I'm glad the devs smartly programmed this game so that the Trio of 9999 does not replace what would be your typical damage unless it's specifically under 9999.
@97432561 So in a No Sphere Grid run a character may say do 100 damage. With the Trio of 9999 everything you does 9999 damage or healing. In a NORMAL run, say a character does 20,000 damage. If you use Trio of 9999 that 20,000 damage doesn't change to 9999 because it's lower than the damage you would do otherwise.
@@97432561 adding on to what he said, it's really useful for normal runs where you do over 9999 damage because it still buffs anything under it. For example, if you use auto potion, every potion now heals 9999 at minimum.
This is the video I’ve been waiting for. Been begging multiple content creators for literal years to do this and they all said it’s too hard. Done this myself once and was easily my hardest challenge
It was so cool to watch this! I used your guide for the normal/easiest strat for Penance, but seeing it done like this is awesome. Truly a challenge, and you kept focus for two hours straight, which is even more impressive! Thanks for sharing this, it was worth it for sure!
Dansg08 penance drinking game: take a drink every time he says “Ctb knowledge”, says he can’t split the arms, and references how good quick pockets is. Good luck everyone! 😂 Great video Berk!
I Loved this. Ive been using the farplane editor to play around with the game in ways i couldnt. I remember i even gave Tidus the buster sword through this editor just for the fun of it!
Even beating Penance was a feat of strength for me. It did however feel more like a endurance test in the end, among the same lines what you said about it. Watching this video made me think if it really should've been more like what it is in this challenge. Maybe have him cast judgement day, but halve his hp, and make the phase shift at 50 %. Also I think there should be a head's up when Penance is ready to cast Judgment Day. Maybe even a count down, but with 10 intervals? Also thanks for the video. I never EVER thought about beating this boss without keeping the arms down :D
Good stuff, was a fun watch. On one of the (10+ years) old challenge threads I posted about having done this fight, but I have zero recollection of it, so it was interesting to watch it as if it was completely new to me, lol. The no BHPL version should definitely be more interesting, would love to see you navigate that fight. Another idea I had (in case you're interested in trying it eventually) was 2 characters vs Penance. Not quite solo (impossible) but not quite full party (very easy with the right setup). I still want to try this at some point, to my knowledge it has never been done.
The early discussion of the savefile editor makes me wonder, how things would shape up with a challenge like, new game file, start the game, and from that point on you have a limited (real life? Game?) time to prepare whether it's through story progress, crafting, farming, grinding. Once the time's up, possibly one last bit of menuing allowed, and then it's off to the superbosses.
@@jabarimcleod9768honestly I think single character runs are easy compared to this. Nothing comes close to this challenge. Took me well over a couple hundred attempts, and that just the ones I noted down
I enjoy this fight for being one of the only ones in the entire game I have to strategize for, but at the same time there is so little room for error that it's more of an endurance test than anything else. Nothing is really done on the fly, it's all preplanned, and if you mess up any of your tactics, you lose. haha. I think this is the case for all of the super bosses in FF games. You have to come up with a strat before hand, and the challenge is really just executing it over a span of time. I'd love to see more dynamic fights and less giant HP pools in FF end game, especially when in comparison the story bosses get one shot if you're even slightly over leveled haha. I think playing with 99,999 hp was faster, more fun, and potentially safer, but regardless of strat, even using 4x this fight can easily take ~30 minutes and I find that wild haha.
Well played ^^ definitely had a fair bit of good fortune on the arms' chosen turns, but love to see all the turn manipulation to ensure you can always deal with Armor Break where possible. GG.
Was wondering when I would see you get around to doing this. To be honest, the "Penance Extreme" challenge never really got enough traffic such that a definition was "agreed". As far as I have always seen, it has simply referred to the method of never killing the arms. Definitely worth a look without BHPL, makes the fight more interesting for sure.
By my definition, hitting the Arms is allowed, too. Counter is sometimes really good getting a few extra hits on Penance, and Regen should heal a few hits worth of damage done to the Arms.
Never understood why Square gave Penance the Slowga move... The Penance fight is practically, if not literally, impossible without autohaste. Slow status isn't even what makes that true (it's just the shear turn-count:potion-count ratio), so it's not like it's a chump check to make sure the characters have autohaste. There is literally no purpose to Slowga in this fight. It is guaranteed to be a wasted turn by Penance's arm, since anyone who is not immune to slow will not win the fight anyway.
You know the worst part? Obliteration inflicts Slow on the whole party already, every single time Penance takes a turn in phase 1. And so does Tera-Graviton, another move the Left Arm can use. It really is a move that just makes no sense to be there.
Even if I love Penance, I hate how they designed its attacks. As you said, Auto-Haste is *the* best ability in the game. If I were to design Penance, I would make Obliteration inflict Curse, thus limiting Overdrive usage. Make one arm immune to Physical damage and the other immune to Magical damage which will force the characters to use overdrives. Now that would make it a wild dynamic. Never thought about what I would replace Slowga with, though.
Anyone tried this on a ps2 no AR max codes ? Makes me want to get the old console out The farming in the monster arena always made me think twice about doing this game, all dark aeons and penance with NO yojimbo
@@K.Erickson_09 yes. It needs to have both arms present to use it. But I‘ve heard that it can re-summon the arms and use it in the same turn (if those two events happen to overlap), so you gotta make sure that you defeat them *shortly before* the Judgement Day counter reaches 19
@@marctosh705 yeah, I never really went deeper into it after a few attempts, but it is so difficult to recover. Actually without Auto-Life it is definitely not possible
Honestly, with how "easy" you make it seem, it kind of feels like you're fighting yourself here instead of Penance because of the time it takes to fight it. It feels like fighting Omega Weapon on NSGNS is harder because of how weird the AI is. That or maybe you got godly rng again because your left hand seems to like Slowga way too much lol!
I'm glad the devs smartly programmed this game so that the Trio of 9999 does not replace what would be your typical damage unless it's specifically under 9999.
it's the small things, but those small things show how much the devs cared about edge cases
What does this meant? Dun quite understand...

Would have been a hilarious balance change if they patched that into the remaster

I absolutely love your FFX videos, i managed to beat all of the Dark Aeons, Nemesis and Penance due to your knowledge so keep up the great work 👌
I always thought the “gimmick” of Penance was it wasn’t possible to win without killing the arms, so this is amazing

I've beaten ffx many times and never heard of pennance before... there's always more content to this game... I love it.
Didn't know this was a thing. Love the music. Best of luck my guy. Love the content.
Penance’s Judgment Day is one of my favourite animated attacks in the game. It’s a horrifying attack to deal with, but at least it looks great lol.
this is about to be my new favourite video
I’m so glad to see you upload this 😃

the nefarious slowga arm for the first section of the video truly
Huh, the Gullwings look a little different today. Trying some new outfits I guess
It's throwback and cosplay day, didn't ya know? XP

You mentioned that you wished you'd pre-filled the Aeon's Overdrives, but wouldn't their Overdrives have damaged the arms too?
That was a good watch.
Seems like this should be a legit trophy on PS.
Question, does Puryfying Salts with Use has more delat than Dispeling? Always tought its always faster to Use than use magic.
I came here expecting Penance to have no arms... he really wasn't harmless.

Will you do doing the “extreme” version of this with the quad 9 HP
