    Steely Dan is the name of the group, mainly Donald Fagan (lead vocals, keyboards) and Walter Becker (guitar) with many session players who have come in and out through the years, notably Jeff "Skunk" Baxter and Michael McDonald from the Doobie Brothers and guitarist Larry Carlton. If you haven't heard Don't Take Me Alive, there is some great guitar with from Larry Carlton in that one.

      What a track by Jeff Porcaro

    • @jtaycock
      @jtaycock 3 года назад

      Its a blend of Porcaro's drum tracks over 46 takes, and they bent the timing of the drums to their idea of precision. Basically the first live sounding drum machine.

    • @markstromberg1148
      @markstromberg1148 3 года назад

      You learn something new every day. I was not aware Porcaro plays this track. I had assumed it was Bernard Purdie, from whom Porcaro copied to create the Rosanna shuffle beat and who plays on "Babylon Sisters."

    • @michaelcaplin8969
      @michaelcaplin8969 Год назад +2

      @@jtaycock Not exactly true. This wasn't a wendel-track, and they didn't bend the timing of anything for this track. This was just a normal comped drum track from many takes. Each take was absolutely perfect off course and could have been used for the final track without us being able to hear much difference, but each take had a certain energy or charm that was important to Donald, and luckily Gary knew his tastes enough that they managed to comp together pieces from many takes to suit Donald's idea of what he wanted from the song. So this was all live, and comped just like we do today (only way more tedius than how we do it now with playlists etc). The only programmed drums where they did adjust timing for this album was Hey Nineteen, My Rival and Glamour Profession, the rest are live drums, with timing untouched :)

    Love your reactions. The Beatles and Steely Dan are my favorite bands. Steely Dan is a band for their first three albums. After touring for the 3rd album Pretzel Logic neither Walter nor Donald was satisfied with the sound produced on stage. The rest of their albums are Walter Becker (RIP) and Donald Fagen with the best studio musicians they could find. Gaucho is a sad song written by Donald Fagen to Walter Becker during the height of Walter's heroin addiction. The Gaucho is Walter's drug dealer who was always hanging around. Donald hated the guy. "Why is he standing there in your poncho and your shoes?" "No, he can't stay here" Doesn't he have a home?" "you're too messed up today we'll try again tomorrow". "I know you're a special friend, (Walter) but you don't seem to understand."

    Maybe you actually know, but simply misspoke.... Steely Dan is the band name. Not the name of a dude. Steely Dan is a actually a reference from the book Naked Lunch from William S. Burroughs. Steely Dan III from Yokohama. I'll let you check out what that actually is. Donald Fagan and Walter Becker are Steely Dan, basically. They used a number of hired guns when recording and touring.
    Gaucho is a killer track.

    First I wanted to say...... I am by no means a musician. I simply love music. You mentioned an "irregular beat" on this song. For my tastes that's one of the many attributes to a Steely Dan song. The irregular beat and what I call "change ups" where they suddenly go off into a totally different direction are two of the Steely Dan trademarks. Fagan and Becker had the ability to meld rock, jazz, R&B and fusion into a single song. Their songs sounds as good, if not better, today as the day they were released decades ago.

    All of those studio musicians read music. Difficult counts are on the sheets. That's one of the differences between jazz musicians and rock/pop musicians, virtually all jazz musicians read music and know music theory (Bix Biderbecke (1903-1931--an early member of the "27 Club"--was one notable exception).
    Steely Dan, after they're second album became Donald Fagan, Walter Becker, and any number of studio musicians. During the recording of the Aja album, on each song they routinely went through several groups of musicians to find the sound they wanted.

    An interesting article on this song and album:
    Gaucho session drummer Jeff Porcaro (who would go on to find fame and success with his band Toto) once told Modern Drummer magazine a bit about the difficult recording process:
    "From noon till six we’d play the tune over and over and over again, nailing each part. We’d go to dinner and come back and start recording. They made everybody play like their life depended on it. But they weren’t gonna keep anything anyone else played that night, no matter how tight it was. All they were going for was the drum track."

    Its so funny you talked about the rhythmic feel because they had a really hard time trying to get the drummers to get the right feel on this one and spent weeks on it. Walter Becker (one half of SD) said the change in feel during the chorus was especially tricky to nail. They are notorious for being perfectionists in the studio, to the point of madness haha

    Isn't the breaking off great? it's nice to hear your comments on varying time signatures because most just pick up the general vibe and don't have your technical knowledge or experience from actually playing. You can drop the needle on any song on Aja, Gaucho, or Donald Fagen's solo album, The Nightfly, and the music is engrossing.
    Regarding time signatures, for a future reaction (or a private listening), one of the most epic and beautifully structured pieces is a song by Kansas that no one seems to want to react to. "Carry On Wayward Sun" iand "Dust in the Wind" have been reacted to out the wazoo, but no one seems to want to touch "Song for America." A few have, but just a few. I played it for a friend who listens only to classical music and he loved it. Written by classically trained Kerry Livgren, the piece has so many sections, of course all exposed then recapitulated throughout. But I bring it up because you would find the time signature changes very interesting. Note the piano solo in the middle is in 9/8 meter. If you ever have ten minutes, I'm almost positive you'd like it, and it won't feel like ten minutes. Cheers! If you do it, I'd recommend the studio version so you can hear everything the way Livgren intended.

      @christopheryochum3602 3 года назад

      @@missbelled6700 I just think Chod would enjoy it, he being a drummer and all. I also think many radio-only listeners would like it. Everyone requests "Carry On Wayward Son" and "Dust in the Wind." Over and over. And these were prevalent on the radio. "Song for America" may have been heard on progressive-rock stations, but my feeling is most people never heard it, save Kansas aficionados who actually bought the albums. So, hopefully, Chod will get curious. Well, what do you do? Did you study or are you in a band? What do you play?
