I remember going to basic and seeing the OCP pattern and I fell in love with it. I, along other trainees and Drill Sergeants, agreed that the UCP camo was ineffective in a lot of locations. I tested how well the OCP can hide a person once during one of our FTX and volunteered to be OPFOR for the training. I hid in tall grass and dirt that had dead leaves on it and the BLUFOR trainees just walked on by me while I just laid there on my elbows watching them. They came into contact with the other OPFOR guy and they took cover near me. Needless to say they had a long discussion with the Drill about situational awareness. I saw it as the OCP being effective.
This is way better than the ACU pattern we had before. But an even better pattern was invented back in the 80’s called ASAT - for All Seasons All Terrain. The problem with most camo patterns is that from any great distance the individual pattern can’t be distinguished they tend to just “blob” into a general shape. Take a picture of two people standing next to each other from say 300 meters - have one person in multicam and the other in ASAT. From any great distance you can easily see the superiority of ASAT.
Saw some comments about woodland and desert, we pretty much had workable patterns for different theatres of war , I do think though the flame proof or flame resist was and is very important
Been in the field a few times with this pattern, it is far better that the digital ACU. The removal of the velcro and addition of buttons make it hardier too. I’ve had trouble spotting people about 200 meters out and I have 20, 20 vision.
@gillecroisd 92 honestly I'm surprised the military hasn't switched to stainless steel Nalgene water bottles with nesting cups already. It's just an evolution of the canteen. There's even MOLLE pouches for them made by various companies like Condor and Maxpedition
Well, they only made a few of each for the test, it doesn't cost much, even for an average income-earner standard, to print a uniform. In masses, the US Army usually only use two patterns (desert/tan and olive green). They only have one when the UCP was a standard. Now they're going with three colors - transitional, woodland, and desert. The current Scorpion camo is a transitional pattern, which excels a dry environment with a lot of vegetation.

Hi, can someone provide a source for the woodland/jungle and desert ocp variants that were announced, I’ve been researching on my own for a while and haven’t found anything about them and am curious to learn more.
I added a subdued snap to the center of the ACU combat pants large leg pocket because the velcro alone could not hold the pants pocket closed securely esp when the velcro became worn. I am not a big fan of the slant pockets on the shirt from on the ACU uniforms. I like the old square pockets of the earlier bdu uniform but secure with velcro because buttons would be too bulky under body armor or load bearing vest. Apparently one of the new uniforms tested dropped the shirt chest pockets completely.
Marpat is good, but expensive, since 2 patterns per Marine have to be issued. Both woodland Marpat and Desert Marpat, that is 6 set of uniform in total. The Army only wants to issue 3 sets per soldier, so 1 universal pattern OCP was chosen. Also multicam/ OCP became popular, because a patrol could face 4 different terrains in 1 day: mountain, desert, woodland and urban. So a Jack of all trades, eehhh terrains was necessary. See this video clip: ruclips.net/video/w5wsMpKJlUA/видео.html
To this video administrator, please review or check out the incredible hunting apparel by hunting gear company Sitka. I always assumed the ucp uniform was more efficient because it was using pixels to mess with the idea more. the eye naturally tries to create order and shapes out of anything and it causes illusions. I thought the pixels would cause from far away another's eye to suffer from this scattered effect to cause a illusion helping to conceal them. I guess I was wrong. It wasn't a bad Idea on paper honestly. We use pixels all the time and it does so. I guess for camo you must use more Earthy visuals and not computer instead.
Awsome video. Im curious about the darker and lighter uniforms you mention. I know crye has the mulitcam tropic and mulitcam arid, maybe close to the same thing in the future?
Just for consistency, the video footage of the Aussie is actually wearing AMP, or Australian Multicam Pattern, which is a modified multicam (the new pattern with slight bunny features) but still with multicam colours. AMCU, or Australian Multicam Camouflage Uniform, takes AMP, and applies the typical colorway of DPCU,.
In desert and most open field especially arid areas I have seen multicam silhouette its self appearing too dark, surprisingly as weird as UCP looks up close further out it’s actually effective

Can you do a video on HM Forces combat jackets? I used to have a DPM one that I regret giving up (why did I do that?) I now have an MTP one for photography and dog training. As a civvy I love the cut of it, it's just so flipping useful. Who designed it? Have other nations adopted it in their own colours?
The US military’s stupidity never ceases to amaze me. I remember when I went through basic we had UCP. On the land nav course at Benning some of the instructors were wearing old BDUs and they were incredibly hard to see in the forest environment. All the recruits walking around in UCP were immediately noticeable even at far distances. Furthermore the fact that the Army was already using multicam in Afghanistan when they held the camo contest and then decided for a second time against issuing it to the entire force makes my head hurt.
I always thought the whole ww2 German Wehrmacht and SS splinter pattern and 44 dot and the rest of the camouflages were good and very innovative. Have we considered their patterns? Or ideas of how they came up with those patterns?
ANTICOMM many people consider Scorpion to be a sort of successor to some of the German patterns seen throughout WWII as it mimics some of the shapes and ideas behind them. They did pretty much jumpstart the whole idea behind a lot of camouflage today as far as their testing and research so even though the US doesn’t directly use any from then a lot of what has been used can be sourced back to Germany.
@@UniformHistory multicam has a background of large blobs of macro pattern with a micropattern of dots on top of it. it pretty much follows the waffen ss formula of camo design
This is one of the funniest things when it comes to US military procurement decisions. It's like so many other mistakes the US military has made. Forcing 7.62mmNATO is another one, and they partially replaced that with 5.56mmNATO when they noticed 7.62 (a derivative of .30-06) was too heavy to carry in adequate quantities and too powerful for the expected engagement ranges (something EVERY OTHER COUNTRY HAD CONCLUDED after WWII with their old rifle cartridges). The decision to make the M1 carbine semi-auto-only, even though it would arguably have been the first assault rifle in widespread use. The decision to make M1 Garand use en-bloc clips instead of detachable magazines, even though this was an option. The entire initial process of adopting the M-16... And I'm certain there are numerous others, but can't summon them from memory...
M1 Carbine is fine as a semi-automatic. It's original role was supposed to be for support and specialized troops, not front line use that it slowly became accepted as. The full automatic setting didn't add much to the platform, not without some substantial redesigns needed. En bloc clips on the M1 Garand is fine, if you are going to stick with the 30-06 cartridge on semi-automatic rifle developed in the late 20's, early 30's.You can make the argument the M14 was basically a M1 Garand with a box magazine, and we all know how unsuccessful as an infantry rifle it turned out to be.
The en-block system was a good logistical choice and more reliable than most magazines back then. It made little difference for practical rate of fire. And the M1 carbine design was a poor choice for full automatic. One of the other competitors for the contract was the Hyde Model 1, and was a superior design for select fire. That would have been an excellent basic weapon for light infantry, especially Airborne and Rangers,Raiders etc.
I know it isnt a Camo, but if you could do a video on the Canadian Mounties. As an American from the south, never got to see any except in the movies not too much info I can find be neat to see if they do their uniforms like the Royal Guard and their buttons all mean something.
You've mentioned Suez pattern- its unlicenced copy of MC issued to special forces and (i've heard some rumours) some combat units in Afghanistan. First uniform pic is new camo based on MC created for the border guards recently, while the second pic is actual Suez.
I’m confused when I was in army jrotc I was issued UCP but my trouser cargo pockets had buttons instead of Velcro but why can anyone answer this question
The uniforms changed. Old ones had velcro. ACUs kept being updated to mirror more and more similarly to the previous uniforms i.e. sew ons and buttons. Velcro sucks on the duty uniform.
MrDen312 yeah the Velcro did suck especially when you would be in the field and it would snag on branches and that makes more sense now thanks for the answer
@@denno3124 the exception is that I did like velcro for the wrist cuffs. I'm in between where the buttons are placed. Also the velcro made it easier to accomodate a watch.
I can see why someone would think it might be a good idea to have a pattern design to use universally, and all you need to do is change the colors pattern. It would save time making a design when all you have to do is make everything pixelated and tell a computer to make a pattern color for the new environment. The problem is... nature tells us this is a bad idea. You can't make a universial pattern. Everything must be specialized for the location and task you are doing specifically. Just look at gators , black bears, cougar, tigers, and etc. for proof. You must allow specialization.
Most likely Digital Concealment Systems, LLC submitted camo but wanted more money than crye did for their patent initially so it wasn't considered for the contract. The original AU (Arid Urban) design HAS been tested by some US special operations personnel, and is also being fielded by special forces units of Afghanistan, along with their nemisis HyperStealth Biotech Group (had a big court battle over infringement) Also that "transition period" (where the new camo would be used with UCP) made it more difficult for the atacs family of camo to work well alongside of the UCP do to the large patterns utilized. I prefer the atacs-iX personally, but great family of camo no doubt. Russians are wearing nockoff ATACS in syria right now btw.
I play Roblox and a lot of the accessories and clothing with the OCP camo are labeled as MixPat, is that also a camo? Or is that just another name for OCP?.
In the AF, got to say the Scorpion camo is a much needed change. The tiger stripe has no use, literally. Love the more work friendly advantages of the OCP, and the more Military look of it too. ABUs are ugly and too much like an office uniform. I get the chair force meme but most of my branch are mechanics. The Noner desk worker minority should not dictate the uniform of my branch.
Hated the ACUs big time! They sucked in Iraq. The only good thing was for uniform ID during daytime combat. All the old stuff we gave to the Iraqi Army and Police. I first saw the Multicam pattern back in 1999 at the SHOT show in Las Vegas. This was better than the BDU and DCU patterns. Multicam was used by the 173rd Airborne for experiments during that time in late 07-08. The guys in the Stan were issued this stuff late 08. I retired from the Army in 09 and never got issued the new OCP a.k.a Multicam US version.
Anyone who has ever used faded OCP in very green environments knows it looks like desert camo in the jungle and sticks out like a sore thumb. Its great when its fresh, but when it fades, its awful. The whole pattern needs to be a shade or two darker in order for it to last as a true "universal" camo pattern IMO.
What was so wrong with M81 and DCU in the first place? Did we really need new camo? All we needed were updated uniform cuts. Going from M81 and DCU to that horrendous grey shit was the decision if crackheads. At least the marine corps did well
Putting the FLC over the IOTV will never cease to flip my anger switch. The whole point of the IOTV is that it comes apart in an emergency if you pull the cord in front. It absolutely defeats the purpose to put a vest on over that.

If I remembered correctly, Operation Enduring Freedom Camouflage Patternwas always called OCP back in the days until the current OCP was adopted.
Man...the army has made so many uniforms
* *laughs in navy* *
Gotta justify that military budget!
You forgot Georgia. It's the 2nd or 3rd country after the USA that adopted multicam for the entire armed forces and law enforcement.
These videos are surprisingly fascinating! Thanks!
When the recommended list actually works for once
Brilliant channel. I have not discovered anything similar to this. I would appreciate videos about British MTP, French camouflage pattern, Izraeli camouflage pattern and of course some confrontation to C.P. Multicam.
Bring back multicam and the original uniform cut!!!
7:58 it will replace the MARPAT?
@MSGTsniper Guy don't think so
@MSGTsniper Guy MARPAT its an trulie good uniform

Excellent video!! I'm Argentinian troop. We also use a variety of Multicam (copy) bought to Norinco ltd China, is very similar and is called UCA, Uniforme de Combate Argentino. Is good enought.
Please do the British Camo patterns. Mostly the woodland DPMs, desert DPMs, and the new MTP both the old style MTP and new PCS-CU MTP.
Only the Army can make varied decisions on operational equipment (i.e. uniforms, gear carriers, firearms, vehicles, GPS equipment, ect.)

Very informative series. Subbed and liked. Please do Woodland BDUs
One of my MTIs wore OEF-CP. Everyone in my flight asked him why his uniform looked off.
Outstandig Viedo.
Thanks you.
Very knowledgeable!

PS : Do you think to get a German Camofage Pattern Viedo in the future?

When can we expect the M81 Woodland (AKA Gods Plaid) video
Is it possible for u to make a vid on both the so called dessert chocolate- chip and the so called beanies ?
Great vid mate,
As a former Royal Australian Regiment member of 17yrs I have found this subject really interesting. Cheers 🇦🇺🇺🇸
Marines got it right with marpat
Yeah, how tf did they score so low on that test?
Yeah but they screwed over the other branches by embedding "USMC" into the pattern and essentially making it their own pattern.
So does any military actually use Crye's MCAM pattern? Or is that just limited to civilian use
A lot of US SOCOM units use commercial off-the-shelf Multicam uniforms and combat shirts sold by Crye itself.
@@abp1400 ahh ok, cheers for the clarification

Denmark, most likely
A lot of militaries around the world uses Multicam. Search up "multicam" on Camopedia, and you'll see how many armed forces in the world use it.
To this video administrator, please review or check out the incredible hunting apparel by hunting gear company Sitka.
I know it’s different applications but their camo prints are the most impressive I’ve ever seen. They’re made to fool the eye of ungulates (which are different to humans vision) but please check out their effectiveness even on human eyes. Incredible patterns!
You won’t be disappointed.
Thanks
Brookwood Covert Arid is really cool
1:30 It's Pattern SG 14 used by Polish Board Guard. "Suez" is weared by Polish Army Special Forces, while rest of the army still uses wz.93 "Pantera" ;) Great channel btw ;D
The Soviet solnechnye zaychiki, the original light version anyways, has squared edge patterns and seems rather good for deciduous environments.
I like the Mandarin collar
Yeah, kinda a shame that it goes... but i guess it did get in the way of the neck
I am looking for the Crye Multicam NON "Scorpion". Where's the best place or is there another for desert conditions that will perform the same/better?
If you can, please talk about the italian vegetato camouflage pattern
Thanks for sharing and all your research !
In desert and most open field especially arid areas I have seen multicam silhouette its self appearing too dark, surprisingly as weird as UCP looks up close further out it’s actually effective
that's why there are multicam black and arid version.

Smocks are onlt really used by British Army and Irish Defence Forces
Great Job !
Some of the ww2 German camo's were designed by a landscape painter.
And I'm certain there are numerous others, but can't summon them from memory...
they made the creators of the fn fal change the calibre to 308 then chose not to adopt it.
Do DPM or MTP next
Where did you get the image at 6:09 from?

Why did we as soldiers all realize that ACU had no point ?
Roger Childs common sense.
imagine if all over brush was ever adopted by the US I think we should've done it, looks way better than any digital camo
Both types remind me of the leafy camo worn by the USMC on the helmet covers in WW2.
Where did you find the video at the start
Why was Atacs-AU never considered?
Most likely Digital Concealment Systems, LLC submitted camo but wanted more money than crye did for their patent initially so it wasn't considered for the contract.
The original AU (Arid Urban) design HAS been tested by some US special operations personnel, and is also being fielded by special forces units of Afghanistan, along with their nemisis HyperStealth Biotech Group (had a big court battle over infringement)
Also that "transition period" (where the new camo would be used with UCP) made it more difficult for the atacs family of camo to work well alongside of the UCP do to the large patterns utilized.
I prefer the atacs-iX personally, but great family of camo no doubt.
Russians are wearing nockoff ATACS in syria right now btw.
At 1:30 you showed a new camo for
border guards. Its probably a mix of multicam and flectarn.
I know people that got out of the military at least in part becasue they didnt want to die because of UCP
I play Roblox and a lot of the accessories and clothing with the OCP camo are labeled as MixPat, is that also a camo? Or is that just another name for OCP?.
Good overview, can i get the references about this topic?
In the AF, got to say the Scorpion camo is a much needed change. The tiger stripe has no use, literally. Love the more work friendly advantages of the OCP, and the more Military look of it too. ABUs are ugly and too much like an office uniform. I get the chair force meme but most of my branch are mechanics. The Noner desk worker minority should not dictate the uniform of my branch.
Does anyone know if the OEF-CP uniform tops and bottoms are authorized for use still or are they not allowed to be worn anymore at all?
Can you do the history of ATACS-FG, AU, and XS
Hated the ACUs big time! They sucked in Iraq. The only good thing was for uniform ID during daytime combat. All the old stuff we gave to the Iraqi Army and Police. I first saw the Multicam pattern back in 1999 at the SHOT show in Las Vegas. This was better than the BDU and DCU patterns. Multicam was used by the 173rd Airborne for experiments during that time in late 07-08. The guys in the Stan were issued this stuff late 08. I retired from the Army in 09 and never got issued the new OCP a.k.a Multicam US version.
So what is the current uniform? OCP?
Anyone who has ever used faded OCP in very green environments knows it looks like desert camo in the jungle and sticks out like a sore thumb. Its great when its fresh, but when it fades, its awful.
The whole pattern needs to be a shade or two darker in order for it to last as a true "universal" camo pattern IMO.
it depends, sometimes Multicam/OCP/MTP gets dirty and brownish so it's very good

Army: *Uses OCPs*
Marine Corps: *Laughs in Marpats*
could of saved billions by just staying with the BDU's. by the time you got out of AIT they would be almost the same colors as these new ones.
Jake Wetuski How else would you recommend putting the FLC on?
It would have been better to stick with the M81 all this time than go through all this trouble with UCP.
