Unfortunately, Knopfler's gig was a less-than-happy experience for both him, and for Becker and Fagen. The duo had Knopfler do repeated takes because they were not hearing what they wanted. A big source of the problem is that Becker and Fagen were accustomed to musicians who can read, and Knopfler does not.

I *love* this album now, but I admit, as a Steely Dan fan, it took years for me to warm up to some of the tracks. When "Gaucho" was released in 1980, some music critics, and some fans, said it was "too mellow," almost like elevator Muzak. However, behind a seemingly musically placid surface, there is more than a bit of foreboding and darkness, both lyrically and musically. Dan was always like that, but on this album, even more so. It's deep!

Those of us who already have 40years on this stuff really appreciate you (KNOWING how to listen) because now we experience it again like OUR first time. The Steely Dan/Donald Fagen discography showcases exactly what true songwriting/production/creative genius is all about…… In stark contrast to the non-Music, no-talent, classless tribute to vulgarity (the rap/hip-hop genre) that’s all but taken over pop-music culture worldwide.

When I was a teenager in the early 90s, I was a drummer doing some pretty low end session work. Recording drums is probably the most difficult thing to do well. So I was working on my craft trying to get good. Then I discovered this album. Bought the CD, went home and hit play. It knocked me out. Two things. I think the drumming on Babylon Sisters might be the most impressive pop drum recording I’d ever heard. Second, the guitar on Third World Man just blew my mind. At this time, guitars were mostly over-processed, played either all the way clean or with way too much gain. We had grunge but hair metal still infected everything guitar-related for better or worse. That was my real introduction into Steely Dan aside from the hits I’d heard on the radio before. Third World Man remains one of my favorite songs of theirs. I used to wonder how such a magical guitar sound could be made. Larry Carlton plugged his Gibson ES-335 straight into a late 50s Fender tweed deluxe amp with the volume on 3 or 4. That’s it! No pedals, no rack effects, just a great player with his guitar and an amp. Magic!
Btw, if you’re not ready for this to end, Donald Fagen’s solo stuff is worth checking out. The Nightfly is one of the first digital recordings ever made. Walter’s solo stuff is less radio friendly, but worth checking out too.

I just decided - tonight - that this is my favorite Steely Dan track. I remember the first time I ever heard it... on AM radio, in the car, and I pulled over cuz the groove was insane. And the DJ never announced the track. For years, I called this song "the lost Steely Dan song". I knew who it was... I knew it wasn't from Aja... but I hadn't heard Gaucho yet. And I didn't hear Gaucho in its entirely for a number of years. (Lots going on 1980-81.) When I did finally hear the song again, it was like the circle closed, what was lost was found... all that. Great reaction.

Third World Man is amazing, isn't it? That whole mournful mood, both in music and lyrics. I like how it bookends the album with the equally moody Babylon Sisters up front. I think I already said how I totally get your reaction to the album's title track - there's no denying it's one of their more oddball songs melodically and rhythmically and it took me awhile to warm up to it. Some of the Dan's quirkier songs really make more sense as deep cuts or even little musical in-jokes (Through with Buzz comes to mind) ... and I enjoy them on those terms. Cheers!

'Tonight when I chase the dragon, the water may change to cherry wine. the silver will turn to gold...Time out of mind'...leave it to Fagen to make shooting heroin sound so much more exciting and appealing than it actually is in real life. OOOh, I really dig Third World Man... I love that when you first hear the beginning, you think 'oh, this ones not funky'. When I first heard the song "Gaucho," I felt luke-warm about it. Elated by the other offerings of brilliance on that album, I dug into Gaucho a bit more. Catchy intro and main musical theme, eerie bridge/chorus, back to the somewhat bouncy-happy main theme. After dissecting the lyrics did I realize how they combined to form a masterful work of art--I then saw a connection to Glamour Profession, musically and lyrically, to storytelling elevated by the music to a kind of mystical level, hard to explain exactly. Perhaps you know what I'm getting at, Syd.

Screw ‘em if they don’t agree with your reaction. I’m sure even your most loyal followers don’t always agree. Hearing your opinion is what matters. If someone can’t take a differing view, then they should just listen too the music without a reactor.
It’s tough times we live in. If someone’s opinion disagrees with someone else, they’re immediately invalidated. Politics, music horse races; you name it.
Keep the great work up, please.

I’ve been on this Steely Dan journey with you since the beginning. It’s kind of sad to have reached the end. But there is so much great music out there. I’m glad you are starting to explore Yes. Peace.

It's not the end. Steely Dan still has 2 more phenomenal studio albums, a live album, plus 2 songs (FM and Here at the Western World), plus all the Donald Fagen and Walter Becker solo albums. We're only halfway through this journey.

Chase the Dragon - smoking heroin vapour w/ a straw as it's being heated in a candle heated tinfoil paper. 'Mystical Sphere = reference to a ball of Nepalese Opium resin. Yes, that background singer most prominent @ 3:38-42 is Michael McDonald. Guitarist Steve Khan spectacular on 'My Rival', dido w/ Larry Carlton on 'Third World Man'.

This was the first Steely Dan I ever owned. I can't remember if I bought the cassette or pocketed it but, this was my first acquisition, as it were.
I might have come home with Pretzel Logic that day. I admit nothing.
"I'll match him wind for wind." hahahahaha

You should check out "The Second Arrangement - Demo" - it was a song meant for Gaucho, but was erased by a technician.
Someone found an early tape of the song.
It shows just what could have been an even better album.
My Rival and Third World Man were replacement songs when The 2nd Arrangement was lost.

Subscribed a long time ago. What a fantastic journey watching you react to one of my favorite bands. Not everyone likes Steely Dan but you appreciate what I did about them 50 years ago. Great Channel. Love your analysis. Thank you.

Yep dude like me Gaucho is my favourite SD album, hey I like them all but for me Gaucho is the one, whole album is good. Third world man that mood it sets and the guitar solo is fantastic. Even the cover with that copy of a painting is class.

DramaSyed you should check out the "Lost Gaucho" sessions featuring incredible songs like Second Arrangement, The Bear and Kulee Baba which are actually better than most of the final record

This is a reaction channel...what do people expect! Everyone has their own likes and opinions....and we want to truly hear your opinions. With your background in music and production I think you give great in depth reactions of what you think of the music. After your reactions, if I liked a song...I usually liked it more and if I didn't like it going in, I had a greater appreciation for it.
