I don’t watch this video often, but every time I have to fire someone I watch this video before hand. It reminds me that I didn’t do a good job hiring but calms me down before firing someone. Thanks Pat. 6 YEER old video - still valuable.
Good Video Patrick. I went to a Brian Tracy seminar years ago. It was a very good seminar. And there is one thing I still remember that I have learned it at the seminar: Always fire people on Monday. I always did it on Friday, so I did not understand why. Tracy explained: "Being fired is stressful. If you fire someone on Friday, they spend the whole weekend being depressed and feeling sorry for themselves. People feel more lonely during the weekend. If you fire them on Monday, they can start immediately working on getting a new job and it all feels less painful". It was an eye-opener for me. When needed I do it on Monday ever since.

It's not always a red flag. My gap,,,,,, was from a Car Accident on Saint Patrick's Day. I was a Bridesmaid in a Wedding, the Matron of Honor and I were doing last minute shopping and we were hit by a Drunk Driver. One of my injuries was TMJ, but it wasn't figured out until a couple of years later because TMJ has symptoms that can look like another medical issue. If an Employer makes the mistake of hiring somebody that "doesn't fit"" . . It is the employers responsibility to try and ""make it right"' ..... No employee should ever have to pay for the ""Employers'' mistake.... The "Employers Mistake'' can cost the firef employee their roof over their head. It could deplete their "Child's "College Tuition''. If the fired Employee has a health issue ex cancer ... Well they lose their Insurance why,. Because of the ""Employers Mistake''' That is unacceptable.
It will backfire at you anyways ! ( I once was fired by my former boss - my boss once was fired by me ( the very same moment ) it had to give -up its pottery factory , + its 43 thousands Euros Peugeot family car + 2.ooo Euros ,,, and today it works as a busboy and janitor in a Portuguese pub .
@Chowder5.........Ha Ha, that's a good joke, but all jokes aside, you're gonna git yo ass fired someday too, and so will your boss's ass ! Now that's funny !
When an employer is unsatisfied with the employee it is a sign not only that he is not the best worker for the job, but also that this is not the best job for the worker. The good of both parties is that the worker should move on and find the position that is best for him.
There are decent people that are simply to good to fit into a toxic back stabbing gossip pool of #2s. More often than not, it's not the Employee, but the Employees or the Employer at the above environment mentioned above..
I was fired many times before. I'm 30 ,at least 6 times I was fired. it was my fault I should have chosen my passion to study English at university, then start teaching English to my Chinese friends, and make a living as English teacher. but instead I choose what I really hated super expensive nursing course and medical course to study at university, then ended up dropping out of university, and still had my university student loans need to pay , renting apartment outside my parents place. and have only a high school diploma walking around and my English sucks , not good enough to make a living by teaching English, going to jobs interview I hated . and have horrible working attitude, so I was fired many times.been working on my innerself ,with a successful positive attitude change myself to be the best version of myself. hope I will be really successful and really rich in the near future.
Hire slow is what shouldn've been done. Now i got to deal with so much more... waste of time, energy and money is what i had. No replacement or nothing 💔
Great Video. It's always causing me a sleepless night before I reach the decision to fire someone. Sometimes tending to focus too much on their strengths and tend to keep people too long in the team what for the business creates most of the time not a good outcome.
Pat, its been 3 years since you released this video... now you don’t have to fire anyone anymore.. all these young snowflakes quit before they are sacked..
I'll try not to go on but in my last full time role (I was there for four years). I could not believe what was or rather not involved in the job. From the outset performing my role took little effort. Majority of my time 75%+ was spent idle and in my mind there is no way that I should be able to keep my job if 75% of the time I was not engaged in doing any work. I would work alone and with little or no supervision to explain that. When I got fed up I decided to take the initiative and innovate processes in the work flow. My efforts were then discouraged. From early on I would complain which later became a habit. People getting hired at higher rates than me when I was the highest qualified member of the team, unfair warnings about inconsequential issues and things that I had no direct influence over. So it came to the last week and I received a warning for not reporting a failure by a partner that was of no tangible business impact. I was fed up working in a job where I was given no opportunity to progress my career. Spent more time eating lunch than doing work most days and the fact that if I am idle 75% of the time that is 75% of potential not being harnessed through my employment. I had enough. The only thing ever done to respond to criticism was to enhance the problem. My life was miserable at this point and I had come to the conclusion that if I had instead committed to study I would have a PhD by this time and on the other hand all I have to show for it is a low paying permanent role and little or no tangible experience that can be used to find a new job. I got out, I quit before the week was over I was so relieved never having to go back to a place that had become my hell for four years. In hindsight it was a mistake not to quit the moment I realized that I was literally wasting my time being there. It has been one year and seven months to the day, and while I have spent one year in full time study my work has been casual and very difficult because of the weight problem I have developed over the four years in the job. I was once a very active and healthy person but now I am a shadow of my former self and I am confused as to how to regain my past habits. So finally, I wonder it is all well and good to fire someone but what happens when those that should be fired are running the show, no amount of complaining and contributing can change that and unless you can catch someone red handed in terms of perpetuating an offence there is little that can be done. I should have never taken the job - interesting side note is that I have never been hired full time for a job I have applied for. I feel that I was taken advantage to a great degree.
Nice video again! Congratulations on how your channel is growing Pat. I really look forward to your videos on all those three days of the week. Id really like a video on how exactly was your social life or how did you manage it when you were working 80+ hours weeks. You also seem like a truly relentless guy so I was wondering if you could share some of your real experiences as you were growing your business in early stages where you solved problems by sheer determination when there was no other way out. Awesome work again. Never stop making these videos. Thanks.
"The company isn't the problem, the person is." Thats not always the case, more often then not in my experience, small businesses are ran by people who dont have the slightest clue what they're doing. Its like they're somehow managing to fail their way up the ladder. Companies are comprised of people, and people aren't perfect. For example: The company I work for hired a guy two days ago THEY KNEW wasn't the right man for the job. They never should have even gave him a tour of the building, but they hired him anyways and ended up terminating him 24 hours later. Wasting both his time, as well as their own. Quite frankly, that pissed me off.
I always hire and fire personally and face to face. Both employees and contractors. It shows courtesy and respect to them. Firing someone is like removing adhesive tape off hairy skin. It’s painful especially when you like the employee, you have invested time and money into training, or you cannot afford to keep I have a written policy listing what will result in immediate termination and a three strike rule. When I have a problem with an employee or contractor I take them aside, discuss the problem, expectations to resolve it and the consequences and how soon termination may result. Example next time we have this conversation you’re fired.always have a witness, record and document the discussion. Before firing someone can one take the route of telling the person what the problem is, and ask them to fix it, or is it just impossible for them to be compatible with the company?
So I fired someone for not ever reaching the targets that he was given (very achievable). That was 2 months ago. I just got a letter from the department of labor demanding that I pay him 50% of everything he has ever earned from my company... He was paid about $5500 and now the government is demanding I pay him another $2800.
I 100% agree. In fact, most Managers who were managers were never trained to be a good manager. They just have the title. I experienced this in the Corporate world.
Pat, this is really good content. I love how you went through the examples of reviewing their past, their experiences and red flags. This is really informative. I made a lot of mistakes in hiring and also costs our company $$$. Fired quick and learned fast!! Enjoyed the content as always. Keep it up! *Also, much of what you discussed is required by HR compliances. I would include that firing requires state-level /& federal laws for employers to adhere to and that all termination letters are signed by employer and employees. HR guidelines can also be found on state websites and IRS.gov. Good luck Entrepreneurs!!
As the Employer you have the obligation to "make it right''. Oh I'm sorry Its my mistake I hired you''. Bye good luck with your mortgage your rent your spouses chemotherapy treatment .....UNACCEPTABLE...
Greetings Mr. Pat my staff consist of my 3 children 21, 18, 17 and 2 other employees. I so tired of working with my children. However, I trying so hard to be patient with them to teach them the business so one day they can run the business. We've been in business for 6 yrs coming up on 7 yrs. in March/17. They are a bad influence on the two outside employees. Any advice?
How do you explain an employer your previous boss was really really a problem? I mean it seams to me that the employee is always on the loosing end regardless of whether you quit or got fired from somewhere.
Well, think of this scenario from the interviewer perspective. How do they know you're telling the truth about your boss being the problem of your last job and not YOU being the problem? It's not so easy question to go by.
TheGreatslyfer How does the interviewer know that they're NOT telling the truth? Your answer isn't an answer, because benefit of the doubt has to cut both ways... There are some people, who are not cut out to be in business, or managers, because they don't really know what they're doing. But for some reason, they are, and that means they're in a position beyond their capability to truly manage. So it's like Antonio said; There are times, when the boss or company is legitimately in the wrong. But try telling that to a potential employer, and it just comes up as a red flag...
"Your answer isn't an answer" bitch you just said it was an answer. But yes, it does go both ways, but I am still unsure of whether to trust that employee or not, cause in that situation that is my business, so I better be good in determining who's lying and who's not.
how would an employer find a good worker who had the problem of landing in bad, hostile working environments? basically no one questions employers just as employees are being questioned.
Hey there's a stock. Chek. Theres better stocks on the market, but not that I understand. I c it going to 30 minimum, no higher then 80. Might want to look at it. Its a money 💰 bag.
Comment #6, What do you think about management who says "I only need to tell you once." They watched me make the mistake multiple times and built up everything to one point that it was just surprising and discouraging. Scary topic. I think it's a logical and respectful way to do it.
I said something similar about rejection letters; Dear Applicant, Though you are a very qualified individual - at this time you are not what we are looking for; Thank you for applying and best of luck with your endeavor to find a company team structures to join. Sincerely Blah Blah The same holds true for firing/termination. Dave though you are a great person- you are going in a different direction than that of the company. Therefore the company is letting you go and we wish you luck in your new endeavors! Now a hard @ss one would be; Dave your deplorable actions do not reflect the company and therefor you are terminated and any and all ties with the company are severed- good luck on your new path. Claire Underwood in House Of Cards was slow at firing Maryann Plunkett. Plunkett dragged her feet in creating a list of people who needed to be terminated because she let her emotions get in the way, and because of this she failed a leadership test as well and caused her own self to get terminated.
"You are going in a different direction than that of the company." is the biggest corporate BS, and manipulative line ever. It means you don't want to deal with the problems or help the individual to actually improve. It's your means of not dealing with something because you are too lazy to address the problem.
i have a question that is the opposite to this talk. it is "how to form a team?" my friend are helpful but they are not the committed type i think and i dont think that its healthy for the business also to have a friend as a partner since friendship will be in between! so how do you thing is the best or most effective way to form a team whether as partnership (mainly) or employees? PS: i think it would be a great idea if you make a video on it.
Funny story. I was fired by my previous employer for a bs made up reason even though I was a top performer (my boss saw me as a threat). I was going to suck it up and let it go until the secretary sent me an email telling me I was fired and cc'd the entire company. That's when I decided to go into business for myself...competing against them.
Thank you former employer for NOT listening to this guy! Yay! The department of labor and many of my former co-workers made bank! They closed down a whole branch location and lost $750K Don't treat your employees like crap and you won't get sued
You should make another video in response to this one called, "How To Professionally Accept Getting Sued." I'm in the process right now of suing my previous employer for wrongful termination.

I always hire and fire personally and face to face. Both employees and contractors. It shows courtesy and respect to them.
Firing someone is like removing adhesive tape off hairy skin. It’s painful especially when you like the employee, you have invested time and money into training, or you cannot afford to keep
I have a written policy
listing what will result in immediate termination and a three strike rule.
When I have a problem with an employee or contractor I take them aside, discuss the problem, expectations to resolve it and the consequences and how soon termination may result. Example next time we have this conversation you’re fired.always have a witness, record and document the discussion.
If you decide it’s time, do it quickly respectfully, and without hesitation; that way the pain is over quickly for everyone.

Hey there's a stock. Chek. Theres better stocks on the market, but not that I understand. I c it going to 30 minimum, no higher then 80. Might want to look at it. Its a money 💰 bag.
What do you think about management who says "I only need to tell you once."
They watched me make the mistake multiple times and built up everything to one point that it was just surprising and discouraging.
Scary topic. I think it's a logical and respectful way to do it.
Any Manager that says "I only need to tell you once''. Is not fit to lead fish swimming down stream
Great tips. Thank you
Ive been trying to fire my gf for awhile now might need to go to hr with this one
Tons of thanks!
Great Video! Thank you for sharing
happy birthday
I said something similar about rejection letters;
Dear Applicant,
Though you are a very qualified individual - at this time you are not what we are looking for; Thank you for applying and best of luck with your endeavor to find a company team structures to join.
Sincerely
Blah Blah
The same holds true for firing/termination.
Thank you!
i have a question that is the opposite to this talk. it is "how to form a team?" my friend are helpful but they are not the committed type i think and i dont think that its healthy for the business also to have a friend as a partner since friendship will be in between!
so how do you thing is the best or most effective way to form a team whether as partnership (mainly) or employees?
PS: i think it would be a great idea if you make a video on it.
tks all way frome monterrey mexico . your video was verry informative
Don't we have a podcast..? so that it would be much easier to learn through audio.
GREAT VIDEO!
My daughter is 4 and it will be 40 more years until she has a boyfriend..... I have that dream too.
You're crazy to wish her to be single until 44 years old.
more like 10

Sounds good
This was a great vid
When I got fired the HR woman seemed to have enjoyed what she was doing.
Gold
thank you
Funny story.
How about when to fire someone?
After watching this video, my wife walks in, and I told her: "You're fired!!!"
HOOT YOU ARE AWESOME
This video came to me today when I was planning on firing someone. How do you fell about gossip.
Dang, good for ya! Hope it went well if you did it yet.
Neither one of you should be allowed to be managers when you can't even properly spell.
Gossip is bullying.
I feel like texting them is the best option 🤷🏽
Props to you guys ;)
You should make another video in response to this one called, "How To Professionally Accept Getting Sued." I'm in the process right now of suing my previous employer for wrongful termination.
And then you are always poor
This is a great post. Thanks.
I dont even own a company...still i'm here
The man has lost a lot of weight...looking great pat!
+Ville Vendeta Thanks VV.
Thanks for the advices, I want to add some 'sandwich method' which might help more
Poor Mario, he was used as an example but I think he was being fired for real.
When you fire someone you are reaching into their bank account and stealing their money.
This is an example of how sleazy lawyers give advice to sleazy bosses on how to be sleazy.
Nice!
