  • Between late summer and early autumn the seed pods of bearded irises are finally ripen and start to split open: it is very important to protect them while growing with a net, both to avoid damage by predators such as slugs and snails, but also to avoid loosing seeds when the seed pods split open releasing the seeds. After collection, place the seeds in a cool dry place and label them with the name of the variety pollinated (pod parent), and if you know it, the variety used for pollination (pollen parent), unless, as in this case, you self pollinated your iris, using the pollen of the iris to pollinate the same plant. @@sandib4234 yes let the seed pods dry on the plant , covered by a fine mesh so they are protected from slugs/snails and you won't loose the seeds when the seed pod splits open. I also made a video about how to sow iris seeds, here it is :ruclips.net/video/c1XTBkjzRos/видео.html

    what is the name of the netting you used? can I use cheesecloth? someone else suggested putting seeds in the refrigerator with germinating soil for the 4-6 weeks prior to planting....your recommendation on that would be appreciated. Also, can I place the seeds into pots instead of the ground? Im new gardener don't reallly know what I'm doing LOL

    • @plantreviewsuk1204
      @plantreviewsuk1204  3 года назад

      Hello, the net I used is just a simple net I bought from a garden centre with a mesh of about 3 mm , I never used cheesecloth but I think it should be absolutely fine as the mesh is smaller and should allow enough aeration anyway. About putting the seeds in the refrigerator for 4-6 weeks, if you live in USDA zone 9 and below, you don't need to, I never did, just plant the seeds in autumn, so the natural winter chill of temperature around 5 degrees Celsius and below for a few weeks will trigger germination in spring. I definitely recommend to put the seeds in pots rather than in soil, because the conditions are a lot easier to control in a pot than in the soil. Don't worry for being a new gardener, even experienced gardeners learn new things all the time ;)
