    VBC is a classic, even in 2023! FG-73, FG-76, VTM, VBC, and now FG-X2 is KILLER on the 2buss! Thank you, Steven and FG!

    Slate plugins change my workflow drastically, specially since the VMR. Now I think less and feel more when I am mixing.
    THANKS!

    Slate and Cubase...my favorites! I hear the impact on all of the examples even while listening on the "ultimate reference speakers" which are cheap desktop speakers.

    First two a level-matched and truthfully subtle, but in the last example while VMR and VBC are gain-compensated, the VMR obviously adds gain, so in the end we have that heaven/earth difference. We all are in love with your plugins, they are great even level matched, but i'm just BEGGING you to give us the trim on the VMR, i have to add gain plugins after it switch/tweak it every time, that really ruins the idea of working fast in one rack.

    Great tutorial, Steven! I would really love a tutorial on the VBC or the VMR on more acoustic mixes though. I am really interested in how you would use your compressor plugins on acoustic guitars, pianos or an acoustic mix in general.

    Really love the FG-Grey, nice work!. *Suggestion for the Virtual Bus Compressors (VBC) Plugins:
    I think it would be awesome if you added a sidechain capability to the FG-Grey so it could be used as a ducker. I've also been looking for a ducker that has a "hold" feature (similar to the Pro Tools Dyn3 gate) so that you could further dial in the release on a ducker.
    Also, digital metering on the Mu/Grey would be nice to know exactly what dB are being reduced.

    very nice slate, some good mixing. I guess I feel that a good EQ, COMP (buss/channel), and saturation (tape sim) can get most of my in the box work done as well, you've got this covered with your line up. just add a loudness maximizer or limiter for final apparent volume, and a transparent bus EQ for the master on certain mixes, and what more do you really need besides FX. we are spoilt with so many plugins these days!

      The FG-Grey is essentially an SSL bus compressor with a few tweaks to the circut, the FG-Red is a model of the Focusrite Red 3 compressor, and the FG-Mu is basically a fairchild 670 crossed with a Manley Vari-Mu. Hope that helps.

    Steven, unless you gain stage the before and after, it's an unfair comparison. Of course the latter is going to sound ''better'' because louder is always perceived as better.
    You know this of course, otherwise the VMR would have had an output knob!

    • @esongsore
      @esongsore 9 лет назад +1

      ***** I agree. It is a clear difference irrespective of the volume levels.

    • @SlateDigitalTV
      @SlateDigitalTV  9 лет назад +19

      Hi there. If you compress something 5db, then it will bring up the low level material and it should have higher RMS. But, we did try to align the PEAK levels. Having said all that, there is an obvious difference in all of these examples that can be heard regardless of volume.

    • @MasonDayot
      @MasonDayot 9 лет назад +1

      song5700 I know that the FG great has a 1.5 db increase. So when i do -4db i set the make up gain to 2.5 so that i'll be coo but yeah it needs some linked outputs

    • @SlateDigitalTV
      @SlateDigitalTV  9 лет назад +6

      Mason Dayot Hi! There is no FG-Grey 1.5db increase unless you increase the output gain by 1.5db. What you are noticing when you increase 2.5db when you are compressing 4db is the phenomenon of compression itself, whereas the 4db gain reduction is increasing your overall RMS, hence the song will be louder.

      Late to the party, but regardless of any perceived volume differences, the "mastered" quality of the drums using the VBC, particularly the snare...hear the ring, the room ambience..? This is evident regardless. I've adopted this compressor over my former favorite parallel technique with an 1176. So much easier and transparent, in it's still vibe-y way.

    VOLUME MATCHING for God's sake.

    • @IMAWriterRobJ
      @IMAWriterRobJ 7 лет назад +3

      Why...he could have played the "naked" kit twice as loud and the snare would have still be good, but a bit lifeless and missing space and attitude. This isn't a stereo store, where guys try to sell you crap by playing it louder. Much of what you perceive as louder are added transients. Yes, overall there's maybe a db difference but so what?
