FPV Around Iceland Ep01 - Winter in the Westfjords Part 1

- I spent Christmas up in the beautiful Westfjords, Iceland! Weather was not great but we did have an opening to get in FPV drone flights on the 25th December. There was a very limited light but I managed to get in two flights when the day was the brightest.
On the 27th when I was driving back to the City I filmed Part 2, there I did some flights around the south-western part of the Westfjords (Önundafjörður, Dýrafjörður & Dynjandi in Arnar fjörður) I cant wait to edit that one and show you all!

Absolutely stunning work... you are an artist with that drone. And your choice of music is perfect. I was watching and thinking about Iceland as the "land of fire and ice. " Those mighty mountains were once part of the "fire" that created your beautiful island. And now they are majestic and pristine clothed in snow and ice. In a way a testament to the before and after of Iceland. You are blessed to live there! (Even with the cold winters!!)

This was beautiful, Isak! I followed the path of your drone on Google Earth, and learned that Hnífsdalur is only less than 4 km from Ísafjörður.
What an amazing place to live! 😍
Oh really! Then you notice how far away the 2nd peak was😅 It was a great place to grow up at, close to the main town but still tucked away nicely between the mountains⛰️
@@IcelandFPV yes, I did notice how far the second peak was, and I'm very envious of where you got to grow up. I know it's cold in winter, but it's so beautiful. And you had all the beauty of isolation without being too far from a bigger town. 😍

Wow!! I don’t have words to describe. Next year i will go around the Westfjords by bicycle. I will pass the tunnel and go to Bolungavik and up to the observatory point. That will be my most northern point of the trip. Thank you for this great content and a happy new year from Germany.

These are Snjotitlingur, or Solskrikja (during summer)
They group up during winter and change to winter colors, they usually eat berries & seed, people feed then with special bird food (seed & corn)

Very nice! One thing when looking at this footage is that it is really hard to get reference points that gives an idea about distances, speed, size of objects etc. I guess it would be really great to have a few people at the summit or some other object to get as reference. How far away was that "far away" mountain? The drone is so incredibly fast that the distance felt much shorter than it really is.
The faraway mountain peak on 2nd flight is around 2.7km away in straight line from where I started, the total distance of that flight was around 7km maybe.
The first mountain was about 1.2km or so up the side, usully I think I was going around 70-80km/h on my way up, maybe around 100-120km/h on my way down.
Only way to give comparison might be the big rock on the mountain side of first mountain, it’s called “Hádegissteinn” it’s at least 4-5 person tall and you would fit at least handful of people ontop of it.
Peak on 1st mountain is 724m, peak on 2nd mountain is 725m, the 3d peak (where I did the dive towards the end is at 647m.
I hope this gave you some prespective.

Isak, how fast does your drive fly?
I usually dont go much faster than 100km/h or so, but it should be able to go at least 130-150km/h with the wind in the back🏎️
What town were you flying out of? Great footage!
Town name is Hnifsdalur, in the northern Westfjords of Iceland
not sure if you can fly through this abandoned tunnel (on the left if you stay face to the shore) or over the abandoned old shore road.
I have thought bout it, and I might be able to, will definetley give it a go this summer!
@@IcelandFPV will be great! Not sure if any lava tubes available to fly through. Can be interesting as well.
Another idea is to land on the bottom of the 2022 crater or at least have a close inspection on the bottom to see how the channel that was feeding it looks like.
Not sure if it's permitted - close fly over or through some famous or not so famous places in Reykjavik. Flying around unloading fishing ship but I'm unsure about the seagulls hazard for this. :)
These underwater videos were interesting too. So maybe you can find some other places to look at, maybe lakes.
