  • On this episode of The Overlap, I sit down with legendary football manager Roy Hodgson, where we reflect on his incredible 47-year career in the game. From managing huge names like Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos at Inter Milan, to his short time managing Liverpool and his tenure as the head coach of the England national team, Hodgson has been at the forefront of football for decades.
In this interview, Roy shares his experiences managing some of the biggest names in football at Inter Milan, and the challenges he faced in bringing together a team of such talented individuals. He also discusses his time managing Liverpool, one of the most iconic football clubs in the world, and the pressure he felt to live up to the high expectations of the fans.
Hodgson also reflects on his time as the head coach of the England national team, where he faced both triumphs and setbacks on the international stage. He shares his insights on what it takes to manage a national team and the unique challenges that come with that role.
Finally, Hodgson shares his thoughts on the future of football and what the future holds for him past his second spell at Crystal Palace. So join me as we take a deep dive into the fascinating career of Roy Hodgson, one of the most respected and experienced managers in football.

As a West Brom fan, he is a brilliant coach. The style of football we played under Roy was the best I've ever seen at The Hawthorns. As an 8 year old at the time, that was my favourite albion team ever because we had players like Foster, Reid, Ridgewell, Olsson, Dorrans, Brunt, Gera, Morrison, Long and Odemwingie.
As a fan, I went into every single match believing we would win the game and I haven't felt that way since after he left. Even if we didn't win, you knew the players would work hard and never give in.
I always remember one game at home to Wolves where we beat them 2-0 and you had players putting their heads infront of boots, I think Olsson almost broke his leg trying to clear one off the line. Great times!

I've always felt Roy is a thoroughly decent coach, very knowledgeable man and an extremely capable manager, but he was just never right for Liverpool but very few are. I do feel Patrick Vieira was stitched up slightly by the fixtures - they were never going down realistically - but the way Roy has changed how Palace play in recent weeks says a lot, especially Eze's improvement which shows Roy still has the ability and knack to tap in to what young players need.

Roy had great success in Sweden, similar to Potter. I think its a really good step and a quite forgiving place to coach with players that follow instructions and fight. Happy for Roy and huge respect for his career.

Roy's point on silverware is spot on. Football fans nowadays are so simple, focusing on just "HoW mAnY tRoPhIeS?" when football just isn't that simplistic.

I can't believe he's still managing I stuck on Match of the day today and saw he was in charge of Crystal Palace. He's old but gold. Good for Roy Hodgson he's lived an incredible life.
