For a man into his 70s !! Wow Don has taken excellent care of himself Fit and healthy but has matured into a strikingly handsome gentleman, and I'm a straight man myself . Great to see Don looking so well and really pleased to see Rebel Ridge at the top of the Netflix charts. Interesting that the big screen adaptation of Miami Vice with Farrell and Fox was glossed over and ignored in this interview. That movie had its moments visually and stylistically, but really suffered with its pacing and lack of chemistry between the leads. The TV show is remembered for its music, fashion, action and aesthetic, but people forget just how well written and acted it was. The chemistry between Don and Phillip Michael Thomas was extraordinary and the supporting cast was outstanding. It’s more than the visuals and the style, the show had real heart and emotion. In terms of a ‘reboot’, I’m not sure about it. It’s such an iconic series and so intrinsically linked to that incredible decade, that I’m not sure bringing it back, presumably in the present day would work. Of course, I’d love to see Don and the cast reunite but it is there any real reason beyond nostalgia for it to happen? Unless you have a set up where say, Crockett or Tubbs son or daughter is murdered and that leads to them reuniting, which in turn leads them back into the Miami underworld…? Something like that could work, but if it’s going to happen it needs to happen quickly and as Don suggests, there’s a lot of ownership and IP copyright issues to navigate. Regardless of what does or doesn’t happen, the original series will always be one of the best, influential and entertaining shows ever made. Not a bad legacy to leave.
Glossed over indeed! Seen Mann’s MV opening night. Pretty much hated it. All the years later I have rewatched it maybe 6-8 more times. I now tolerate it a best! I called it Mann’s movie mache! Chemistry? None of the characters had ANY with each other! Even the romance lacked real chemistry. It was a dark film and also lacked sunny beach Miami! I’m a pretty big Mann fan, too. I’d love to see another shot at it or even a series run. Johnson & PMT could appear and play supporting roles but rehashing at their age not feasible. Don, pitch the idea already! I’m sure with your connections and cash flow Netflix would love to run it!
Miami Vice can be brought back with Crockett being the boss of a new MV who'll learn that sometimes the old way's are needed to serve and protect. But you're definitely going to need the Mann for it to really work.
Loved Don Johnson for most of my life, and am so thrilled he's still so active!! I truly hope if there is some kind of reboot, Sonny is always on a boat, running, cruising, fishing...Miami Vice is a world that cannot be brought back. Doing any continuation of anything from then is going to feel too incongruous. Who actually leads the same life with the same habits they had 40 years ago? Sail Sonny around the world, Cigarette boat races, maybe a yacht party. (Remember, you LOVE brunch😂😂😂)
I'm watching this movie on Netflix right now and I have to say it's been a long time since I've seen such an exciting and good movie. The characters and story are brilliant. It's not overplayed, the focus isn't on the shootings, that's why it's so good. It would be nice to see a film like this, and Don is very characterful, a great production!
I wrote a script for a Miami Vice movie that ties up all of the loose ends from the series. I will be in Miami for the 40th Anniversary of Miami Vice this week if anyone is interested.
I recall, Don Johnson from way back and he was in a few episodes of Eight is Enough as the oldest sister Mary's boyfriend and she moved out of the family home to go live with him. And Don had a mustache then.

Even if its a better ending for the original 80's show. I also want Nash Bridges back. The TV show relaunch was good, but nothing was made after that. He did say if ratings were high enough that he would not mind doing more episodes.
Don Johnson was the most iconic actor of the 80’s. MIAMI VICE was the best cop series on TV. The best cast…. The best guest stars the best music and great boats and cars.🌴
I think Miami Vice would work perfectly as a Telltale style episodic video game. That way it could even be set during the original run, with the cast back to provide voice work.
No matter how hard you try, you can never duplicate the 80s. That time period had its ambience, feeling, environment. There's no way to replicate that in our modern overpopulated environment with an ethnically different framework. It is why any other attempt to bring back Miami Vice in a form mimicking the original fails.
For such a project, the world of cinema has so many competent, qualified people to recreate an atmosphere, places, sets, clothes, accessories... It's ambitious, yes, but it's really worth it to revive this atmosphere so typical of the 80s, with their visual, scenic, musical impact... A real time capsule of the twentieth century in the first quarter of the 21st ! For my part, I have a terrible desire to see that again, being part of generation X, I am at the heart of the 80s.
I would like to see Don Johnson reprise his role from Miami Vice, but in a darker mode. Let him have the smarts to solve the crimes, with a younger chap to do the heavy lifting. (Tubbs son perhaps?) However, have a backstory where Sonny is disgusted with the legal system from Tubbs killer going free, and let the story imply that he secretly eliminates the occasional bad guy that is getting off on technicalities. - Keep the audience guessing whether he is actually killing them or not. Most cases, they would solve the crime and get justice, but on the rare (each 3rd or so episode) occasion, the bad guy gets out of jail, and is not prosecuted due to an evidence chain of custody problem, or killing the witness off, etc. Then have the bad guy turn up dead, with Sonny always near the crime scene....Just enough visuals to make the viewers think he is killing them, but not really disclosing it until a couple of seasons. (He could wind up being the one, or it could have an unforeseen plot twist where his partner, Tubbs son is actually doing it for vengeance for his dad. (or it could be recurrences of Sonny Burnett doing the crimes, as a split personality, with the good Sonny not even being aware.) - There are tons of options to work with on something like this. I think the idea has legs - (At least I would watch it every week) Maybe Mr. Johnson will see this and pitch the idea....🤞
Make a spin off with Dakota as Crocket's daughter set in the modern day, but still looking like the neon 1980s Miami Vice world. A 2024 that looks like 1984.
Crockett could be Chief of Police in Miami and Tubbs could be the Vice Lieutenant. Crockett's son Billy could be a Vice detective. Tubbs's long lost son resurfaces and he and Billy become Crockett and Tubbs 2.0. But, Don Johnson and PMT have to appear in every episode ❤
@@lindacollins903also with Tubbs returning from Bronx. His past has come back to haunt him. The Kingpin of the New York mob has sent his men to takedown Tubbs in Miami. A Tubbs spin-off series would be nice that deals with his time cleaning up the streets of Bronx.
That would be fantastic, there's so much you could do with that, like something like they have a strained relationship for some reason, and maybe they don't make it apparent as to why, and the audience has to speculate as to why there's friction between them until later on when it's finally revealed why. That would be so interesting and well worth watching 👍
She's got her own name and talent. Carrying all the 80s forward would feel too weird. What person do you know is still in the same place, same people, same job for 40 years? Sonny became disenchanted and did the right thing by moving on and away. Without Caroline his real anchor, he is just a free spirit in chains. She won't be back. He lives life fully. He needs the rush and excitement. Being a stoic Chief of Police in this new world just isn't right. Commissioner? Come on. No suit, no desk, no politics. Sonny is THE LAST of a dying breed of cigarette smoking, Jack shooting, man addicted to the hustle and high stakes. Tubbs is a chameleon. He likes to be comfortable. He was a cop because it found him. His brother was one. He followed. Tubbs I can see going into the politics of crime, being a Commissioner cushy leader for the community.

I can see Don as the chief, playing the LT role like Olmos did back then, reigning them in or letting them go crazy.
Don has to come back to Miami ❤
Don was always spooky good at playing a bad guy.
