This is coming from someone who has zero nostalgia for Atari and their games, but I think the fact that this system even exists at all is pretty cool. A nice, modern way to play classic games physically in HD is something I wish Nintendo and Sega would take notes from. That being said, I can understand your frustration with the software updates, though.
Yes. I set up a standalone monitor with an NES classic for my mother in law and was able to get everything (the game, external speakers) all down to one plug.

A lot of TVshave usb power ports too which negate the need for a wall adapter in some cases. Good review!
