  • Edit: Wanted to address mistakenly referring to Marines occasionally in this video as Corpsmen.
    Our first video in The History of series in which we go over the start of the US military's modernization of its camouflage and field uniforms. We start off with the USMC's creation and issuing of its very own camouflage uniform MARPAT.

    As a Former Marine, I still think the copyrighting of MARPAT was dumb. It should have been made available to all the services. The silliness of each service wasting money for unique patterns is insane...how much training would that money have facilitated??

    • @treygregory7929
      @treygregory7929 4 года назад +21

      Laggy McLaggylag Well, that also doesn’t mean everyone actually did vote tiger stripe. That’s just anecdotal evidence. A ton of people could have voted for what won. Maybe we hear the from the guys who voted for tiger stripes more because they didn’t get their way? And the other voters just moved on?
      The tiger stripes look cool in an 80s action movie kind of way. But I do think they actually went with the better uniform. And even if everyone did vote tiger stripe, crowd sourcing opinions isn’t always the best way to go (see who we elect to Congress, and the Yeet Cannon, for proof of that).
      A little food for thought: during the last election I had a couple friends who probably would have literally bet their house that Hilary was going to win. Why? They lived in Manhattan. They lived in a bubble. They actually said “I don’t know a single person who is voting for Trump. Hillary is going to win in a landslide.” Clearly that didn’t happen right? It’s fallacious to assume the rest of the Marines thought the same way as the OP and the Marines in the OP’s sphere. Just like it’s fallacious to attribute some sort of malicious motives to the higher ups just because they went with another pattern. Maybe they received more info that didn’t favor tiger stripes? Maybe the votes from the Marines was one aspect of a multi-tiered approach to pick? Maybe they knew the Air Force were going to go with Tiger Stripes and they ran like hell. I don’t know. I’m just glad we didn’t go with them.

    • @treygregory7929
      @treygregory7929 4 года назад +1

      1337penguinman I have zero doubt contractor kickbacks have played a big role in many situations like this (see the Marines’ MTV and how that was purchased). But with Marpat, I really think they decided that was the best choice. It’s a good uniform. The only one of all the early GWOT patterns still in use. Clearly it’s doing something right.
      But I also think they had their minds made up about that digital pattern for some reason. Before the tests started that is. Kind of like how I think they were going with some HK416 variant for their new rifle regardless of if they held a competition (which they didn’t.) I think there’s a decent chance that KAC, FNH, or SIG, LMT, LWRC, and a few others could have provided some very stiff completion for HK. But the Marines (and probably the whole DOD) have this bizarre HK fetish. The HK was going to win. They probably looked at that Canadian pattern, decided they wanted it, and made it happen.

    As someone who was issued Marpat, I will attest to the effectiveness of the green Marpat cammies. They work fantastically in woodland environments. Marines really blend into the woods when wearing them. If you're not paying attention, you might not notice a Marine standing 5 feet away from you in front of some brush. Desert Marpat is nice, but you're not really blending into much when you're patrolling the streets of Anbar provine Iraq. The Army's equivelant grey ACU pattern had the color of gravel and didn't blend into anything. It's good they finally ditched it.

      At least MARPAT actually has woodland colours for woodland and desert colours for desert, with the Army they took the colours from one of the worst performing camo patterns in testing, and slapped it on the MARPAT pattern swatch, and called it a day, rushed a frankenpattern into service with little to no testing just to make the US Military look modern and futuristic, and the Air Force and Navy followed suit. My only criticism of MARPAT is the desert version just uses a desert recolour of the woodland pattern, whereas the basis for MARPAT, CADPAT, used a different and more improved pattern for it's desert version because of scientific test results showing a more open pattern worked for the statistically longer viewing distances in desert environments. Also the fact the USMC uses solid colour vests as a cost saving measure.

Since the Marine Corps doesn't have its own medical personnel, the navy hospital corp provides medical care for both the navy and Marine corps, with green side reffering to the corpmen who are attached to USMC units, and blue side referring to corpmen who serve care for the navy personell. • @G1NZOU
    @G1NZOU 5 лет назад +3

    It is true that the USMC got permission to use CADPAT as a base for recolour, but they asked permission and didn't steal it. Desert MARPAT is very close to the trial versions of Desert CADPAT as a recolour of CADPAT TW, however the Canadians, who had already done a ton of R&D to develop CADPAT TW found out that with the longer average engagement distances in arid environments, a recalculation of the algorithms was necessary and slightly more open, vertically oriented pattern worked better, the result was CADPAT AR, the USMC only had rights to use the base pattern of CADPAT TW and therefore used two recolourations for their two MARPAT versions, with Coyote Brown being the unifying colour between them.
    This is a good example of copying, taking what works and applying the right recolour to match the expected environments, same reason why Japan's recolour of Flecktarn works so well. A bad example of copying is the Army's UCP, they only wanted to look cool and futuristic so chose the worst performing camo in their Natick trials, slapped the bad colours onto the CADPAT design and rushed it out.

      Pockets would be a major issue. Personally I like the WW2 German idea of combat smocks. You have a standard uniform and you issue smocks camouflaged for the specific terrain the unit will be fighting in. Plus, believe it or not, the loose fitting smock actually aids in breaking up a soldier or marine's outline.

    We were authorized to wear desert marpat in summer, and woodland in winter. Then marines were told we can't roll sleeves anymore. Then the commandant reversed that decision. But NOW the commandant says ONLY woodland camo on base, (despite the fact I was stationed in a desert) with desert pattern being reserved for deployment and field excercises.
    So many irrelevant decisions making enlisted marines lives tedious and confusing.

      Marpat comes in woodland and dessert, but there's always some salty ass lcpl, gunny, or range personnel rocking the MARPAT "grassland" pattern. What is "grassland" you may ask. When a salty ass devil spends a bit too long in the sun while wearing woodlands and the color fades to the point where they almost look like ACUs. It's not as pale as desert, but not as dark as a fresh woodland blouse, hence why it's "grassland" because it's somewhere in-between the two

    So. I live in a temperate woodland. I always wondered why everyone was into wearing coyote brown gear when it ruins their camoflauge.
    That was until I saw it on Woodland Marpat. Where it didn't completely ruin the camoflauge and sctuslly complimented it. And it works decently with their desert camo as well. And your telling me this was done on purpose?
    I am blown away by how smart that idea was and it really gives me more respect for the Marines as they not only made a functional digital pattern (looking at you, UCP) but specifically trying to avoid a desert storm situation where you see soldiers in desert cammies wearing woodland gear.

  • @hanzusmc7898
    @hanzusmc7898 5 лет назад +3

    The idea of being seen a mile away goes back to Somalia, it’s not the Camouflage pattern not working, but standing out from other branches. With Somalia the Army had already started switching to the tricolor deserts and wore tan boots. The USMC was still issued the chocolate chips and wore black boots. At the beginning the Somalis would not mess with the Marines 1 ROEs were different and the snipers would take that out and the Marines got their nickname the black boots. That’s the idea of having camo that can be seen a mile away so the Marine Corps could be easily identifiable when put with US Army Soldiers and USAF personnel. Personally I think the Army and Marines should be allowed to run with their patterns. With the Army the herder multi cam because that ACU uniform was a train wreck. Standard sailors have no need for camo uniforms just like airmen and definitely shouldn’t have their own pattern. SEALs and small boat/landing craft personnel should have camo. If you work on a ship you should be wearing the blue shirt and boondockers. Air Force if you aren’t a JTAC or a PJ you should probably be wearing coveralls and be on a flight line. That blue blue digital uniform the Navy came up is ridiculous. They are now moving to the USMC style uniform just off on the colors and has USN in the design instead of USMC. To make a long story short the Air Force and Navy never should have come with their own camouflage.

  • @AZ762SHOOTER
    @AZ762SHOOTER Год назад

    The original boots, before the current coyote brown, were marpat as well. The pattern wore off on the toes and heels and was soon scrapped. I remember the survey on mol and i didnt choose marpat. It looked completely different. It looked way too green. Rumor has it that a gunny in a sniper platoon in pendleton had a watchband that was basically coyote brown but was actually a ralph Lauren color. Another thing they left out in this video is the knee and elbow pad inserts that go into pockets inside of the uniform. We were issued them and nobody used them. Talking to the marines on base now, nobody knows about the pads or why the pockets are inside

    Okay, so, from my observation, there are two kinds of Marines.
    The first is just like any other serviceman. Normal, has respect for other branches, joined the Marines for personal/family reasons, or simply because they wanted to join the Marines.
    The OTHER type is the "WOOO! HOOAH! SEMPER FI!!!!! WE'RE THE BEST! FUCK ALL THE OTHER BRANCHES! MARINES DO EVERYTHING!"
    The second type are the kind that thought they needed to make their OWN pattern, and to then PATENT said pattern. They truly are the most special of snowflakes.
    I don't mean this to be disrespectful. I'm just saying I think it's fucking stupid that certain Marines and Marine Higherups feel the need to be so special they go and fuck up the whole military's deal and set off this whole thing where each branch wants their own uniforms. If it wasn't for the Marines wanting their special camo, the Military would've saved hundreds of millions, if not BILLIONS of dollars.

    The idea of needing to distinguish between the branches is pointless, however the Marine Corps (& I’m an Airman) was the only branch that came up with a “digital” camo that was effective in both woodland and desert environments. The army, Air Force and Navy’s respective digital uniforms were in a word terrible. My experience extends to the USAF’s ABU and aside from blending in with a dirty aircraft the uniform was useless with the only advantage over the old BDU / DCU was its not having to be ironed, other than that it was heavy, thick and was very good at retaining heat, all things you don’t want when deploying to the desert. It was universally hated, cost millions to develop and was recently ditched in favor of multi-cam
