Lovely video, but sorry. One major correction. Gib is a British Overseas territory. It is British, but self governing. Relying on Britain for defence and foreign policy. It is NOT a colony. It is similar in status to the Cayman Islands, Bermuda, Turks & Caicos, Falklands etc, etc. Yes the Spaniards resent it, but they have (you mentioned one in the video) two enclaves in North Africa. Those were Gibraltar Pounds! I have never seen them before, they are 100% not the standard ones we have in the UK although they have the same exact value. (side note but Scottish notes are beautiful you should look them up). It seems Gibraltar still uses paper but we now use a polymer.
I was born on the Rock but have not been back since i was a baby .....i really must go back and visit my home land before my time is up ...... such a beautiful place
Trust me it isn't just the Gibraltarians that have trouble using their pounds in England and Welsh. The English and Welsh are known for refusing Scottish and N.Irish pounds and the Scottish are known for refusing N.Irish pounds! It is Insane! It is a petty struggle between all the UK countries not just Gibraltar.
There is no such thing as N irish pounds or scottish pounds. Just like there is no such thing as Texas Dollars and New York Dollars. You must be on crack. Go to a sober house ASAP
I used to use Scottish pounds in England all the time, never had a problem. However, I should point out that some places don't refuse to accept Scottish notes due to a 'petty struggle' - it's because you have to cash them separately, which is a pain. In any case, it's different. Scottish banknotes are backed by the UK government for use within the UK - that is, they legally have the status of legal currency. Gibraltar pounds, however, do not have that status. They cannot circulate as currency within the UK, and banks won't accept them.
For anyone that thinks Gibraltar should be returned to the Spanish - you need to consider too that Spain itself has 2 similar outcrops in Morroco just across the straits. So it'd be a tad hypocritical.

this video was released a year ago so you might've heard this already (or you've already been to england), but at 7:18 you didn't pull out the notes we have over in england. those have to be local to gibraltar. after all, scotland has their own local pounds and i still have a 20p from jersey. i'm pretty sure it should be good in england tho, as all the aforementioned money, i or a family member of mine were given at an english shop as change, and it's the same currency. but yeah, you won't find that in england. the ones in england have recognizable figures on them from here, like winston churchill or the king.
The money you got was Gibraltar pounds, not British pounds, it also isn’t its own currency but rather a different design of the same currency that you can only use in Gibraltar.
Gibraltar no es una colonia porque nunca fue colonizada, sino cedida al Reino Unido en virtud de un tratado: el Tratado de Utrech. Tampoco hay colonos británicos, que ahí solo viven los gibraltareños. Saludos de España.

They don't use the "English Pound", they use the Gibraltar Pound. It has its own ISO code of GIP rather than GBP. But it has a 1 for 1 exchange rate with GBP. GBP (with the exception of notes issued in Scotland and Northern Ireland) can be spent in Gibraltar, but GIP is unlikely to be accepted in the UK. They also issue their own currency. Those £10 notes you withdrew look different from £10 notes you would get in the UK.

Hello Elliot. You may not have researched this or not had time to find out. Gibraltar is a serious point of contention politically. @@zigongosaurus5274 Yes but it's not unheard of. France is connected to the UK via a road tunnel. Macau and Hong Kong both have a Chinese city right over their border where vehicles pass through all day, everyday.
Yes, of course there are many countries that share land borders such as Kenya and Somalia or China and India. In those examples, those countries have very little to do with each other. However with Hong Kong and Shenzhen, plus Macau and Zhuhai there are thousands of cars, trucks etc crossing those borders every day. Same goes for France being connected to the UK. Gibraltar would also have no problem sourcing cars as Malta & Cyprus have no issues sourcing vehicles. There is also a huge market of used vehicles from Japan, they are banned here in Australia as cars must be built to Australian specs but Malta doesn't care they buy them.
Huummm you are touching on a very thorny issue. The British did not capture Gibraltar. In the war of succession, motivated by the lack of succession to the Spanish throne, when the monarch died without successors. Two dynasties vied for the throne; the Habsburgs, from Austria, who until then had ruled Spain, and the Bourbons, from France, who were related to the King of Spain. War broke out and Europe, as well as Spain, was divided into two camps. England supported the succession by the Habsburgs because the Bourbon King in France was already a Bourbon and was wary of one of them acceding to the Spanish throne, which would give a France-Spain alliance great power in Europe. The fact is that when an English fleet approached the vicinity of Gibraltar, the Spanish commander of the fortress, who supported the Habsburgs as well as England, ceded it to the English, on condition that when the war was over it would be returned to Spain. The fact is that when the war ended with the victory of the Bourbons, the English did not return it, so it was never captured. Currently there are several UN resolutions, for it to be returned to Spain, as it was stipulated in the Treaty of Utrecht, I leave a link if anyone is interested in deepening on the subject. In any case, the fact that historically, England has settled in Gibraltar, is as a result from a geostrategic point of view, being between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. This situation does not make much sense today if Spain were not a NATO ally, as with modern weapons the base would not last long. I leave a link in case anyone is interested in going deeper into the subject. www.realinstitutoelcano.org/analisis/gibraltar-y-el-tratado-de-utrecht/

Ceuta, and also Melilla.
But spot on. Gib is a great place!
You know that.
Would ceuta and melilla not be considered exclaves. Like the way kaliningrad is a russian exclave
@@jakeeaglen5754 I would argue that Kaliningrad is a colony. It was occupied from Germany only 80 years ago. That's not an exclave, it's a forced resettlement and a colony.

I’m English and find it a little inflammatory to call Gibraltar a colony. The brilliant Gibraltarians choose to be English/British. They have a voice and they’re not afraid to use it. They are loyal British citizens and as a Brit, proud of them.

I wouldn't call it "a little inflammatory" considering the circumstances in which Gibraltar "became British", including the local people being expelled.

What time of the year did you go? It looks cloudy and a bit rainy. Also how many days in total do you reckon you need to spend in order to see all the sights and explore the city?
This was December.. it’s almost always better weather than this. I think 2 full days so one night in a hotel is enough.. but maybe you might like it a lot and enjoy the vibe there and stay for a few more because it’s such a fascinating place. You could also stay in neighboring Spain city la Linea de la Concepcion which is cheaper and just cross the border on foot like me.

Never had my Northern Ireland Pounds refused in Scotland.

this video was released a year ago so you might've heard this already (or you've already been to england), but at 7:18 you didn't pull out the notes we have over in england. those have to be local to gibraltar. after all, scotland has their own local pounds and i still have a 20p from jersey.
i'm pretty sure it should be good in england tho, as all the aforementioned money, i or a family member of mine were given at an english shop as change, and it's the same currency. but yeah, you won't find that in england. the ones in england have recognizable figures on them from here, like winston churchill or the king.

@@anthony.3614 I didn't know that
Yes, of course there are many countries that share land borders such as Kenya and Somalia or China and India.
