- Demolishing the old house, DIY
Part 1 of building our super insulated house.
My family and I tore down the old house on this lot before building our new super-insulated house. This is the first in a series of videos where I'm going to take you through the building of our super-insulated, air-tight home. This project is DIY. Our house is going to incorporate passive solar and active solar systems, as well as solar panels, and be built near (or exceeding) passive house standards. Хобби
I'm doing a very similar project myself. I've tore out all insides and just like 2 more huge rooms to take the tongue n groove out of the floor because I'm trying to salvage as much wood as possible because the wood is very old early 1900's and strong, so once that is done I thought I would begin on taking the roof off. I like a long way to go considering I'm doing it by myself and still working a full time job. I only have time to work on it every once in a while but am determined to finish it before I die. I haven't got to work on it this summer because of the extreme heat but hopefully I'll be able to pick it up again. This video helped my confidence on doing it myself, so thanks just wanted to share my similar project.
Did you ever finish your home demolition project ?
Thank you for posting this!
Zowie....can't wait for part 2!
Thanks for watching. Part two will be foundation work.
Very nice job, much economic
Isn't it something how well wood holds up over the decades- you had floor joist and roof rafters that are near perfect ! can't wait to find out why the township made you keep the foundation --- :P
The interesting thing about the roof rafters was the massive "creep". They all had severe bowing to them. (Wood creep is the deforming of wood under load over time.) Thanks for watching.
Ahhhh yes, I can see the bow in the rafters looking at the main picture..yikes
Have you put up the part 2 yet sir? Extremely excited.

heya 1s that had to be a very good house !!!!
How much would you had charged to do that job?
I have been asked 2 tear down a similar sized home.
Seems like a good time to use a mini excavator and save time!
End of 2023 and yt recommended this to me and I was just thinking man that house is worth at least 300k in today's market why tear it down? Then I realized this video is 5 yrs old
Yeah, the market is crazy right now.
Being such an old house I hope you tested for asbestos and lead. The video was to short and quick, but that siding looked like asbestos tiles. It sounded like it.
Everything was tested and removed in accordance with code. I agree the siding looked like asbestos, but was actually cedar. Thanks for watching.
@@DavidPozEnergy Your very welcome. Just want your family to be safe.
How long did it take you to disassemble the house this way, what square footage was the old house? Is there a part 2?
I think it was a week. about 700 square feet. This is part 2: ruclips.net/video/tIwFG9cSG1E/видео.html
Reminds me of a few I did. Towns have some ridiculous ideas of construction as old as that foundation. Hope you got that siding disposed of before they came along.
I have a back house that I want to demolish do I need to remove the gas all power has been disconnected
looks like our house! lol
I see that old GFCI receptacle
when demolishing did y'all try to keep any of the materials from the old house?
Yes. I kept most of the 2x6's and used them for years after for all kinds of projects.
What are the dimensions and total square footage of your new home? I'm enjoying all your videos, but am having trouble keeping everything straight (garage, house, friend's garages, etc)
The house is 20x36 exterior footprint, walls are one foot thick, so interior square footage is 612 square feet. This had to be built to the original foundation. My garage I added a few years later and is 28x44, about twice as big as the house. Thanks for watching.
@@DavidPozEnergy thanks for the info. I am enjoying your videos and will be subscribing.
Do you have a video on your framing method to get the 1ft thick walls?
Is the 612 sq ft snug with a little girl aboard now?
I am planning on building a 24x36 two story home for our family on some acreage we own. I want it to be as energy efficient as possible, but am not shooting for completely off grid. Trying to decide the right time to pull the trigger. Might try to build with cash as we go and hopefully end up with a completely paid for residence.
I do have videos on the framing, but they are old (not very good). This video was one where I re-worked the old footage to make it better. I will be doing that soon with the framing ones as well. In the mean time try this video: ruclips.net/video/isN_4XyjtWc/видео.html Good luck with your project. If you have any specific questions try e-mailing me.
@@DavidPozEnergy is it safe to do demolition without knowing if it has asbestos or not?
Could you have build more than one story?
Did you save a bunch of money not renting a caterpillar?
Probably I’d buy a shipping container for the wood leftover as I’ll make it to gas or heat my home one day
cost of demolition of this kind of house?
I forget the exact cost just for demo. I did the work myself to keep costs down. it was 4 full dumpsters.
how long was this process?
We tore down the old house in a weekend with about a dozen friends/family.
Hey, how come you didn’t save that awful purple carpet for me? I wanted to make a Grimmace costume!
A dead snake. That’s what kind of snake that is.
The original house was in "Burn Down Condition".
Why you let the house gone completely ,o just mean you can make all New and repair the old part ...
Or you wanna build a New house ??
Im sorry for asking, it just interesting me a lot ....🤗🤫‼️❓

Thats not ugly
Boi can I get y'all help
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭why did you demolish the house!!! This is what happens if the guys in Texas flip n move don’t move the houses after purchase on auction.
To directly answer your question: "why did you demolish the house" The answer is: because it was rotted, leaking, had mice living in it, was not insulated, could not get a mortgage, everything needed replacing, had mold, looked terrible, and I didn't want to live in it. Thanks for watching.
Wtf! Was there literally a snake under your old house. Are you sure your not your in Australia or something!?
Yes, there was a snake under the house. I'm in Massachusetts
Snake was a copperhead pit viper poisonous
Venomous not poison and that was a corn snake silly sheeple
Corn snake good
I was thinking this was also a cornsnake very beautiful!
Excavator is much easier...
Please God, let me NEVER live near copperheads!
Not really that amusing that someone had to live like that.
inside of the house it looked ugly🤮
