    The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

    She was one of the pioneering singers of what we now know as international music stars alongside Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holiday. This was 1960 to 1970's and she was still vocally brilliant and very popular. Despite having passed the 50's where female artists such as Mahalia Jackson reigned (one of those influenced by Ella) and the 60's where voices such as Etta James and Aretha Franklin reigned (who also cited Ella as an influence). That is professional longevity and not like today's music careers.

    Back in the 90's I was shopping at a large furniture store on a Friday evening. The salesman was showing me a chair and suddenly he got an odd look on his face and said,
    "Check it out." Couples were dancing in the aisles to Ella singing on their audio system. Her voice could do that.

    I keep coming back to this video. The energy. The flare. I barely knew of her music before watching these uploads. I love this performance! Her performance from years earlier on a live thing I heard on Spotify is amazing, too. Her voice stayed great up until the end. Fabulous career.

    OMG, first of all... Ella reigns supreme. Period. Now... I'm so delighted to find this live version of this charming song. For those interested: it was from a moderately successful Broadway show called "High Spirits" about a man haunted by his two late wives (...'haunted' in an amusing, "Bewitched"/ "Bell Book & Candle" kind of way). Although recorded by everyone from Johnny Mathis, Nancy Wilson and Mel Torme, to Susan Barrett, Jack Jones, and Ella... the song came along a little late to really 'stick' as a 'standard'. But it's really catchy and sounds like it'd be fun for a singer to play with. Was looking for other versions and thank heavens I ran into Ella singing it Live. WOW❗️

    Who's band was backing her? Who wrote her chart?

    • @impsrule60
      @impsrule60 10 месяцев назад

      Great question! Been wondering myself. From the show's start in 1948 until it was cancelled in 1971, the Ed Sullivan Orch was led by big band veteran Ray Bloch. The Ed Sullivan Show didn't showcase the band itself as did Tonight Show, and others. They were always behind a curtain, unseen. But they were - as showcased here - a top-notch group of veterans of the big band/jazz scene. Note that there was no lip syncing: all performances on Sullivan's show were live.
      Trumpets: Chris Griffin (lead trumpet, 1948-71), Bernie Privin, Jimmy Nottingham, and Thad Jones; Chris's son Paul Griffin was a regular substitute trumpeter
      Trombones: Roland Dupont, Morton Bullman, Frank Rehak, and Cliff Heather
      Saxophones: Toots Mondello, Hymie Schertzer, Ed Zuhlke, et al
      Piano: Hank Jones
      Drums: Specs Powell/Howard Smith
      Percussion: Milton Schlesinger, who similarly played from the first to last show. John Serry Sr often augmented the orchestra as the lead accordionist during the 1950s.
