My favorite outfit in Boardwalk Empire is one of Chalky White's three piece suits. The fabric of the jacket and pants is a dark blue or purple with a bold rust orange windowpane check. The waistcoat is solid rust orange to match the color of the check pattern in the jacket. That combination knocked me out!
I always thought that some characters looked believable but others were just way too stylised for the era. I must say, though, that the round collars that point inward on Nucky's shirts were so intriguing to me that I actually had a shirt made like that for myself. It's a really sleek design.
Boardwalk Empire is a gorgeous looking show. I love the suits as well as many of the sets (particularly the interiors) where the show was filmed. Thank you for reviewing this show!
This is by far my favorite genre of videos that you do. I love how well you explain the period accuracy. I do have to say that Boardwalk Empire was one of my favorite shows and I loved how the clothing fit each character’s personality. Well done sir!
I am a little disappointed that you found that Boardwalk Empire wasn't that accurate since I LOVED the costuming but I thoroughly enjoyed your review! I hope you do a pat 2!
Another note about Richard’s suit: Formal Military uniforms, especially Army Pinks and Greens and Marine Corps Service Alpha uniforms feature action backs, so that also harkens to Richard’s military background.
Great idea to introduce the Boardwalk Empire at t he outset. Most people in the US don't have access to it, like me, so it made this video much more approachable and very entertaining. Those button boots look nice!
Another excellent video. Raphael, you are simply the best at this with the most knowledge and in-depth information. I love your attitude about the outfits not being quite period accurate, but being okay or understanding about it. After all, it's a drama, not a documentary and you understand that building and informing the character is what costume design is all about, not striving to be the most accurate. As for the suit you wear in this video, I was fortunate enough to see it up close and personal at the second annual StyleCon a few years back. Still looks great.
I hope that if you do a part 2 to this video you cover some of the other characters styles. Especially Arnold Rothstein. A stand out character of the show with eye catching style. King of both New York and the bow tie. His blue covert coat and grey homburg hat look has always stayed with me.
I have so much fun watching your videos. I trust your analytical reviews on the films and TV series to evaluate authenticity of the costumes. Would you consider reviewing a comedy series "Jeeves and Wooster" by Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie?
The problem might not be that the experts don't now the correct attires, but that the people in charge are just not willing to pay the additional price on something that most people won't even notice.
because costume design is not about "getting things period correct" but to help tell the story through clothes. it's why someone like janie bryant is best in the business even though the rise of the trousers in mad men was too low.
@@chataclysm2112 that pretty much was going to be my comment. Too many don't understand that it's not about accuracy, but about showing who the character is through the clothing.
One of your absolute best! Please see if you can do more along this same line. Today's younger generation needs to be educated about how well men used to dress and, hopefully, one day emulate them.
I mean to be totally honest he is a practical person he was in the Army and you'll be using but I can see how lot of soldiers after the war would be more practical and less more you know ornate
Contrast: Rothstein was brought up in a comfortable middle class family and had conservative taste - quiet luxury. Thompson was brought up in a working class family and I feel he has no innate good taste- he wears what his tailor & the magazines suggest, with some personal choice in colors.
I have always wondered if the actors get to keep the bespoke clothing made for them in these kinds of shows. For instance Daniel Craig, does he have to return all those suits that are bespoke made for his body? I imagine the suits made for boardwalk empire or downtown abbey were many tens of thousands, especially considering that they had to have special fabrics made. You couldn’t really wear a boardwalk empire suit out as normal wear, but you could definitely wear 007 clothing. Then again, those celebrities have more money than they could possibly ever spend, and already spend 10-50k on multiple suits regularly.
Interesting comparisons... good point about the Jimmy character always looks like someone else dressed him (note his suits all fit like he wishes he was bigger than he is).
I own a pair of NOS oxfords from the mid 20's. They are cemented construction. It's only recent times that cemented construction was strictly a sign of cheap shoes. When you do away with the welt you can make something a lot more sleek. FYI no they don't fit me. Men's feet were a lot smaller then. By modern sizing they would probably be a US men's size 8AAAA. I got them really cheap and just wanted them.
I wear those sox holders....and the shirt holder.....the one that connects to the bottom of the shirt then circle the thigh and holds down the shirt ....the purpose of this is to hold the shirt in place ....I know when I wear suspenders with out the holders I get a bulge of my shirt by my stomach and the shirt holders SOLVED THIS PROBLEM 😆 🤣 😂
I believe that most characters wore collar bars because the collars were not starched to a proper degree of stiffness. Few of them have the unyielding quality of a period collar- you shouldn't even be able to bend a really hard starched collar enough to use a collar bar. Best available example - Herbert Hoover.
As a non native American I'd love to hear your thoughts on men's style and such from your particular heritage and its impact on classic and modern trends and hear you speaking your native language even if I couldn't understand. Thanks for bringing your vision to fruition on your channel. 🙏
I have become interested in classic only recently. Can someone please explain to me why Raphael pointed out that Jimmy wearing darker shirts is a beginner mistake? Thanks!
I'd like to get a suit inspired by boardwalk empire. Where should I shop for the suits and shirts from that era? Your shop the video section doesn't mention the suits and shirts.
Any and every time I see suspenders on snugly fit pants I know it's poor dressing from the movie staff. Men weren't so cumbersome on purpose, as a standard.
Frankly, I could not care less about your nagging about those tiny out-of-era flaws when it comes to the clothing. BE is just such a great show with so many topics and issues of the of WWI America that the pure genius of the whole makes up for any shortcomings. Besides, it´s more than an opinion of yours really, since there had surely always been variations and alterations of the trends popular back then. One should at least be aware of that.
A Part 2 would allow for the expansion of other notable characters such as Arnold Rothstein, Mickey Doyle, Nelson van Alden, Eli Thompson, etc.
Agreed, Arnold Rothstein dressed the best imo
And al Capone
Do you make that video

Now a Babylon Berlin review would be great to complete the collection !
I can't imagine Raphael, raised in Germany, NOT doing a costume review of that show.
30:01, this has to be one of the best scenes in Gentleman's Gazette history. 👌
😂
Raphael went all out cinematic with that, "What I'm wearing", segment! Like he hired a cinematographer and director just for that part. ^_^
Glad you like it

I never got around to watching Boardwalk Empire, but I will now, thank you folks are awesome
Critical videos should be educational and spreading awareness, and this is one of the best example of one.

good stuff. you guys should do an episode on 'Road to Perdition'
Martin Greenfield just passed the other week. I live less than a mile from the factory and have the distinct pleasure of owning a couple few of them.
I enjoy that I get to "cheat" in the boutonniere dept as my wife is a flower farmer so I can pick them fresh
Great video. I wish more people could manage a critical tone with this level of respect and purpose. Love it. Ps: Have you done Peaky Blinders yet? 😬

Another accurate thing about Jimmy's suspenders is that the bright contrasting color was a popular fashion statement for young gentlemen at the time
I really enjoyed watching. Maybe you can do more episodes like this one also about peaky blinders par exemple. Love your channel keep going.
Very well done and enjoyable video.
Thank you so very much. Your videos are always so informative!

Great video! I forgot how many amazing actors were on that show including my all time favourite Micheal K Williams (R.I.P)!
Excellent video 👍🏻 I was bummed when that showed canceled but I guess that is how it goes sometimes with networks
This was exactly what I was looking for. Nice job
Looking forward to the eventual Great Gatsby review!
Why don't American productions just hire Sven and Co.? It seems like they know far more about menswear than those with a degree.

Can you also do Goodfellas
Hello from France 🇫🇷, an amazing video just like all the times ! Can you make one about the suits in The crown please 🙏.
It could be a good idea ?
Jimmy’s look was my favorite style. When his character died so did the show.
Just slightly off-topic: how long does it take you to produce a video like that?
A lot of men hours because you have to rewatch the original show

I want to know how they get the bloodstains out of their saddle shoes.
Thank you very much for this informative video.
I was wondering if you could review john wick suit style. It's modern but I like it..

can you do an episode for better call saul or gus fring from breaking bad?
