It's all about the guitar/amp relationship for the foundation of tone. Guthrie does a great job explaining and demonstrating that. It's amazing how many people think that you get your tone through pedals - pedals are just spices. Great job Guthrie.

Guthrie, I appreciate you, learned a lot from this, and I just subscribed. It took me many years of playing to realize that tone was in a sense the most important thing (well IMHO). If it sounds beautiful to the listener, and is melodic, I have found that's what touches their heart, and they are not gonna care that it isn't a lot of notes and super fast shredding like you hear nowadays. Of course, a Fender tube amplifier and a 335 never hurt either - a good recipe starts with good ingredients. But you are a great "musical chef" and what you deliver is super tasty. And, what you did with that simple B flat minor to A to E progression from Wicked Game at the end of the video - WOW - it was a very valuable lesson in and of itself!

Makes sense. I did a little adjusting to my Fender amp clean, as I watched. It's so easy to neglect the amp settings and focus on pedal settings. I turned up the reverb also. I had it on 2 and moved it to 4. Come to think of it I always end up adding more reverb in my recordings when I mix them, so it needed more. I like it too. Keep 'em coming Guthrie!

I think living in a time where there are soo many choices we sometimes get stuck in a rabbit hole of chasing tone. I think that hinders some and I speak from experience. I realized that buying pedals and such I will set them up to sound virtually the same. Once realized I settled on a setup and started playing. Amazing my progress once this realization came about.

Hey Guthrie! No kidding I was scrubbing the dishes after dinner last night and I thought; "Where is that Guthrie Trapp fella? I hope he's ok." Ha! So happy to see you back man. And as another viewer commented, please don't worry about us, we're here. You need to just keep taking care of business over there - we understand (And we're rooting for you) . But hey, when you do have time, we're always grateful to see these videos. I'm still working my way through your ArtistWorks program. You would be proud of my progress. Out for now! ~Joe

I thoroughly enjoyed this video Guthrie, thank you! Your approach to getting a good tone is very similar to mine - everything builds from a good clean tone! I also love your approach to the gain stages/levels. I never liked multi channel amps because it's hard to get a good, seamless sound when switching from one to the other. It feels like you're jumping from thing to another, instead of just getting more gain/compression. It's kind of hard to put into words.
