      I think the touch of gaelic you heard is simply the liverpudlian accent as liverpool had a lot of Irish immigrants back in the day.

    Good god, that Brit does a better East Coast accent on the show than most Americans (who aren't really from the East Coast) can! Stephen Graham is just amazing as Capone.

    Why is it so easy for Brit actors to maintain our Yankee accents to perfection when acting?? Another shocker was Idris Elba of the Wire.. these guys deserve Oscars sure had me fooled.

      We are brought up with a lot of American films and tv shows , am sure that helps. England is full of different types of accents like this one

      If you rewatch the first 2 seasons of the Wire, Idris breaks is accent a couple times when his character is yelling. kinda funny once u pick up on it

      The African American accent is a lot harder to get right I think. Idris Elba is ok but you know he doesn’t get it perfect

    Stephen Graham is a brilliant actor. He acquired his gangster voice flawlessly for BOARDWALK as well as for his portrayal of Baby Face Nelson in the film "PUBLIC ENEMIES" starring Johnny Depp (another brilliant actor). I also enjoyed Graham in "TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY." He can do anything. 😊

    This guy is an amazing actor! In the movie Snatch as Tommy, and in Boardwalk Empire as Capon! There aren't many actors in the industry who can pull off playing Al Capon's character this good!

    It's a Scouse accent; he's from Liverpool, England.
    Regardless, Scottish accents are also classed as 'British' accents, as Scotland is in Great Britain.

      ***** I don't know a Brooklyn accent except from my friend from Brooklyn. However, I grew up in Chicago, my mom is from the South Side of Chicago, and this character sounds like my Uncle Lenny, Uncle John, and Uncle Dave.

    fuck me thats strange...I saw him on snatch so I expected him to have a cockney accent, then I saw him in boardwalk empire and that stuck...I never expected him to have a scows accent though!

    Majority of British actors who cross over do amazing US urban accents. Idris Elba in The Wire, Stephen Graham in Boardwalk Empire, Christian Bale in American Psycho etc.

    Yes it is. He played a cockney in that. He was in a play with Sean Bean called 'Accused' recently and was excellent in that too, as was Sean Bean. Who knew Al Capone was a Liverpool FC fan?

    This guy is from Liverpool, England. For Stephen to pull off a Brooklyn-Chicago accent is incredible! However, my wife is from Birkenhead (just outside Liverpool) and Brooklyn does share a similar vernacular. We both say "youse" and have some of the same pronunciation with many words. Okay, the accent is quite different, obviously. But it does have many similarities to one another.

    I have noticed some comparisons of The Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire. Stephen in his role as Al Capone is sort of like the Paulie Walnuts of the series.

    Well said. Just as there is no one standard English accent, there is no one standard Scottish accent ( Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Glasgow eg, all very different ), and Weish ( Cardiff and Swansea quite different ). I think the Americans think we all speak like Hugh Grant.
