🚨 UPDATE: Tascam just informed me that the Power Supply DOES NOT come with the PortaCapture X8. It is sold separately, so that and the Bluetooth Adapter are sold separately. Sorry about that everyone tascam.com/us/product/ak-bt1/top tascam.com/us/product/ps-p520u/top tascam.com/us/product/ak-dr11gmkiii/top
It's hard to judge whether RUclips compression is messing up the sound tests or if the X8 is applying DSP or DNR to the test recordings because they all sound warbly. Thanks for the extensive review.
Yea thats the difficult part. I can only do so much when it comes to Exporting the video and audio in the highest quality but then RUclips I believe compresses it to like 48kHz which sucks but I try to make it as easy for you guys to hear the difference and quality. I'm glad that you liked the video at least 😁
@@Tech_HD1 To get around this, when testing audio quality record in 48k. Or you can record in 192 then convert the audio into 48k then upload to youtube. Yes youtube compresses everything lol. That ole cheap mp3 effect will always happen like that in automatic conversions. For example: OBS, you set it's settings to 44k yet your system audio is set to 48. You will get the same warbly effect. Thought I would mention all that. This is how I get around the youtube compression. Just make sure you convert or downsample yourself in an audio editor before upload. This method has never failed me.
If you record at a higher quality and the mix on your end is done properly, once RUclips compresses it down, you can still get a glimpse of portacapture's sound ability vs you recording initially at lower setting on the tascam, so it's best to record at the highest quality to sort of circumvent the dynamic loss.
@@Tech_HD1 There's absolutely no point in recording at anything higher than 48KHz unless your into large file sizes with no audible benefit. At 48KHz you are well past Nyqust and any online platform will convert it down anyway resulting in potential aliasing and other artifacts from the sample rate conversion. Try doing a blind test with 48KHz and 96/192KHz, and you will find that you are not able to tell the difference and your computer will thank you!
A very comprehensive review of the Tascam portacapture X8, thank you. As an addition, I would have liked more information about the computer interface and to answer questions like, "How to import audio what was made on a DAW so it can be mixed with audio to be later created on the X8?" and, "How do I export audio to a DAW?"
Had a pre-order in with BH since November. Turns out Amazon had them in stock! Just received mine last night. Been using DR40 for 5 years on my wedding films (to capture audio from the DJ or the band!)… I cannot wait to use this thing for weddings going forward!!!!
I already commented with my personal RUclips account, haha, but I think it must be stated again how this is one of the best reviews of this out there. Especially appreciate the use of testing the Rode Podmic (Which I have & love) with it as a big reason I am getting this is to do an audio diary/interview of a dear family member of mine whose memory is beginning to fade and is up there in years, so the need to document their life is crucial more than ever, and I accept nothing less than excellent to get the gear to make it happen. It's also a tight space, so a field recorder seems to be the right tool. Secondary reasons include pocasting overall and DJ set/game livestreams. Great job again!
Recording 192/32 is overkill for video use, so I would not reccommend doing it just because you can. 32 float is very usefull, but 44.1 or 48 kHz is more than enough when you record speech. You will be low cutting 12-14kHz anyway, so a lot of headroom left there. 192/32 is usefull when you want to field record or do some recordings that will be heavily post-processed. Hood to have, but not necessery thing. Great recorder anyways, I'm looking forward to buy it.
Thank you very very much for this comprehensive video about Protacapture X8. I just got myself one, and after looking at your video, using the Protacapture X8 will be a breeze. Also, I love how you test the sound in each app. Very good job indeed.
ASMR is more than a weird thing. As for the TASCAM Portacapture X8, I would like to praise the guys, they made an excellent device, the large display is simply gorgeous, plus 32-bit recording, powerful and quiet amplifiers. I would love to test it too. A good video review is all detailed and shown.
Lmao just not used to doing ASMR. I listen to it all the time but I never tried it myself lol. Thank you! I'm glad you liked the video and yea, the X8 is a BEAST

Great review - and it comes at the right time! I just wanted to buy the F6 now but I think I will wait until I can test the x8. Looks like that's a great tool for field recording.
Saved to the play list. Great job. 1 question, can you record to a mobile phone as a backup, since the X8 has only one sd card? Thanks. (Not one person has recorded a band on RUclips with the X8. This a bit dis-concerting ...I wonder why?)
Great review thank you so much. Does the x8 allow for mulitrack recording like in a DAW? In other words, I want to record a vocal track as a separate track on top of say a previous guitar track?
i really appreciate this video! its awesome how you go through everything! I just wish i understood what this stuff is - I am brand new to recording my music and bought one of these. Im such a noob tho i dont even know what EQ settings would be best for recording acoustic guitar.
It should be fine with the SM7B. I tested it with the PodMic and Procaster from Rode and those need a lot of Gain Power too like the SM7B and they both performed great!
Great review!! I'm curious, I mainly use this for recording my acoustic guitar with the on-board mics. This means I have to read upside down when modifying my mic and channel settings. Do you know if Tascam has any intention to allow the user to flip the screen upside down in a future software update?

At the minute 28:18 is super evident the point that I am continuously trying to make about doing audio "tests" of high quality preamp, condenser mics etc. over youtube crappy audio quality. The low level voice test of the reviewer reveals the compression artefacts caused by the stupid 128kbs youtube audio quality (meanwhile you can watch 4k videos...go figure youtube managers) . Even a deaf person would be able to hear that this is NOT audio quality. It is literally impossible at this compression rate to perceive all the goodness that a good high fidelity audio signal can deliver. At least people should make available for download, good quality uncompressed audio file of their tests and make it available for viewers.

The 3-4 hrs was with +48v Phantom Power. I mainly use Shotgun Mics and some Condenser Mics
Hmmm good idea. I'll most likely do that next time lol
I lost interest when you said no 32bit in podcast mode
Yea sorry about that lol
But can't this be overridden if one chooses manual mode instead of podcast mode?
@@russjam Technically yes
thats huge! so is the price...
It ain't that bad, there bigger recorders then that lmao 🤣 And the price was originally gonna be $699 until they last min changed it
@@Tech_HD1 lol, i didn't mean the size. that is a huge change as far as the interface of handhelds. but the price is going to make it hard to market.
@@JohnA000 Ahhhh. Still could've been worse lmao
it doesn't feel as responsive as a touch screen
ASMR is not realy convincing: We too much can hear tne noise reduction defaults
Shit, just bought the tascam dr-40x lol oh well it's alot cheaper ! :)
Lmao the DR-40x is still a great recorder. I used it to record the Walkthrough part of the video with a Shotgun Microphone connected to it. I also made a video on that like 2 Years back if you wanna check it out
@@Tech_HD1 Thanks ok ill check it out

Sorry but your speed of speech is too tiring to go to the end of the tutorial
That's why there a timeline to skip through and watch what you think is important
