Snufkin must really hate goodbyes if he just completely avoids them like that. He'd rather stay longer in Moominvalley and freeze than say goodbye to Moomin.

This kind of changed my perspective. At first, I thought it was because Snufkin was being pretentious about his freedom (which he kind of is sometimes) and acting like saying goodbye to Moomintroll was an unreasonable request.
But the guy just hates goodbyes, which is understandable and I feel for that.

I'm an audiovisual translator/adaptator (I translate the dialogs in my language - French - and then have to adapt them so that they match the lip movements) and I can't help but think of how much easier adapting Moomintroll's lines must be thanks to his big snout! lol.

I like to think Moomin and Snufkin do like each other, but just like their real world counterparts, can't sustain a relationship because of each other's nature. Their personalities fit together, just not their goals and life styles.
In the books, Snorkmaiden comforts Moomin when Snufkin leaves. She can always be there when Snufkin cannot. But there is always a longing, a curiosity of what could of been if things were different. I think that's what their relationship represents, the left overs of a relationship that couldn't be. A longing that cannot be fulfilled.
Izzy Mitchell, another viewer here on RUclips, turned my whole perspective around. Instead of the relationship representing longing, they thought it represented compromise. Moomin can't join Snufkin on his adventures, and Snufkin needs his freedom to be alone. They have contrasting natures, but as Izzy put it, "Like, instead of "stay with me," it's more of a "come back when you can." I just love that".

Snufkin travels during the winter, so I don't think the cold really bothers him. So staying until Moomin fell asleep wasn't inconvenient for him at all I think. He's lived outdoors his whole life, pretty sure he can handle hanging out, otherwise he wouldn't have offered. He really cares for Moomin
Nah, don't know :) One thing is to sneak away before it's too cold, and the other thing is drag yourself through the mounds of snow :D

As an introvert, I get why Snufkin might want to leave without saying goodbye. It's gonna happen every year, and it's harder to be emotional about it every time. It's not supposed to be cruel to Moomin. Because it's a natural thing for Snufkin to leave to be on his own, making it emotional and difficult (plus having another reason to regret leaving) will make Snufkin wonder why he's leaving. If he chooses not to leave so he can't "hurt" Moomin, he will be unhappy to be around Moomin. That's cruel for both of them in the long run.

No ones wrong and Moomin papa was certain to avoid picking sides and was completely trueful whilst gentle ♡ Beautiful scene. ♡

In our present era of TV, in which virtually all cartoon dads are near-universally depicted as lazy, dimwitted, drunken, dysfunctional, cowardly, incompetent, brainless, bumbling buffoons, It's honestly really refreshing and heartwarming to encounter an animated father who dispenses such genuinely wise, kind, caring, supportive and wholesome life-advice to his kids. 💖
Our culture dearly needs more representation of truly exemplary role-model dads like Moominpappa. 🥰

Makes me wonder why cartoon mothers are with the cartoon fathers when, as you rightfully say, they are all near-universally lazy, etc. Like, what is holding the relationship together at this point? Because saying it's for the sake of the kids is a terrible reason. My parents splitting up was the best thing for me in my personal experience.

I have always felt so conflicted about Snufmin's Dynamic, They fit so well together but I don't think Snufkin would ever want to commit more than he already does now to Moomin with how their friendship works, even if I'd love to imagine Snufkin and Moomin being together in any sort of romantic relationship beyond this, It's hard to truly see that as a possibility more because of Snufkin's Wanderlust that will always keep him wanting to have that solitude he craves, even so, this is portrayed perfectly here, and the growth Moomin seems to gain as time goes on, to be able to accept Snufkin's nature is truly something that makes me love Moominvalley, it isn't often a show puts depth in a characters nature and how said nature effects those around said characters, Snufkin's want for solitude and his wanderlust for freedom, conflicts heavily with his honest care for Moomintroll and Moominvalley as a whole so much so that he can even consider Moomintroll a friend to return to, I will always remember this because of Snufkin and Moomins Friendship, It's just so enticing

Oh my this sounds very different in English 😅 I’ve only ever watched it in Swedish and Finnish so this is sooo weird but you know what? It’s ok too! Also moomin and his dad have such a good bond and I just LOVE to see it
I love their relationship in 90s, too! I think they lost it in 2019 because Moominpappa is such a snob in the new one.

so sad about this show "emotions in November" what happened to the Moomins? ;( so sad for snufkin and Toft, it is like one of those movies where at the end the whole thing was dreamed, in this case by Toft and hence the Moomins never existed or some sort of twisted reality D: , oh Gosh , Snufkin !!!

They're both addressed as children in The Exploits of Moominpappa and Finn Family Moomintroll. Tove Jansson intended for them to be close in age but left their actual ages ambiguous. Even if Snufkin's a year or two older, it's not drastic.

he turns 10 in comet in moominland. that's why i don't understand why they made snufkin look and sound like an adult (his age is unknown in the books but since he hangs out with the kids i assume he's a kid or a teenager too).

@@mslightbulb I think so too. My guess would be that moomin is 10 or 11 in first episode and around 14 in the last episode of season 1 when Snufkin leaves once again. I think that at least 3 years passes through this 90’s anime? 🤔

The show is The Moomins, and I guess it became a thing because of the Moominvalley 2019 series

Im just saying it is different words. I always thought "gay" is about men having sех, whether they are friends or not. But you can be close friends with no regard to this. And since I read Janssons books being a kid, this word really confuses me.

@@bertyshogan6746 hey there! Being gay isn’t just about sex: Kids can be gay and have gay crushes and there doesn’t have to be anything ‘sexual’ or adult about it. So I think when gay people see these two characters they recognise in their relationship a lot of themselves from when they were younger. Whether they are close friends or romantically interested is totally up to interpretation! But either way nobody is saying that there’s anything sexual going on.
