I have programmed drums since the invention of cattle prod drum stools, and this is the mostly useful tutorial I've ever seen. Well there was one where Bernard Purdie taught "Don't put the sticks in your mouth". Thanks Bobby!

Dude… the way Purdie lays the 2 and 4 back that much and makes it feel incredible… a thing of beauty.

Years ago I sang on a project that my band leader recorded all of the bed tracks with a drum machine anchoring it all, and I busted his balls mercilessly over how no drummer in history could or would’ve played the hihat patterns he had laid down on his tracks, with comments like “ you want it to sound real and groovy but there isn’t a drummer in the world who plays 16th’s on hats while playing a roundhouse fill at the same time bro !” While it was fun roasting this guy who had been an arch rival of mine up until my inclusion in his ultimate metal band, it would have been so much better and easier to just direct him to your video as I think your hihat tips in the start of this video totally rules! Dropping the pitch of those quieter hits really brought this track to life. Thanks for sharing your wealth of hard earned knowledge with the rest of us wanna be types.

I got to meet and enjoy Bernard Purdie at a NAMM booth (Chicago '84) and it was big fun for me! (a guitarist) They (Sonor I think) set him up in the aisle with a stool and snare, bringing him another kit piece every couple minutes. BP was not about to be annoyed/deterred! LOL He just kept expanding his fabulous groove, little by little. A favorite memory for me.

This was great! Another thing with lowering the pitch on the hi-hat on different beats makes it sound like a drummer hitting the hi-hat on a different spot of the hi-hat. It gives it a much more human feel! Thanks for this!

Really great techniques. That hi hat pitch trick was next level. Sounds soooo much better with some feel in there.

Very nice Doc, this really does make the biggest difference in giving programmed drums a more alive feel. That's why this is one of the best production channels, your always bringing super high quality lessons, and there arent any moments when it feels like the lessons are dragging. I had a college instructor who, (for the life of me i could not stay awake in his class) had a tendency to drag on about things. Thank you, I really appreciate all you do, and have learned some really golden techniques from watching your channel.

Another great tutorial by Dr Bob. I’ve been recording since the 1990’s, and still have and use a Linn drum machine. I learned more in the 15 minutes of programming than I have in the last 30 years.

"Play with the timing" is the best suggestion... because many samples get sequenced to feel this way due to long attacks, not perfectly trimmed etc etc. So people need to be aware of what feel they have to begin with. For example try with just midi first and swap out all your samples. The groove will change depending on what the sampled material is like... or who played what... ahead or behind etc.

Been a drummer since the mid 80's, now I'm finally into this music production thing and I've been wondering how to adjust the time of the hits to make then feel like Dr Bob has shown. Thank you!!!! You've saved me countless hours of trying to move those little rectangles back just slightly. It makes such a difference and really is worth the effort because the end result is undeniable.

Thanks! A very importent lesson for us recoding in apartments. Even if i could play live drums it wouldn't be liked by my nabours. Everything that make programmed drums come to live is a must knowledge for people like me.

Well played Mr Huff, that's the way to do it! A good trick would also be to play all Hi-hats and cymbals with midi e-drums, rather than programming (if you are a drummer, that is). And love the "un-grid" of the snare.

Great video - The holy grail for people trying to humanise thier rhythm tracks at home. I may have said this before but I remember reading that the Fleetwood Mac magic was essentially because MIck & John were pulling against each other - one slightly early, one slightly late - I'll experiment with this myself but I'd be interested to see you do that with what you have already set up...

And if you’re programming with MIDI instead of samples Cubase has some great presets in the logical editor like ‘randomise up to 10 ticks’ which help make quick humanising changes too

without having watched more than 7 mins ...(enjoying this very much ) i wanted to challenge my perception before i heard your suggestions
loved the hi hat idea ...and i was thinking maybe the snare could be offset to flam and rush and drag every alternate strike ...the bass sounded rigid too maybe do what you did to the hats and make them rise and lower in a ducking kind of way to have the dynamics they seem to lack ?
maybe even do the slight pitch thing with the bass drum ? Tho you wanted an anchor ...yep , great food for thought ...and well worth the effort ....sadly i play drums but lack of room makes me use drum pattens ....i am lucky i can play to a metronome ...but my drumming is just loose enough to swing a bit ....an advantage to have it seems !

Yeah I don't dig how much some guys edit the performances. There was a dude who would cut out the parts between notes in 16th and 32nd shred solos and then cry and write songs about people being haters when they would accuse him of speeding up solos.

Under 40 ms the brain hears one sound, but above you will interpret it as multiple sounds or a delay. So, to use this Dr. HAAS effect, be careful you stay under the 40 ms. BTW, most DAW have a randomize or humanize option for midi, that can help to make it feel more human. (You can select which notes / drum midi you want to alter and how much.) Or use Toontrack drum midi files as a starting point, then the human feel is also included. I think that approach might be a bit less time-consuming.

PRO TIP: bump the snares up 5 to 7 mills behind instead of 10, put your first kick(beat 1) ahead 10 to 5 mills(this is a range so experiment but you'll find something between 5 and 10 that just really feels good!), push all the ands(kick and hats) late about 5 to 7 mills AND SLIGHTLY VARY(so have one at 5 one 7 and so on). Also bump the dbs(about 3+) on everything that's on beat 1(hats and kick). OH! Secret sauce!! pick an and(in the hats) bump it up 2db on that one and it doesn't matter which one....buuuut I do like to do this on the and of 3 or 4. : ) happy pocketing. ; ). OH ALSO as far as kicks and snares lining with the hats I don't really like that, I think you've seen or heard that 10 to 15 milliseconds of the hats in front or behind the kick or snare as the effect of making those elements(kick or snare) sound fatter(when hats are behind) or thinner(when hats are ahead) it's been noted by many of the engineers that worked with Porcaro, JR and Bernard or the Steves, that they all had there hats behind everything most of the time ; )

Another precious video, Sir! But hopefully I do not have to use this technique. I will more and more rely on real drummers!
