickness.
