Matt, good to know. I used to record weddings also but many, many years ago. Hefting a 70# reel to reel, all of the mics, cables, tripods, you get the idea. I remember one time during a mid summer July at a church with no A/C, windows open. OK the bride and groom are kneeling saying their I do's very softly,I might add. The gain is wide open and I'm straining to hear them on the phones. A worst fear happens, a fire engine drives by and guess what, yea, it happened the siren sounds off. Phones come off right away, VU's are maxed out. Now afterward, I'm home trying to fix this. Days later, I got it. I found another wedding and spliced in the correct passage and no one ever found out. They never knew.
That zoom f3 looks amazing! This Tascam looks amazing but two 32-bit inputs looks like more then enough from my needs. I love that there are so many 32-bit recorders coming out lately.
I have never been a fan of zoom and I find it funny people are now trying Tascam. Long before 32-bit float Tascam on there 60Dmk1 and mkii, 70D and 701D field recorders all have dual recording which means you can record a back up track at a -db at your desire. My Tascam 701D is a beast and when I get the spare cash I might upgrade to this unit, but my hopes are they integrate the 701D with this new X8 technology. Great Review and look forward to more of your videos!
Hi Matt. My questions have nothing to do with the recorder. However, I would like to know ; 1. Do you shoot the whole wedding day? 2.. How do you pick what must be included in the final edit? 3. Do you include pieces from all speeches?
1. Yep all day 2. Choose the parts of the day that best convey who the couple is and their relationship 3. Not always, depends on who talks and what they say
Good initial review Matt, this year the Zoom F2's replaced my Tuscan DR-10L's as main lava and I am using a Zoom F6 for single camera live streaming at present. 32b FP definitely helps loads for the screamers and super quiet brides. I think I might pickup this to replace my Zoom H5 now as I can use it with the built in mics for some recordings or plugin mics as needed.
If you set 24bit recorders to a proper low recording level, there is no difference from a 32bit recording and no quality loss compared to a higher recording level. Real world recordings only require about 60dB dynamic range maximum. Pencil mics and lavaliers have high self noise and that is the only limitation in the recording chain. Studio microphones and special applications need more care. If you think you need 32bit, reduce the recording level by 15dBs and try again.
@@aristotle_4532 Point taken on board thanks, however with the majority of my recordings being at funerals or weddings, I don't have the luxury of rehearsals or testing with those who's voice I will be recording, this is where the FP recordings is beneficial. If live streaming, then it's fine with 24bit as I can control the received audio from the mixer to control an output around the -12db.
So glad you did a video on this! My tascam dr40 is 7 years old and due for an upgrade 😂 I was about to ask in your Facebook group the other day if anyone has gotten it yet! Keep killing it!
Dooood I’ve been using this for a week and it’s AMAZING!!!!! I’ve been selling Kaleb on it for a few days now! So glad to see this unexpected review!!! It’s so perfect for weddings and I’m using it to create my own catalog of foley and ambient sounds!!
@@MastersonMedia I preordered from BH in November and was watching a RUclips review that said they were available on Amazon! I cancelled my BH preorder (which is still not in stock) and got it from Amazon 1 day later! Currently Amazon says it’ll be delivered Jan 31. But Adorama has it in stock along with the Bluetooth module which I also ordered! Get on it, brother!
So I realize there are lots of benefits to recording in 32 bit float. However, one thing that confuses me about recording a feed off an event's sound board: if someone start screaming into the mic and clips the audio, wouldn't that clip within the board as well? If the signal clips upstream from the recorder then it doesn't matter how it's recorded.
You're absolutely correct, which is why I always recommend plugging into the microphone receiver box as well as the sound board. There's usually a quarter inch output on the receiver box that you can use and that bypasses the sound board completely. :)
You can bring up the level of a too-quiet signal made on _any_ digital recorder with the same results. 32-bit Float is not special in this regard. Where you _might_ find it useful is in preserving loud sounds that would otherwise have clipped in a Linear PCM recording. However, realize two things: 1) 24-bit LPCM already provides something like 144dB of dynamic range, which is broad enough to cleanly capture everything from a gnat's fart to a jackhammer. 2) You are always constrained by the circuit in your signal path with the lowest dynamic range. The preamps on most recorders (with ~90dB dyhamic range best case) will crap out (i.e. distort) well before the converters clip, and no amout of floating bits will recover that. In most situations (presuming a 24-bit recorder with decent, quiet preamps) if you set your inputs to peak at around -30 dBFS you'll be able to capture clean dialog and still have enough of a cushion for erratic DJ levels or for when that overenthusiastic, wasted bridesmaid grabs the mic and shrieks at the top of her lungs (been there).
Happy with my Zoom H6, when I see how many things can be setup by pressing buttons or using wheels. Imho its much better than using a display and I'm not talking about using the touch display at all. It may be convenient somewhere, but not in the professional sphere.
Couldn't agree more, I think the worst piece of gear I ever bought was the Zoom H4n. It wasted so much time at weddings right at the busiest time. The H6 was a huge upgrade and it was mainly just for the knobs and built-in attenuators. Bummer that neither of these new recorders has knobs.
I’m using the Zoom f2 for the same purpose. 32 bit float audio. I don’t have a handheld XLR Recorder, but I was looking into the Zoom f6. But with it being $700, this Tascam X8 is looking much better.
will zoom f2 work same way as Tascam x8 if I connect it to DJ's mixer as a backup to record speeches? Looking for something compact without huge screen
Looks like the F3 doesn't have that combo xlr/quarter port though, that's a no go for me. I rarely use it but sometimes I've had to use the quarter port. Maybe my xlr cord was tied up somewhere else or the DJ had some weird non-xlr output that I had to adapt to. I currently use the Dr-60mkii which works good, but it's friggin huge in my bag. Especially with the battery pack attached to it as it only records 4 hours max off of internal battery power, which is risky for weddings. So the 8-9 hours the X8 promises without the use of a battery pack is quite promising! Great review Matt, and the point about the microphone reaching it's max before the recorder is a very interesting point that I've never heard before but makes sense! And shouts out to DJ Durrell from Signature Events!
I film concerts, live theatre and dance shows. It is not uncommon for a someone to be at one level during the audio check and then get much louder during the performance. This is what partially drew me to the Sound Devices Mix Pre 3. It has outstanding analogue limiters that almost function as a compressor. Mine is the first generation of the Mix Pre 3 so it doesn't have the 32 bit float, but it has never been a problem for me.
I have been using the Tentacle Sync Track E recorders. 2 as lav mics and another to plug into the dj board or speaker. 32 bit, small and they all have timecode Sync and a nice app to control all 3 from. I don't need multiple ports for weddings. 1 is fine and a couple of different cords.
I've always used an H6 and split the XLR into two inputs. It's having two separate levels and fantastic. I've been thinking about the f1 because of the flexibility you're talking about here and now zoom has their new XLR f3 I may be in the market for a new recorder as well. Hopefully, the zoom one doesn't have a touch screen.
Great video Matt! Can you do the audio recovery of highs and lows in your own non linear editor of choice? Or do you do you have to use Tascam’s own software?
Have a Deity TC-1 time code generator. (3) Can the Tascam X8 work with the time code jammer? Was going to use time code with the X8 with 32 bit float. Then also feed into the x8 the DJI Lav on the groom and officiant. Each camera will have its own timecode jammer on them. TC-1's. Will this work? Should I forget timecode. I still have the tc-1 in the Amazon box LOL... want to be sure that I can make this work?
Hi Matt, great review as always! One (for me) main feature the F6 & SDMixPre II have, but the Tasacam X8 and Zoom F3 lack is Timecode! Especially when you use Tentacle Sync E and Track E devices the X8 and F3 fall short in jaming timecode. The only work around is to buy an additional Sync E and feed it to a channel for the whole time of recording and this would add up the cost.
@@whoismatt ….which is very limited as you can not sync any cameras with unless you use every camera with a ninja v, which is pointless for wedding videographers.
Does Tascam X6/X8 has some self noise? I mean this "white noise" when everything is quiet and you hear SHSHSHSHSHSHHSSHHS. Is Zoom F3/F6/Mixpre better in this regard?
I have still had audio distort when it is coming from the soundboard too hot. Peaking from a lav or boom is best with these types of recorders but a hot feed from a soundboard will STILL distort.
The form factor is really important for me. The Tascam is not usable as a solo audio guy, in a bag while operating a boom pole. I still choose the zoom f6. In any other case I agree with you that this is the way to go.
Could you elaborate as to why the Zoom F6 works better for you vs Tascam X8 especially as a one man crew? Sorry I am new to this industry but trying best to learn from others in community.
I have both the Zoom F6 and Tuscan X8. I would still use the F6 in the orca bag working solo, it just has the controls upright for me to manage easier. But for weddings I'll go with the Tascam X8 now and let me old Zoom H5 go.
Are you still suggesting this instead of the F3? Also, I need a very small recorder to put it between the two chairs the groom and the bride and the people I am going to work witjh asked me to put a very small recorder to record them. I think it's insane and the quality is not good enough, but I would like to have some tips what to buy in your opinion.
Hello, I just bought the Portacapture x8. The user manual indicates the maximum card capacity would be only 512 GB. I need more (512 BG can be too limited with 32-bit recording). Have you checked if it is possible to use 1TB or 1.5TB microSDcards (Lexar, SanDisk...) ?
@whoismatt Hi Matt, I have one more question, have you tested the equalizer? Is it possible to properly adjust the bass and treble tones if they are too high at the input? is it efficient?
I'm waiting for a one or two track 32 bit recorder (The F3 may be what I need depending on how hefty it is). I want something small, but I also need to be able to record line in. I don't really want to pay for 4 or more tracks if I don't need to.
Hi! Matt, please tell me the reason why the phantom function for 48v powered microphones cannot be activated. Power Save Mode appears on the screen. Thank you.
Great review, thx Matt. I actually just sold my mixpre 6-ii last week and have the X8 on pre-order to replace it. I was wondering if u know if there are other additional plug-in detachable mics that are compatible with the X8 besides the ones that come with the unit?
I have the mix pre 3 II.. 32bit and use it powerbank powered and 32 bit is definitely the way to go and worth the investment. I do wonder how much longer it will take Rode to come up with a wireless go 32bit transmitter cause I’m sure that may happen one day as well. Not sure if it’s possible in such a small form factor but I’m curious though 😊
Hi Matt what camera do you are using for make this video? When you are talking …: the picture is Amaizing, what camera do you use? And are you using a special lens ?
Nice vid… This was a cool commercial for Tascam Matt… at 500 bucks… this is not the budget friendly option for an early wedding filmmaker… all you need is 2x Zoom F2 recorders… one for the DJ’s sound desk and one for the bride(maybe another for groom or officiant) Total will be half the price and free lac mics and 3x recordings for backup… all being 32bit… The Tascam is so pretty that you would need tracker tags with motion sensors on it, in case it goes walkies… the F8 is also better if you also do other job types requiring a sound bag.
Good review Matt. I’ve been using the Zoom F6 for just over a year now, and I preordered the X8 a while back. I typically like to record to my talents (groom, officiant, sometimes bride, ceremony reader) to the recorder and send select mics to the camera to embed the audio into the video. My question….Does the Tascam X8 have faders like the F6 that allow you to send select lines to the camera but still record full volume to the X8? To illustrate: I have groom, officiant, and ceremony reader mic’d going to the recorder, then a line from the recorder to the camera to embed audio into video. I have the officiant’s fader turned up but groom and reader turned down, so it’s sending only the officiant audio to the camera. But if I forget to turn up the groom or reader’s mic fader on the recorder, it obviously won’t send the audio to the camera but the F6 will still record groom and reader’s mic. Does the Tascam X8 do the same?
Question: When you combine/plugin the rode wireless go ii with the tascam x8. Does the 32 bit float still working in this combo (tascam x8 / rode wireless go ii)? Sorry for the bad english.. BR Shmuel from switzerland
related to the video may I ask you create video how you import 32 bit for 24 bit audio , putting it into sequence and try to render. Even I record 9600 to 24 bit sound whenever I put into premiere there is no settings about it. and no more than 4800hz allow to do it.
Actually IF The source has already PEAKED in your DJ's soundboard you have NO CHANCE of recovering the audio even with 32 bit @1:15 ALSO if your sound guy allowed the audio to peak. You should probably get a new sound guy! Something that I am seeing a lot more people complain about is the Ultrasonic Noise when using the built in capsules. They notice it when recording at 96 and 192 khz
Hi, Can you name recorded audio file after recording using touchscreen of this recorder ? I am waiting for a handheld recorder which can offer quick recording naming during or after recording and additionally would be nice to add some tags and categories, so it's easier going trough many gigabytes of recordings on drive of computer after the import.

Amazing Review! ONE BIG QUESTION (and I'm sorry if you did say it in the video) Does the X8 allow you to power the XLR inputs? 12, 24, 48v?
Yes
@@whoismatt amazing! Thanks so much for the reply!
I'm new to recorders. Does this have a "auto" function like camera mics do or is it fully manual only?
Thank you. could you suggest a reasonably priced high-quality microphone.?
I have zero experience with audio. But i guess i understand the bit part. But what is ‘float’?
Still loving my Sony pcm d50 and d100.
You should be able to plug-in anything with a 3.5 mm audio Jack
@@whoismatt thx! any recs for a good micro SD card for the x8? Sandisk ultra? extreme? v30?
Good review - how do I turn on the speaker inside to hear what I record?
Great informative video and I love your enthusiasm. Thanks
Thanks Will!
I’m betting they will figure it out eventually :)
@@whoismatt And most of the time just after you bought there previous version 😉 So I’ll wait long enough this time!
Hi Matt what camera do you are using for make this video? When you are talking …: the picture is Amaizing, what camera do you use? And are you using a special lens ?
Sony a7siii and sony gm 24mm. Colored with my whoismatt luts
@@whoismatt thank you Matt
Hey Matt, I need make a video but I need help can I pay a video conference with you about 20 minutes for some tips that I need ?
Thank you, you are great. I just wanted to buy the F6 and you saved me money and I will get better value for money
Looks like an awesome deal. On the wishlist now! Thanks.
Nice vid… This was a cool commercial for Tascam Matt… at 500 bucks… this is not the budget friendly option for an early wedding filmmaker… all you need is 2x Zoom F2 recorders… one for the DJ’s sound desk and one for the bride(maybe another for groom or officiant) Total will be half the price and free lac mics and 3x recordings for backup… all being 32bit…
The Tascam is so pretty that you would need tracker tags with motion sensors on it, in case it goes walkies… the F8 is also better if you also do other job types requiring a sound bag.
Matt would I need an attenuator with this?
You shouldn't :) But they're cheap so I usually have one in my bag regardless juuuuust in case
@@whoismatt I also carry one everywhere I was just asking. Thanks brotha keep rockin
Didn’t get a chance to test this before sending the x8 back to Tascam, sorry about that
so what if youre running four 3.5mm lavalieres at the same time?
Hey Matt, did you see that the new Instamic Pro Plus records in 32 bit now? It's only $219, feels like a steal.
Always love getting your take on gear
32bit audio wow Good stuff and great insight review thanks!!!
Can we connected a 3.5mm TRS mic (Rode videomic NTG) directly, not sure if I understood right? thanks
One question tho how did you sync the audio with your camera video.
Hey Matt, can the tascam dual record in 32 bit float and 24 bit?
Yes you can set it to record in 24 with a 32 bit float backup
@@whoismatt Awesome! Great to know that it can do both. Appreciate the response Matt and thank you for doing all you do! 🙏🏼
So, is this basically the official replacement for the Tascam DR100 Mark III? There won't be a Mark IV, just the X8?
No clue 🤷♂️
@@whoismatt If this is what I'm going to have to replace my DR100 with, I think my next recorder will be a Zoom. :)
Looks like a handy recorder. Can't wait to get mine soon 😉👍
Nice lighting setup
EIN for zoom F3 preamp are -127dBu or less
no informations about the tascam X8
Tried it, but bit a fan. It’s got it’s used though. I’m waiting for new releases this summer.. 🤷♂️👍🏼
Awesome review, sir.
What software can i use to adjust the gain levels? can you do a tutorial on this please Matt
You should be able to adjust the levels in any video editing software
Would love you even more if you compared a typical Zoom F6 setup vs Tascam Portacapture X8 setup
👍
Explain to me again why 1/4" inputs are a factor. Do you not use 1/4" to xlr cables?
Question: When you combine/plugin the rode wireless go ii with the tascam x8.
Does the 32 bit float still working in this combo (tascam x8 / rode wireless go ii)? Sorry for the bad english..
BR Shmuel from switzerland
Great review !
Still using my H4N almost 7 yrs now .
How would this compare to the zoom f6? Similar price points I see
Make review video of Zoom F6 bigger one not F3
Yes !
So, if a strong sound exceed the limit of the microphone those 32bit they recovery? I dont think so.
related to the video may I ask you create video how you import 32 bit for 24 bit audio , putting it into sequence and try to render. Even I record 9600 to 24 bit sound whenever I put into premiere there is no settings about it. and no more than 4800hz allow to do it.
What do you use for a backup mic?
Matt, I just got my X8 today. Have you found a case for it? I don't really wanna just throw it in my camera bag. 😂
Haven’t found one yet but I’ll update my links when I do.
I've been using the Mix Pre 6II,
But this looks like its much smaller with more display...
Actually IF The source has already PEAKED in your DJ's soundboard you have NO CHANCE of recovering the audio even with 32 bit @1:15
ALSO if your sound guy allowed the audio to peak. You should probably get a new sound guy!
Something that I am seeing a lot more people complain about is the Ultrasonic Noise when using the built in capsules.
They notice it when recording at 96 and 192 khz
Hi, Can you name recorded audio file after recording using touchscreen of this recorder ?
I am waiting for a handheld recorder which can offer quick recording naming during or after recording and additionally would be nice to add some tags and categories,
so it's easier going trough many gigabytes of recordings on drive of computer after the import.
To be fair, the Zoom H series aren't great. We use the F6 and absolutely love it. We may compare it with the Tascam eventually
