The Stadium Where They Forgot The Roof - MetLife Stadium - Home of the New York Jets and Giants

  • MetLife Stadium is the massive 82,500 seat open air stadium that’s home to the New York Jets and New York Giants. Built at a cost of $1.6 billion dollars, it was the most expensive stadium ever built in the United States at the time of its completion. Today we’re going to be learning the history of the stadium, its features, and ultimately its shortcomings that make it a mid-tier NFL stadium today. Before we dive in don’t forget to subscribe for more NFL history videos! Let’s get started.
MetLife Stadium’s life began when the old Giants Stadium started showing its age. Wanting a new stadium and with the possibility of the 2012 Olympics being awarded to the city, a new facility called West Side Stadium was proposed to be built on the island of Manhattan. The stadium would have been built over train tracks in the Hudson Yards section of the city. The Jets and Giants agreed to share the stadium and split costs, but the proposal was ultimately scrapped due to widespread opposition due to the significant public funding that would have been necessary. A site was ultimately chosen near the historic Giants Stadium in what would become known as the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
The stadium was designed to combine the classic look of a traditional outdoor stadium, while bringing in sleek steel and glass elements that could be found on the skyscrapers of New York City. The stadium is designed to be easily configurable with an NFL logo at the center instead of a Jets or Giants logo, and “hot swappable” end zones that take around 18 hours to switch over between teams. Although the stadium was originally designed to host Final Four games and other indoor events, funding for a roof failed, leaving the stadium in its current somewhat incomplete state.
Feature wise the stadium features seating for 82,500 fans, with 10,005 club level seats, and 218 luxury boxes for VIP fans. Other features include large HD video boards, and special lighting on the top of the stadium that displays both Jets green and Giants blue at night. These lights are powered by solar panels as part of a green technology partnership with NRG Energy company. MetLife Stadium is also one of the most well connected stadiums with access to the New Jersey rail service, bus service, and of course a large parking lot for fans driving in. Perhaps my favorite fun fact is MetLife Stadium boasting the shortest stands to field length of only 46 feet ti the 50 yard line. Because of many of these unique features the stadium was named the Greenest Stadium in the NFL by the EPA in 2009, and the overall Venue of the Year in 2017 by Stadium Business Summit.
The positive reception was capped off with hosting Super Bowl 48 in 2010 where the Seattle Seahawks defeated the Denver Broncos in the third coldest Super Bowl of all time at 49 degrees due to the stadium having no roof as previously mentioned.
Despite the early positive reception and hosting a Super Bowl, recent reception to the stadium has been mixed to negative. In the time that the stadium was built, it has received little to no updates aside from the new lighting package. There have been calls to add the original proposed roof, although no solid plan has ever been proposed. With the Giants/Jets lease up in 2024, one or both of the teams could leave the stadium, but due to its massive cost this will never happen. With MetLife Stadium hosting a World Cup game in 2026, perhaps there will be renewed interest in refreshing the stadium with new technology and video boards.

MetLife Stadium seems to get some improvements every year. They've improved the train service since it hosted the super bowl, They've added more restrooms, They expanded the parking, They even improved the traffic by expanding certain roads. Now they are improving the field conditions by replacing the old turf with state of the art turf which is one of the newest fields that lessens injury, But They always seem to use natural grass for soccer events.

i heard the reason why the design is so bland is because the jets owner wanted a modern design and the giants owner wanted an old school design so they had to compromise. hence making it look bland. also the colors are neutral inside since two teams play there so they cant pick one color code. if they can figure out away to change the exterior design which wouldnt require a demolition and change the color codes between giants and jet colors it will be a above average stadium. they also should have built the new stadium but maintained the same field. that adds history.

As a Giants fan while a roof would be welcomed by some I personally don't think it fits the teams identity as a traditional and legacy franchise. If anything is to change however it's the team logo being displayed at midfield, if the also turfed SoFi is able to do it with the Rams and Chargers so can MetLife with the Giants and Jets.

New stadiums like SoFi, Allegiance, U.S. Bank and Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz stadium are all great, But they're all being built smaller these days. If history has taught us anything - Small stadiums with a roof don't pan out well in the long run no matter how well the design of the building is. This is why the future will recognize MetLife stadium as the best stadium in the NFL. It gives fans what they really want. To most fans - Large spacious outdoor venues are preferable than small overcrowded venues with a roof. Grand spacious comfort beats World class design.
There are reasons why MetLife stadium is the leading candidate to host the 2026 World Cup Finals.
There are reasons why the Giants had a higher crowd attendance than the Cowboys last year.

Is it possible to add a roof based on the way it was built. I watched the group breaking Ceremony and it was clear that it was gonna open stadium.. They had the model of it on the Ground Breaking Ceremony. It was built to be open roof stadium. I bet some designers and engineers could figure it out bur the cost of adding a roof especially if they need to modify the top of the stadium to support the weight of the roof. The cheapest way would be just put in roof on not a retractable. They could use some of the clear material seen at other stadiums Like the Falcons stadium. If you add a roof they when it gets cold where the fans sit to watch the game would need to be heated. I bet if they tried to build a roof it would cost to what they paid for the stadium due to rising costs and we have Super high inflation were under bet it would be A Billion dollar cost. NYC is the biggest city in the world and should hold Super Bowls. Yes they hosted one Super bowl but it won't ever get another unless they add a roof. I like the idea of the Roof having those panels that let sunlight in. Having the Super bowl in NYC would help businesses in the area. I don't think they will ever pur a roof on it I bet it's not being discussed at all by the powers that be, that who could start the process of talking about. It and looking into ideas and see how much it would cost. Cold weather teams should build domes with retractable roofs Giants, Jets and Buffalo are prime examples. If Buffalo would have left for Toronto they would have played in a Dome with a retractable roof which hasn't been opened in over a decade. They would have played in Sky Dome. Other. Teams that built a newx stadium between 2000 to 2022 and teams like Buffalo who are building new stadium in the next 5 to 7 years should goto retractable roof stadiums.. You couldn't pay me enough to sit in the freeing outfoor stadium's from December 1sti till end of season. Here are teams that should have retractable roof stadium's. Giants, Jets, Denver, New England, Buffalo, Bengals, Cleveland browns,Chicago Bears, Pittsburgh Steelers. I don't think stadiums Like Lambeau Stadium, Arrow Head home of the Kansas City Chiefs. Those are classic legendary stadiums who have been around a longtime and they keep up doing Renevations. Its a waste of money to build a Stadium without a roof. In cold weather they could still hold more concerts and indoor activities, Motor cross motorcycle racing. Plus things like Monster trucks, musical concerts also like David Copperfield. NCAA tournament games. They can host college bowl games. I can't list everything they could be used for. How abot racing go carts or Open wheel Sprint cars they could host something close to the Chili bowl I don't think they should move the location of the Chili Bowl. Something similar to the Chili Bowl That is all I can think of. Would Love to hear any ideas of events they could have been hosted by in Buffalo if they played in a done. Buffalo isn't getting a dome stadium what a loss. Yes it cost more to build NFL stadium with Roof domes profits are much higher,@@
