Plant Reviews UK
Великобритания
Добавлен 24 фев 2020
This channel will give reviews on plants cultivation (both outdoor and indoors), mainly focused on cultivation in temperate climate USDA zone 8 (as I am based in Kent, England, United Kingdom). The plants I mainly focus on are fragrant /scented plants and flowers for gardens, in particular bulbs and climbers, orchids, houseplants and rare fruit plants. I hope you will enjoy my videos and for any questions about particular plants, just write it in the comments section below the video and I will try to answer as soon as possible. If you liked my videos and would like to support my channel, it would be great if you would please subscribe. Thanks for watching and hopefully I will see you here.
Coelogyne rochussenii, a very fragrant orchid with strongly scented cascading flower inflorescences
Coelogyne rochussenii is one of the most amazingly scented orchids, that I was lucky enough to find available last year (it is not very common to find) and I am absolutely delighted to show to all my viewers. As usual, I am discussing in this video how I cultivate it and some botanical notes on this wonderful species.

DON'T THROW LEAFLESS ORCHIDS AWAY!!!

Hello all, after I purchased this Phalaeopsis bellina orchid, I kept it in good conditions for a while, but all of a sudden, its leaves started dropping one after the other, until none was left. I thought everything was lost, but as the roots looked fine, I decided to continue watering it, and see if there was any chance of recovery. After a few weeks, here in the video is what I was able to se...
Anacheilum baculus / Prosthechea baculus / Encyclia baculus / Encyclia pentotis: new scented orchid

I decided to add a new scented orchid to my collection, and found that Anacheilum baculus, also known with the synonims of Prosthechea baculus, Encyclia baculus and Encyclia pentotis, really suits me very well. Native to Central America and to the northern part of South America, I love this orchid not only for its flowers, but also for its very elegant pseudobulbs and leaves. As usual, you will...
Dendrobium tetragonum var. album. My white flowered tree spider orchid from Australia

Dendrobium tetragonum is one of the most peculiar Dendrobium species, with its square pseudobulbs and its flowers with very long sepals and upper petals, giving it such a spidery appearance, resembling some orchid species in the genera Brassavola and Brassia (however Dendrobium, Brassavola and Brassia are not very close relatives, and are quite distantly related in the orchid family). Oncidopsis Nelly Isler / Cambria Nelly Isler, a rare combination of red and fragrance in an orchid

Oncidopsis Nelly Isler, also known with the popular name of Cambria Nelly Isler, is one of the most famous and popular hybrid orchids in the Oncidium alliance, thanks to its wonderful lemon scent and its vibrant red flowers. Rlc. Liu's Joyance Golden Pin, an autumn blooming orchid and gorgeous yellow and red Cattleya hybrid

Autumn / Fall blooming orchids offer a great indoor show in a season when most gardens in cold and temperate areas have very few blooming plants, and definitely this Cattleya hybrid, Rlc. Scented houseplants: Epiphyllum pumilum, an easy care fragrant cactus...or fragrant orchid cactus!!!

Today's my Epiphyllum pumilum delighted me with a wonderful and wonderfully fragrant flower, definitely a gem in my fragrant houseplant collection!!! This species belongs to the cactus family (Cactaceae), even if this has definitely not much of the classic cactus shape (and doesn't have any spines either), as you can see in the video. Miltonidium / Oncidopsis Bartley Schwarz Beall: cultivation and reblooming of an easy scented orchid

Miltonidium / Oncidopsis Bartley Schwarz Beall is an orchid that stands out in my collection for many reasons, as I explained in the video, but also stands out in my collection because it is one of the few orchids in the Oncidium alliance that I have still surviving at home: unfortunately many Oncidiums and relatives (especially Miltoniopsis, but also Brassias on some occasions) are not the eas...

Narcissus Sorbet, a stunning split cup daffodil with a flaring corona

Narcissus Sorbet is one of my favourite daffodils for its unique look, showing a corona with flares of orange against a creamy background, a feature that, to my knowledge, is not present in any other daffodil. Tulipa ostrowskiana, a vivid scarlet red tulip species for the garden.

Tulipa ostrowskiana is one of the most variable tulip species, with colours ranging from red to yellow, and height varying from a few cm to about 20-25; even the leaves can vary in appearance, in some plants being undulate, and in others being quite straight and smooth, and the difference in leaf shape can possibly be affected by the environmental characteristics of the location where it grows....

grafted
@ Thank you! Where from did you buy this rosebush? 🥰
@@sarmishthabanerjee1057 you are welcome. I bought it from Madrona Nurseries, in Kent
This video is really informative, thank you. I met Dr. Molina in Honduras. He was the Botany professor in Zamorano University, a wonderful person. His wife, doña Tina, was his partner in life and in science, she was in charge of his botany samples which you can imagine was a huge collection by the end of their lives.
it must have been awesome to know both of them!!! Thanks for the very nice comment
Are these fragrant?
yes, I explained in the video the scent details
Hello my friends. Please help. I have this type of bulb, but it has not flowered for three years. I do not know the reason.
There can be many reasons, however a common one is that is panted in the shade: this plant loves full sun and also good fertilizing during the growth period
Can you provide me a stone apple
I can't presonally, but depending what country you live, you might find fruit shop able to sell this fruit
Most people will never remember a beautiful garden in color... BUT they will always remember the fragrance.)
very true, I have read that the olfactory sense is the one closest to the memories
@@plantreviewsuk1204 YES:) We moved to a new... albeit old home and I just bought some of these bulbs. Had them years ago and they were amazingly fragrant. They bloomed long and perfumed the whole yard... I will always remember my Mother/Fathers yard and that intoxicatingly lovely fragrance of lilac and magnolia blooms. Thank you so much for sharing your video. I could give you many more thumbs up and wish more people would plant these. Always a smile when I smell something so nice:)
@@Mochi-sn3ud thanks very much for the very nice comment, I wish you great growing in your fragrant garden
My favourite flower
the scent is really something incredible
Very useful as I have a lot already in my woody garden but I would like to manually spead them. Thank you. Very knowledgeable.
thanks very much for the very nice comment, you will love your Cyclamen woodland
Thanks for the vid :) just planted a few here as well. Absolutely huge bulbs, size of a big hyacinth, didn't even know they could get this big
I am sure you will enjoy a lot this variety. As you noticed, the bulbs of several species and varieties in the tazetta group can get very big, including this one
Funny how varieties of a specie may have slightly differences in the smell of their flower... I notice it a lot in the different varieties I have of Jasminum sambac. About tuberose, I have a single flower variety. And to me, its scent has a slightly citrusy note, along with a little bit of spicy and, of course, sweet narcotic white floral scent. A really beautiful and complex aroma
indeed, I notice it as well. I guess as there is genetic variation in flower colour and shape, there is also genetic variation in the production of flower fragrance. I wish I could grow Jasminum sambac in my garden, I love its fragrance and is a very popular plant in the tropics and in the Mediterranean climate areas, but unfortunately the UK is too cold for this species
@plantreviewsuk1204 you could try to plant sambac in pots and bring them inside during winter, close to a sunny window or you could use growing lights. I wish I could grow here in the tropics plants that need winter chill to produce flowers, like violets, lilacs, lilly of the valley and others
@@matheuscosta3099 yeah I guess all gardeners would love to get every plant they want in their garden!!! True I love several plants needing winter chill, like temperate climate Magnolias, tulips, daffodils, honeysuckles, pineapple broom, crocuses, lilies, lilacs, daphnes, cyclamens, Edgeworthia, Viburnums, Sarcococcas, hardy Gardenias. I think Sambac grows too much to accomodate it in my house, but definitely would be great if I had a conservatory or greenhouse !!! If you like tropical fragrant plants, I can definitely recommend scented Cattleyas and scented Phalaenopsis, and three absolute favourite of mine, the Cannonball Tree, the Kola plant and the Brunfelsia jamaicensis
@@plantreviewsuk1204 you right! Thank you for the recommendation on fragrant tropical plants!
@@matheuscosta3099 you are very welcome
Have you tried eating the fruits? What is their flavor & Yeild? How do they compare to Podophyllum peltatum & Podophyllum hexandrum fruits?
I never tasted any Podophyllum fruit. What is your experience?
@@plantreviewsuk1204 I've eaten ripe fruits of Podophyllum peltatum, They taste sweet & sour like tropical Fruity Passionfruit x Guava, very delicious! I'm trying to learn about what other species can offer in flavor cuz I'm domesticating Mayapples.
@@ProfesorPorcupine-yy5bt thanks very much for the information, I definitely would like to try it
@@plantreviewsuk1204 If you try it, make a video describing it's taste, flavor, ect & please send me the link. Just remember, Unripe fruits are Green & toxic, ripe fruits are perfectly edible when they change color & especially when they're fragrant. Simply tear the fruit open, suck the pulp, spit out the seeds & discard the skin. Swallowed seeds are mostly fine, as long as you don't bite or crush them, crushed seeds taste horrible indicating their poison, but they mostly pass thru just fine if you swallow them by accident. Spotty daddy in particular
@@ProfesorPorcupine-yy5bt thanks very much for the very detailed information, I will see if the Podophyllum will set any fruits
How do you describe the scent ?
it is intense, it fills the whole floor where I keep this plant
Hey I'm interested in how this has been for you the last few years. I see the video is 3 years old, i live in Scotland and am interested in doing this in my flat / possibly outside. Did this substrate mix continue to work out for you? Does it need much fertilising? What have you learnt from the process that you might do differently (if anything).
Hello, sorry for not giving an update. The Cypripediums do grow in this mix, but I think that they could grow better in a medium better to release the fertiliser for a longer period, so I am planning to change to bark and sphagnum mixed with perlite, and see how it goes
The yellow-orange one might be a hybrid of the Gloriosa Lutea.
possibly, I am not too sure
Thanks for sharing this info. My tulips seeded, and now i know how to try to grow them.
I am sure you will love your own tulips :D
Hello, I got a bare root peony from farmer gracy. Dont have much space left in the garden. I was wondering how your peonies are doing in a pot? I am planning to plant it is a large pot like you do .
Peonies do very well also in pots, but it is essential that during summer are watered very well, because I found they are very sensitive to draught. Of course, regular fertilising in spring and summer is also very important for keeping them growing.
Another excellent review, was sitting with the plant in the shopping basket, unsure if to get it or not and your video definitely helped (loved the detailed description too)
great, thanks very much for the very nice comment, I am sure that you will love it
hello, I considered this but farmergracy didnt indicate it retrun each year so changed my mind . how was your experience? did it bloom last year?
Hello, only a couple bloomed the year after, but I was not very regular in fertilising, so that also might be an issue. Usually Darwin type tulips, and species tulips, are the most reliable in blooming year after year, but regular fertilising is also strongly recommended with them to get to re-bloom as many tulips as possible
@@plantreviewsuk1204 Thank you for your reply. I give it a. lets see if I can make them rebloom

@@plantreviewsuk1204 mucho amor'!

una domanda ma la mescalina è principalmente nel fiore o anche nel corpo carnoso del cactus? Chat gpt dice che è anche nel corpo carnoso. I have bought this plant ,i do not know wether to plant it in the garden or not here in Birmingham uk .i am scared it my die ,😢
I live in Kent, that is a bit warmer than Birmingham, however my Jasminum polyanthum survived two winters with temperatures below zero degrees for a few days. I would suggest plant it in the garden during spring, after the last frost date (the last frost date depends by the area), so the plant will have time to grow and establish roots for a few months. If the winter following the planting outside is cold and the aerial parts of the plant "die", it will come back in spring from underground with new growths
