  • On his daily First 10 podcast, Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey reacts to the club's 8-6 victory against the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night. Is it time to give shortstop Oneil Cruz credit for emerging from his early-season slump? How much longer can general manager Ben Cherington let Rowdy Tellez struggle at first base? And will the Pirates cum to regret designating Roansy Contreras for assignment to make room for Paul Skenes on the MLB roster?
Jason tackles those questions, then explains why he prefers the Steelers' QB situation with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields to the $212 million contract that the Detroit Lions just gave to Jared Goff.

It's been a month and a half. He is what his stats indicate. Time to move on. 3.2 mil down the drain. That's on Cherington.

Did the Rays claim Contreras? What's up with Chapman, Jason?
How long will Hayes be out? I think Telez goes when Hayes returns. Hopefully, the Pirates do well against the Brewers and Cubs in the meantime. Fingers crossed!

Let's be brutally honest, Jason, organizational wise, the Pirates top 30 prospects are hitting a combined .194. This whole regime has ZERO clue how to develope players they draft. This is why other teams pick up the players the Pirates let go, and harness their ability. Bob Nutting said it himself, that he was tired of former Pirates players going elsewhere, and being successful. It's time for Bob to clean house again. Cherington has had 5 years, with no upward movement.
Look at the pitching at AA Altoona. Bubba Chandler, Anthony Solometo. Both are regressing this year. The Fo is a complete failure.
Also, as for the Starling Marte trade, Liover Pegeuro still is an important piece. He showed power last year, and an improving bat. He is working on cutting down his errors. He needs to be given a whole season, to see his long term viability. After all, we've given Suwinski 3, and he has not turned the corner.

They need to DFA Tellez. Bring up Jake Lamb. Anything you get from Lamb will be more than Rowdy. Cherington has to stop making these player acquisitions basrd on his buddies from past organizations. I respectfully disagree about Suwinski. He is so underwhelming, regardless of the occassional home run. He's well below the Mendoza line, and he has never been able to adjust. You can find another outfielder who can put up more solid numbers, than Jack. Like maybe Andrew Benintendi!
As for O'neil Cruz, he missed all but 9 games last season. It just took him some time to get his mojo back. He's coming around. No worries about him. No comparison to Gregory Polanco.

Yep. Even if Lamb plays at his career worst of .193 avg, .612 ops, he's still an improvement over Tellez.

Yeah, the days of just running a guy out there because you spent a lousy 3 million on him should be over if Cherrington really is telling the truth these are the guys and this is the window. Even yesterday Tallez was 0-5 again. Six weeks is more than enough sample size. Cherrington needs to step up and admit he was wrong and release him. They are not going to be able to wait to the trade deadline and flip him for some single A bum. Just cut the cord already, he is costing them games. The Pirates look awful wheeling him out there because they spent 3 million. It is peanuts.

In his last 140 games, Tellez is hitting .205 with 27 extra base hits. That's no small sample size. He was bad last year. He's been terrible this year. Seems like a good guy, but bad baseball player. The time to move on is now.
