    To anyone out there listening: Spend time with the redwoods. More than a few hours, more than a few days if you can. At some point in your life. Spend time in an old growth forest the way you would spend time with friends or family and you will be forever changed.

    I'm sure the old growth trees cut in the past were made into products that improved the lives of countless people, but maybe the ones that haven't been felled should be kept. There aren't many left, and it will take centuries for the newer growth trees to get anywhere near that big.

      No one would ever see this tree before it fell down in a few years,rotten. It was already rotten. Save old growth forests.

    Yeah. Good points. The tree was an adition to the current harvest plan, thats why we dumped it on the fell-n-buck. Counldnt fall it the other direction, downhill would have crushed it more and side hill would have been into a stream. Given the condition of the tree, how rotten it was, it turned out ok.

    This tree was probably burned out and hollow 1/3 of the way up and half dead on the top. Old trees do die and it is likely better for the management of that area that it is gone. From what I've heard, old growths don't get felled often as they are more expensive to log than smaller new growths. They take longer to fall, to buck, and are extremely difficult to get out. There was a good reason to fall this tree, and it wasn't to rape the earth for profit.
    Manly video. Awesome.

    Would you take stones from the ancient pyramids or the pantheon just because "they look pretty" and you could make a lot of money selling them? I wouldn't, and I certainly hope you wouldn't. These trees should be treated the same way: as relics.

    It's interesting to note that this tree was a "vet", surrounded by 2nd growth, all it's companion trees were obviously felled some time ago. Why was it left the first time around? defective? leaning into a creek? who knows? I'm wondering if the surrounding 2nd growth is also Redwood or some white wood species......

    This angers me. Without old growth forests you will not have natural medicines like polypore mushrooms that are anti cancer, anti tumor
    And anti inflammatory agents. Without these old growth forests you would not have them and they are becoming rare as a result. Would rather they cut second growth but not old growth.

    @highcountrytimber standing dead trees provide homes for many rare species like the spotted owl. Plus as the tree rots it releases nutrients back into the soil. Old growth forests should be protected. Wood products should only be coming from plantations.

      Shut up….oh yes,that “rare” spotted owl that ness exclusively in old growth..until they were spotted nesting in 2nd growth..then some in 3growth..but these were actually labeled “surplus” spotted owls by Forest Service because spotted owls are not supposed to nest there.But you got what you wanted.

    If you respect us, then why do you call us "selfish doofusses, with archaic mindsets"? Most people think that I am a pretty cool guy. I don't want all of the old growth redwoods cut. I too, like the Idea of my kids seeing them, but they will always be there in the parks. My kids will never be able to see trees like the one in this video, because it is on PRIVATE property, in the middle of an ocean of second growth. You are, however, entitled to your opinion.

  • @TarzanThomas
    @TarzanThomas 16 лет назад

    Yes the laws are there for a reason, and the loggers in the California redwoods follow them all. They own these trees, so it is not like they are cutting trees on federal ground, also it is not like they are cutting every stick of old growth redwood. There are more old growth redwoods locked up on private ground, than there is to cut. They are locked up by owl circles, marble murrelet's, riparian areas and so on. Most of the ones that are left to cut are Residual old growth.

  • @TarzanThomas
    @TarzanThomas 16 лет назад

    So what about the "ancient trees" that had to be cut to make a place to put your house and your town? Was that justified? It is too bad the old time loggers did not know when they were opening up our country for growth and expansion, that we would have hypocrites calling the men who have carried on the legacy of logging, "ignorant". Evidently you have not looked in the mirror lately? Read up on some American history, and give loggers the respect that they deserve.

  • @TarzanThomas
    @TarzanThomas 16 лет назад

    Your grandchildren can walk through all 110,000 acres of redwood parks and see old growth redwood to their hearts content! Just leave the private landowners alone...they are the only ones who MIGHT have the OPTION of cutting THEIR OWN TREES, while following the guidelines and laws in California, which I know by experience are by far more strict than any other state in our nation. Also, I guarantee you that any man who has the privilege of cutting an old growth redwood, definitely respects it.

  • @TarzanThomas
    @TarzanThomas 16 лет назад

    The only old growth Redwood that is harvested is on private property. Any state or federal land, is locked up, (approximately 10 parks, with 131,983 acres full of old growth redwood). This is America, where people, even the wealthy, have the right to cut trees on their own property, while following state and federal laws, which, in California, are by far the most stringent I have ever seen. Some large corporations have donated tracts of old growth redwood for preservation.

  • @TarzanThomas

    "caliare"?, "Dubai"?, and you were "speaking" slowly? Hmm? You must have one of those fancy computers where you speak and it types for you? Hopefully one of these days they will get the kinks worked out of those. It's "tooo" bad that us poor old un-educated loggers still have to plunk away at the keyboard...I guess we just need to get with the 21'st century.

    Moral cowardice that keeps us from speaking our minds is as dangerous to this country as irresponsible talk. The right way is not always the popular and easy way. Standing for right when it is unpopular is a true test of moral character. Do you have the courage to do something this glorious, for all the world to see?

  • @TarzanThomas
    @TarzanThomas 16 лет назад

    So when was the last time you worked under the guidelines of a California Timber Harvest Plan (THP)? I have worked under them, and they are by far the strictest thp's I have ever seen. Maybe you should go to work for the California Department of Forestry, and apply your extensive knowledge. Everybody is ignorant, only on different subjects.

  • @TarzanThomas
    @TarzanThomas 16 лет назад

    Then quit talking and come on over and show us how it's done in tasmania. By the way, they are not scaffolds, they are "springboards", and I would like to watch you try to cut an old growth redwood; on broken up ground; without one. Why don't you post a video of a tree being fell in tasmania, that is bigger than this one.

  • @TarzanThomas
    @TarzanThomas 16 лет назад

    I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a chainsaw in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what! That is what loggers go through every day!

    The truth is, I'm mostly just upset about the closure of so many of our old growth redwood parks by Governor Schwarzenegger. These are HUGE losses to the general public, and I'm sure it won't be long thereafter that many of the old growth trees begin to disappear completely. I am particularly upset about the closure of Armstrong Woods State Park and Austin Creek Recreation areas. I have been taking my family there for over 50 years, and to think it may all be closed by July 1st is unbearable.

  • @EquuSpirit
    @EquuSpirit 16 лет назад

    Yes, but they are not the same beautiful 1400 to 1500 old growth trees that once stood in that place. Removing diseased trees or dead wood is one thing, however, indiscriminate harvesting of healthy old growth trees based upon simple board footage and bottom line profit margins in quite another. Don't people realize that this is THE ONLY PLACE in the world where these old trees grow? A tiny band along the California coastline, compared to the earth's surface. What are people thinking?

After reading some of these comments left here by all of the earth muffins, I find myself looking for answers. I grew up in Humboldt County and loggers make their agenda known:
    1. CUT THE BIGGEST.
    2. CUT IT ALL
    3. CUT IT NOW
    If loggers would simply leave the largest trees, while harvesting the smaller fire-prone trees, the forest would get healthier each year because the strongest and best get to reproduce.
    Imagine what happens when the biggest and best animals are taken out of a herd and not allowed to reproduce. You get a smaller, weaker herd.
    I am bitter because I saw many forests destroyed.

  • @ConsulOfTheAge
    @ConsulOfTheAge 13 лет назад

    Okay, I think susutainable logging is great, but replanting after cutting down old growth is like promising to rebuild the empire state building 6" per year after breaking it down for salvage. The problem with logging old growth is that unique and ancient genetics are lost, along with the VAST amount of species associated with a single old growth tree. It is much better to take a dozen mature trees as opposed to one old-growth tree.

  • @myfavoritehome
    @myfavoritehome 13 лет назад

    Actually, the bark of large trees doesn'[t burn well. (if it did, those trees would have been destroyed in forest fires centuries ago - but they didn't burn, because the bark protected them).
    SMALLER trees & deadwood on the forest floor are what burns 1st.
    Experiment: Try to start a large chunk of wood on fire....very hard to do without lots of small "tinder".
    Mature trees are least likely to burn because they are more likely to be able to reach water due to larger root system and canopy.

  • @ScarytheIrishTerry
    @ScarytheIrishTerry 13 лет назад

    What people don't realize is that there is "bad" forestry and "good" forestry. Bad forestry is logging or doing any kind of silvicultural management with no regard for the future of the forest. What has really given the forest-products industry a bad reputation is the prominence of "high grading" in many eastern forestlands. This method leaves a forest in poor shape. Also, most people don't know enough about forestry, and listen to all the negative propaganda that's fed to them from the media

  • @myfavoritehome
    @myfavoritehome 13 лет назад

    Stop all the hateful name calling and look at facts:
    The old-growth logging industry is non-existent on the East Coast of USA. Over 200 years, loggers worked themselves out of a career because big trees don't grow as fast as we cut.
    Removal of big trees & shade = higher water temps & massive silt in water, which led to extinction of Atlantic & European Salmon runs in the wild.
    Jobs/Life won't exist if we take more than the environment can provide.
    How about jobs to restore nativefish runs?

  • @constipatedkangaroo
    @constipatedkangaroo 14 лет назад

    @stumpybeaver666 Trees=Money simple as that and the bigger the tree the more money it's worth. It's simply just a greed thing i don't blame you for wanting to feed your family. However i do blame you for not being honest and admitting that this is a destructive and unsustainable practice that has to end (cutting old healthy trees, not young ones). Paper and wood products are nice but they are not crucial to sustaining society, there are many other plant products that could easily replace trees.

  • @whiskeyguy707

    @myfavoritehome I hope you are being satirical, because otherwise you have absolutely no understanding of climates or ecosystems. North American was not covered by trees such as this one, at least since the last ice age. These trees require a certain climate to grow to this size. You lived on Redwood Street with no redwoods? Well I have lived on Washington, Pine, and Maple streets, without either tree or historical President in sight.

  • @myfavoritehome
    @myfavoritehome 14 лет назад

    @whiskeyguy707
    Almost all of North America used to be covered by trees like this. Where are they now? Gone.
    I live in Sonora county by Redwood Street, but there are no redwoods on it. Where are they? Gone.
    The Cedars of Lebanon (the entire country was covered by old-growth at one time) were cut by Egypt to build temples and after enough logging you get desert.
    That's what logging will do to North America as well.

  • @whiskeyguy707
    @whiskeyguy707 14 лет назад

    @foskco87 These trees are not hard to find. I am a logger in Northern California and they are everywhere. And to everyone else, how many of you are loggers, or foresters, or hell anyone who knows what they're talking about re forest harvesting. California has some of the strictest logging regulations in the country, so if they were able to get a harvest plan that included this tree a lot of people agreed it had to go.

    As I said perviously, "for now"... "ITS A TREE FOR GODS SAKE!" Hmmmm, tree is life, therefore sacred? Choice to kill life; many a debate in dogma: pro choice pro life, you say taematoe... perhaps it will gain more rational with you if (or should i say when) the philosophy of "ITS A TREE FOR GODS SAKE!" is applied to yourself. after all, there are plenty of us, what do you matter, your only another human life form. You serve me. I eat. OK... & No that was not about anthropomorphism of tree's.

    I see, acknowledge & very much take on board your perspective, you have your beliefs & i would not ask you to remove them from your system of living. The metaphor of Noah is indeed deeply pertinant, in the eyes of the UN & corporate manifesto. However, do you at this point in time feel the 'Creator' (which i am led to believe is, the 'God' of your choice) is in control of your existence still? If so, who do you pay your taxes to & empower, whilst you live marginal?

  • @SequoiaMac

    Please, this 'your wrong i'm right scanario' is exactly what is desired by certain 3rd party members. From each persons perspective a 'truth' unfolds. It is the collective 'truths' that make the unseen, feared or ignored picture WHOLE. Eg: a couple are argueing in a car lot whether the car to buy, or not, is the right one. The manager/owner of car sales stands back & lets process take its course until one of the couple either gives up, buys or walks away or both move to another lot. cont...

  • @SequoiaMac
    @SequoiaMac 15 лет назад

    Cont. There may well be vast amounts of new tree groth being applied geographically, however, 'A tree' is not the whole picture & you know this, especially as an agent provocateur lol. Eco-systems take take 'how long exactly?' to become established & 100% symbiotic to the benefit of all living organisms on this ISLAND EARTH! In Scotland, my place of birth, forestry 'commisions' replaced trees, yes. Now nothing grows bewtween them or under. the soil & habitat is virtually dead. cont.

  • @SequoiaMac
    @SequoiaMac 15 лет назад

    Speaking of chickens, which came first; corporate 'creators' or creation? I do not refer to 'Creation' in a biblical belief system or secular religious context. Once again, the point in the 'discussion' is being 'objectively' lost (if human objectivity is at all possible. We all subjectively witness through our own construct, whether that be programmed, collectively or autonomously experienced; autonomous experience & thought processing is paramount here: if autonomous experience exists? ) cont

    How big are these new trees and how much secondary and third level life do they support? That is the key with old growth, it is part of a bigger ecosystem which supports far more biodiversity than new planted growth (unless it's done very, very well). It will take hundreds of years to get the giants back that have already been felled. Like I said, dead trees needs to come down and I understand that. I just can't see why everyone salivates over the redwood trees.

    think about this, without logging, the forests fill up with fuel, and when a fire starts, there is an endless supply of shit for it to burn, thus creating a much larger problem. i live in northern california and have seen exactly what a wild fire does. when logging and controlled burns are done corectly, we dont have these fires that burn 100,000+ acres of forest. logging is a good thing for everybody.

    I am not an environmentalist nor am I a tree hugger. I don't know if the hole in the ozone is melting the polar ice caps. Just curious, though, who needed this tree? Why are we still harvesting old growth? Do we have so many old trees that it is necessary to keep removing them? An airliner can knock over a skyscraper and we can rebuild in a few years. We can't replace these trees. Meanwhile, on the other side of this great country, we are removing mountain tops for the coal under them.

    Personally I'd like there to be a lot more old growth forest preserved(worldwide),but as long as no one is breaking the law then of course the owner of the forest is free to do as they please.The only way for people who share my preference to prevent this is by trying to change the law.That's how it works in a democracy,and a good job too!As long as the law remains the same then the world is a better place for people with your preference. People want different things.That's not a problem for me.

    But all of those forces of destruction in nature are interconnected and beneficial in one way or another. Nutrients in an old growth tree are returned to the surrounding soil and those organisms that live in it and decompose it. When logged, those organisms (hundreds of unique species) are robbed of habitat, food, and future resources.

    Have you ever seen the movie "An Inconvenient Truth"? Probably not, since they don't show that on Spike TV and ESPN, but it has been shown beyond a shadow of a doubt that destroying old growth trees and producing and using fossil fuels is causing the ice caps to melt and the planet to warm. It has warmed more in the last 100 years than we have ever recorded before this!

  • @TheTalonX
    @TheTalonX 15 лет назад

    I agree plus imagine the fossil fuels that they used to destroy this national treasure? It just makes me sick that humans are destroying the planet in such a manner. I heard someone arguing that humans are animals too and that adaptation must go both ways but that's stupid and that person was probably a racist.

    I am not an environmentalist either. Almost all of the CA redwoods have been cut down and used for lumber, why can't we just leave the rest alone? Granted, when they die they can and should be felled, especially to do it quick before they rott, but why kill a 2kyo tree for some wood? Oak is just as good.

    You guys know that you can get more paper out of an acre of hemp than an acre of trees, 4 times i'm pretty sure. sooo why are we logging forests that will NEVER grow back to the way they were... in the long run if you think about it we're going to go to hemp one way or the other. with or without the oldgrowth. imho i'drather go with.

  • @jml4000
    @jml4000 16 лет назад

    Actually I do know what I'm talkin gabout... I've studied redwoods for quite some time now. Only 4% of our nation's old growth redwoods are left. Certain species, such as the Marbled Murrelet can only be found on old growth, and the devastation set loose on these ancient forests is not worth the "finer grain" you get out of it.

  • @jml4000
    @jml4000 16 лет назад

    Not exactly..... you can't instantaneously restore the ecology of an old growth forest, particularly with redwoods. Old growth forest ecology is unique and takes hundreds of years to develop. That tree was alive hundreds of years before any of our grandparents were, and to cut it down is an offense to our national heritage.

    No, Reublicans dont think your employer should control your health care, we3 think YOU should control your health care. We dont think employers should be responsible for any of it unless they want to. The main diff between Rs and Ds is that REPs say take care of yourself, make your own decisions. DEMs say let the government collect lots of taxes and take care of everybody.

    I'm a forester in the UK and I reckon this is criminal.
    Once they've gone we'll never see the likes of these big old trees again - ever. Europe has lost 99.99% of old trees and is clinging on to the pathetic remnents.
    Sad anyone can feel like they can justify this as an occupation these days - we should all know better by now.

    There are no clear cuts allowed and that is a play on words to mean no clear cut way is right nor wrong. It is only an evolutionary response for us to be emotional about decisions like this, but it is insanity to conclude that anyone can eat without pooping or poop without eating and result in what is called life.

    Ah the final phase of the Holocene Extinction Event! Good job everybody! If we reduce the biodiversity just a bit more before the planet puts us back in our place then the next ten million years will be the brightest yet! What a amazing selective pressure humanity is! To bad I won't be around to see the amazing regrowth...

    Given the looks of the trunk he is standing on, that tree is not anywhere near death. It's just an excuse to cut down a beautiful tree so the rich can have California Redwood paneling or furniture.
    These are a national treasure and I think it is sad to watch them destroyed.

    There is no hole in the ozone kayer. Never was. It was an area whwere it was thinner than normal, and that has been building back up. The "warming" if its even occurring is hardly even measurable, and the earth has gane thru many climate changes before. Ever hear of the ice ages??? There were many.

    Just noticed something. These guys have NO skill whatsoever. The whole tree split when it hit the ground. Watch the last part of it again. Not only did they kill something that took over a THOUSAND years to grow, they splintered it. What a complete waste.

    @yellabeast You don't get it. This year I have fell redwood ranging from 12" to almost 80". Believe it or not, not a one of these trees wereover 200 years old. The company that I fall for has 40,000+ acres of timberlands. They harvest 50 million bf per year off these lands. Sounds like a lot, but they estimate that their timberlands GROW 300 million bf annuallly. Looks to me like it works out pretty good for the forest?

    I am a woodsman (real axe man) and I also trap and hunt. There is a difference between responsible forestry and this irreparable nonsense. A real man only cuts snags and young timber. He doesn't have to over compensate his manhood by destroying nature.

  • @KGero478

    Redwoods are more resilient than you think. If the tree is downed by a logger or winds the living layer will begin to grow new trunks. The tree will only die completely if you take out the roots, otherwise it will just grow back.

    @christo930 Read a book on forestry. I suggest "Positive Impact Forestry" by Thom J. McEvoy. Maybe then you'll realize that you can't even brush your teeth every morning without using a forest product.
