If you have an accent it is proof that you are Great because you are learning another language in addition to your mother tongue.

"Mother tongue" 😆😆, just lol, we also call it "tongue" = "language" but there's lot of different meanings tho

that's not true because Americans have an American accent and the only language they know is english

uzb usa well, linguists always call it as "mother tongue", they normally use that term when referring or specifically compare them with unique characteristics or attributions.

I have been working with individuals who want to learn the North American accent for several years now. What I've noticed is that the main barrier to having an accent is how it may affect someone's CONFIDENCE while speaking in English. Interestingly, this doesn't have very much to do with how close someone's accent is to a native speaker's. Oftentimes, negative comments that someone has received can stay with them for years and years. *Take home message: we should always be kind with our words, as they might be remembered much longer than we think!!*

@John Smith Hi John:) For many non-native speakers, it is very important to master this skill. Just like someone may want to improve his/her vocabulary and grammar, phonetics/phonology is another part of language that's just as valid to work on:-) all the best!

I have no issue with someone wanting to get rid of their accents but in London especially no-one cares if you have an accent as long as you speak clearly and you can be understood. London has so many different accents like Indian, Italian, Spanish, French, etc you name we got it, as a result, we are used to hearing different types of accents. One of the reasons British actors can do an American accent so well. I think New York is like London in terms you have many people with different accents.
American's have a hard time doing the British accent because they are not used to hearing it. Any shows from Britain that are bought by an American network are using re-done with actors using an American accent e.g.Being Human, Misfit, Shameless, etc
      Ps
I have a hard time understand people if there accents are not clear and in that case, I don't want to talk to them because I having to translate everything and become painful. But I gotta admit this was a good video into the insight of what American think of people with accents.

Some accents hurt even my non-native ears (lol maybe I'm hurting others myself with mine), so just imagine the case for a native. So working on accent is fully sensible.

As an American, I usually get excited when I hear an accent because it usually means they're from a different place/culture which is often really interesting. Not being able to understand does suck though because I find my self saying "what" every 5 seconds.

Your pronunciation is very clear and you are fluent, I wish I was like you. For me your accent is perfect but I am also Slavic. I wouldn't care about what Americans think about how you speak cause they usually don't know any foreign languages, didn't even make any effort like yours so shouldn't even open their mouths. I think that English (and other foreign language that you know) is a tool of communication and in your case works perfectly.

    • @walterwhite5578
      @walterwhite5578 5 лет назад

I agree with your point but it extends than just Americans. When native people learn a new language they don't attempt to get the accent right. They don't care. I have often heard non-natives complain that when they are learning English they attempt to get the accent right but when natives speak their language they speak it with their based accent and don't even attempt to get the accent right. So, for example, an English or American speaking Spanish with either an American or English accent.

A lot o people are triving to improve their accent and I respect this, but what really impress me is the way the people talk, I mean their vocabulary, how people build the phrases and are able to transmit their ideias and to play with the words... I really think that this is more important than to perfect the accent.

      - wellington galvao. That's true. But their is one nuance. When people learn and improve their English, they are shaping accent. So their is no need to improve only accent. I agree with you, guy.

my wife is 2nd generation from Romania , my family has been in the USA since the 1650s or so. All of the older people my wife has known over her life spoke with a Eastern European accent. I asked her if she wanted to go to my old country ,she said yes. we made the trip to see my aunt in Alabama. My wife was shocked she told me because for the first time she met older people who spoke with the southern American accent; I told her this southern American accent sounded soft to me and similar to the accent from the UK. Love your videos keep them coming.

You don't need to speak like a native speaker when you talk or speak with native English speaker. As long as you can understand their accent and you are able to speak English clearly, there would be no problem in the conversation. You can master their accent for you to get used to it because native English speaker speak really fast. I am a Filipino and English is our second language. We speak English in neutral accent which is very clear and we don't have any problem with it, that's one reason why lot of foreigners come to our country to learn English. For them, Philippines is the best place to Learn English. That's all for today. See you on the next blog.. 😅😅

I have a North American accent and I'm pretty good at it. When I talk to my friends and relatives from Canada or America it's all cool but when I do the same with the people of my own country who have a different accent they don't understand me and they mock me and also say that I'm faking my accent. But personally I don't think there's something called as "faking" an accent. Have you ever found yourself in a situation where people said the same to you?

I always appreciate non-English speakers making a heartfelt effort to try and speak American English.... I mean, the least I could do is meet them halfway and take the time to really listen and interpret what information they are trying to get across to me rather than totally dismissing them like some other people do. What's surprising to me is that fellow countrymen who speak the same native language of someone who is trying to learn English actually disapprove of that person making such an effort to broaden his or her own horizons. Not cool. But in the end, you just have to look out for yourself and find what makes you happy, regardless of what anyone else thinks.

Although there are definitely some differences with intonation between Russian and American English, I feel as though Russians who dedicate themselves to fluency in English, such as yourself, are very easily understood by native English speakers. The same cannot be said for native speakers of many other languages who have become fluent in English. For example, many French actors and actresses are still sometimes difficult to understand even when speaking English well. Even your close Slavic neighbors, Ukrainians, seem to struggle more with overcoming their accent. I have a friend in Ukraine so I watch a lot of Ukrainian content creators on RUclips and their accent when speaking English is quite a bit stronger than most Russian content creators.
There are many Scandinavians who also speak English so well that it is difficult to pick up their accent. Take PewDiePie for example. His accent is so mild that it is easy to forget that he even has one. I remember being in Crete one time and struggled understanding many of the local shopkeepers, but I visited a bar in which the bartender was Swedish. She spoke English and her accent was so mild that it was nearly as easy as communicating with her as it was with a fellow American.

I like english very much, and since I've been studying it, pronunciation has always been something very important to me; I like to pronounce well. I like languages, and every single language has its own musicality, intonation and rythmn... Every culture has produced its own poetry, drama, narrative, short-tale... However, when you see the true and concrete behavior of the majority of the USA citizens around the world, you will see people who have no interest at all in learning any other language except theirs because they always expect the rest of the world to understand them, as long as they are ¨the Americans¨, the most powerful country in the world. Of course, super of course!!, it's only a part of the US population, sadly most of it, but there are also many others who are open-minded and culturally interested in learning and inmersing. By the way, I love the US accent.

It is the native American accents, especially in the South, New York and New England that are ugly. They could take a lesson from you.

People so nice and polite they never tell you about your accent directly. However, in real life when you out and about you can hear everywhere like her or his accent is terrible or is not good enough.

I also get these comments about my accent and also when I'm talking to Americans on the phone, they don't get everything I say. So, I believe I really need to work on that.

Не знаю почему, но мне куда приятнее смотреть твои видео на английском, чем какие нибудь сериалы или фильмы, тебя как то проще и понятнее слушать, хотя ты не говоришь какой то супер простой речью для детей, есть в этом какая то магия )

I have an accent of Malaysian people talking English.... and actually I wouldn't bother it. Just so though, we've been thought by American pronounciation from earlier on, whilst we're under British Rules for ages. There are several words that I repeatedly pronouncing it wrongly, but oh yesss haha it was an honest mistake...because it's simply not my mother's tounge 😆 Some of it are place names, many words that involve "i" in it, when you try to read numerals and lastly when you try to read something really2 fast. Most times it just sounded gibberish😂😃

I am not American but let me still add a comment. I don't like it when people with an accent speak English that fast that non-native English speakers can hardly understand them.
