As we were roaming these Malls back in the 90's, who would have ever thought that someday they would be closed and abandoned, and people would fly FPV drones through them. Heck, we didn't know what an FPV drone was back in the 90's. Great video Ken, and thanks for sharing.
So many bittersweet memories. My late wife loved that mall. We took our daughter's first Santa pictures there, saw more than a hundred movies, had meals with family, etc. We loved the Chinese eatery in the food court. The owner was a very sweet lady who would make special requests if you asked nicely and showed a little interest in Cantonese cuisine. She made sweet-and-sour tofu for us and it was delicious.
We always called it “market square” mall. Challenges was one of the best video game arcades around back in the day. Thanks for creating this flight down memory lane.
this mall is down the street from me! i used to go to this mall as a kid, its crazy to see it in its current form. thank you for showing it off, its cool that were both from the decatur area
I am not from that area (I am from South West Dekalb), but I remember going to that mall quite often for movies and books! Heck! I still go to the Golden Corral over there by the Macy's with my elderly mom! It didn't even cross my mind to fly my drone there and I bought it specifically to film video lol! It's a Hubsan Zino Pro by the way. Thanks for shooting this!
Challenges was the arcade, then that went out of business and became a game/comic shop for a while. There was a GameStop but it was near the middle of the mall, while Challenges was on the outside and directly accessible from the parking lot.
That was my childhood mall. I still go to the movie theater some time but obviously I haven't seen the interior of the mall proper since before the pandemic.
I really love this stuff you do exploring peices of history with a drone this stuff is so cool I would love to explore places like that thanks man 👍👍👍👍
I haven't been down that road by the mall in months, so I didn't know it was this taken down. It has been dead for so long. I have a lot of exterior photos and photos of graffiti on the adjoining buildings. It is crazy they think a new development on that spot will attract people. That area is a total dead zone of teetering on the edge of closing strip malls and vacant shops.
You gotta give the guy a warning. "Hey, do you want me to instantly double what it costs you to build your FPV drone? But you'll be happy... sorta?" "Why yes Ken, I hate having enough money to buy food every month. I'm all in!" "Well, ok, you're welcome.." Hand the digital goggles to the analog VTX kid. Somewhere, someone giggles :) "ahhh yes, we hooked another one."
You’re so bad for me Ken. I had a Mavic mini when I started watching you.i, a private pilot but not current. Now I’m 107 as well. Now I’ve got a Phantom 4 Pro, 6 batteries, aftermarket triple charger, 12v DC charger, DJI triple charger dock (can charge 5 batteries at once with the aftermarket tripple charger and DJI dock on one leg), a props on case to hold it all, and just bought a Plus controller for the 1000 nit screen. And now I’m looking at the Mavic 3 Pro for that triple camera set up though I hmay go with the Mini 4 Pro just to set it up for OOP. Took her out over the ocean 1/4 mile yesterday. Man you can’t even glance at the screen that far out. lol This evening I took it out way over 1/4 and while those nav lights on the Phantom aren’t good enough for the FAA 3 mile anti collision requirement, they sure stand out on a dark night over the ocean.
Despite it being there, there is no L in DeKalb. We just don't say it :) I worked at a credit union at the mall for awhile back in 2013. Some of the places you mention: The Applebees closed a long time ago. Even when I was there, it had been closed for at least a few years. Chick-Fil-A had been gone for a long time too. The only thing open in the food court was a popcorn place, a Chinese place (which was really good), and Wendy's. Most of the stores were no name places. Macy's was on their way out, Ross had just moved out. Challenges was about the only place getting any real business. That and Play it Again Sport somehow, but that place rocked. Just really wild seeing somewhere I was at every single day for years finally gone. To see it in this state is just wild. But there was no bringing it back.
My grandmother work there at Rich's she took us as kids all the time I ate it that Applebee's in 2010 this is the first time I've seen it since I think the only thing over there now is the Golden corral
No, that is North Dekalb mall. I live near South Dekalb mall and it is still minimally in use by what seems like Money Launderers because there are so many Sports clothing and Jewelry stores in there.
How do the Visual Line of Sight rules apply for FPV drones, in general? Obviously, there is no way you or a guy next to you outside can see the drone. I'm not 107 certified, and not trying to Karen you- I'm just curious.
so in my state, we do have a basic law on flying drones over someone else's property that i find to be pretty common sense. its not really a trespass law its more handled as invasion of ones privacy. so for instance suppose ken heron lives in Wisconsin like i do. suppose that every day, ken, hottie that he is, decides to sun bath out on his deck in a thong. suppose now that i fly over ken herons house. if i am flying over kens house to for instance take a picture of something on horizon, and ken is only just out there, its no problem in Wisconsin. so ken lives between me and the river. i love to take video of the river. i can fly over kens house when hes out there sun bathing. however if i am flying over kens house because i know hes out there, and i think the world needs to see the video, its invading someones privacy and i could be fined. the exact verbiage i am not sure of but its along the lines of its not lawful in Wisconsin if you are flying over someones house with the intent of videoing them in a place they can reasonably expect privacy. so if i am flying over kens yard to get video of him naked? i hope hes at least wearing some clothing, and its against the law in Wisconsin. if i am just flying over because i have to go over his house to get to the subject, then he STILL better have clothing on, but its not illegal because i am not flying over his house to video him of course for the coppers? intent is pretty wide open for interpretation. the idea of the rule in this case is utterly reasonable
Of course privacy laws are different for private dwellings. It's still very subjective, however. The courts have to prove intent. I will be sure to wear the smallest bathing suit possible when you fly over. 😜👍
I lived in Gwinnett for a few years, the roads are certainly smoother than Dekalb's, but I absolutely HATED driving anywhere, because it's just one stoplight after another and stop and go traffic at all hours of the day. It's gotten too big for its road system. If HWY-78 was actually a controlled access highway the whole way it might be bearable, but I'm pretty sure Sugarloaf Pkwy is just doomed to have terrible traffic.
It's only trespassing if you get caught!
Awesome Video! Glad you were able to use some of our footage to help with the video!!

Looked like a perfect day and place for FPV :)
About to dive into my newly purchased Avata 2 with the one hand controller. Now have an inventory of 3 separate drones! I LOVE the addiction!!!

I wish I had an opportunity to see the place before it closed. The Glory Days of the mall are truly over now. 🥲
Ya'll have just to much fun. I get dizzy just watching Ya'll. Love ya'll pioneers of FPV. Keep on flying my friends. With much ❤️

North Dekalb Mall. Many memories of it.
Used to fly my drone around that mall. My first flight was in their parking lot. Ah memories.

Well, this was the demolition in progress. It was being torn down. The site is now razed to the ground.

Wow thank you very much for the information! Yeah, it is very strange to see a place that's so familiar fall into ruin.
Don't forget Burlington Coat Factory was one of the last big retailers that left, moved to Stonecrest, then I guess went under after that.
@@BoDiddly I totally forgot about them. I knew it was bad when Ross moved out.
I helped put tile in some of the stores in that mall when it was built
Wow, that is cool.
Yo
My grandmother work there at Rich's she took us as kids all the time I ate it that Applebee's in 2010 this is the first time I've seen it since I think the only thing over there now is the Golden corral
Yes, the Golden Corral and some other business on that same side! I never remember the name because I only go there for the Golden Corral...lol!
Very Sad what's happening in America!!
Progress is sad? Malls like this are obsolete because retailing has changed. People don't go to malls any more because they don't need to.
I live down the street from this mall. I wasn't sure if it was possible to fly it due to security.
Analytics!
What an adventure!
Man i would've loved to take all those steel i-beams . Lots of good scrap there.
I saw twisters at the movie theater there.
Oh wow! Now the place looks like it was hit with a tornado.
Looks like fun👍 I saw either the same douche mobile or one just like it up in Wisconsin back in may(I have pictures maybe I’ll E-mail them).
Let me see that thang.

I used to go to that mall in college to eat chic fil a and go to the game store.
It looks like it used to be a pretty cool place.

No trespassing laws on drones. Can you fly into a strangers house as long as you don't touch anything lol
The only problem is that laws are up to interpretation

How do you still manage to find a freestyle pilot that has not even tried HD link? :)
There's plenty of analog only pilots out there.
@@KenHeron I know a few as well but they all have friends who have forced them to try at least one of the HD systems at some point.
