Richard, thank you for this video. I thought the intro was pretty catchy haha. The scary realities are honestly pretty eye opening. For example, I did not know that it is the 101st most expensive city in the world! It is unfortunate that wages haven't gone up either :(
Much Appreciated and thank you for watching. I do my best to have an interesting intro 😆 and yes Vancouver isn't cheap. Then combined with what you mentioned (Wages), it can make it hard to get by in Vancouver.
These are all totally valid, but my biggest frustration with Vancouver is actually that it is completely soulless. It looks good on a postcard, but it lacks charm and culture. It's not a city that was built to be lived in. It's a facade, propped up by false promises of being close to nature. Lest we forget that you'll have to cross the Sea to Sky or get a parking/camping pass within the first 8 seconds of them going live... Otherwise, you're just stuck in a rainy city with extremely limited transit options, narrow roads, and increasing homelessness /endrant
I have temporarily moved out of Vancouver (for work matter), and looking at the city in a third person view, it is much more diseased and troubled than I thought it was when I was in the city.
I find it’s very hip to sh*t on Vancouver nowadays lol. I moved away 2.5 years ago and now I’m trying desperately to move back to Vancouver. After living in the snow desert aka Calgary and also travelling around the globe quite a bit I think Vancouver is the best city in the world. Sooner or later you learn every place has issues.
Me and my Fiancè are currently living in Winnipeg, MB and we are getting married here in Winnipeg on August 2025. We are planning to move to Vancouver a month or two after the wedding. Which side of Vancouver is the best place for us to start and put some roots down? We’re looking into renting first (maybe for the first 2-3years). Currently Burnaby is #1 on our list since my Fiancè’s other office is located in Burnaby which she can easily transfer to. #2 would be Richmond or Surrey. Love your content by the way!
First off.... early congrats on getting married next year, that's awesome! Also, appreciate the feedback and thanks for watching. As for where to live in Vancouver, Burnaby is great. Port Coquitlam / Coquitlam are great to, little more space.... scenic.... Personally I like living fairly close to work, as I'm not a fan of commuting and traffic in Vancouver can be frustrating at times. Great thing about renting, you can try a few places prior to setting some real roots and get a feel for what you both like most. So don't be afraid to switch it up, until you find an area you like most!
@RichardEnsing actually it was vibrant and safe, rents were cheap, I could buy a weeks full of groceries for about $25. Work was abundant, Main and Hastings were empty in the evening (once on a Saturday night I walked there and the streets were empty except for one drunk logger who was staggering down the street, probably on leave from his camp job) my neighbours were selling their small house on 41st off of main for 40Gs, houses in Arbutus were going for 60Gs. Lots of small mom and pop Chinese Grocery stores that sold produce outside of their store. It was a down to earth fun place to explore. I remember in the hastings and main areas if we walked down one dark alley there were a couple of hidden Chinese tiny restaurants, called the green door and another called the red door. Their food was cheap and we felt safe walking there. No one lived in the alley.
Vancouver is only realistic if you have parents who bought a house in the 1990s or earlier and you are either still living at home as an adult child or can take advantage of the "Bank of Mom and Dad" to buy your first home. Also, if you are young and want to come to Vancouver, you might only want to do so if you have parents who already made most of their wealth elsewhere (usually outside Canada) and can help you get started or if they are being transferred to Vancouver by their company for a high paid executive level position and you are accompanying them as adult children. For young people without any support like this, you might want to look elsewhere!
And also, the most boring city in the world.Totally soulless, no vibe,no energy, like a good looking girl- but totally empty, without personality. Just good looking, no soul.Moved here with my husband from Europe, 5 years ago......and I tried to like it...but just can not!!!!! This city is not for my type of personality. I'm full of life, happy, love people, love life,...You can't have that here-at least not in the way I had it in Europe . Going to move to Toronto in 2025.- not perfect but it has soul. And soul is important.Plus rain, omg, just can't.And people..polite but not friendly...that's sad.Just my opinion, no offense. Cheers🎉
Yeah... I've heard that too. Life is to short not to enjoy where you live. Also, never been to Europe! So I'll have to check it out one day and compare. Hopefully Toronto is better!

Agreed..... its leads to a frustrating way of living. Not meant for long term what's so ever. Also, we all love a good rant 😆

Your not the first person to say that and wont be the last, unfortunately. Hopefully your not there for to long.

This is definitely true, as every city has problems. It's just what you are willing to live with.

I lived in Vancouver in the 70s and it was tolerable. Now i dont even want to visit it.
Yeah, I can only imagine what that would of looked like back then.

Thanks for the info! I think Red Bull wins this year.
Thank you for watching and yes, I hope your right! 😀
Who knew McLaren is going to take away the constructors championship 🏆. I can't believe Red bull is third as it stands right now.

I would say you are spot on, Life in Vancouver is pretty difficult unless you have some sort of support or make decent money.
